INTRODUCING BMC CONTROL-M BMC Control-M is a workload automation solution that provides a platform for developing, testing and running batch jobs and services that power businesses. BMC CONTROL-M TEST DRIVE This demonstration environment is a unique approach to testing and familiarizing yourself with BMC Control-M Workload Automation called Test Drive. This approach enables you to immediately dive into experiencing this solution and learning on your own how your organization can benefit from BMC Control-M. This document is a guide to the Test Drive that recommends a set of activities that will help you familiarize yourself with BMC Control-M. Once you have examined the suggested focus areas, you can experiment on your own and explore any other areas of interest. To get started, you can either read through this guide or watch the introductory video. SHARED ENVIRONMENT The Test Drive environment is fully operational and hosted on a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server platform. This environment is shared by multiple users from various organizations who are concurrently testing BMC Control-M. As a result, please keep the following guidelines in mind: AUTHORIZATIONS Do not store any sensitive information on this system. The information you submitted during registration such as your name, address and company name are NOT stored anywhere on this system. You are known only by the userid that was sent to you. Some functions that would normally be available to administrators are restricted here so that multiple users from different organizations can take advantage of the Test Drive simultaneously. Your username (ctmtdnnnn) determines which functions you can perform in this environment, therefore, you must observe some conventions in order to successfully accomplish various tasks. These conventions are repeated and highlighted in each section as required but in general include: Jobs in Control-M are stored in Folders. In order to be able to permanently store folders in the Control-M database, you must give your folders names that are prefixed with your user name. For example, if your user name is ctmtdu0000, folder names that you can create or read must begin with this string such as ctmtdu0000_myjobfolder. Jobs execute with the credentials and authorizations of a valid operating system (in this case Windows) user. That user is specified in the Run As field. Here too, you must specify your user name (for example ctmtdu0000). Any other value will cause the job to fail. ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC The Test Drive system is publically accessible so that you can conduct your testing wherever it is convenient for you with no access restrictions. However, in order to provide such access, the Test Drive environment has been placed outside of the BMC restricted network into a DMZ. This means this environment is outside of the security controls that protect BMC systems so please take some simple precautions to avoid exposing any of your information: Do not store any personal information on this system Do not define any jobs with parameters or characteristics that you wish to protect or that are proprietary to your organization Never give any personal or proprietary information to anyone who may present themselves as a BMC employee or administrator of this Test Drive 3

PERSONALIZED FOR YOU As part of the registration process, an environment is prepared for your use so that when you log in, there are job definitions available and some jobs will have already executed. You can manipulate these objects however you wish while you are learning and experiencing Control-M. DURATION The environment is available for your use for 30 days. At the end of that period, the username you have been provided is locked and disabled. 4

STARTING THE CONTROL-M TEST DRIVE Upon registering for the Test Drive (click here if haven t already done so), you will receive an with your personal username and password along with a link for downloading the Control-M client software. Select the link to arrive at the Download Page where you must provide your username and password (from the ) and agree to the Export Conditions and End User License in order to continue (see arrows below). If you agree, the page shown below for downloading the Control-M software is displayed. If you do not have.net 4.x or higher installed or you are not sure, download.net using the page above or from Microsoft. The next step is to download the Control-M client. Depending on which browser you use the software will either be placed in the Downloads directory or a directory of your choosing. Note: The client package is 130 MB and the download takes approximately 10 minutes. Feel free to perform other tasks during this time. Run BMC_Control-M_Workload_Automation_Client.exe. This is a self-extracting zip. Follow the prompts to place the extracted files into a directory of your choice. Continue to the next section to log in and start your Test Drive. 5

MY FIRST JOBS Here are the steps to build and run a simple flow of jobs. It should take less than 10 minutes to complete this section. You can also watch a video. 1. In the directory you created, double-click Start_BMC_ControlM_TestDrive.cmdThe Login form opens. The Login form opens. 2. Enter your username and password (from the you received). 3. Select Log In 4. Click the x to dismiss the Welcome dialog. You can return to the resources available here by clicking on the blue signpost icon in the upper right hand corner or select File->Help->Getting Started from the ribbon. 5. See the Planning Home page. 6. Open a blank workspace by clicking on the Blank Workspace icon. 6

