5 Release Notes These Release Notes are for IBM XIV Gen3 Storage System Version Release date 15 Nov 2013 What's new in IBM XIV software version IBM XIV software version for IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 delivers the following: v Data-at-rest encryption of XIV-stored data v Hyper-Scale Consistency allowing a coordinated snapshot of multiple consistency groups across multiple XIV machines v RESTful API support, offering XIV monitoring and automated provisioning to cloud environments v Quick-start synchronous mirroring via Offline initialization Data-at-rest encryption v Encryption always applied on hard drives and SSD cache v No performance degradation v Centrally manage and simplify the encryption key life cycle using Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager v Hot encrypt: Data is encrypted seamlessly without performance impact when upgrading an encryption-ready XIV systems to this code release. v Supports all capacity points (4TB, 3TB, 2TB, 1TB) 800 GB flash drives v 800 GB SSD caching for 4TB-capacity point systems v Maintain or improve cache performance levels with 4TB drives, when compared to smaller drive configuration with 400GB flash drives IBM Hyper-Scale Consistency Applications may have multiple volumes spread over multiple XIV machines. Starting with this release, customers can coordinate a snapshot of all the application volumes across multiple XIV machines. IBM Hyper-Scale Consistency is enabled via XIV enhanced command line, allowing pausing and resuming of I/O operations to whole consistency groups. When I/O is paused across all the involved machines and consistency groups, snapshots that would be taken near-instantly across all, will provide a crash consistent data set for the application. IBM Hyper-Scale Consistency works in conjunction with an application level freeze or backup mode to create application consistent snapshots. Customers, ISVs and IBM partners can develop data protection solutions empowered by Hyper-Scale Consistency using the product documentation and upcoming best practice documents. RESTful API An API that provides a native XIV interface for cloud and general Copyright IBM Corp

6 application integration. RESTful API supports monitoring and provisioning with the GET, PUT, POST and DELETE directives.. A superb Exchange end-user experience for XIV customers XIV customers benefit from a superb Exchange end user experience as demonstrated by top XIV performance results in the Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) for Microsoft Exchange 2013, with 120,000 mailboxes. v Scope of test: 120,000 mailboxes, 2 GB each, 24 mailbox servers; stored on an XIV Gen3 with flash caching and at 88% utilization. v Results showed 0.16 IOPS per mailbox. v XIV performed 4X faster than the next highest vendor (EMC VNX 5700) that tested ~10,000 mailboxes. Offline initialization of a synchronous mirror v Offline initialization establishes a faster initial replica of the Master mirror volume, on the Slave mirror volume, by locally copying a recent replica onto the slave, thus minimizing the duration of online initialization across WAN lines. v As of this release, this capability applies to synchronous mirrors, in addition to the already supported offline initialization of asynchronously mirrored volumes. Availability of Host Attachment Kits (HAK) IBM XIV Host Attachment Kit The latest IBM XIV Host Attachment Kit (HAK) version can be downloaded from the IBM Fix Central website: support/fixcentral IBM Storage Host Software Solutions Information Center For detailed usage information, refer to the IBM Storage Host Software Solutions Information Center: strhosts/ic. Limitations 1. IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility applies to systems located within the same data center. 2. Using Hyper-Scale Mobility to mobilize volumes that are mapped to Unix or Linux hosts, and are backed-up using IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager version 3.2 or earlier, is not supported. 3. IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility cannot be applied directly on a volume that belongs to a consistency group. Before such a volume can be moved using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, it must be removed from the consistency group. 4. IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility does not apply to volume snapshots. When the migration is changed to proxy state, all snapshots of the pertinent migrated volume are deleted automatically. 5. IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility does not migrate a volume that is in a mirroring relationships. Before a volume can be moved using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, its mirroring relationship must be deleted. 6. Using Hyper-Scale Mobility to mobilize volumes that are mapped to Windows Server hosts, and are backed-up using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy, with IBM XIV Provider for Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) version or earlier, is not supported. 2 IBM XIV Gen3 Storage System: Release Notes for version

