1 a Avid Unity MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes for the Macintosh and Windows NT Operating Systems Important Information Avid recommends that you read all the information in these release notes thoroughly before installing or using any new software release. n MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 is available from the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center. To access the Knowledge Center: 1. Go to 2. Click Support. 3. Click Knowledge Center. 4. Log in. 5. Choose Avid Unity from the Current Product pop-up menu at the top of the page. 6. Click the Documentation tab, click Release Notes, then click MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 to download a copy of this document. 7. Click the Download tab, then Service Pack 1 to download a copy of the File Manager and the MediaNet for Windows NT client update, and the MediaNet for Macintosh client update. If you are unable to access the Knowledge Center, you can receive a copy of MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 on CD-ROM by contacting Customer Support at AVID (2843).

2 2 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes These release notes describe several problems that can occur in MediaNet Release and how to install the service pack that fixes the problems. The problems are: After increasing the File Manager memory or adding more storage that is different in size from the existing storage, the Administration Tool sometimes displays incorrect allocation group size information. After increasing the File Manager memory or adding more storage, the Administration Tool no longer displays any of the existing allocation groups or workspaces. MediaNet for Macintosh clients do not recognize some nonstandard Macintosh files. These files might have been created by MediaNet for Windows NT clients or other non-macintosh systems. For additional information about these problems see Fixed Bugs in Release Service Pack 1 on page 7. c MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 provides updates to the MediaNet software. Before you install the service pack, you must have MediaNet Release installed on your File Manager and on all of your MediaNet for Windows NT and MediaNet for Macintosh clients.

3 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes 3 Symbols and Conventions These release notes use the following special symbols and conventions: In this document, Avid drive refers to the Macintosh system s internal hard drive. Apple Computer, Inc. names the internal hard drive Macintosh HD. Depending on your system s setup, the internal hard drive might have a different name. A n A c A check mark indicates a bug that has been fixed. note provides important related information, reminders, recommendations, and strong suggestions. caution means that a specific action you take could cause harm to your computer or cause you to lose data. Installing Service Pack 1 You need to install MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 on the following: The MediaNet File Manager All your MediaNet for Windows NT clients All your MediaNet for Macintosh clients Use the installation instructions in the following sections to install the service pack. c Do not uninstall MediaNet Release before installing Service Pack 1. The service pack requires that MediaNet Release be installed because it updates only portions of the MediaNet software. Symbols and Conventions

4 4 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes Updating the File Manager To update an existing File Manager from Release to Release SP1: 1. Locate the Avid Unity MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 for Windows NT. It might be in a folder on the desktop if you downloaded the files from the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center or on a CD-ROM if you ordered the service pack through Avid Customer Support. If you have the files in a folder, double-click the folder to open its window. If you have the filed on a CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM into the File Manager CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM does not auto-start after approximately 1 minute, start the installation manually double-clicking My Computer on the desktop and then double-clicking the CD-ROM icon. The CD-ROM window opens. 2. Double-click the Setup or Setup.exe icon. The Avid Unity window opens. 3. Accept the default values supplied by the Install Wizard. 4. In the Setup Type list box, click Avid Unity Server Support. 5. Continue to accept the default values supplied by the Install Wizard. 6. Click Finish to install the File Manager software and the MediaNet for Windows NT client software, and reboot the File Manager. 7. Log in to the File Manager. 8. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Avid Unity MediaNet, and then click Server Monitor. The Avid Unity Monitor window opens. The release number in the lower-right portion of the Server Monitor window should now read File Manager Version: SP1. Installing Service Pack 1

5 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes 5 9. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Avid Unity MediaNet, and then click Administration. The Administration Tool window opens. 10. Choose About from the Help menu. The About dialog box opens. The release number in the lower-right portion of the window should read Version SP1. Updating Windows NT Clients To update an existing MediaNet for Windows NT client from Release to Release SP1: 1. Locate the Avid Unity MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 for Windows NT. It might be in a folder on the desktop if you downloaded the files from the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center or on a CD-ROM if you ordered the service pack through Avid Customer Support. If you have the files in a folder, double-click the folder to open its window. If you have the filed on a CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM into the Windows NT client CD-ROM drive. Updating Macintosh Clients To update an existing MediaNet for Macintosh client from Release to Release SP1: 1. Locate the Avid Unity MediaNet Release Service Pack 1 for Macintosh. It might be in a folder on the desktop if you downloaded the files from the Avid Customer Support Knowledge Center or on a CD-ROM if you ordered the service pack through Avid Customer Support. If you have the files in a folder, double-click the folder to open its window. If you have the filed on a CD-ROM, insert the CD-ROM into the Macintosh client CD-ROM drive. Double-click the CD-ROM icon. The CD-ROM window opens. 2. Double-click the Unity SP1 Updater icon. The License window opens. 3. Read the license agreement and click Accept. The Avid Unity SP1 Updater window opens. n If you click Decline, you will end the installation. 4. Click Update. Service Pack 1 is installed in the Avid Unity folder on the Avid drive. 7 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes 7 n If you attempt to update a client that is not running MediaNet Release or does not have the MediaNet software installed, a dialog box appears telling you that a valid version of the Administration Tool was not found and that the updater only works with Release You must load MediaNet Release and run the updater again. 5. After the update, a dialog box appears telling you the installation was successful and asking if you would like to Continue, Quit, or Restart the Macintosh client. Click Restart. 6. After the Macintosh client reboots, open the Avid Unity folder, select the Administration Tool, and press k-i (Command-I). The version should be Version: SP1. Fixed Bugs in Release Service Pack 1 Previously, after increasing the File Manager memory or adding more storage that is different in size from the existing storage, the Administration Tool sometimes displayed incorrect allocation group size information. The size information, displayed in the Size column, was incorrect. The allocation group size might have been larger or smaller than the actual allocation group size. The updated Administration Tool, for both Windows NT clients (Administration Tool.exe) and Macintosh clients (Administration Tool), fixes this problem. The appropriate application is installed on the File Manager, all Windows NT clients, and all Macintosh clients. Previously, after increasing the File Manager memory or adding more storage, the Administration Tool no longer displayed any of the existing allocation groups or workspaces. When you opened the Drive Set, represented as the Partition Disk Set entry, it appeared to have no allocation groups or workspaces, even though they still existed. The updated File Manager (midwayserver.exe) fixes this problem. This application is installed on the File Manager. Fixed Bugs in Release Service Pack 1

8 8 Release Service Pack 1 Release Notes Previously, MediaNet for Macintosh clients did not recognize some nonstandard Macintosh files. These files might have been created by MediaNet for Windows NT clients or other non-macintosh systems. These files did not open the correct application when you double-clicked their icons on a Macintosh client. The updated Avid Unity extension (Avid Unity in the Extensions folder) fixes this problem. The extension is installed on all Macintosh clients. You must also have File Exchange properly configured to recognize the three-letter file name extensions added to file names by Windows NT. You can also use any of the third-party resource editing applications to change a file to its correct type and creator application. This method might be preferable if you have a number of files that need to have resources changed. n If you opened a file that was created by a MediaNet for Windows NT client using MediaNet for Macintosh Release or earlier, the file s resources were changed to those of the application that opened the file. If this application was different from the application that originally created the file, you must open and save the file using the original application to change the resources back to the original application resources.
