Jan 19, 2017 Most of what I cover applies to both Pads and iphones running ios 10. ===================================================== To Start with, let s take a look at some setting you can make from the Settings App. Open the Settings App. 1) Airplane Mode: Do NOT Turn ON. a) When it is off, W-Fi and Bluetooth can be enabled. b) When it is on, both are disabled. i) For faster Charging, turn Airplane Mode On. 2) Wi-Fi: When you tap Wi-Fi, the device looks for wireless internet connections within range. a) If it finds signals, it will present a list of networks available. b) Look for the checkmark in left side of screen. c) Look for symbol to appear in the Status Bar. 3) Do Not Disturb: a moon icon appears in the status bar. a) It will silence phone calls, alerts & notifications. b) During scheduled times like when sleeping. c) Allow calls from: i) Everyone; No One; All Contacts d) Repeated calls: i) From same person ii) Within 3 minutes. (1) e) Silence Options: i) Always ii) When device is locked. f) Turn it ON or OFF two different methods.
2 Page2 i) Method 1 = from the Control Panel ii) Method 2 = from settings 4) General setting up your device for you. a) About touch About i) Name = name given during initial setup. ii) Songs, Videos, Photos = number of items on the device. iii) Applications = the number you have loaded. iv)capacity = you won't get access to all of the storage that's advertised, because it will be used up with system data, preinstalled data (1) Apple s Apps forced on you = 3 GB plus. (a) 23% of the available space. v) Available = your Capacity minus Apps loaded. vi)version = Software Version running on the device. vii) Model Number = Describes series of device record in another place lost or stolen info needed. viii) Serial Number = unique to device - record in another place lost or stolen info needed. b) Software Update It show what version is running now or that an update is required. (1) Plug into a power source for charging. (a) May require a long period (20-35 minutes) (b) May require GB s of download data. (i) Update Apps on device battery they are usually short and quick. (2) Storage and icloud Usage 2 Sections 1. Storage - on the Device; 2. icloud - what you have stored in your icloud account. (3) Storage Used / Available (a) Keep used below the level of Available Storage.
3 Page3 (b) Make more room = (i) Tap Manage Storage = get a list of what Apps have how much storage on idevice. (ii) Tap an App from the list = Info = Storage used by that App plus size of App. (iii) Delete App may be available some Apps cannot be deleted. Note: Deleting an App, moves it from idevice to icloud, = download again it anytime. (4) icloud (a) Total Storage = free 5GB (b) Available Storage from the 5GB. (i) You can always buy more. (c) Tap - Manage Storage. (i) Four Sections 1. PHOTOS 2. BACKUPS 3. DOCUMENTS & DATA 4. MAIL (5) Tap- icloud Photo Library (a) It shows the number of Photos/Videos items in the icloud account. (b) To free up storage, (Tap and Read) manage your photo library in the photos app. (c) See the Total GB s at the bottom. (6) Tap BACKUPS for the device listed. (a) It Shows Latest Backup ; Backup Size ; Next Backup Size. (b) icloud backups don't include: (i) Data that's already stored in icloud, like Contacts, Calendars, Notes, My Photo Stream, and icloud Photo Library.
4 Page4 (ii) Data stored in other cloud services, like Gmail and Exchange mail. (iii) Apple Pay information and settings. (iv) Touch ID settings. (v) icloud Music Library and App Store content (7) Tap DOCUMENTS AND DATA (a) Four Categories (i) IBooks; Other Documents; Files; Notes; imovies (b) It gives you a list of all the documents you have stored in icloud. (8) Tap Mail - Shows how much space on device is taken up by . c) Background App Refresh - allows apps to refresh content using Wi-Fi or cellular. i) Apps run for a period then set to a suspended state. 5) Display & Brightness Adjust Brightness big drain on battery. a) Night Shift - a feature that shifts the colors of the Retina display to the warmer end of the spectrum based on time and location. b) Auto Lock - amount of time that elapses before the device automatically locks or turns off the display, because of no action. c) Lock / Unlock allows magnetic strip to put device asleep. d) Text Size change text size in Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Phone, Notes, and other apps that support Dynamic Type. 6) Siri - is a built-in "intelligent assistant" that enables users to speak voice commands to operate the device and its apps. a) Can send your messages, place calls, check your calendar, etc. b) Siri turn on Siri from Settings. i) Must be connected to the internet.
