1 vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices Release Ntes Build: Last dcument update: 23 May 2017 Cntents: What s New Cmpatibility and Interperability Scalability Reslved Issues Knwn Issues vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices prvides yu with a cmplete view f yur entire strage tplgy frm yur hst, thrugh yur strage netwrk, and ut t the strage array. With this slutin, yu can use vrealize Operatins Manager t mnitr and trublesht capacity and perfrmance prblems n different cmpnents f yur strage area netwrk and netwrk attached strage. What s New vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices addresses the fllwing issues: Intermittent data cllectin fr SAN iscsi bjects vrealize Operatins Manager identifies up t tw levels f IP switches by default. T cnfigure vrealize Operatins Manager t discver mre levels, perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. Open the file /usr/lib/vmwarevcps/user/plugins/inbund/managementpackfrstragedevices3/c nf/cnfig.prperties in a text editr. 2. Change the value fr IPSWITCHDATASOURCE_DISCOVER_MAX_DEPTH. IPSWITCHDATASOURCE_DISCOVER_MAX_DEPTH=-1 vrealize Operatins Manager discvers all the bjects in yur envirnment. IPSWITCHDATASOURCE_DISCOVER_MAX_DEPTH=2 The value is 2 levels f IP switches by default. If yu change the value t a higher number, vrealize Operatins Manager discvers the bjects in yur envirnment that are cnnected t mre levels f IP switches. 3. If yu change the value fr IPSWITCHDATASOURCE_DISCOVER_MAX_DEPTH, restart vrealize Operatins Manager with the cmmand: service vmware-vcps restart VMware, Inc. 1

2 "Objects are nt receiving data frm adapter instance" alert fr bjects that are n lnger present in the envirnment. Licenses are reprtedly verused due t deleted bjects. vrealize Operatins Manager nw puts deleted resurces int a "nt existing" state, allwing fr eventual deletin and reslving licensing issues. Cnfiguratin prperty t enable r disable the usage f default cmmunities fr SNMP-enabled devices T query SNMP enabled devices, the MPSD adapter uses custmized, public, r private cmmunity strings. T disable queries frm the public r private cmmunities, perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. Open the file /usr/lib/vmwarevcps/user/plugins/inbund/managementpackfrstragedevices3/c nf/cnfig.prperties in a text editr. 2. Change the value fr DISABLE_DEFAULT_COMMUNITIES. DISABLE_DEFAULT_COMMUNITIES=false The adapter tries t cnnect with any f the pssible cmmunity strings. If n custmized cmmunity string is cnfigured, the adapter tries t cnnect t SNMP-enabled devices with public and private cmmunity strings. DISABLE_DEFAULT_COMMUNITIES=true The adapter tries t cnnect t SNMP-enabled devices with custmized cmmunity strings nly. If n custmized cmmunity string is cnfigured, the adapter des nt query the SNMP-enabled devices. Restart vrealize Operatins Manager with the cmmand: service vmware-vcps restart Cmpatibility and Interperability vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices is cmpatible with the fllwing sftware and hardware versins: vrealize Operatins Manager 6.1 vrealize Operatins Manager 6.2 vrealize Operatins Manager 6.3 vrealize Operatins Manager 6.4 vrealize Operatins Manager 6.5 vsphere API fr Strage Awareness (VASA) 1.0 and later vsphere 6.0 with VirtualSAN 6.2, vsan 6.5 Cisc DCNM and Brcade BNA with CIM agent enabled Prt 5988 is used by CIM Server and Prt 5989 is used by vcenter and ESXi hsts fr CIM transactins SNMP v2 and CDP v2.0/lldp n the IP Netwrk switch CDP and LLDP advertisements/tlvs must be permitted n the netwrk switch Fr vsphere vswitch, set the CDP setting as bth mde Fr vsphere Distributed Virtual Switch (DVS), set LLDP setting as bth mde VMware, Inc. 2

