Part 2: VIEWING and EDITING EXISTING (9.3.1) FGDC METADATA in ArcGIS 10 VIEWING EXISTING VERSION METADATA Upon completion of the Part 1: INITIAL SET-UP the process to VIEW, or EDIT existing FGDC metadata can begin! TO VIEW: Open ArcCatalog 10 (if not already open) Select the Featuree Class in the Catalog Tree Click the Description Tab The Description Tab displays with the Item Description att the top. This is a simplified, standard core description that displays a Title, Thumbnail, Tags, Summary, Description, Credits, Access Restrictions, and Use Limitations. *Note: The Item Description is what gets indexed for use with the new Search functionality.
When the FGDC metadata is displayed it does NOT automatically populate the Item Description with the Citation/Tit tle, or display the Thumbnail if it already exists. The Link to the FGDC metadata appears below all the fields in the Item Description. Click on the FGDC metadataa link
Now the other links appear, permitting the existing FGDC metadata to be viewed. Use the metadata content links like an on/off toggle switch to display or hide the metadata. E.g. Click on Identification to display the metadata elements. Click on Hide to toggle off
EDITING EXISTING ( 9.3.1) FGDC METADATA in 10 If a dataa set has existing metadata created with the FGDC CSDGM standard in ArcGIS Desktop (or an earlier release) follow this alternate solution to edit the metadata using the FGDC Editor, and not usee the ArcGIS Metadata format at all. TO EDIT: Upon completion of the INITIAL SET-UP in the section directly above! the process to EDIT builds upon the steps to view FGDC metadata Open ArcCatalog 10 (if not already open) Navigate to the data set and Select the Feature Class in the Catalog Tree Click the Description Tab Scroll down and Click on the FGDC metadata link to expand it.
Now the FGDC metadata is displayed and the FGDC Metadata Editor can be opened to make the necessary edits. To OPEN the FGDC Metadata Editor, Click on the FGDC Metadataa Editor icon On the Metadata Toolbar (located wheree you docked it) The FGDC Metadata Editor is launched. Edit or add to the written content by typing into the input boxes of the FGDC Metadata Editor.
*Tip: For HELP, Click on the question mark in the upper right hand corner of the FGDC Metadata Editor, to access HELP on FGDC metadata element definitions. Then Click in any input box to open a HELP definition for any specific metadata element. Click a second time to toggle it off. When the edits are done, Click Save at the bottom of the FGDC Metadataa Editor to SAVE your changes and close the form. To display your changes, Right Click on the folder containing the datasett in the Catalog Treee Then Click on Refresh
Next time you click on your dataa set the changes to the metadata will show up in the FGDC Metadata. At this point, IF for some reason you need to EXPORT the metadataa to createe an XML file, the USGS MP Metadata Translator tool can be used in ArcToolbox.
Double Click on the tool to open the interface (GUI). ArcToolbox Conversion Tools Metadata USGSS MP Metadata Translator Navigate to the dataset by clicking on the folder icon nextt to Source Metadata: By default the Conversion Type will be XML. The Output file should result with the XML automatically created in the same location and with the same filename, but with usgsmptranslate (with exceptions due to number of character limitations) and an XML extension added. E.g. LEGAL_DESCRIPTION_ARC_usgsmp.xml or COB_POLY_usgsmptranslate.xml Click allowing the tool to run. The metadata parser mp provides errors and warnings that may be helpful for making corrections to adhere to the FGDC metadata standard. These errors display on the Results tab. This concludes the section on EDITING existing (9.3.1) FGDC metadata in ArcGIS version 10!....
*Note: If this was newly created metadata (as opposed to existing), prior to the step of opening the FGDC Metadata Editor you might choose to run the ArcToolbox Conversion Tools Metadata Synchronize Metadata tool. This can be used to capture the attribute information from the data set and populate the Entities and Attributes in the FGDC Metadata. There is no longer a refresh for updating spatial projection information or for the capturing a change in the number of features. Also see other related documents: Part 1: INITIAL SETUP for CREATING FGDC METADATA IN ArcGIS 10 Describes the required initial set up on the user end to connect to the FGDC Metadata Editor Add in tool, and the FGDC Style, for creating FGDC compliant metadata.
