General Location Camera Microphone Speech, inking, & typing Account info Contacts Calendar Call history Messaging Radios Other devices Feedback & diagnostics Background apps Change privacy options Advertising ID identifies your Web behavior to deliver targeted ads. It works like this: if you open the Windows 10 Travel app and also the Calendar app, Microsoft can use that info to show you ads for Expedia or Southwest Airlines, for example. That's assuming the app uses ads to begin with. You won't start seeing banner ads when you open the calculator, but Microsoft Edge (which replaces Internet Explorer as your default Web browser in Windows 10) may run these tailored ads when you go to Bing or Outlook.com. Advertising ID communicates no personal information about you. It's a sort of beacon to deliver targeted ads showing something that you might want to buy. In theory, if the ads are more relevant to you, you're more likely to click them, which helps both the advertiser and the people selling the ad space, and maybe you, too, if you get a better shopping experience. But if you prefer to disable advertising ID, you can do so in the General pane. Note that disabling it does not block ads, only Microsoft's ability to target ads. But don't mistake turning off this setting with achieving more privacy. Turning off these settings just reduces Windows 10's ability to personalize your experience. The SmartScreen filter is a layer that Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer use to help protect you from dangerous or suspicious websites. The filter does this in two ways. One, it analyzes the website for questionable behaviors, like opening fake pop-up windows or redirecting you to other websites. Two, SmartScreen checks the Web address against a list Microsoft maintains of websites that are known to be fraudulent. You get the occasional false positive, meaning that a safe website is accidentally caught in the filter. But for the most 109 P age

part, SmartScreen is a helpful tool, so leaving it on is recommended. This setting helps improve handwriting recognition by sending Microsoft data about how you write. It doesn't send what you actually write. This setting will be grayed out if Windows 10 does not detect a stylus. Since it's not sending personally identifiable info there may no harm in leaving it on. The language setting helps websites detect which language you're using so they can deliver regional info, like maybe a Dow Jones stock ticker for users of US English or rugby scores for users of UK English. The setting also helps websites understand where its users are coming from, which can help them figure out what kind of content or user experience to create. 111 General Location Camera Microphone Speech, inking, & typing Account info Contacts Calendar Call history Messaging Radios Other devices Feedback & diagnostics Background apps Location If this setting is on, each person who signs in to this device can change their own location settings. If it's off, location is off for everyone who signs in. When location services for this account are on, apps and services you al low can request location and location history. If you are using an administrator account, as you will be by default, then you will see the option to disable location info for all user accounts on that device. Below that is a toggle for the specific account that is currently logged in, which will be grayed out if location services are disabled for everyone. Location can be used to let Windows 10 apps display regionspecific info like weather and sports scores, or to show you map locations and shopping choices in your area. If you disable this setting, you can still enter your location info manually -- it just won't be sent automatically. Some apps will use your device's Bluetooth or Wi-Fi functions to determine your location even when your location setting is disabled. You can toggle that feature on and off in the Radios pane (in the list to the left). Bluetooth and Wi-Fi will still function, just without location info. If an app is using your location, you'll see this icon: Location history When location is on, the locations obtained to meet the needs of your apps and services will be stored for a limited time on the device. Apps that have access to these stored locations will appear be low. 111 P age

Learn more about location settings Privacy Statement Choose apps that can use your location The Location privacy setting mainly concerns how your smartphone or other mobile device operates. This setting is common to all smartphones whether they use Windows, ios, or Android. All the operating systems default to the on setting, by the way. This allows your smartphone to use GPS or cell tower triangulation to locate you, and by extension, the nearest coffee shop to your current location when you ask for it. Or to tell you if you need your umbrella today because it is going to rain. If you don't want those features, turn it off. Again, this is a setting about personalization-- no one is tracking your every footstep 112 P age

Geofencing A geofence is a boundary around a place of interest, and apps can use your location to see if you're crossing in and out of one. To stop apps from using your location for geofencing, turn off location for those apps, None of your apps are currently using geofencing. 113 P age