3 Cisc Nexus series and Catalyst series IP Netwrk Switch Netgear M-7100 IP Netwrk Switch Arista 7050T IP Netwrk Switch Brcade FC switch with BNA 14.0 Cisc MDS switch with Cisc DCNM 6.0 Scalability The Management Pack fr Strage Devices fr vsphere cllects data n Management Pack fr Strage Devices bjects thrugh vsphere APIs, CIM server and VASA. The scale f the management pack depends n the number f bjects and metrics cllected per bject. Depending n the number f virtual machines in the envirnment and assciated strage tplgy requirements, the number f Management Pack fr Strage Devices bjects varies in each envirnment. The Management Pack fr Strage Devices fr vsphere has been tested up t a scale f 16 nde Virtual SAN cluster. Hwever, the management pack will cntinue t wrk if the cluster size exceeds beynd 16, upt Virtual SAN cluster limits. Nte: When cnnected t larger infrastructure envirnments, the cllectin times fr the strage device management pack can exceed 30 minutes. Reslved Issues The fllwing issues are reslved in the vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices release. By default, SNMP will try public and private in additin t the custmized SNMP cmmunity string in the netwrk The Management Pack fr Strage Devices queries IP switches using Cisc Discvery Prtcl (CDPv2), Simple Netwrk Management Prtcl (SNMPv2), and Link Layer Discvery Prtcl (LLDPv2) t autmatically discver netwrk tplgy. With SNMP, by default, public and private cmmunity strings are tried against all IP switches that can be discvered in the netwrk. This can result in netwrk latency. With the additin f a cnfiguratin setting t disable default cmmunity strings, this issue is reslved in this release. Inferred latency fr Derived statistics is nt calculated accurately when Management Pack fr Strage Devices is upgraded frm t When yu upgrade Management Pack fr Strage Devices frm t 6.0.3, the inferred latency fr derived statistics is nt calculated accurately and is displayed in the range f millins f millisecnds. 4 Nn-VirtualSAN Disks display Virtual SAN Statistics Disk Capacity (GB) as? Since the prperty Virtual SAN Statistics Disk Capacity (GB) is nt applicable t nn-virtualsan disks, the Analysis page shuld display the value f this prperty as either "NA" r shuld nt display the prperty. This issue is reslved in this release. CntainerView instances lead t sme memry leaks in VC Based n vsphere Management SDK, the vimprt must be lgged ut after retrieving infrmatin. Hwever, in MPSD 6.0.3, sme cnnectins related t CntainerView instances were pen fr lnger perid f time causing memry leak in VC. Knwn Issues This issue is reslved in this release. The fllwing issues are knwn t ccur in the vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices release. Knwn issues nt previusly dcumented are marked with the * symbl. VirtualSAN dashbard fr vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices displays tw hst bjects when a hst is remved frm VSAN cluster and added back* When a hst is remved frm VirtualSAN cluster and added back t the same cluster, tw hst bjects are displayed in the vrealize Operatins Management Pack fr Strage Devices VSAN dashbard. The ld hst bject appears greyed ut but is nt deleted. Wrkarund: Nne Latency metrics and Magnetic disk metrics d nt display the unit f latency* Latency perfrmance metrics and Magnetic disk metrics in the Trubleshting dashbard d nt display the unit f latency. Wrkarund: Nne. Sme widgets are nt autmatically ppulated in the Virtual SAN dashbards Sme widgets in the VirtualSAN Entity Usage, VirtualSAN Device Insights, and VirtualSAN Cluster Insights dashbards are nt autmatically ppulated when yu install the Management Pack fr Strage Devices fr the first time. Wrkarund: Click n the Edit buttn in the widget and save the cnfiguratin. Prblem alerts fr events prir t the cmpletin f the first cllectin cycle might nt display VMware, Inc. 4

