ISI Web of Knowledge Home Page Use the Log out button to clear your session seat for another researcher at our institution. To access Web of Science, either: Click the Web of Science link or Select Web of Science from the drop-down menu Page 3
Database Selection and File Depth Select search types here. You may perform a topic search from the Quick Search field. All available citation databases are selected as the default. There are three options for selecting a file depth: Click the radio button and select the latest 1, 2, or 4 weeks of data. Search one year of data by clicking the radio button and selecting the year from the pulldown menu. Select a range of years by selecting the beginning and ending years from the pulldown menus. The default is all years of available data. Page 4
Cited Reference Searching If you want to find out what articles have cited a particular work, choose Cited Reference Search from the Full Search page or click the Cited Reference Search button in the product navigation area. An example of a cited reference search for this article follows: K. Anand, J. Ziebuhr, P. Wadhwani, J.R. Mesters, R. Hilgenfeld. Coronavirus main proteinase (3CL(pro)) structure: Basis for design of anti-sars drugs. SCIENCE, 300 (5626): , Jun. 13, Click the SEARCH button to get a list of the cited papers from the index that match the criteria you specified. Use variations or truncate the name of the cited author after the first initial. You may also look up author names using the cited author index. Truncate the terms in the cited work field in order to match different forms of an abbreviated journal name or book title. Page 5
Cited Reference Search Lookup Page The table below shows all of the citations to K. Anand s papers published in the journal Science. If searching for a specific cited reference, locate it by matching its Volume, Page and Year with the original article s bibliographic information. Select the appropriate cited reference listing, as well as variants (if present), by clicking in the checkbox to the left of the reference, then click Finish Click here to view the source record for this article. You may limit your cited reference search to one or more languages and/or article types. Notice that this paper has been cited several different ways. Citation variants are often due to a paper s volume, page, and year being cited incorrectly by an author. Page 6
Cited Reference Search Results Summary As these papers cite Anand's paper, they are subject-related even though they may not use the same terminology. It is possible that you would have missed these papers in a traditional subject search due to inconsistent terminology. Click on the title to move to the full record. Page 7
Secondary Cited Author Searching Secondary cited authors are searchable when a cited article also exists as a source record in the database(s) in your subscription. For example, you can look up the references to the article by K. Anand, J. Ziebuhr, P. Wadhwani, J.R. Mesters, & R. Hilgenfeld by entering ziebuhr j* or wadwhani p* or mesters j* or hilgenfeld r* as the cited author. However, in order to retrieve all variations, you must perform a cited reference search on the first listed author. Remember, cited reference variants are only found with the first listed author. You may wish to search under the first author to look for possible incorrect citations. The ellipses (...) signify that the cited author is not the first author of the cited article. Page 8
Eliminating Self-Citations To eliminate an author s self-citations from your results, first go to Cited Reference Search to run a cited author search. Select all references that pertain to your specific author and click Finish Search to create a set. Next, go to General Search to perform an author search. Finally, go to Advanced Search and combine the two search sets with the NOT Boolean operator. (results of the cited reference search) NOT (results of the author search) After running the Cited Reference search, select all cited references for your author, then click Finish Search to create Set #1. Run a General Search on the same author to create Set #2. Set #3 contains no articles in which V.C. Baligar cited himself. Page 9
Saving Histories and Alerts You can save a search history locally to your own computer or network or to the ISI Web of Knowledge server. A locally saved history can be opened and run against updates to the data. Server Save allows you to set alerts and easily open and manage your search histories. 25 Content and Scope CC Connect provides access to complete bibliographic information of over 8,000 of the world's leading scholarly journals and more than 2,000 books. In addition, CC Connect contains a collection of over 4,400 evaluated scholarly Web sites. CC Connect is available in nine discipline-specific editions and collections. Journals, books and websites may be classified in more than one edition. Current Contents Editions/Collections Journals Books Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Science 1,074 1,304 Clinical Medicine 1,153 1,582 Engineering, Computing & Technology 1,133 1,089 Life Sciences 1, Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences 1,090 1,298 Social & Behavioral Sciences 1,643 1,296 Arts & Humanities 1, Business Collection 234 N/A Electronics & Telecommunications Collection 206 N/A Page 25
Document Types ISI indexes every significant item from the journals selected for coverage. All Files Article Bibliography Biographical Item Book Review Correction Database Review Editorial Material Hardware Review Letter Meeting Abstract News Item Reprint Review Software Review Arts & Humanities Only Art Exhibit Review Dance Performance Review Excerpt Fiction Creative Prose Film Review Music Performance Review Music Score Music Score Review Poetry Record Review Script Theater Review TV Review Radio Review Book Reviews are fully covered in the Social and Behavioral Sciences and Arts and Humanities editions. For all other editions, only those book reviews that appear in Science, Nature, and The Scientist are covered. Meeting Abstracts are not currently indexed in Current Contents Connect. However, meeting headings are covered under the Article document type. Articles are coded as reviews if they are either published in a review journal or include 100 or more cited references, along with some indicator that the article is a review, such as the word Review or Overview in the table of contents or in the article itself. Page 26
Table of Contents Record in CC Connect Organization of the journal s table of contents is reproduced, including headers and special sections. ISI s table of contents may be more complete than the source journal s because ISI creates the table of contents from the actual contents of the journal rather than simply reproducing the journal s table of contents. Click on the title to view the full record.
My Journal List & Table of Contents Alerting Two new features available for Current Contents Connect subscribers are My Journal List and Table of Contents alerting. My Journal List allows you to display journals of interest to you on the ISI Web of Knowledge portal page, from which you may access the most recent issue within CCC. Click the link below My Journal List to set up journal lists and Table of Contents alerts. There are three ways to add journals to My Journal List: Search for titles by keyword Browse by first letter of journal name Browse by subject Click Add More Journals to access the journal menu. Page 28
You may choose to display journals on the ISI Web of Knowledge homepage when you log in, and/or have Tables of Contents sent to you via when a new journal issue is available. Once you have submitted your selections, the journals will display, along with alerting information. Click Done to return to the Web of Knowledge homepage. Click Modify Settings to make changes to journal display, to turn alerting on or off, or to change alerting options. Click the hyperlinked journal title to go to the Table of Contents for the latest issue of that journal in CCC. A Table of Contents alert may be renewed by clicking on the Renew button. Page 29