You can also toggle for specific apps including pre-installed apps designed by Microsoft and apps you have installed to replace them. If you purchased this device from a system builder like Dell, Acer, Toshiba, or Lenovo, they may have some pre-installed apps as well. A Windows 10 app gets camera permissions by default if it wants it; regardless of how likely it is to use it, so it is recommended to check these settings periodically if you're leaving your webcam enabled. Generally, you should only give webcam access when you know you'll use them in that app, such as in Skype or HipChat. Note that disabling your webcam in Settings may not prevent malware from secretly re-enabling it, and it won't have an effect on other operating systems that you may be dual-booting. You might want to put a piece of black tape over your webcam lens when you're not using it. Choose apps that can use your camera Some apps need access to your camera to work as intended. 118 General Location Camera Microphone Speech, inking, & typing Account info Contacts Calendar Call history Messaging Radios Other devices Feedback & diagnostics Background apps Getting to know you Windows and Cortana can get to know your voice and writing to make better suggestions for you. We'll collect info like contacts, recent calendar events, speech and handwriting patterns, and typing history. Turning this off also turns off dictation and Cortana and clears what this device knows about you. Cortana is Microsoft's digital assistant program. Like Apple's digital assistant Siri, Cortana responds to natural language and can perform a variety of organizational tasks for the end user, including setting reminders, scheduling calendar events, calculating math problems and converting measurements and money. End users can manage what information Cortana can access. If the user does not want to use the digital assistant, the program can be turned off. Cortana saves user preferences in a storage area called Notebook. Because Cortana's memory is nonvolatile, user preferences the program gathers are available if and when the user decides to turn Cortana back on later. On Windows smartphones, Cortana can initiate phone calls, send and read text messages and answer questions using the Bing search engine. Users can launch Cortana by tapping the Cortana app or the search icon. An active listening feature also allows the user to simply say, "Hey Cortana" to launch the program without touching the phone. On Windows 10 desktops, Cortana can open programs, find files, and read or send messages. Users can either type a request to Cortana or turn on the microphone and speak to the program. Cortana integrates with Microsoft's new Web browser, Microsoft Edge, as well as Internet Explorer (IE). Microsoft delivers Cortana's updates independently from Windows 10 operating system updates so Cortana can receive updates more frequently. Cortana has an application programming interface (API) and can work with a variety of Universal Windows apps, as well as third-party apps such as Facebook and Twitter. Administrators can also use the API to customize line of business (LoB) or proprietary in-house apps to interact with Cortana. Cortana, which was originally developed for Windows Phone 8.1, is named after a female artificial intelligence (AI) character in Microsoft's Halo video game series. The speech section is where you toggle Cortana's speech recognition, among other things. Cortana is like Apple's Siri, but it works on the desktop as well as on mobile devices. You can use speech recognition to dictate a text message to send to someone in your contacts list. Enabling the speech setting also improves handwriting recognition and search suggestions that are made as you type. As the system learns more about you, it will better anticipate what your next words or commands will be. If you prefer to have your devices misinterpret what you say so you have to keep repeating yourself to get the right response, by all means turn this setting off. If you don't want to use Cortana, just leave the setting in the don t get to know me position. 118 P age

Feedback & Diagnostics helps Microsoft improve how Windows 10 works. The feedback function controls a small notification bubble that sometimes pops up in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, asking you to rate a particular program or function in Windows 10. Unfortunately, Microsoft has tied diagnostic and usage data together, but you can still limit sharing to basic error info by going with the Basic option. The Enhanced setting sends Microsoft info about often and how long you use certain apps but also gives the company more diagnostic info for troubleshooting and for developing system updates. The Full setting may send Microsoft personally identifiable information, such as the contents of a document you were working on when you experienced a crash. Microsoft states that it will not use this info "to identify, contact, or target advertising to you," but the potential privacy breach is pretty serious, so we recommend not using the Full setting, even though it sends a large amount of diagnostic info that helps Microsoft improve its apps and system updates Choices are: Automatically (Recommended), Always, Once a Day, Once a Week, or Never. Select that, close the app, and you re done with Microsoft s feedback requests. 2. How to Set Internet Explorer as Default Browser on Windows 10 Open Start Menu and click Settings. Open System from the available options. Now, Open Default Apps and scroll down to Web Browser selection. By Default, it should show Microsoft Edge (If you have not changed it to Google Chrome or Firefox upon installing them). Tab Microsoft Edge and you ll get a choice of choosing Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, or other browsers if you have installed them like Google Chrome or Firefox. Select Internet Explorer. That s it you re done. 3. How to Open Images in Default Photo Viewer of Windows 10 By Trouble Fixers Since upgrading to Windows 10, you ll not find the default Photo Viewer which we used to have in Windows 7 or Windows 8. Usually now, it ll give you option to open images in metro apps of windows like Photos, Paint or even GIMP if you have that installed. But since you ve upgraded, you still have that default Photo Viewer of Windows 8 in your PC, but it s not linked to images of any format anymore. So, in order to get the images to open in default Photo Viewer of Windows, here s what you need to do: 146 P age