7 To use Hyper-Scale Mobility in this case, IBM XIV Provider for Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) version or later must be installed. Note: IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Windows is relying on Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy. To use Hyper-Scale Mobility with IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Windows, IBM XIV Provider for Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) version or later must be installed. 7. Using Hyper-Scale Mobility to mobilize volumes that are mapped to Windows Server hosts, and are protected by IBM Storage Enabler for Windows Failover Clustering version or earlier, is not supported. To use Hyper-Scale Mobility in this case, IBM Storage Enabler for Windows Failover Clustering version or later must be installed. Fixed issues SYS When an SNMP server is defined by the server's DNS name, only its IPv4 address records are looked up and used. Severity Affected versions: and up. SYS The statistics_get XCLI command provides incorrect monthly aggregation and up SYS The ILLEGAL_BITS_VALUE completion code is returned whenever the length of a private key is not a multiply of 8. 8 SYS The newline parameter of the pki_set_pkcs12 SSL import command does not support an * as a value. Severity Affected versions and up SYS Running the host_update XCLI command with the iscsi_chap_name parameter without specifying the -y flag, the command may fail. Severity Affected versions and up SYS The LOW_SPARES event is emitted when there are no spare disks, instead of two spares disks and up SYS When running the statistics_get XCLI command with different time intervals, the values do not add up correctly SYS The ipinterface_update XCLI command has no default value and cannot define an IPv6 address if an IPv4 address was not previously defined. 9 SYS When QoS is enabled, the interface node (i_node) may encounter a failure whenever the module uptime is a multiple of 497 days (497, 994, 1491, etc). If the defect occurs on multiple XIV interface modules at the same time, this could cause a Loss of Access. High impact and up SYS In very rare cases a specific internal process may fail and may lead to loss of access. High impact and up SYS The data migration commands dm_define and dm_activate might fail if the migration source is an XIV system with version and up SYS When using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, during the Proxy phase, while the host is mapped to both the source volume and the destination volume (the source volume serves as a proxy to the destination), if the user tries to delete the target using the target_delete XCLI command, the command succeeds without cleaning up the proxy volumes and up SYS The statistics_get XCLI command parses historical data that is stored on an XIV internal file system. When the systems is under high IO load running statistics_get XCLI may fail with MCL_TIMEOUT_EXPIRED return code. Fix: The algorithm for searching for relevant statistics records has been improved. Under rare conditions the command may still fail, in those conditions retrying the command immediately after it fails will succeed and up Release Notes 5

10 SYS Hot upgrade from code level to b code level may lead to a lost of access to some of the hosts. Moderate and up SYS Adding support of 14.x IP addresses for management ports SYS In very rare cases, during the replication of a volume that is configured as an asynchronous mirroring master, if the volume was originally migrated from another storage system in the past using XIV Data Migration, data access to the system me be lost. High impact - Serious and up SYS In rare cases, the statistics_get XCLI command may report only zeros and up SYS An XIV Gen3 system upgraded to code version 11.3.x or higher, using iscsi connectivity and SSD caching, may hit a memory depletion condition when maintenance tools (such as XRAY) are run on the modules. This condition may have impact on various system management functions and in rare cases could lead to loss of access. Workaround: Contact IBM Support. 11 Known issues SYS Events configured to be sent to the Center via SMTP, are sent through the Management IP interface instead of the VPN interface. Workaround: Configure the VPN interface Netmask to include the Center's subnet and up SYS Resizing a pool (reducing its volume capacity) does not trigger the STORAGE_POOL_VOLUME_USAGE_INCREASED event when crossing the preset threshold. Workaround Pay special attention when resizing down a pool. Severity Affected versions and up SYS When using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, on the Proxy phase, while the host is mapped to both the source volume and the destination volume (the source volume serves as a proxy to the destination), the system will not display a warning upon unmapping host from the proxy. Workaround: Prior to unmapping the Proxy, verify that: v The host is mapped to the volume on the Destination system v IOs are actually being executed on that path You can do that either from the host side or by using the XIV statistic tools on the Destination system. Improvement and up SYS The following XCLI commands are completed successfully although the user that serves as input does not exist: v encrypt_recovery_key_generate v encrypt_keyserver_rekey v encrypt_recovery_key_rekey Release Notes 7

12 Workaround Make sure the user exists (use the user_list XCLI command) before running these commands. High impact - Serious SYS The perf_class_list XCLI command does not display more than 55 hosts associated with a performance class and up SYS The statistics reported by the system for the I/O rates between an IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility proxy system and its IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility destination system might be higher than those reported from the host to the proxy system. This results from host IOs broken down into several IOs between the proxy and the destination. Severity Affected versions and up SYS In rare cases, trying to set a certification using the PKI_SET_PKCS12 XCLI command may fail. Workaround Run the command again SYS Deleting a user certificate reverts the system the XIV generic certificate instead to the system's unique certificate. 13 SYS The encrypt enabling process may fail due to long time-out received from TKLM server or TKLM server ip was defined wrongly. Event ENCRYPT_ENABLE_COMPLETED will not be presented in this case. And system will be not encrypted. The failure is visible via the encrypt_keyserver_list XCLI command. Workaround: Use no more than 4 IP configurations for TKLM servers. Validate that the TKLM IP address is configured correctly and the server is responsive SYS Creating more than 6500 Consistency Group snapshots may result in Tivoli Storage Productivity Center disconnections. Workaround: Create the snapshots in smaller batches. Moderate and up SYS Running the encrypt_enable XCLI command immediately after defining a key server: v The command returns Command executed successfully. v Encryption is not enabled. v The ENCRYPT_ENABLE_NOT_COMPLETED event is issued. Workaround: Wait 10 seconds and retry SYS Listing the security administrators (through running the ldap_user_list XCLI command and the role parameter is set to securityadmin), the command fails and the following completion code is displayed: LOGIN_FAILURE_USER_NOT_AUTHENTICATED_BY_LDAP_SERVER. Workaround: Make sure that the xiv_user entry on LDAP has the user_name_attrib field populated. Release Notes 9
