3 Product Overview There are five China Law titles in the library: China Law Express (for news) China Law for Foreign Business Business Regulations China Law for Foreign Business Special Zones & Cities China Law for Foreign Business Taxation & Customs China Law for Foreign Business Complete (includes the 3 sections above) The China Series offers a comprehensive bilingual collection of key business news and laws and regulations of the People s Republic of China. Content selection and translation is provided by a team with extensive knowledge of China s legal system. Text is presented in English with the original Chinese easily accessed. Introduction to training This is intended for use in a training session conducted by a CCH Legal Training Consultant. It will also serve as a helpful reference tool once the training has been completed. Training typically lasts one hour. 4 Logging In Access to the China Law series is available on the CCH Internet Research NetWork allowing for convenient access without having additional user IDs and passwords. Subscriptions are on a yearly basis allowing users unlimited usage with no additional fees. To log in: 1. Type the following URL into your browser window: 2. Enter your User ID and Password* 3. 5 Library Layout 1. Click the International Business tab 2. Locate the Asia Publications section of the Library. China Law links are in Asia Publications section. You can use CCH Link Express to create a shortcut to this page Subscription Content There are 5 links to the China Law series: 1. China Law Express 2. China Laws for Foreign Business Complete (provides access to all three China Laws for Foreign Business titles.) Each link opens a new web page with the contents of your subscription. 6 China Law Express China Law Express is an electronic service that provides daily updates on developments in People s Republic of China (PRC) law. The focus of the service is primarily on commercial law. Updates are provided for the laws of the three levels of government: central, provincial, and municipal. Accessing China Law Express Click the China Law Express link. Browsing through Categories 1. At the Home page, see the listing of the 10 most recent headlines. 2. Click on a Category to retrieve the 10 most recent news headlines for that category. News updates divided into six categories. Return to Headlines for all categories. Headlines are displayed in reverse chronological order. Click to toggle to Chinese. 3. Click on a headline title to open the document. Wolters Kluwer Law & Business July,

7 Document View Toggle easily between the English and Chinese versions. You can toggle between the English and the Chinese versions. Use Ctrl+F (Find) to search within the document for a word. 8 Word Search in China Law Express You can perform a word search to find relevant headlines. The quick basic search from the home page searches through the entire database including Archive back to June, 2004, and all 6 Categories. 1. Type your search expression in the Search field. There is a 20 character limitation. 2. Click Go. 3. Scroll down to see the Search Results list displayed in chronological order. Number of headlines retrieved, page count, Next set of Refine your search using the template at the top of the list. You can also retrieve the template from the Home page before you search by leaving the search field blank and clicking Go. Enter search words - can exceed 20 characters. Select Category. Specify Date Range. 5. Click Search. 6. Click Home to return to the Home page of headlines. Wolters Kluwer Law & Business July,

