3 TuchPad Muse (Multi tuch) The muse pad is nw capable f recgnizing multiple fingers fr: 2 Finger scrll yu can scrll windws using tw fingers. 2 Finger duble tap yu can simultaneusly tap. Tw fingers twice n the TuchPad t launch the applicatin f yur chice. Pinch Zm delivers zming functinality in many applicatins. Rtating prvide cnvenient gestures fr rtating phts and ther bjects. 3 Finger Press prvides a shrtcut fr launching a specified applicatin r applicatins. 3 Finger Flick enhances navigatin fr a variety f applicatins. Yu can use the Three Finger Flick gesture fr brwsing the Internett r scrlling thrugh phts in a pht viewer windw. Fingerprint Reader used fr bimetric lgin t the cmputer. CAPs Lck light n the CAPs lck key instead f bezel. An Intrductin t Windws 7 Start Menu The Start buttn is lcated in the bttm left crner f the screen. Click the Start buttn t pen the startt menu. On the left Applicatins and Dcuments Shrtcuts (Pinned & Recent) Search bar On the right Cmputer shrtcuts Shutdwn and Restart ptins Cntrl panel 3

4 Click All Prgrams t view list f available prgrams n the ThinkPad. Use the pwerful Search bar t search the entire ThinkPad fr files and prgrams. As text is being entered int the search bar, all matching files, prgrams, Cntrl Panel and mail items are displayed. Windws 7 Taskbar Micrsft has revamped the Taskbar, making it an all in ne bar. Prgrams can be put in the taskbar by dragging r pinning them t the bar. Simply click n a prgram in the All Prgrams menu, then drag t put it in the taskbar. Pin: Right click dcuments r prgrams in the Start menu t pin them t the taskbar r t the Start menu. 4

5 Jump List: Right click a prgram in the taskbar t find and perfrm mst cmmn functins assciated with that specific applicatin. Jump list als acts as a histry f each applicatin. Fr example if yu right click n Internet Explrer in the taskbar, mst brwsed websites are displayed. Quick Peek: Hver the muse ver any prgram n the taskbar t preview all pen windws using that prgram. Shw/Hide Desktp: A small bar n the far right crner f the taskbar. Hver ver it t just lk at the desktp, and click n it t minimize windws and view the desktp. (This is called Desktp Preview r Aer Peek.) Gadgets: T view available Gadgets, right click n the desktp, click n Gadgets, then select gadgets as yu wish. Snap: Use the Snap feature t cmpare files r items in tw different prgrams by dragging ne windw t the edge f the screen n the left, and drag the ther windw t edge f the screen n the right. Windws then snap int place, side by side. Quick Maximize: Click and drag windws t the tp f the screen t be quickly maximized. Shake: Just click a pane and give the muse a shake. Every pen windw except that ne instantly disappears. Jiggle again and yur windws are back. Presentatinn Directr Press Fn + F7 n the keybard t view available prjectin and external mnitr ptins. Click n Duplicate t prject in the classrm. (On previus ThinkPads, this was the scene clapper icn. ) 5

6 Custmizatin Right click the desktp t custmize the desktp and change settings. View: change icn sizes, aut arrange icns, shw desktp gadgets Srt by: name, size item type, date mdified Screen Reslutin: mdify the reslutin f the screen Gadgets: select available gadgets Persnalize: select backgrund themes r pictures and screensaver, pen the Cntrl Panel, set sunds, etc. Actin Center: The Actin Center lets yu decide whichh Windws 7 alerts yu seee and which yu dn t. Actin Center cnslidates message traffic frm key Windws maintenance and security features, including Windws Defender and User Accunt Cntrl. If Windws requires yur attentin, the Actin Center icn appears in the taskbar. Click it t see alerts and suggested fixes fr any prblems. Fine tune yur chices in Cntrl Panel. Windws Wireless We are nw using Windws Wireless instead f Access Cnnectins. Windws 7 allws users t cnnect t wired and wireless cnnectins at the same time. It is recmmended that users turn ff the wireless antenna when cnnected via an Ethernet crd. Otherwise, leave the wireless radi n t cnnect wirelessly. T cnnect wirelessly: Ensure that the wireless switch is in the n psitin. (Click OK t dismiss the dialg bx that appears.) A balln ppupp will appear asking fr prfile preference (Student, Faculty/Staff, r Admin). 6