7. Grab the OS job type in the Job Palette (highlighted) by clicking on it and drag it onto the workspace (large blank area in the middle of the display). As you drag the pointer onto the workspace, you will get an indicator that a valid job creation action is being performed. Release or drop the job once you see that indicator. 8. In the highlighted Job Synopsis, change the Job Name field from the default name (usually OS_Job#1) to MyFirstJob. 9. Change the What field from Script to Command by selecting from the drop down list. 10. Enter dir in the Command field. 11. Enter your username (similar to ctmtdunnnn) in the Run As field. 12. Select the folder object (click anywhere on the face of the folder tile except within the job) 13. Change the folder name (usually Folder#1) in the Synopsis pane to <username>_myfirstfolder so if your username is ctmtdu0001, the folder name will become ctmtdu00001_ MyFirstFolder. 7

14. You could run this now but let s create a flow of several jobs. Copy and paste this first job, one or more times, and connect the resulting jobs into a flow. See the following images. 15. Right-click on the cross-hairs ( ) in the upper right hand corner of the job and select Copy. 16. Position the cursor on the face of the folder tile, Right-click and select Paste. Repeat the paste operation a second time. 17. Change the names of the pasted jobs to MySecondJob and MyThirdJob. 18. To connect jobs into a flow, hover on the face of the job object. A triangular shape ( )appears underneath. Click on this shape and drag to the job you want to make the successor to the current job. In the example to the right, we connected MyFirstJob to MySecondJob. You can also see the triangular shape under MySecondJob as we are preparing to connect that job to MyThirdJob 8

19. Press F5 to get an aligned display similar to the image below 20. Run these jobs by clicking on the Order selection from the ribbon (see red circle above) and choosing Order Workspace. This operation will check in our work and then submit the jobs for execution. 21. Click Yes to this confirmation prompt to continue. 22. Select Order to save and submit your work. 23. Click on Done to acknowledge and dismiss this last form. 9

24. From the Navigation Pane on the left, choose the Monitoring Domain 25. Select the All Active Jobs viewpoint either from the Recent Viewpoints or All Viewpoints sections. 26. If the display is collapsed, as shown here, click on Expand All (highlighted). 27. You can now see details similar to this display. 1 0

FUNCTIONS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE TEST DRIVE BMC Control-M is a very rich solution that would take quite some time to explore fully. The following sections recommend a set of primary Control-M capabilities that are fundamental. We recommend you follow the instructions in the sections below and step through the specified tasks. Once you have completed those sections, feel free to explore any other capabilities. If you have any questions or run into problems you can post questions in the Control-M forum on BMC Communities, send us an , call or contact any BMC representative that you work with. Single Point of Control BMC Control-M enables organizations to manage all their workload automation from a single point of control. This capability is fundamental to enabling end-to-end Service Level Management, Auditing, Reporting and Compliance, reducing training, enhancing Incident and Change Management and empowering business users with self service and mobility capabilities. BMC Control-M supports a broad range of platforms, applications and technologies. Although the Test Drive contains only a small subset, you can still get a flavor of how a massively heterogeneous workload mix would behave as described here. Planning Advanced File Transfer The Planning Domain is used to create and modify job flows. We built a flow from scratch in the previous section (My First Jobs on page 6). Now we ll modify that flow by appending a File Transfer job to it. Moving files with ftp or sftp/ssh is a very common requirement within batch workload. Control-M enables you to perform this function with a dedicated job type that makes it easy to define and monitor data movement. You gain guaranteed delivery that is visible in place within the batch service ensuring that predecessor and successor events to the file transfer execute as necessary and if failures occur you immediately see the impact and can take action quickly to remediate the problem. Select the Planning Domain If MyFirstFolder is still open, click to enable editing this folder. Drag and drop a File Transfer Job into the MyFirstFolder folder. Connect the File Transfer job to the end of the flow. Select or double click the AFT job and use either the Synopsis or Job Details dialog to fill in the job parameters as follows: The Connection Profile ( ) contains information about the ftp/ssh server we are connecting to. Click on the three dots to get a list of available connections (only one in this environment) and select it. Fill Transfer ( ) to provide source and target file system locations. Up to five separate transfers can be defined. Select the source and target file and click OK. The resulting job should appear like the form on the right. File Transfer jobs have two columns for file system locations (files, patterns or directories). One is the source and one if the target depending on the action icon (between the two columns) you select. Each column enables you navigate the file system of a host. The action then determines if the transfer will occur from host A to Host B or vice versa. 1 1

