4 Do not connect the QEI MCAP II or ecap II to the PC before installing the QEI Smartware Software. After installing the Software, follow the instructions to connect the cap control to the PC, and install the usb drivers. Failure to follow the instructions may result in communications failure between the Smartware software and the MCAP II or ecap II cap control. Insert the Smartware CD into the CD-ROM Drive. The software should automatically run and display the following Main Screen : Page 2 of 16

5 Main Screen Selections are as follows: Smartware Installs the QEI Smartware configuration software on your computer. Install Demo Data Installs demonstration historical data that can be viewed using the Smartgraph utility from within the Smartware software. User s Guide QEI Products Acrobat 7.0 User guides for QEI Cap Controls in Adobe pdf format. QEI product brochure in Adobe pdf format. A copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 (An Adobe Reader is required to view the QEI user guides and product brochure. You may already have the reader on your PC). Left-click on the SMARTWARE option to begin the Smartware software installation. The following screen appears: Click NEXT to continue... The following screen appears: Page 3 of 16

6 Accept the terms of the license agreement, and click NEXT...The following screen appears: Click on NEXT to install Smartware to the default directory. The following screen appears: Page 4 of 16

7 Click on INSTALL... The following screen appears... Page 5 of 16

8 The Smartware software will be installed on your computer. When the installation completes, the following screen appears... Click on FINISH to complete the installation and return to the Main Screen. From there, click on EXIT to complete the installation. The installation puts a Smartware Icon on the desktop as follows: If you see a different Smartware Icon, right-click on the Icon, and select Properties, then Change Icon and Ok to select the Smartware Icon above. Installing the usb drivers: After installing the Smartware software on the PC, follow the steps below exactly. 1) Place the cap control AUTO/MANUAL switch in MANUAL position. Page 6 of 16

9 2) Apply power to the cap control. 3) Allow about 15 seconds for the cap control diagnostic tests to complete (Diagnostic tests: The Red CLOSE, Green OPEN, and Yellow AUTO/MANUAL Leds should turn on for approx. four seconds, then turn off for one second, then turn on for approx. four seconds again, and then turn off. Note: On Extended models (those with an LCD display, you will see Testing Flash : Passed and Testing Memory: Passed while the Leds turn on. For Standard models, only the Leds will turn on (since there is no LCD display). 4) Connect the cap control to a usb port on the PC. 5) The PC should open the Found New Hardware Wizard and display the following: 6) Select No, not this time 7) Click on Next to continue. 10 8) Select Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced) 9) Click on Next to continue. The following screen appears: Page 8 of 16

11 10) Select Search for the best driver in these locations and put a check mark in the Include this location in the search checkbox. 11) Click on Browse and find the following folder on your computer : C:/Program Files/QEI, Inc/Smartware/Usb Note: click only on the usb folder, and not on folders or files below it!! The folder path statement in bold above must read exactly as shown in the file box (E:\CDM presently shown in the example above will be replaced). 12) Click on Next 13) The following screen appears... 12 14) When the above window appears, click on Continue Anyway 15) The following screen appears as Windows XP copies the required driver files... Page 10 of 16

13 16) Windows should then display a message indicating that the installation was successful... 17) Click Finish. 18) The Found New Hardware wizard may appear again. 19) If that happens, follow the steps 6 through 17 again to complete the installation. 20) Start the Smartware software. 21) Select Comms, then Establish Communications from the drop-down menus. 22) A message Communications Established should appear. The Smartware unit ID # and firmware version should also now be visible in the bottom right hand corner of the Smartware screen. Page 11 of 16

14 Troubleshooting the usb driver installation: Note: the troubleshooting procedure below should be used only by persons with a moderate understanding of Windows XP. Specifically, the user should have some experience working with the Windows Device Manager. If the capacitor control is not communicating with the PC after installing the drivers, it may have been caused by installation of an incorrect driver. This may especially be the case, if the control was plugged into the PC before installing the Smartware software, or if the previous steps in this guide were not followed exactly. In this case, the incorrect driver may possibly be located and un-installed as follows: 1) Disconnect the control from the usb port. 2) From the Windows task-bar, select Start. 3) Select Control Panel. 15 4) Look for the System icon, and select it. 5) When the System window opens, select the Hardware tab. Page 13 of 16

16 6) From the Hardware window, select Device Manager. Page 14 of 16

17 7) View the list of devices. Look for a yellow question mark or exclamation point over the Universal Serial Bus Controllers entry. On some systems, it may also appear over the Ports (COM & LPT) entry. : Page 15 of 16

18 8) Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers or Ports (COM & LPT) entry (by clicking on the + sign to the left of the entry). 9) Click on the usb driver that has the yellow question mark or exclamation point. Look for a usb driver with a yellow mark. It may say unknown. Click on the driver and hit uninstall to remove it. 10) Make sure that the control has been powered for at least fifteen seconds, for the diagnostic tests (Leds/Flash/Memory) to complete. 11) Connect the control to the usb port. 12) If the removal of the incorrect driver was successful, the Found New Hardware: wizard should appear. 13) Follow steps 6 through 19 under Usb driver installation to install the correct driver.