7 If balln ppup lists the crrect prfile, click it. Enter WFU username and passwrd t cnnect. If balln ppup is wrng prfile, click Windws Wireless icn, select the crrect prfile, then click Cnnect. Enter/Select Additinal Lgn Infrmatin t enter WFU username and passwrd. Enter yur WFU username and passwrd. Navigatin and Data Management Data The size f the hard drive has allwed us t create a dataa partitin (D:). Flders may appear t be extraneus, but ften times they are abslutely necessary. 7

8 Data Backups Current data backups are imperative. Backup entire D: drive (partitin) t be sure yu get all f yur files. When installing new applicatins n yur ThinkPad, ensure that they reside in a subflder f D:\UserData s that they ll autmatically be included in yurr backups If yu have plenty f space (500gb drives are cmmn), create a flder with the date and cpy the cntents f yur D: drive Use several methds f making backups, such as external hard drivess and DVDs. Instructins t backup t DVD: Click Start menu Click WFU Backup Click Burn.Nw Lenv Editin (flder) Click Burn.Nw Lenv Editin Click Create Disc Click New Prject Click Data Disc Click DVD Click OK Drag backup flder (r cntents) frm external hard drive t DVD See the status bar fr infrmatin n hw many discs it will take fr the backup (Burn.Nw can span several discs) Click the Burn icn t start the backup Always test yur backup by spt checking sme files n the disc itself just cpy ne r tw f the files ver t yur desktp and pen them t make sure it wrks kay. Data may nt be entirely transferred, even when the backup appears cmplete. Antivirus Prtectin Symantec Endpint Prtectin The new versin f Symantec (nw called Symantec Endpint Prtectin) has enhanced scanning capabilities. It is still encuraged hwever, that users still run Malwarebytes and Spybt t remve spyware. (Dwnlad links fr these prgrams are lcated in the Start menu in the WFU Security and Antivirus flder.) 8

9 By default, the hard drive scan is scheduled t run every Tuesday at 11:00am. If users prefer a different day and time, fllw thesee steps: Duble click n yellw shield icn in Ntificatin Area t pen Symantec Click n Scan fr Threats in left pane Right click n WFU Default Tuesday Scan and select Edit Click n Scan Schedule tab and change day and time as desired Please remember that a weekly scan is imperative. Nw mre than ever, we must be vigilant abut prtecting ur data frm viruses and spyware. Fingerprint Authenticatin There is a new feature n the T410 called Fingerprint Authenticatin. This prvides a methd t lgin t the ThinkPad securely by scanning yur fingerprint. The fingerprint scanner is lcated just t the right f the tuch pad belw yur keybard. T use this system, click the Enrll Yur Fingerprints icn n desktp. A wizard steps yu thrugh the prcess. Multiple fingers n either hand may be enrlled. Please nte that each time yur netwrk passwrd is changed using CTRL ALT DEL, the Fingerprint Authenticatin must be reset by simply pening the Enrll Yur Fingerprint tl and re typing yur credentials. Fingerprint Authenticatin n can, f curse, be bypassed, by clicking the Other Credentials buttn n the Windws startup screen and entering yur lgin credentials. The ThinkPad can als be pwered n r awakened using fingerprint authenticatin. A small green light n the fingerprint scanner indicates that it is available t use. 9

11 An Intrductin t Thunderbirdd 3 The tabbed interface is the mst significant change t Thunderbird. Just like a web brwser, reading new messages is nw dne in tabs instead f separate windws. When a message is duble clicked, the message pens in a new tab. Nte the repsitined buttns. A separate windw appears nly when creating a New message r a Replying t a message in the Inbx.