In this Test Drive, only a single host is available and authorizations are fixed. You can use any portion of the D: drive as a source (browse access) but only <Incoming> as a target (write access). It s suggested your output file name should be prefixed with your user name (similar to ctmtdunnnn) (Need help? Watch video). Click on the selection arrow in the Host/Host Group field and choose phxdmz-ctmtdrv / Order the flow and switch to the Monitoring Domain to examine how it executes. The above are the basic steps for creating a job flow. You can experiment with loading existing folders or mass creating jobs using templates. The Job Palette contains all job types supported by BMC Control-M however the Test Drive environment supports only a small subset. FORECASTING Once you have built your job flow, you can forecast the workspace to verify that it will operate correctly. Select the Forecast function from the Workspace ribbon. Forecast is also a separate domain that can be used to project how jobs will execute on a future date or to assess the impact of changes to workflows or your infrastructure. The jobs can either be work in progress in a workspace or production jobs in folders. MONITORING THE BASICS Select the Monitoring domain to view your running jobs. The view should be fully expanded so you can see all the jobs and folders. If your view is different, press Expand All in the Viewpoints ribbon. Yellow jobs are executing, green are jobs that have completed successfully, red jobs have failed and gray jobs are waiting for some event; usually prerequisite jobs. You can look at the Control-M log, job output, job properties or perform actions such as rerun a completed job by selecting the job and choosing the desired action from the ribbon. Alternatively, you can right click on a job and select the desired action from the context menu. The Log and Output are also archived for long-term historical retention to simplify problem analysis and to support auditing/compliance policies. You can access this information from the context menu (right-click on a job), select More Analysis Windows->Archive Search. If a job fails, you will see a notification popup letting you know there are new alerts. You can then select the Alert Monitor from the Tools menu or click on the Alerts icon in the bottom right corner to open the Alerts view. 1 2

SERVICE LEVEL MANAGEMENT FOR WORKLOAD The BMC Control-M approach to Service Level Management is based on your definition of a Business Service. This is accomplished by using the Batch Impact Manager (BIM) job type. Simply place a BIM job at the position in the flow where the service is considered complete and provide some information (see below). BMC Control-M will do the rest automatically. All of the BIM job predecessors are collected into a Service Path and identified with a blue Service icon. As these jobs execute from day to day, Control-M collects statistical information and uses that data to compute an Estimated Completion Time. A five minute default is used until statistics are accumulated. Control-M constantly re-computes the estimated completion and compares it to the SLA or Must Complete time you specified in the BIM job. If the estimated completion becomes later, the business service is considered late and the actions you defined are performed. Building Services Go to the Planning domain and either Check Out the workspace we worked on previously, build a new flow or load a folder. Drag and drop a BIM Job onto the job workspace. Insert the BIM job into its desired location. Most commonly, this is at the end of the flow and accomplished by dragging and dropping between what was the last job in the flow and the new BIM job. Select or double click the BIM job and use either the Synopsis or Job Details dialog to fill in a Service Name, Must Complete value and select service actions available in the Test Drive environment. Run As: your username (similar to ctmtdunnnn) Service Name: enter My First Business Service Must Complete Time: enter 18:00 next to the By radio button Actions: Choose Service is late from the When selection Order the folder. See the examples below. When you click on the blue plus sign in the Actions section, the form on the right opens where you can select the action details from When list of options. (Need Help? Watch video) 1 3

