HOW IT WORKS The Web Application provides web pages from which the user can browse through the available reports. When a user chooses to run a report, a report request is logged in a central repository called the Request Log. The Request Server continually polls the Request Log for new requests. When a request is made, the Request Server launches Alchemex Smart Reporting which generates the report in Excel. The report is then downloaded to the client's workstation via the web pages. The Web Module Process Flow: 4 4
NOTE: The Web Application must run on a machine with IIS installed. The Request Server, Alchemex Smart Reporting and Excel must all run together on a single machine. This can be a different machine to the web server where the Web Application is running. The Request Log and the Alchemex Smart Reporting Server Folder can be installed on any accessible network location. The Web Module Hardware Infrastructure: 5 5
USERS GUIDE System Requirements The installation of The Web Module requires the installation of two sets of components; the Request Server component and the Web Application component. The Web Application component must be installed on the web server. The Request Server component can be installed on one or more workstations that have access to the same The Web Module Server Folder as the web server. Before installing The Web Module: Check your intended Request Servers and Web Server meet the minimum hardware and software requirements. Ensure that you configure The Web Module correctly on the intended Request Server workstations before installing The Web Module Request Server. Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements: 1. Operating System : Windows Server 2003 / 2008, Windows Vista 2. Processor: Pentium III 3. Memory: 128MB RAM 4. Hard Drive Space: 2GB Prerequisites: Alchemex Smart Reporting.NET Framework 3.5 (SP1 supported) Internet Information Services (version 6 and upwards) Microsoft Excel 2003 /
Windows Server Bit SQL Server / SQL Express 7 7

4. Click Next. 9 9
5. Choose your destination folder. You may modify the default destination folder, but it is recommended that you use the existing location. Click Next. 6. If Custom is selected, and you click Next, the following screen will appear : 10 10
Request Server: This module is responsible for executing the report requests coming from the Web Reporting module. Web Site: This module is the actual Web Reporting user interface that runs under IIS on the server and within the browser for the client. Please Note: These modules are provided separately as it is possible to install them on different machines. In particular when Excel will not be installed on the Web Server then the Request Server will be installed on a Server running Excel and Alchemex The Web Site component must be installed on a server running IIS version 6 or higher. 7. When the Installation has completed. The following screen will appear confirming successful installation
8. Click Finish. The The Web Module Configuration application will automatically launch (can take a minute)
Web Configuration Application General Tab 1. Click Set Metadata Path to set the metadata path for all the listed Alchemex Smart Reporting modules. 2. Un-checking Update All will allow setting per module. Please Note: All of the modules must point at the same Metadata location (path to alchemex.svd) for the application to function correctly
IIS (Web) Tab 1. Click Create to automatically create the Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Reporting site
2. From this dialog you can: Start and Stop the web site Set Anonymous User Credentials used to access the site These are the credentials that the Web Server will use to access the files and the folders needed for its execution. The user account provided should have sufficient read and write access to the appropriate file system. (Hint: Use the Test Page to ensure that the correct permissions have been granted) Set ASP.NET version used by the site Applies ONLY to IIS6. Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Reporting requires.net framework 3.5 to run successfully. This option sets the ASP.NET version of the Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Reporting Site to use the correct.net framework version. (Hint: Internet Information Services [IIS] will be set to version this is correct) Launch Test page 15 15
Launch Web Reporting Please Note: All these settings can be modified through Internet Information Services found in Control Panel > Administrative Tools
Request Service Tab From this dialog you can: Start and Stop the Request service Set the Service Logon Credentials These are the credentials that the Request Service will use to access the files and the folders needed for its execution. The user account provided should have sufficient read and write access to the local file system. Using the Local System Account. The Local System account does not require a password, does not have network access rights in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, and as such the Alchemex Smart Reporting The Web Module Request Server will be unable to access the Alchemex Smart Reporting Server Folder and Output Folder if they reside on the network. By default Alchemex Smart Reporting The Web Module Request Server is installed to run under the Local System account, but in general this should be changed to run under a Domain User account after installation
Using the Domain User Account A Domain User account uses Windows Authentication, that is, the same user name and password used to connect to the operating system is also used to run the service. A Domain User account is typically used because it gives access to the network. Requirements for the Domain User Account The Domain User account must have the following permissions: Rights to logon as a service. Read/write access to the Alchemex Smart Reporting Server Folder e.g. \\MyServer1\Data\Alchemex\Server. Read access to the Output Folder where the resulting temporary Excel reports generated by Alchemex Smart Reporting will be saved. By default, during installation, the Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Report Output folder is created in the Alchemex Smart Reporting Server Folder i.e. \\MyServer1\Data\Alchemex\Server\Alchemex Web Report Output\. However, you can create a folder anywhere on the network and change the OutputPath key in the Alchemex Smart Reporting The Web Module Request Server INI file (\Alchemex\Alchemex Request Server\ALCHSERV.INI) to reflect this change. DCOM Local Launch and Activation permission for the Alchemex Smart Reporting COM Server Application. See Cannot Create ActiveX Component in Installation Troubleshooting for details on how to modify the security permissions. DCOM Local Launch and Activation permissions for the Microsoft Excel Application. See Permission Denied in Installation Troubleshooting for details on how to modify the security permissions. View the Request service log file The Request Service runs tests (similar to those found in the Test Page) upon start-up, the results of those tests are written to a log file on the local system. This will open that log file. Please Note: Set the Service Logon Credentials before trying to start the Request Service
Please Note: All these settings can be modified through Services found in Control Panel > Administrative Tools
