User Manual 1- Introduce ScienceDirect ScienceDirect is a leading full-text scientific database offering full text articles from over 2000 peer-reviewed journals articles as well as a growing range of authoritative books, including reference works, handbooks and books which already covers around one quarter of the world s full-text scientific, technical and medical (STM) literature published in 24 fields of science provided by Elsevier. 2- Access ScienceDirect? From E-resources tab on the blue horizontal bar on the library web site, choose Online Databases List, and then scroll down till you find ScienceDirect Use this link when you are inside the BUE Use this link when you are at home, or anywhere else (log in with your BUE user name & password) In case of being On Campus or Off Campus, your search results are the same, the only difference is the way you access the database

2 ScienceDirect Home Page 2- Search ScienceDirect? 2.1 Quick Search: Here you can search for images (e.g. tables, figures, videos), specific journal/book title, specific articles by publication/volume/issue/page, exact author names or related articles by searching specific terms Quick Search is available at the top of every page that has a navigation bar. However, on the Article page, the Quick Search box is located in the upper right area of the page. Use the drop-down to the right of the box to expand it to span across the page. To find a specific volume of a specific journal title 1. Click the Articles option on Quick Search 2. Enter the journal title in the Journal/Book title field e.g. Decision support systems 3. Write the no. of the volume you d like to retrieve in the Volume search box e.g Click Search or press Enter to run the search

3 An example to search for images 1. Click the Images option on Quick Search 2. In the Images field, enter your search term e.g. material properties 3. To narrow your search, enter a Journal/Book title and/or Author name 4. Click Search or press Enter to run the search Note: The image search results only retrieves images even if you entered an author name or journal/book title Let s explain the main features in the image search result list: Move your cursor over any image to view a larger version of it Move your cursor over any description to view the full description of this image Click on any video to play it Click on View within abstract / View within Article to open the document at the page where the image appears Click on Article PDF to download the article that contains the image or video Click the check box next to each image, and then click Download multiple Article PDFs Click on Related images/ Related videos to get related items If you do not know the full title, enter a few keywords that may appear in the title. Searching All fields field will return your search terms appeared in anywhere in the article To search for an exact phrase, enclose the term in brackets { } e.g. {Engineering ethics

4 2.2 Advanced Search: The Advanced Search is available on the right side under the main navigation bar to help you search using more than one search term in different fields with the ability to limit your search according to variety options. Note: You can narrow your search based upon the publication type tabs listed above For Example : Select the Journals tab to retrieve results from journals only You can apply your search terms to different fields by selecting from the( in) field For Example : search in two fields the authors and keywords. Limit your search results to the type of sources, documents or subject & date range Searching within journals using the Advanced Search 1. Click the Journals tab. 2. Enter your 1 st search term as: structur* analysis in the Abstract, Title, Keywords field (I used the wildcard (*) to retrieve words like: structural, structure, structures ) 3. Use the operator AND to retrieve all search terms in the search results 4. Enter your 2 nd search term as: civil engineering in the Keywords field 5. Apply limiters like: searching within Subscribed journals in the subject of Engineering & retrieve only Article in the document type 6. Click Search Wildcards used in ScienceDirect Asterisk (*): to find documents containing several words with the same root. It can replace zero or more characters Example: sy*r*m finds syndrome, sympetrum, synergism & others Question mark (?): to replace exactly one character in a search word. Use one question mark for each character you want to replace. Example: me?is finds medis, metis, meris Your search queries & their results for this session displayed under Search history To restore previously saved searches click Recall search

5 Search results Total number of results 2 1 Search for more specific topics using Search within results 3 Sort results by date or relevance Use Refine results to limit or exclude your results according to content type, journal/book title, topic and year 4 1 a. Save this search will help you access your saved searches in the future with availability to modify or delete them and recall all articles or retrieve only new ones. But you should log in first to ScienceDirect using your personal account. b. Save as search alert to inform you by when a saved search retrieves recent results. It is required to name this search alert, verify the address the notifications will be sent to & choose how often you would like to be notified with this alert, then click Save Alert. You can create & edit search alerts, Topic alerts, Volume/issue alerts & Citation alerts To access for all your alerts, click on My Alerts on the green horizontal navigation bar. c. RSS Feed allows you to follow new documents that are available on ScienceDirect for the current search. 2 a. Full-text availability means that you can access the full-text of this document. b. Abstract only means that you can only view the abstract and you must purchase a license to get the fulltext.

