1 QUICK START GUIDE While Internet Explorer 11 does not look that much different to what you are used to, there are a few useful features that have been added/enhanced that may make your life easier. ADDRESS BAR SEARCH The Address Bar where you type the address of the website now also acts as a search bar. This means you can either type in the address of the website you wish to visit, or you can enter an incomplete address or particular words you wish to search and your current search engine will search for it. ACCESSING FMS To access the internal FMS, you will be used to typing in Funding, however this won t initially work and will instead just search for the word Funding. On first use you should be prompted, asking if you want to go to choose Yes. Alternatively, you can type into the Address Bar. Once the site has been accessed either way, Funding should then work. 2 PINNED SITES For websites that you frequently visit, with Internet Explorer 11 you can now pin web pages to your taskbar so they are just one click away. UNPINNING SITES If you no longer want or need the website to be pinned to your Taskbar then this can be easily removed by right clicking the icon on the Taskbar and selecting Unpin this program from taskbar. To do this, you will need to drag the icon in the Address Bar down to your Taskbar: ACCESS FREQUENTLY VISITED SITES One way to quickly access sites you frequently visit is to right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the Taskbar: The web page will now appear as an icon on your Taskbar and will launch when you click it: Page 2

3 ACCESSING THE FAVOURITES CENTRE The Favourites Centre allows you to add favourite websites and view your internet history: 3. Check/change the Name and click Add: Click to display the Favourites Centre: 4. A link to the website will be added to Favourites: Access your Favourites Access your Internet History Note: to organise your favourites, click the arrow next to the Add to Favourites icon and select Organise Favourites: To add a favourite website: 1. Search for the site you wish to add to Favourites 2. With the site displayed, click the Add to Favourites icon: From here, you can Create Folders, Move, Rename or Delete favourites Page 3

4 ADDING TO THE FAVOURITES BAR In addition the Favourites centre, The Favourites Bar allows you to add frequently used websites that you can easily access. To add to the Favourites Bar: ADDING A SEARCH PROVIDER To change the default search provider to Google: 1. Click into the address bar and select Add: 1. Search for the site you wish to add to the Favourites Bar 2. With the site displayed, click the Add to Favourites bar icon: 2. Select Add-ons and select Google: Alternatively, drag the website from the address bar to the Favourites bar. The site will then be added to the Favourites bar: 3. Click Add on the following window: Note: right-click on the link in the Favourites bar to rename or delete it. Page 4

5 TABS NEW TABS PAGE When you open a new Tab your frequently visited websites will be listed, with the sites you visit most at the top and lesser visited ones underneath: You can then do the same process with another Tab, by dragging it to the right hand side of the page. This Tab will then snap into place and you will be able to view the two Tabs side by side. ENHANCED TABS Enhanced Tabs allows you to view two web pages side by side at one time. To do this, drag the Tab of the first page you want to view to the left hand side of the page. A semi-transparent box will appear which shows you where the webpage is going to go. When you release the mouse button the page will snap into place. Page 5

6 NOTIFICATION BAR Historically, Internet Explorer has used Pop-Ups to highlight any important messages you may need to know. Now a Notification Bar will appear at the bottom of the page. The messages are more informative as well as easy to understand and act on. THE DOWNLOAD MANAGER Internet Explorer 11 has a Download Manager where you can see all the files that are being downloaded / have been downloaded. From here you can see the location where they are stored and open the file directly from the Download Manager. You can also pause and restart files that are currently being downloaded. You access the Download Manager by clicking on the small cog icon in the top right corner of Internet Explorer and selecting View Downloads. Page 6
