2 Computer A folder is a container for your files. You can access your folders by clicking Computer in the Start Menu or in the left Navigation Pane of any open folder and choosing the location C: Hard Disk Drive, a Removable Storage Devices or a Network Locations. Libraries You can t store files or folders in a Library but you can include files and folders from different locations in a Library so that you can easily see them in one place. To access a Library click the Libraries button on the taskbar or, click the Start button and choose the Documents, Music or Pictures. There are 4 default Libraries: Documents Music Pictures Videos You may also create your own Libraries. To include a folder or file in a Library, right click it and choose Include in Library. 1/18/2011 Page 2

3 Pin Programs to the Taskbar (replaces the Quick Launch Bar) Pin the programs that you use most frequently to the taskbar so that you can easily access to them at anytime. Right click the program icon on the desktop or the taskbar. Choose Pin this program to the Taskbar. You can also pin the program to the Start menu: Right click the icon on the desktop or taskbar. Choose Pin to Start Menu. Peek at the Desktop (aka Show Desktop) To temporarily view the desktop without closing the windows that you have open click the shaded area in the lower right corner of the taskbar. Preview the Content of Open Windows Point to a program button on the taskbar that has open files and aa preview of the open windows are displayed as thumbnails. Click the thumbnail to open that window. 1/18/2011 Page 3

4 Recent Documents Each program has its own version of Recent Documents. These are called Jump Lists. Right click the program icon on the taskbar to reveal a list of recent documents. Click the document to open it. Personalize Your Computer s Appearance Right click the Desktop and choose Personalize. Choose one of the existing Themes or create your own. Choose wallpaper, sounds, picture, slide show, window color, etc. You can even change the text size! 1/18/2011 Page 4

5 Snap to Arrange and Resize Windows To arrange two windows side by side for comparison: Drag the title bar of a window to the left or right side of the screen until an outline of the window appears. Release the mouse. Drag another window to the other side of the screen to arrange them side by side. To maximize an open window so that it fills the desktop: Drag the title bar of the window to the top of the screen and release the mouse. Shake Windows to Minimize or Restore Them Use Shake to quickly minimize all windows except the one you are working in. Just drag or shake the title bar (of the window that you want to keep open) back and forth. To restore the minimized windows, shake the open window again. The Snipping Tool Capture a screen shot of anything on your desktop and then save it or send it in an . Click the Start button and you will find the Snipping Tool in the list of Programs. If you plan to use it often don t forget to pin it to the taskbar! Sticky Notes Jot down a quick note to yourself using Sticky Notes.