9 Search in Archive Headlines Archive headlines go back to June, 2004, and are organized by category. You can retrieve Archive documents by Category and/or Date Range. 1. Click Archive to retrieve template. 2. Choose your options and click Go. Options: date range; category. 3. Log out when done reviewing China Law Express headlines. 10 Subscription Content China Laws for Foreign Business China Laws for Foreign Business consists of four titles: 1. China Laws for Foreign Business Business Regulations: A comprehensive, bilingual collection of key business law and regulations of the People's Republic of China. It is an invaluable reference when negotiating with Chinese business organizations or government departments. Presented with English and Chinese texts, it allows for easy cross-referencing between the official legislation and the translation. 2. China Laws for Foreign Business Special Zones & Cities: A compilation of laws and regulations issued by China s Special Economic Zones and major cities. This service includes local laws issued by the local people s congress and governments in the special investment areas of the People s Republic of China. It displays official Chinese text and authoritative English translation on facing pages which allow easy cross reference. 3. China Laws for Foreign Business Taxation & Customs: The publication contains a comprehensive collection of Chinese taxation and customs laws that affects foreign businesses operating in China. An ideal reference for those in negotiations with Chinese business organizations and government departments. It is presented with Chinese and English texts, making it fast and easy to refer from the translation to the official text. 4. China Laws for Foreign Business Complete provides access to all three titles. Accessing China Laws for Foreign Business 1. Click on the International Business Tab 2. Scroll down to the Asia Publications blue bar. 3. Separate links for each China Laws for Foreign Business title you subscribe to are provided. Click on the desired title link. 11 Browsing through Table of Contents Publication titles are listed on the left pane. You see your subscription title(s). 1. Click on the + for a China Laws for Foreign Business Title. Titles and topics can be expanded and collapsed using the + and symbols. 3. Click on the + for a topic. 4. Click on a document title. The document chosen appears in the main window. 13 Keyword Searching There are 4 search methods: Simple Search (Find) Advanced Search Boolean Search Filtering from search results Simple Search (Find) A simple search looks for any of the key words entered in the search expression box in any order. The search expression box always appears at the top panel of the page. 1. Type your search words in the Find box at the top of the page. 2. Click Search. Documents retrieved from all subscription titles. Search results are ranked according to frequency of occurrence and the proximity of words to each other. Running a Simple Search will retrieve results from all the subscription publications. To restrict your search to a specific publications or topic, use Advanced Search or Boolean Search. When a document is opened, the Table of Contents reflects the location of that document. Wolters Kluwer Law & Business July,

14 Advanced Search You can conduct a word search within a particular publications and select additional search criteria using the Advanced Search template. 1. Click Advanced Search. 2. Target the desired publication(s) in the left-hand column by placing a check in the applicable box(es). 3. Type search terms in the appropriate search field(s). More than one field can be used in a search. Stemming alternate word forms: run, ran, runs, running. Thesaurus synonyms: alert, active, aware, quick. 15 Boolean Searching You can conduct a word search within particular publication(s) or section(s) and use Boolean search capability. 1. Click Boolean Search 2. Target the desired publication(s) in the left-hand column by placing a check in the appropriate box(es). 3. Type your search expression using Boolean operators see Search Syntax Summary for Boolean operators. Search Syntax Summary Operator Example Results And Or Not one two one & two one and two me you me or you ^him not him Finds documents with both 'one' and 'two'. Finds documents with either 'me' or 'you'. Finds documents that don't contain 'him'. Exclusive or apples ~ oranges apples xor oranges Finds documents with either 'apples' or 'oranges', but not both. Phrase "to be or not" Finds documents with the exact phrase 'to be or not'. Single character wildcard wom?n th?? Finds documents with 'run', 'ran', 'runs', and 'running'. Synonym alert$ Finds documents with 'alert', 'active', 'aware', 'quick', etc. 4. Click Search Find Similar -- Filtering Apply a filter to search the entire database and retrieve documents with similar content. This allows you to find document based on specific document content. Filtering is available from a search results list retrieved by Simple, Advanced, and Boolean searches. Filter box. 1. Click once in filter box next to document with relevant content. The filter searches for similar documents to the ones marked. Click twice in the filter box next to document with undesired content. 2. 17 Navigating Options Number of documents = retrieved. Search results list reflects three columns: Title of document Publication (where document resides) Last Modified Date Change document excerpt view on the fly: Off, Short, Medium, Long. 18 Navigating Options continued. Split view of the document and search results list. Move to next or previous term within the document. Remove highlights on key words. Save: opens new window for File>Save as. Print: prints text only. Search for similar content within entire database of publications. Provides the reference for the current document. 19 Saving and Managing Saved Searches Saving searches allows you to reuse common search syntax without having to type in the search string or remember the required syntax. If a specific search locates the information you need, saving the search will make it easier to find the same content the next time you need to search for the information. To save a search: Type a name for the search in the Save Search as: field at the bottom of a Search Results List. You can save as many searches as you like. Your saved searches are stored as part of your user preferences for your next login session. To run a saved Search: Click the down arrow next to Choose saved search at the top of the page and select the search you want to run. It will automatically run.
