Tutorial 1: Basic functions In this tutorial, you will learn the basic functions of CueluxPro. You will learn to patch and control fixtures, program scenes and play them. Note: This is a tutorial created by a CueluxPro user, this is not an official tutorial! 1.1 Explaining the tutorial layout In this tutorial I use several markings to clearing things out. If I want you to push a button on the screen, it looks like this. When you need to type something on your computers keyboard, <<I say it like this>> 1.2 First look at the software When you start the software for the first time, it looks like this: The software has several parts and buttons to work on, as marked on the picture: 1. The menu buttons: You can select different windows here. 2. Power button: To shut down the software. 3. Undo/Redo/Copy/Cut/Paste 4. The programmer: Here you can control fixtures. 5. Programming buttons: To program, edit, 6. The command line: Commanding the software (explained in another tutorial) 7. Playback buttons: Playbacks without fader control 8. Playback faders: Playbacks with control of a parameter 9. Tempo control: Controlling the tempo of chases 10. Fixture selection buttons: Selecting all, none, next or previous fixture BoydNijsten2014 1
11. Grand Master: Overall intensity control and blackout 12. Groups: To select a group of fixtures at once 13. Fixtures: To select fixtures 14. Palettes: User definable presets for the programmer I ve added a short description of each part, but I ll explain them more extensively when needed. 1.3 Creating, saving and loading show files Maybe you have experimented already with the software. Then you have to start a new show. I ll explain directly how to save and open them. Well, let s start. You can access the File menu by going to Options and then File. Those are both menu buttons. The window you see now has 4 buttons: New, Open, Import and Save as. I can here you ask, where is the normal save button? Well, CueluxPro automatically saves, just like the normal Cuelux, all the data real-time in the XML showfile. So if you create a cue, add a fixture, CueluxPro does save it automatically. So, there is no need to worry when you got a crash for some reason. Ok, to start a new show, simply push New. Easy, isn t it? Every new show gets her own name by itself, named as Show #, with the # just as the next number in the order. The shows are saved in the following directories: Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER>\My Documents\Visual Productions\CueluxPro Windows Vista/7/8: C:\Users\<USER>\Documents\Visual Productions\CueluxPro Mac OS X: /Users/<USER>/Visual Productions/CueluxPro Ubuntu Linux: ~/Visual Productions/CueluxPro Note: Replace the <USER> text with your own username If you want to rename the show, you can do that in the directory as above, or in the software you can use the Save as button. When you push Save as or Open button, you will see a dialog with your directory structure, where you can find and save the showfiles. 1.4 Patching some fixtures For this tutorial, I would like you to patch just some dimmers. To patch fixtures, you have to go to the patch screen. You can access this by pushing Patch and then Fixture, both menu buttons. On the left side, there is just 1 button available to push, the Add button. Because we want to patch some dimmers, we press that button. Now you see a dialog with a lot of manufacturers. You can search one by typing it on your keyboard. As a dimmer is a normal fixture, it is placed in the Generic manufacturer. So, you may type <<Ge>>. Now there are some fixtures in the middle column. I would like you to select Dimmer 01x. Because this fixture has just one mode, the most right column stays empty. Next to that column it says, Count, with four arrows around it. With those you can define the number of the selected fixture you want to add. I would like you to add 16 dimmers for now. After you set Count you may press Add. BoydNijsten2014 2
You now can switch back to the status screen, by pressing Status in the menu buttons area. You can see the 16 fixtures in the middle field. 1.5 Controlling the dimmers Before you can control the dimmers, you have to select them. You can do that by clicking on them. When you like to select multiple fixtures, click and hold on the first, and then drag to the right and down to select them fast. The fixture blocks will light up when they are selected. If you have selected them, you can see that the dimmer fader in the programmer (Chapter 1.1 nr 4) became grey. When you drag and drop the square on the bottom of the fader to the top, you are controlling the dimmer and the light connected to the dimmer will light up. You can select fixtures too with the fixture selection buttons (Chapter 1.1 nr 10.) 1.6 Programming a scene You can program a scene using the programmer. First of all you have to clear the programmer, as every active function will be recorded into a playback. To clear the programmer, press clear, in the bottom-left corner of the programmer. When a function is active, that button is colored red. Sometimes the clear button stays red after 1 click. Well, at the first click, you clear all the functions of the selected fixtures. At the second click it clears the functions of all fixtures. When the selected fixtures have no active functions, or if there are no fixtures selected, it will do the same as the second click. When the programmer is cleared, you can start setting up your lights. You can do that as explained in chapter 1.5. Now select dimmer 1 thru 4, and set their dimmer at 100%. You have set up the lights now. We are now going to store this scene. You can store a scene in 2 places: The playback faders and the playback buttons. The difference between them is, that the playback buttons don t have faders, and just have 1 button, instead of 2 on the playback faders. The buttons under the faders are the flash buttons, and the faders beneath the small grey, still empty windows are the Go+ buttons. Right now, we are going to store the scene we ve created at playback fader 1. You can now press Record (Programming buttons). After you did that, you can press the Go button above the first fader. The small window above it is red now. When it is red, it means the playback is inactive. When you are ready programming the scene, you can clear the programmer again. This is because the programmer has the highest priority in the software, so it overrules every active playback. BoydNijsten2014 3
1.7 Playing a scene Now press the Go button above the first fader. The window above it is now Yellow. This means the playback is paused. You can see in the fixture area that the first 4 dimmers have an intensity of 100% now. When you move the first fader, the intensity of the dimmers will change. You can stop the scene at 2 ways: - Press the Release button, and then the Go button of the fader - Hold the Go button above the fader pressed for more then 3 seconds When the scene is stopped, the window above it will become red again. 1.8 Adding more cues to a cuelist From now, we will call the scenes a cuelist, as a cuelist is a list of cues. Now we are going to add some more cues to the first cuelist. Select the first 4 dimmers, and change the intensity to 0% (just make sure they are active). After that, set the intensity of dimmer 5 and 7 to 75%. Now press the record button again, and again the Go button of fader 1. You will now see a dialog what asks you what you want to do. You can Append, Insert, Replace, Merge or Cancel. We want this second cue to come after the first, so we press Append. The new cue is now stored at fader 1, cue 2. Now clear the programmer. We are now going to make a 3rd cue. Set the intensity of dimmer 6 and 8 to 50%. Append this cue at fader 1 too and clear the programmer. Now start the cuelist again. To go to the next cue, press the Go button. The intensities will be as following: Dim 1 Dim 2 Dim 3 Dim 4 Dim 5 Dim 6 Dim 7 Dim 8 Cue Cue Cue As you can remember, we only had programmed Dim 6 and 8 at 50%. But Dim 5 and 7 are still at their level. This is because CueluxPro is a tracking console. Cuelist based lighting controllers can be either tracking or non-tracking. Tracking means that in a cuelist, only changes need recording. If a light has the same value in two consecutive cues you don't need to store the second value, instead you make sure the second contains 'no' value (inactive) so the first value remains unchanged through those cues. Now you can finish the cuelist as showed beneath, using the steps above Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue Cue BoydNijsten2014 4
1.9 You ve finished this tutorial Congratulations! You ve finished the first tutorial! Don t remove this show; we ll use this in the next tutorial. In tutorial 2, I ll teach you how to modify a cuelist, and the possible options for them. Thank you for following this tutorial! BoydNijsten2014 5
