Recent Operating System Class notes 04 Managing Users on Windows XP March 22, 2004 You log into a system to notify the system who you are. When you log off, any files you have opened are cleaned up, and allocated resources are released. When multiple users access a computer in Windows XP, each user has his/her own user account. These accounts help to manage resources, permissions, and valuable information. Creating a user account for each user enables each user to: Customize the way items look on the screen. See his/her own lists of Web favorites and recently visited sites Protect personal settings Use a password to keep personal files private Log on faster Quickly switch between users without having to close programs Several types of user accounts can be created: 1. Administrator: Has permission to modify the system in any way and has access to other user accounts on the system. This account offers the ability to do the following: Create and delete other user accounts on the system Change user account names, identity pictures, passwords, and account permissions Install and uninstall software. Change global settings. 2. Standard: On a system running Windows XP professional in a domain environment, users of this type can: Install and uninstall software and hardware that does not alter computer settings established by the system administrator. Create, change, or remove personally account passwords Change an identity picture 3. Limited: Reserved for inexperienced users who use the system for specific tasks. Users of this type can Create, change, or remove a personal account password Change an identity picture. 4. Guest: Folks who do not use the system on a regular basis. They do not have a password and are restricted to the same limitations as a limited account user. These accounts make it convenient for visitors to perform the following: Log in quickly Check Browse the internet Create and print documents and perform other, similar activities. 1
Setting up an account The administrator account is established when Windows XP is installed. The setup program requires that you also create at least one other account. If you are upgrading to Windows XP and already have user accounts, those accounts are migrated over to Windows XP. To create a new user account in a workgroup environment, use the following steps: 1. Open control panel, and select user accounts. 2. Click create a new account in the user account window 3. Enter a name for the user, and then click next. Try not to use spaces. 4. Select the type of account you want, and then click create account. 5. If you want to assign a password, click change an account, and then select the account name. Advanced Account setup options You can use four different interfaces to create and manage user accounts, depending on your environment and the version of Windows XP that is installed: User Accounts: If your system is not connected to a domain, this interface offers the simplest method for creating and managing a user account Domain User Accounts: If your system is connected to a domain, the user account interface resembles the one in Windows Local User and Groups Snap-In: This Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in offers more account management features. This feature is only available with Windows XP professional. Command-Line Utilities: This non-intuitive method of managing accounts offers the most direct and complete access to account tasks. It uses the net user and net local group commands. To add a user account on a domain, use the following steps: 1. Open the control panel and select user accounts 2. From the user accounts window, click create new account 3. Click add 4. In the add new user dialog, enter the user s information: User name: The name the user will use to log into his/her account Full name: The users full name Description: Use this field to describe the user. 5. Click next and then enter a password for the user. When you are done, click next. 6. Select the level of access you want to grant the user, and then click finish. There also exist an option to bypass the logon screen. Bypassing the logon screen does compromise system security and may only be a logic choice if you are the only user of the system. To enable automatic logon, use these following steps: Open the start menu and select run In the text box, type control userpassword2. Then press enter In the user tab, clear the check mark for the user must enter a user name and password to use this computer option. 2
Enter the user name and password you want to log on automatically each time the systems boots. Recovering from forgotten passwords: If you created a password-reset disk then you can still have access to your encrypted files and messages. To use the password reset disk: 1. If you are using the welcome screen and your logon fails, a link is displayed that enables you to use your password reset disk. Click this link to launch the password reset wizard. If you are not using the welcome screen, click the reset button that appears when the logon fails. 2. Insert your password-reset disk into the floppy drive. 3. Follow the wizard instructions. 4. After you have successfully reset your password, remember to create a new password reset disk for future memory lapses. 3
Configuring and Managing Network Connections You can configure three basic types of networks: Simple Peer-to-Peer Workgroup Domain 1. Simple Peer-to-Peer: This configuration is extremely easy to configure and requires little hardware. This type of network does not require a server. Each computer hosts its own database of user accounts and shared resources. 2. Workgroup: This variation of a peer-to-peer network enables resources to be shared so that each system on the network can share folders and other resources installed on one system. A single Internet connection can also be shared. For additional security, you can configure a workgroup server running Windows XP professional, which allows you to control which user have access to particular resources. 3. Domain: This type of configuration involves computers that share a single security database that is stored on one or more domain servers running either: Windows.NET server, Windows 2000 server, or Windows NT server. When you log onto a domain, your credentials are compared to those stored in the security database. A domain environment makes it easy to manage networks with more than ten systems in a network. When you run the Windows XP network wizard, it performs the following: Configures the IP address Defines the workgroup name(s) Configures the Internet connection firewall Adds the required registry keys. Default network services When you install networking hardware, Windows XP installs the following components: 1. Client for Microsoft Network: Enables you to connect to systems running any 32-bit or 64-bit windows operating system. At least one client is required on the local system to access resources on the network. 2. File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks: Required for sharing your files and printers with other system running a Windows operating system. 3. Qos Packet Scheduler: Installed on systems using Windows XP professional. It enables Quality of Service (QoS) features provided by corporate networks and Internet Service Providers (ISP). These features will be more evident and widely used once Internet Protocol version 6 (Ipv6) becomes more popular. 4. TCP/IP Internet Protocol: Provides connectivity across a variety of networks and to the Internet. In most circumstances, the default settings are acceptable without modification. Network Setup Wizard Even if your network appears to be working normally, you can run the network setup wizard to ensure that the system is set up correctly, including the permissions set on 4
shared folders, registry keys, networking protocols, and the internet connection firewall. To run the network setup wizard: 1. Open the control panel, and then click network and Internet connections. 2. Select setup a home or small office network 3. Click next to advance through the first two screens. 4. In the select a connection method screen, select one of the following options: This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computer connects on my network connect to the Internet through this computer. This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway. Other. 5. After making selection, click next 6. The option you select in step four determines which series of screens will appear. Follow the simple instructions on each screen to complete the process. 7. Run this wizard on each system in the network. The wizard becomes easier to run on the other systems in the network. 8. When you complete the wizard, it is recommended that you adjust your security settings to ensure maximum security within your network. Joining a Domain If you are running a Windows XP professional and have an account on the domain server, you can join that domain and access its available resources. To join a domain, you must have administrator privileges on the domain server. To join a domain: 1. Log on as a local administrator 2. On the desktop, right click the My Computer icon and select properties 3. Open the computer name tab 4. Check the member of domain option and then enter the name of the domain you want to join. Click OK. 5. Enter the name and password of an administrator for the domain you want to join and then click OK. 6. Follow the instructions. When the process completes, the system will reboot. Mapping Shared Folders When you map a network folder, the folder is available to you as an ordinary drive. Each time you log on, this location is mapped to the assigned drive letter, and you can access it as you would a local drive on your system. To map a shared file or folder, use the following steps: 1. Open Windows explorer, and then choose Tools Map Network Drive to open the window. 2. Select an available drive letter from the drive pull-down list. 3. Type the path and name of the folder or file you want to map, or click the browse button to locate these items. 4. If you want this connection to be available each time you log onto the network, check the reconnect at logon option. 5. Click finish. 5
