Windows 95/98 Infoway Connection Instructions 1/4/2002; rev. 1/9/2002 The following are the basic steps for setting up your computer for a PPP connection to the library s Infoway Internet service. A PPP connection only gives you the ability to connect to the Internet, using Infoway s dial-up lines for access. This connection does NOT provide a Web browser or an reader, only the connection that allows the Web browser or reader to function over the Internet. In addition to a PPP connection, your computer needs to have a Web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The Web browser is the program that allows you to use the Internet, once you have successfully connected using the PPP connection. What You Need to Get Started Obtain an Infoway account, available from the Reference Desk at Farmington Public Library. An Infoway account is free, and gives you one hour of Internet access each day. Step 1 Verify that the Dial-up Networking is Installed Select the following (point with your mouse and click the left mouse button): Start (button in lower left corner of computer screen display) Settings (pop-up menu choice ) Control Panel (pop-up menu choice) Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 1 of 12
Double-click Add/Remove Programs Select the tab Windows Setup Click once on Communications, to highlight it Click on the button Details Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 2 of 12
Make sure that the Dial- Up Networking option is checked, then click OK. If Dial-Up Networking is NOT checked: Click once inside the box. You will be returned to Windows Setup. Click OK. Windows will attempt to install the needed drivers. You will need your Windows Installation Disks or CD (the library does not provide these). Step 2 Verify that the Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed Select the following (point with your mouse and click the left mouse button): Start Settings Control Panel [See illustration on page 1] Double-click on the icon Network Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 3 of 12
Select the tab Configuration (more than one tab may be present) Make sure that both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are present. (It is okay if additional components are also listed.) Skip to Step 3, on page 6 of these instructions. If the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP components are NOT present, they must be added. Proceed with the instructions below. To add Dial-Up Adapter: Inside the Network configuration window (pictured above), click on the button Add. Click once on Adapter, to highlight it. Click once on the button Add. Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 4 of 12
Scroll down the Manufacturers list until you can select Microsoft. Click once on Microsoft, to highlight it. Under Network Adapter, click once on Dial-Up Adapter, to highlight it. Click the button OK. To add TCP/IP Protocol: Inside the Network configuration window (pictured above), click on the button Add. Click once on Protocol, to highlight it. Click once on the button Add. From the Manufacturers list, select Microsoft. Click once on Microsoft, to highlight it. Under Network Protocol, click once on TCP/IP, to highlight it. Click the button OK. NOTE: During these installations, you may need your Windows installation disks or CD (the library does not provide these). Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 5 of 12
Step 3 Configure TCP/IP Protocol You should still have the Network configuration window open: Click once on TCP/IP to highlight it. Click once on the button Properties. Note that ONLY the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP need to be installed. If your computer is not on another network, you may remove all other components. Within the TCP/IP Properties window, there are four sections that need to be configured (displayed on the next two pages). Do NOT change any other settings! Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 6 of 12
Select the tab IP Address, by clicking once on it. Select Obtain an IP address automatically, by clicking once inside the radio button. Select the tab WINS Configuration, by clicking once on it. Select Disable WINS Resolution, by clicking once inside the radio button. Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 7 of 12
Select the tab Gateway, by clicking once on it. Do NOT add any gateway values. REMOVE any values listed under Installed gateways by highlighting each value and clicking the button Remove. Select the tab DNS Configuration, by clicking once on it. Select Enable DNS, by clicking once inside the radio button. Click once inside Host dialog box, and type your first name. Click once inside Domain dialog box, and type infoway.lib.nm.us Add the following DNS Server Search Order entries: Type each number inside the top box, then click the button Add. (the number will then appear in the box below, as shown) Leave the Domain Suffix Search Order empty. If any entries are present, REMOVE them. After correctly entering all settings as shown, click once on the button OK. Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 8 of 12
You will be asked if you wish to restart your computer. Click YES Step 4 Set up the Connection Icon Double-click on the icon My Computer, located on your desktop, usually in the upper left corner. Double-click on the icon Dial-Up Networking Double-click on the icon Make New Connection Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 9 of 12
Click once inside this dialog box, then type Infoway Select a modem should already be set for the type of modem in your computer Click once on the button Next > Click once inside this dialog box, then type the telephone number for the Infoway Internet Service: Click once on the button Next > Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 10 of 12
Click once on the button Finish to complete setting up your dial-up connection. The set-up for your dial-up connection to Infoway is now complete. Verify the existence of your Infoway connection: Double-click on the icon My Computer, located on your desktop, usually in the upper left corner. Double-click on the icon Dial-Up Networking. The Dial-up Networking window will now show a new icon, labeled Infoway. (If your computer has been set up for other Internet service providers, each Internet provider will have an icon in this window.) Optional Create a shortcut icon for Infoway on your desktop: Right-click on the Infoway icon and select create shortcut from the pop-up menu. You will see a message, Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead? Select Yes. Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 11 of 12
Step 5 - Getting Connected (Dialing in) to Infoway Double-click on the shortcut icon for Infoway on your desktop OR, if you did not create a shortcut icon, double-click on the icon My Computer (usually in the upper left corner of your desktop), then double-click on the icon Dial-Up Networking. Double-click on the icon Infoway to open the Connect to window shown below Click inside this dialog box and type your Infoway username Click inside this dialog box and type your Infoway password Note: Your username and password MUST be typed EXACTLY as they appear on your Infoway account record. Select the button Connect If your computer settings are correct, after 20 to 30 seconds you should see a message saying you are connected, and you will notice two small computers flickering in the lower right corner of your screen (next to the clock). In order to use the Internet you must now open an Internet browser program, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. (If your computer does not have a browser installed, the library s reference desk has an Internet Explorer CD-ROM available for checkout.) Farmington Public Library - Reference Page 12 of 12