Launch Tab From this dialog you can launch all related Alchemex Smart Reporting modules: Report Manager Administrator Tool Test Page Request Manager Security Manager Web Reporting 20 20
Modules Test Page The Test Page helps to specifically diagnose installation problems. For clients who do not have Alchemex Smart Reporting installed. When running a report from the Web Reporting and then opening on the client machine (with no Alchemex Smart Reporting installed) some of the buttons and Excel function in our templates (e.g. Income Statement, Drill Down, etc...) require certain DLL files to be installed on the client machine. The Shared Libraries places theses critical DLL files on client machines who do not have Alchemex Smart Reporting installed
Request Manager The Request Manager is an Administration tool that lets you (an Administrator) view all the requests (not limited by User) that are running or have been run through the Web Reporting module. You can change the status of these requests using the Tasks panel
Security Manager The Security Manager is an Administration tool that lets you (an Administrator) manage Roles (User Groups) and assign Users and Reports to each Role. When security is enabled the Web Reporting User will be required to login and then will only have access to the Reports selected for the Role that that User belongs to. Please Note: When Apply to Web Reporting only is selected, Alchemex Smart Reporting Security Manager applies only to the Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Reporting module. How to: Set Security On or Off: Check or Un-check the Security On checkbox. Manage Roles (Add, Delete, Rename): Click the Add button (under the Roles window) to Add a new Role. Click the Delete button (under the Roles window) to Delete a Role. Right click on a Role (in the Roles window) and select the Rename menu option to rename a Role
Manage Users (Manager Users > Add, Delete, Rename, Change Password) Click the Manager Users button to reveal the User options window. Click the Add button (in the Users window) to Add a new User, you will be prompted for a Username and Password. Click the Delete button (in the Users window) to Delete a User. Click the Rename button (in the Users window) to Rename a User. Click the Change Password link (in the Users windows) to change a password. Select which Users belong to which Roles. Select the relevant Role. Check or un-check the User s names (in the Users Tab on the right) to select or un-select the Users that belong to the selected Role. Select which Reports belong to which Roles. Select the relevant Role. Check or un-check the Reports names (in the Reports Tab on the right) to select or un-select the Reports that belong to the selected Role. (One Click Select) 24 24
Web Reporting The The Web Module enables reporting from a central location. The user simply navigates to the web site (configured in the Web Configuration Tool / Internet Information Services) using a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 7). At this point, if security is enabled (in the Alchemex Smart ReportingSecurity Manager), the user will be required to login and will have NO access to ANY reports until they do so. Once authenticated the user can select a report, set any parameters associated with that report, choose an output format and run the report. The Request Service will then pick-up the report request and run the report. The user will be notified via the Browser Request Manager as to the status of the request and also when the report is completed. How to: Select a Report: Double click on the top folder to show the list of folders under it. Click on the desired folder to show the list of reports in that folder. Click on the desired report to select it. Once a report is selected, the parameters and options (for that report) will be shown in upper right pane. Set a Parameter: Type the desired value into the appropriate textbox or click the button to the right of the textbox (if any) to select an option from a list. Choose an Output Format: Select an option from the list labelled File Format. Excel Compressed Excel file. HTML HTML Page PDF PDF Document (requires Excel 2007) Run a Report: Click the Run Report button. Download a Completed Report: Click the Download link in the Browser Request Manager
The Community The Alchemex Smart Reporting Community is an online facility that allows you to download reports over the internet directly into your system. You should check the community on a regular basis for new reports as there may be reports that you can download that will add value to your business. Accessing the Community The Community is launched from the Report Manager by selecting Home in the Object Window, or from the Administrator Tool by selecting Enterprise in the Object Window, and then clicking on the Community icon (or the menu Alchemex Smart Reporting Community under the tools menu). The Community Download Centre tool will be open. Open the Template Pack that you are interested by double clicking on it in and select a report to download. The properties screen for the download shows some information about the report, including a Name, Description Download file Size and a Preview URL. To have a look at what the report output looks like click on the button next to the Preview URL. A preview will be launched in your web browser
Downloading a Report Having selected the report that you wish to download simply click on the icon (or from the Tools menu select Download). You will be prompted to enter your Company password. The report will download and the Import facility will be launched. You will be prompted with the information and the selections as shown below. Here you will have to assign the report to an existing connection and an existing report folder. Having made your selections click the Import Button. The Report will be imported and will then be available for use in the Report Manager tool
Tips The Request Service logon and Web Reporting Anonymous User accounts must have the following permissions: Rights to logon as a service. Read / Write access to the Alchemex Smart Reporting Web Reporting folder and subfolders. Remember to use the Test Page to ensure that the permissions are set correctly. If this is the first time the user account has been used to logon to the workstation, launch Microsoft Excel to configure it for the user account. Please note that the Web Reporting module is not capable of performing the following: Editing reports (it is a report running interface) Using PICKLIST and PICKLISTM for connections (although PICKLISTA can be used) Executing Dynamic Drill Downs Running Cube Reports Using multiple report repositories Other things to be aware of when running Web Reporting : Report writers should pay extra attentions to data volume efficiencies as the Excel books have to be downloaded over HTTP. For intranet this may not be a problem but good practice would be to minimise file sizes wherever possible. In particular reports omit fields that are not used and should pre-aggregate data by using aggregates (e.g. SUM) on the report display fields which represent values. This ensures that small data sets are dumped into reports and Excel files sizes are minimised. The Security Manager can maintain its own set of users as reports can be deployed to anyone on an intranet or internet
