2 Windows Operating System (OS) In this lecture we will cover the following (Basics): Parts of Windows 10 Desktop Taskbar Icons Start Menu Using the Mouse (movement and keys) Left and Right Mouse Buttons Click, double click, dragging (Click and Hold) Dragging icons and windows. Shutting down Windows. The subject will be presented while the students are working on the computer to implement the tasks shown. 2

3 Parts of Windows 10 When you start the computer and finish booting, you will see the windows desktop screen. This is the GUI that we will use. The color, background picture (called wallpaper) and icons might be different on each computer depending on how the user wants. Locate the following on your computer screen: Desktop, Icons (if any), Start Menu, Search Box (or magnifying glass), Taskbar and the System tray. You can also see Time & Date. 3

4 Parts of Windows 10: Desktop The Desktop is where you can work and put all your programs icons (if you want). In the picture below you see a Desktop with many icons, Start Menu open and also a window on the desktop. 4

5 Parts of Windows 10: Taskbar The Taskbar is the bar at the bottom of the screen containing the start menu button and other items.. The Taskbar may also contain programs shortcuts used to quickly start a program. The Taskview is a special function that we will talk about later. 5

6 Parts of Windows 10: Icons Icons represent either programs, user files, or folders that you can place on your desktop for quick access. This means that you put the programs you use a lot and your personal files on the desktop if you use them a lot. See the picture on left. There are many icons on the Desktop. Icons shapes are different depending on the application. 6

7 Parts of Windows 10: Start Menu The Start Menu will be shown if you click your mouse Left button on the Start Menu Button on the lower left side of your screen You can also get this menu if you press the key labeled with Windows Icon on the keyboard 7

8 Parts of Windows 10: Start Menu The Start Menu contains all the programs installed on the computer and also important actions such as Settings and Shut Down / Restart. 8

9 Using the Mouse Before we can start using Windows 10 GUI, we must learn some basics about using the Mouse which is a Pointing Device. There many different types but we will consider Standard Mouse and also Touchpad used in laptops. Left Mouse Button Right Mouse Button Left Touchpad Button Right Touchpad Button 9

10 Using the Mouse The mouse control the movement of the pointer on screen. You must learn to be precise where to click and not to click. Left Mouse Button Right Mouse Button Left mouse button is the most important one to do most of the actions. Right mouse button function changes depending on what the user is doing. 10

11 Using the Mouse: Single Click The most important action is to click the left mouse button. This is a single short click. Press the key with your pointing finger. Move the mouse to the Start Menu Button and Click the left mouse button. One Click This will open the Start Menu. Click it again or click on the desktop and the menu will close. Start Menu Open When we say Click, we always mean Left Mouse Button Click. 11

12 Using the Mouse: Right Mouse Click The right mouse button function depends on Where you click. This is a single short click. Press the key with your middle finger. Move the mouse pointer to any free place on your desktop and right-click. A Right Click menu will appear (pop up menu). Desktop pop up menu In this example Personalize is used to change your desktop background if you want (see how). 12

13 Using the Mouse: Right Mouse Click If you right click on the taskbar, a different menu will pop up. This is a special menu for Windows settings (Don t change). To remove it, just click (left mouse button) anywhere outside the menu on the desktop. 13

14 Using the Mouse: Double Click Double clicking works only with left-mouse button and is used to work with icons (applications, files, folders). You click-click (twice) quickly on the button. Move the pointer to the desktop icon for Calculator or Paint application. Double click on each one to start the program. Click.. Click 14

15 Using the Mouse: Dragging Dragging is a special action that is used to Move items. You point the mouse on an item, click and HOLD. Then keep holding while you move the mouse. This is known as Dragging. Release (leave the mouse button), when done. Click.. HOLD Point on the Paint or Calculator icon, drag to different place on desktop. Drag 15

16 Using the Mouse: Dragging Dragging is also used to move the window of an application or folder (We will see later). To drag the Calculator, place the pointer on top of its window, drag to new location. Drag 16

17 Closing a window or an application The easiest way to close a window you open or an application is by clicking on the (x) at the top-right corner. There are other ways that we will study later. 17

18 Shutting Down Windows When you finish using the computer, you must turn it off. One of the ways to do this is to open the Start Menu Click on Power Click on Shut down 18