Monitoring Services In addition to the monitoring facilities explored above, you have the Services Monitor at your disposal. Open it from the Tools menu or by clicking the Service Alerts icon in the bottom right corner. Fixing Services The Service Monitor shows the status of all Business Services and their SLAs. The Estimated Completion column shows when Control-M thinks your service will complete. The Deadline column shows what you requested. Slack time is how early or late the service is projected to complete. You can right-click a service to perform various functions such as snoozing the SLA to give it more time or examining any problematic jobs. If a service is running late, you can analyze and possibly correct the problem by using the Business Service Analysis Viewpoint. This activity is a sophisticated and advanced capability that requires knowledge of Control-M. You can explore the following steps: Turn on filtering for critical path Turn on highlighting of time gaps Look at Service Summary Examine Job Statistics Check for Time Gaps. If all of the job s predecessors completed but it is still waiting, this is called a time gap and should be researched. When you find a job you wish to explore, select Projection from the context menu. This will give you the job s lifecycle and show you why the job is not running. Once you determine why a job is not running, you can use What-if scenarios to develop a solution and simulate its results. 1 4

WORKLOAD CHANGE MANAGER BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager allows application developers and other non-workload experts to easily create or modify existing jobs through a simple and intuitive web-based application. Once the changes are submitted by the end users via the web based interface the operations team, using the installed Windows GUI based Control-M interface, can easily view the newly created or modified jobs and submit into the environment. To access the Workload Change Manager web based interface go to: and login using the username and password supplied to you as part of the test drive registration. Dismiss the Welcome form. Select Open existing job flows. As seen in the screen above right, navigate to the folder name you created earlier in the test drive (ctmtdu00001_myfirstfolder for example) and click in the empty checkbox to the left of your folder name, then select Open. You are asked whether you want to modify or duplicate this request, select Modify. You can now name the request, associate it to a change ID and supply an address that is used to notify interested parties when the status of the request changes. Select OK. 1 5

You can modify any of the existing jobs (by single clicking any job and then changing any of the values in the right hand side of the window) or add more jobs to the request by dragging and dropping a job from the palette. Once you have modified an existing job or added a new one, select the Submit button. Click here to watch a video that demonstrates the steps listed above regarding Workload Change Manager. Remember, Workload Change Manager is designed to be used by application developers and others who aren t experts in workload automation. Once these users create or modify workloads using the Workload Change Manager web based interface they submit that request to a member of the production control/ scheduling team. Production control/scheduling can then review the request and check-in to the environment as is, they can make changes and check-in, or they can return the request (with optional notes) to the original requestor asking them to make any needed modifications. Log back into the Control-M Windows GUI client (if you logged out earlier) and select the Planning domain icon. Then expand the Unassigned Work section, single click the new request (this is the one you just created in the WCM web interface if no new request is listed press the Refresh button in the ribbon) and then select Open. At this point you can modify any of the jobs or add new jobs to the flow. Finally, you can run and monitor these jobs by clicking on Order from the ribbon and selecting Order Workspace. The way you perform the job modification and\ monitoring would be the same as you did in the My First Job section earlier. 1 6

SELF SERVICE BMC Control-M Self Service allows application developers and other non-workload experts to easily view the status of their workload services, check progress status and obtain completion estimates against SLAs as well as other detailed information using a business vocabulary, eliminating the need to learn Control-M terminology or concepts. Control-M Self Service also allows users to request workloads (job-streams) based on their privileges without involving the operations team. BMC Control-M Self Service is available from a standard web browser and for ios and Android devices. BMC Control-M Self Service is a Microsoft Silverlight application so when you access Self Service, you may be prompted to allow Silverlight to install itself. This takes only a few seconds. To access the Self Service web based interface go to: and login using the username and password supplied to you as part of the test drive registration. Once logged in you will see some previously defined services in the Services tab. You can double click on any service which will open a new tab showing the jobs that make up that service. By highlighting any single job in a service you can then perform an action, like Hold or Rerun, with a right click or by selecting the desired option from the Actions pull-down. You can also access information about prior job runs by selecting History View. If any history exists you will see the job flow information for the prior day in a newly opened tab. You can select any other prior day by selecting the calendar icon or by simply entering a prior date into the date field. Additionally, you can also use the Order Service button to order in previously defined jobs to be submitted and run. You can also navigate to the Jobs tab and search for specific jobs in your environment as opposed to starting with services in the Services tab. Click here to watch a video that demonstrates the steps listed above regarding Self Service 1 7