6 3 a. You will find this icon for documents that are out of our subscription, click on the Purchase button to add these documents to your shopping cart. To add more documents at a time to the shopping cart, select the check box of each article that has a Purchase button, and click the Purchase link in the bar at the top of the results. Use our document supply service to get the full-text of the items you need. b. Select the check box next to each document you want to , then click articles link in the bar at the top of the results. Enter information for the your name& , the recipient s , the subject for the , a note & then click Send c. Export all the search results citations or select some of them by checking the box of each article, then click Export citations link in the bar at the top of the results. Choose the export format & then click Export d. Select the check box for each document you want to download, and then click Download multiple PDFs. The Download Manager opens in a new browser window e. Open all previews will open all the abstracts on each result s page Article s title Journal s title &article s volume, issue, year & page range Article s authors Show preview to view the abstract, outline, figures & references for this document PDF link to access the full-text Related articles will view closely related articles Related reference work articles will retrieve articles that are related to your search but from references

7 Scroll bar View your results in detail Choose a relevant article & click on its title in the search results page Search using the Quick search The article s toolbar Click on (+) icon to browse for each panel Outline preview Center panel The article s toolbar above has different options: 1. Click on PDF to open the full text of this article 2. Click on More options above to: this article Create an alert for new articles in this journal (signing in is required) Display images or figures in Full-size/ thumbnail (small) format The article s outline preview 1. Move your mouse over the outline, a scroll bar will appear to browse each section in the article 2. Click on the Abstract or Keywords to be highlighted in the central panel 1. Click on Bibliographic information to see: A full bibliographic record of this article Publication history when the article was available online A link to Export citation 2. Click on Citing & related articles: to see related works to this article whether they are articles or reference works articles & check if this article s been cited by others 3. Click on Applications and tools: to share your article through Facebook, Twitter or Citeulike 4. WorkSpace: Click on one of the names of the author in the center panel to display information about him / her in the Workspace panel

8 3- Browse on ScienceDirect? 2 In the left panel, browse publications titles by subject or alphabetically& filter them using publication type such as: journals or books or full-text availability & then click Apply 1 Browse ScienceDirect titles from the main page alphabetically or choose a subject to go through its titles or click on All titles Click on the green icon to show a pop up with your subscription s info The gray icon shows that you don t have a full text access to this title Hover your mouse between the title and content type of a specific publication. Click the gray arrow icon to display a popup with the following options: 3 Publication s title Publication s status: if it s available or stopped A link to Add this publication to your favourites Set an alert or RSS feed for new issues or volumes

9 Click on this publication s title from the browse page, you will find on the journal homepage the followings: 4 1. You can articles, Export citations, download multiple PDFs at once (through PDF Downloader), set-up Volume/Issue alerts as well as Article Feeds 1. View full-text results for subscribed content and abstracts for non-subscribed content 2. The volume/issue lists and the most recent issue s table of contents for quick access 4. Add this title to your Quick Links section on your ScienceDirect s home page 4- Create a Topic alert Alerts and Feeds can be set up from the search results page, journal homepage and through My Alerts (after signing in to your ScienceDirect s account) Topic alert allows you to get notifications by for the newly available content on a specific topic To create a topic alert: 1. Click on My Alerts in the main navigation toolbar 2. Click on Add/Delete topic alerts

10 3. Select your main topic from the drop-down menu, then click Go 4. Checkbox next to the topic s alert you want to receive from the available topics alerts, then click Save (A topic RSS Feed can be set up also by clicking on the RSS Feed icon next to your preferred topic) 5. Now, your topic alert s been created Expert search is designed for expert users who d like to create complicated searches in different fields using wildcards & Boolean operators

11 5- Personalisation features on home page As long as you are logged in as a registered user, you can adjust the homepage to your needs through personalised features such as: Quick Links to functions in ScienceDirect & external websites Recent Actions Favorite Journals/Books You may turn these features on or off. My settings Within My Settings in the Quick Links in ScienceDirect you can modify your personal account details, edit your preferences, modify your alerts, and change your password. Set-up your profile by clicking on Register in the top, right-hand corner of any page to get benefit from the personalized features on ScienceDirect
