Windows NT Server Printer Driver Upgrade Instructions The steps detailed below describe the most reliable method to upgrade printer driver versions after v a on a Windows NT 4.0 Server that is shared with Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 9x clients. If you have an earlier version of the KX driver (prior to v a) you must remove the old driver using the Kyocera Mita Printer Deleter utility in the \Utility\Driver Utilities\Printer Deleter folder and reboot the Server. After rebooting the server the updated driver can be installed using either the Add Printer Wizard or the Auto Installer on the Kyocera Mita Software Library CD-ROM Important Limitations: There are two limitations to upgrading the KX driver in a Windows NT4 Server / Windows XP/2000 client network environment. These limitations are discussed in detail in the following paragraphs. 1. When upgrading printer drivers installed on Windows 2000 or XP Professional client workstations shared from a Windows NT4 server, an Insufficient Resource error may occur on Windows 2000/XP client. Please restart the PC, and then try to open the driver properties. If the issue still occurs, the Power User or Administrator has to delete the drivers with Printer Deleter.exe, and re-install the drivers again. 2. When upgrading multiple printer drivers shared to Windows 2000/XP Professional clients from a Windows NT 4 server, only one of the shared models is upgraded. Sometimes 3D image may disappear. Please restart the PC. If the 3D image still disappear after the restart, then some data files has not been upgraded correctly. Please delete the driver with Deleter.exe, and reinstall the driver again. We recommend that the User Mode KX Driver for Windows 2000 and XP Professional be installed on the NT 4 server by following the instructions in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article # (Please see the article Installing Microsoft Windows 2000 drivers on a Windows NT 4.0 server for Windows 2000 clients. ) Preparation: Shutdown all client systems. Windows 2000 Clients must be members of the same Domain as the Print Server. If they are not members of the same domain, they must follow the upgrade procedure for Windows 9x/Me to upgrade. Server Driver: 1. Restart the server. 2. Open the Printers folder by clicking Start button, selecting Settings and then clicking Printers. 3. Right Mouse click on the printer icon and select Properties.
4. Select the General tab. 5. Click the New Driver button. 6. Browse to the location of the updated driver files: [drive]:\drivers\kxdriver\winnt_2k. 7. Select the OEMSETUP.INF file then click OK. 8. If you are asked to replace Japanese files with English versions select yes in both cases. 9. When the Dialog asking you if you want to Keep the existing driver or Replace the existing driver appears on screen, select Replace the existing driver and click OK. 10. Click OK after all files have been copied. 11. In the Printers folder, the name of the printer will have Copy 2 appended on the end. 12. Right click the Printer icon and select Rename from the menu that appears on screen. 13. Delete the Copy 2 from the Printer name and press the return key. (If the original name is not restored, the printer will not be recognized by the client so when the client logs on and prints, the driver will not be upgraded.) 14. Log off the server. 15. Log back on and set up the device options under the Device Setting tab. 16. If there are alternative drivers installed select the Sharing tab and highlight the alternate OS then click OK. 17. At this point the server will ask you for the Windows 95 flat share, this means the new driver files. 18. Once the files are copied click OK. 19. Print a test page. 20. Log off the server. Windows NT 4.0 & Windows 2000 Client Printer Driver Upgrade: Note: Microsoft Windows 2000 clients must be members of the same domain as the Windows NT 4.0 Print Server to use this procedure. 1. Power on the Client. 2. Open the Printer properties by right clicking on the printer icon and selecting Properties. 3. Click the About tab. Verify that the displayed driver version is correct. 4. Click the General tab, then the Print Test Page button. 5. Click the Device Settings tab. Verify that the device settings are correct. 6. Close the Printer properties dialog by Clicking OK. 7. Open any application and print a document. Verify the document prints correctly.
Windows 9x/Me Client Printer Driver Upgrade: Note: If your Windows 2000 Client is not a member of the same domain as the NT 4.0 Print Server, follow these instructions to update the printer driver.. 1. Delete all network printers installed on the Windows 9x/Me clients using the Kyocera Mita Printer Deleter utility. 2. Restart the Windows 9x/Me client machines 3. Reconnect the network printers using either the Add Printer Wizard or by finding the printers in Network Neighborhood and Double Clicking the printer. 4. If prompted, select Replace Existing Driver 5. Open the Printer properties by right clicking on the printer icon and selecting Properties. 6. Click the About tab. Verify that the displayed driver version is correct. 7. Click the General tab, then the Print Test Page button. 8. Click the Device Settings tab. Because the Windows 9x/Me driver is not setup on the Windows NT 4.0 Server, it will be necessary to configure the printer. Select the Paper Source & Document Finishing options that are installed on the printer. 9. Close the Printer properties dialog by Clicking OK. 10. Open any application and print a document. Verify the document prints correctly.

User vs. Kernel Mode Drivers Beginning with Kyocera Mita Software Library 7.0, there are two types of Microsoft Windows printer drivers, User and Kernel mode. User mode drivers are supported for Windows 2000 and XP systems. Kernel mode drivers are supported for all operating systems. If the Windows 2000 Server contains both User and Kernel mode drivers, the Windows 2000/XP client will select a User mode driver instead of the Kernel mode driver (Note: User and Kernel mode drivers can co-exist in Windows 2000 Server) Installing User and Kernel Mode drivers on a Windows 2000 server If you are adding a User mode driver after having already installed the Kernel mode driver: 1. Click Start, point to Settings and then click Printers. 2. Highlight the printer icon, click File, and then click Server Properties. 3. Click the Drivers tab. 4. Click Add. 5. Click Next. 6. Click Have Disk. 7. In the Printer Drivers dialog that appears, click Browse and navigate to the location [drive]:\drivers\kxdriver\win2k_xp directory and select the OEMSETUP.INF file, and click 8. Click OK in the Printer Drivers dialog box. 9. Click Close in the Server Properties window.
Upgrading Kernel Mode drivers on Windows XP It is not possible to install the Kernel mode driver on Windows XP using the web installer. The reason is that the User mode driver will be installed instead. To install the Kernel mode driver on Windows XP, please follow the procedure below. Remember to reboot the Windows XP system and any systems that will be connecting to the Windows XP installed printer. 1. Click Start, point to Settings and then click Printers and Faxes. 2. Right click the printer driver and click Sharing. 3. Click the Additional Drivers button. 4. Click the Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 checkbox. 5. Click OK. 6. In the Printer Drivers dialog, click Browse and navigate to the location [drive]:\drivers\kxdriver\winnt_2k directory and select the OEMSETUP.INF file, and click 7. To upgrade the Windows 9x driver, repeat step Click the Windows 95 or 98 checkbox. 9. Click OK. 10. In the Printer Drivers dialog, click Browse and navigate to the location [drive]:\drivers\kxdriver\win9x_me directory and select the OEMSETUP.INF file, and click