5 Page5 (1) Either Wi-Fi or cellular. ii) Allow Hey Siri toggle switch. (1) To Setup, must go through an exercise to learn your voice. c) Tap App Support i) Shows a list of Apps on device that use Siri. d) Siri can perform a number of functions, including: i) taking notes, setting reminders, set events on your calendar, place phone calls, launch apps, play music, look up nearby restaurants/ pharmacy s/ or other business places, find movies playing at the theatre, provide answers to basic questions, simply search the web. e) Apps that work with Siri : i) Phone; FaceTime; Dictation; Music; Mail; imessages; Calendar; Reminders; Notes; Contacts; World Clock; Timer; Weather; Web search; Wikipedia search; Find My Friends ; Movies; Sports; Maps; Warning Siri can respond from the lock screen. f) Turn Siri off at Passcode. (Settings > Touch ID &Passcode > Allow Access when Locked section > Todays View; Notification View; Siri; Home Control > turn OFF those to limit Access when locked). 7) Touch ID & Passcode. a) Must enter Passcode only owner can change these settings. i) USE TOUCH ID FOR: (1) IDevice Unlock; Apple Pay; itunes & App Store. ii) FINGERPRINTS: (1) Touch ID only allows five unsuccessful fingerprint match attempts. (2) If your device is lost or stolen, you can immediately disable Touch ID from being used to unlock your device with Find My iphone Lost Mode. (3) Max 5 fingerprints stored on idevice.
6 Page6 8) Battery 4 sections. (1) Battery Percentage - turn on Battery Percentage. (2) BATTERY LIFE SUGGESTIONS ios software suggests. (3) BATTERY USAGE Last 24 Hours / Last 7 Days (4) TIME SINCE LAST FULL CHARGE Usage time will be shown after ipad is fully charged. NOTE: To see how long each app has been open and running in the background, tap (little clock). Under each app, you might see these usage types: (a) Background Activity - means that your battery is used while apps run in the background. (b) Audio - means that apps play audio while running in the background. (c) No Cell Coverage and Low Signal - means that your device is searching for a signal or being used with a low signal. (d) Backup & Restore - indicates that your device has been backing up to icloud or restoring from an icloud backup. (e) Location and Background Location - means that your battery was used when tracking your device. 9) Privacy ios controls which Apps have access to information stored on your device. a) Location Services If Turned OFF, it will be disabled for all Apps. NOTE: Your personalized Location Setting for Apps will be temporarily restored if you use Find My ipad/iphone. i) An App will not appear on this list until it asks permission to use your data. ii) If you allow 3rd party Apps or Websites to use your location data, you are subject to their terms, privacy policies and practices. iii) You can select a App from this list to see which have asked for permission to use that data.
7 Page7 iv)an app won't appear on the list until it asks permission to use your data. v) You can add or remove permission from any app that has asked for access to data. vi)an app can use your data only if you have given it your permission. vii) If you use the App, and an Alert popup asks for permission: (1) Granting permission resets the Privacy setting. b) Diagnostic & Usage - What the Diagnostics & Usage Data logs contain i) The logs don t contain any specific app usage data. ii) They may contain information on how the app was used, i.e. why it crashed, iii) The details contained in these logs pertain to hardware and operating system spec, performance stats, and data about how a particular app was used. (1) The data contained is primarily analytical data that can help Apple research issues and track trends. iv)to turn OFF sending data to Apple: v) Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & Usage. (1) Tap on Don t Send c) Advertising Advertising Identifier is assigned with every Apple ID. i) Apple s advertising system is able to track you across the apps when you sign in with your Apple ID on idevice. ii) The iads appear not just in the third party apps you download from the App Store but also in the stock apps like Safari. iii) iads show up as inline banners or full page pop ups inside apps used on the device. (a) Apple collects data to build adverting groups and assigns you to a group based on your activities. (b) It's called targeted advertising. iv)how to turn off location-based iads.