5 The Management Pack fr Strage Devices might nt display prblem alerts fr events that ccurred befre the cmpletin f the first cllectin cycle f the Management Pack fr Strage Devices. Wrkarund: Nne. A CIM prvider n ESXi cannt prvide infrmatin t the Management Pack fr Strage Devices When yu run the fllwing cmmand # enum_instances IODM_SCSIadapter, yu receive the fllwing errr: errr: enuminstances Threadpl --- Failed t enqueue request. T many queued requests already: idm_grup, active 5, queued 11. The CIM prvider n ESXi cannt keep up with the number f requests frm the Management Pack fr Strage Devices. The Management Pack fr Strage Devices stps cllecting data n certain ESXi hsts. Wrkarund: Yu must increase the time interval between the cllectin cycles fr the Management Pack fr Strage Devices in vrealize Operatins Manager. T increase the time interval between cllectin cycles, perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. Lg in t the vrealize Operatins Manager user interface as the administratr. 2. In the left pane f vrealize Operatins Manager, click the Administratin tab and click Envirnment Overview. 3. In the list f tags, expand Adapter Instances and expand Strage Devices instance. 4. Select the Management Pack fr Strage Devices instance in the right pane and click Edit. 5. Increase the value in the Cllectin Interval field. Click OK. Nte: Additinal memry prvided t the ESXi CIM prvider reduces free memry that might be available t virtual machines that run n ESXi. T increase the number f requests the ESXi CIM prvider can service, perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. Open an SSH sessin t the ESXi server. 2. Open the /etc/sfch/sfcb.cfg file fr editing. 3. Change the values as needed fr the fllwing parameters: threadplsize (default 5, minimum 3, maximum 25) requestqueuesize (default 10, minimum 0, maximum 30), and intscktimeut (in secnds, default 600). 4. T restart sfcbd, run the cmmand /etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdg restart. Nte: It might take several minutes fr sfcbd t restart. Objects available in the adapter are nt seen in the dashbards When certain bjects f an bject type are nt available when yu create an adapter instance, the dashbards d nt display the bjects even after they are discvered in subsequent cllectin cycles. This ccurs because tags are nt restred in the Dashbard widget after the VMware, Inc. 5

6 discvery f new resurces. The fllwing errr ccurs when yu attempt t edit the Dashbard widget: Unable t restre frm tag picker Wrkarund: Edit the dashbard and select the tags again manually. False alerts are generated by vrealize Operatins Manager fr IP switch prts that d nt receive data in the Management Pack fr Strage Devices False alerts are displayed in the vrealize Operatins Manager Alerts page. Wrkarund: Disable the Object is Dwn alert fr the IP switch prts frm the vrealize Operatins Manager user interface. Cnfiguring a vcenter adapter instance in cnjunctin with the Management Pack fr Strage Devices adapter instance fails If yu cnfigure an instance f the Management Pack fr Strage Devices first and then cnfigure an instance f the vcenter adapter, test cnnectin f the vcenter adapter may fail. Wrkarund: Fr every vcenter Server system in the data center, cnfigure the vcenter adapter instance befre yu cnfigure an instance fr the Management Pack fr Strage Devices. Attempts t upgrade the Management Pack fr Strage Devices frm previus versins t fails Upgrade f the Management Pack fr Strage Devices t is nt supprted frm earlier versins f Management Pack fr Strage Devices. Wrkarund: Nne The Management Pack fr Strage Devices might lse cnnectivity t ESXi hsts when the ESXi hsts are cnfigured t use DHCP IP addresses The lease n DHCP addresses prvided t an ESXi server can expire. The ESXi server can subsequently receive a new IP address, but the hst name entry in ESXi might nt be updated autmatically. The management netwrk n ESXi needs t be restarted fr the IP address and the hstname t be in sync. The infrastructure f vcenter and the Management Pack fr Strage Devices des nt detect this new IP address n the ESXi server autmatically. The ESXi server may have t be recnnected t vcenter t prpagate the new IP address t the Management Pack fr Strage Devices. Wrkarund: Use static IP addresses with ESXi t avid this prblem. If yu cannt use static addresses, then restart the management netwrk n ESXi and recnnect the ESXi server t vcenter when the DHCP address n the ESXi server has changed. Certain widgets in the VirtualSAN Device Insight Dashbard and VirtualSAN Cluster Insight Dashbard d nt shw data if Slid-State Drives and Magnetic Disks are nt SMART capable VMware, Inc. 6

7 Certain widgets in the fllwing dashbards might nt shw data if SMART data is nt available r enabled n the Magnetic Disks (MDs) and Slid-State Drives(SSDs).