8 Page8 (a) Tap Settings app. > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. 1. Turn ON or OFF as desired. v) How to enable Limit Ad Tracking (a) Tap Settings app. > Privacy > Advertising 1. Toggle the Limit Ad Tracking switch ON. vi) Reset Advertising Identifier. (a) Resets accumulated data on the device. 1. Once confirmed, ios regenerate new random blank ID. 1) ipad Maintenance keep it clean and running smoothly. Training on how to customize your idevice. a) Keep it Clean. i) Unplug power cord, turn device Off. (1) Oleophobic coating = resist affinity to oil. ii) Wipe screen with microfiber cloth. (1) Spray a small amount of Eyeglass cleaner on microfiber. b) Troubleshooting - Restart/Reset Your iphone i) Difference between Sleep/Wake & OFF (a) The Sleep/Wake button will cause the screen to go dark, the idevice is still running in power saving mode. When it wakes up, the idevice is in the exact same state as when it went to sleep, which includes any problems it was having that made you want to reboot it. ii) OFF - Hold down Sleep Wake Button until slide to power off. (1) idevice goes to OFF mode. (2) After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo. iii) How to force restart. (1) You should force restart your idevice as a last resort, and only if it's not responding to a normal OFF. (a) On an iphone 7 or iphone 7 Plus:
9 Page9 (i) Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo. (b) On an iphone 6s and earlier, ipad, or ipod touch. (i) Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo. iv) Force Quitting an App on an idevice (1) If you have a single misbehaving app on your idevice, you can "force quit" it by doing the following: (a) Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of idevice for a few seconds until a red slider appears. (b) Then press and hold the Home button until the app quits. c) Resetting Network Settings i) Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. (1) This will reset all network settings, including passwords. d) Battery Maintenance i) Apple recommends - go through one full charge cycle per month (1) Meaning = charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down. (a) Helps in recalibrating the battery indicator more accurately. e) Saving Battery to make battery charge last longer. i) Dim Display- (control panel) ii) Keep Wi-Fi ON at all times - less power than 3G/4G. (a) Turn Off Background App Refresh. iii) Choose Fetch in mail App. (Turn OFF Push) (settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars) (1) Select frequency of fetch. iv)turn OFF Location Services (settings > Privacy) v) Turn Off Push Notifications. - (settings > Notifications)
10 Page10 vi)turn OFF Bluetooth (settings > Bluetooth) f) Backup Your ipad. sign up for icloud = 5GB free storage. i) Backup occur every day when: must meet these requirements (1) Wi-Fi Connected. (2) Backup Turned ON. (settings > icloud > Backup ON) (3) Locked. (idevice in Sleep) (4) Connected to a Power Source. ii) Make adjustments (settings> icloud> Backup> Back Up now) g) Saving Space on ipad. i) Delete Apps no longer used. (1) Deleted Apps go to your icloud account. (2) Can be downloaded again anytime again. (3) Use itunes on PC to delete completely. ii) Turn OFF Auto Photo Stream (copy of photos to every device.) Note: My Photo Stream doesn't push photos over cellular connections, only Wi-Fi. (1) Settings > icloud > Photos > OFF h) Clearing Out Space on you ipad. (Settings > General > Storage & icloud Usage > Storage Section > Manage Storage.) i) Tap Apps for more info. ii) Delete Apps to free up Device. (1) Deleted App goes to icloud. (a) Download again anytime. (b) Delete completely using itunes on PC. i) Reboot - What is Reboot on your device? i) idevice has 3 Different conditions: (1) Running
11 Page11 (2) Sleep (3) Off = reboot when you turn it back ON. j) When to Reboot. i) Not operating as expected. k) How to Reboot. i) Hold down Sleep Wake button for several seconds. (1) slide to power off appears. (2) Tap slide to power off. ii) If the Device is frozen or stuck: (will not slide to power off) (a) Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Do not let go. 1. This will force the device to power down. (b) After a Black Screen appears: 1. Hold down the Sleep Wake Button until Apple Logo appears. 2) Tips and Tricks hints a) Capture a Screen Display i) Depress Wake Sleep Button and Home button at the same time. (1) It takes a picture of what is on the display (2) The picture is stored in Photos Moments. b) Make Text bigger. i) Tap Settings ii) Tap General. iii) Tap Accessibility. iv)tap Larger Text. v) Turn On Larger Accessibility Sizes
12 Page12 vi)drag the slider left or right to adjust the font size. c) Block Unwanted imessages i) While viewing a message; (1) To block a number from messaging you, you have to first add it to your contacts and then block it from the Settings app. Here s how. (a) Open the Messages app. (b) Open a message thread for the number you want to block. (c) Save the number as a contact. NOTE: If the number already exists as a contact, proceed to the next step. If you haven t received any messages from a number that you want to block, add it as a new contact. (d) Open the Settings app and tap Messages (e) Scroll down to the Block option. (f) On the Block screen, scroll down to the very bottom and tap Add New (g) Select the contact you want to block and save. d) Deleted an by mistake? i) s delete accidentally or intentionally from your device are still stored in another folder. (1) This folder, called the Trash, allows you to do the following: (a) Permanently delete messages from your device (b) Retrieve and restore deleted s back into the main inbox folder (2) When the Mail app is open. (3) Shake your device. (4) Tap Undo
13 Page13 e) What s the Word? i) Look up a word in text or on the internet without losing your place. (1) Select it. (2) Tap Define in the pop-up menu (a) to see the word s definitions and usage. f) Use Siri Hands Free: ipad i) When ipad is connected to power cord, (1) say Hey Siri (2) speak your request. (a) To turn this feature on, 1. Tap Settings 2. Tap Siri. 3. Tap Allow Hey Siri. 4. Tap Set Up Now. 5. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up "Hey Siri". 6. Tap Done. g) Talk instead of type i) (Settings > General > Keyboards > Enable Dictation) (1) Tap the Microphone dictate button on the keyboard. (2) Speak your message (including punctuation), (3) Tap Done.