Solution 1 In order to get the Photo viewer working, you need to get the.dll of photo viewer running as rundll32, and not to redirect Windows Photo Viewer to its original.dll file. So, copy following text and paste it in a notepad file: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open] "MuiVerb"="@photoviewer.dll,-3043" 00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,72,00,75,00,\ 6e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,00,22,00,25,\ 00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,\ 25,00,5c,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,20,00,50,00,68,00,6f,\ 00,74,00,6f,00,20,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,65,00,72,00,5c,00,50,00,68,00,\ 6f,00,74,00,6f,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,\ 00,22,00,2c,00,20,00,49,00,6d,00,61,00,67,00,65,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,\ 5f,00,46,00,75,00,6c,00,6c,00,73,00,63,00,72,00,65,00,65,00,6e,00,20,00,25,\ 00,31,00,00,00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget] "Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D A}" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\print] 00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,72,00,75,00,\ 6e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65,00,20,00,22,00,25,\ 00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,\ 25,00,5c,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,20,00,50,00,68,00,6f,\ 00,74,00,6f,00,20,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,65,00,72,00,5c,00,50,00,68,00,\ 6f,00,74,00,6f,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,\ 00,22,00,2c,00,20,00,49,00,6d,00,61,00,67,00,65,00,56,00,69,00,65,00,77,00,\ 5f,00,46,00,75,00,6c,00,6c,00,73,00,63,00,72,00,65,00,65,00,6e,00,20,00,25,\ 00,31,00,00, P age

How to Open Snipping Tool in Windows 10 Plus Tips and Tricks By Trouble Fixers Usually opening Snipping tool is just a search away in Start Menu of Windows 8 or 10. But in new laptops/notebooks with SSD where Windows 10 indexing service is disabled by default, searching Snipping tool doesn t come out with appropriate result. If you have a SSD in your laptop, do check if Windows Indexing Service is turned OFF or it s working. To prolong life of SSD in your laptop turns out to be only reasons for turning OFF Windows Indexing Service in Windows 10. How to Open Snipping Tool in Windows 10 Plus Tips and Tricks So, in order to restore faith in Windows 10 search, you need to enable Windows indexing service. To do so: Open Control Panel > Indexing Options Click Advanced Button, then in Advanced Options > Click Rebuild. 150 P age

Rebuilding of Index can take days. But to open Snipping Tool instantaneously, following are the methods: Way 1 Open Start Menu > Navigate to > All Apps > Windows Accessories > Snipping Tool Way 2 Open Run Command box by pressing Windows key + R. 152 Way 3 Create a shortcut on desktop with this path: C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe Way 4 Open Run Command box by pressing Windows key + R. Type in: snippingtool and Enter. Snipping Tool Tips and Tricks in Windows 10 Delayed Screenshot Mode Previously in Windows 7 or 8, there was no way that you could take a screenshot involving mouse movements. The only way to capture pop-up menus and tooltips was through PrintScreen command by pressing PrtScn button or combination of Alt+PrtScn on keyboard. And pasting the copied content on paint for further processing like cropping, scaling and saving. But, with Windows 10, Microsoft has included a new feature called Time-delay Shutter option. This option lets you take cropped or uncropped screenshots of pop-up menus or tooltips which were not possible before. Here s how you can use Delay option in Snipping tool: Open Snipping Tool Click Delay and select any delay time in seconds. Currently you ll have choice to choose between 0 to 5 seconds. Default delay time is 0 seconds. Chose any delay time, select New > Rectangular Snip and open any pop-up menu you want to take screenshot of. Now select any type of Snip you want i.e. New > (free-from, rectangular, windows or full screen). FREE-FORM: IT LETS YOU DRAW ANY RANDOM SHAPE ON SCREEN AND CAPTURES THE SCREEN IN SAME SHAPE. 152 P age

RECTANGULAR SNIP: THIS ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE A RECTANGULAR SNIP, CREATED AROUND BY DRAGGING THE MOUSE OVER ANY AREA. WINDOWS SNIP: THIS OPTION LETS YOU TAKE A FULL SCREENSHOT OF ANY OBJECT YOU HAVE OPENED LIKE ANY BROWSER, DIALOG BOX, AND ANY FILE EXPLORER WINDOWS ETC. FULL SCREEN SNIP: UPON SELECTING THIS OPTION, AS SOON AS YOU CLICK NEW, IT LL TAKE SCREENSHOT OF WHOLE SCREEN AND PRESENT IT TO YOU FOR FURTHER EDITING. Now, you ll have your selected delayed time to open any window, or pop-up menu or hovering your mouse to capture any tooltip. As soon as delay time is over, Snipping tool takes the snapshot of full screen and activate the Snip tool you selected. Now, you cut the screenshot the way you wanted, or if you have selected full screen, then by now, it ll be available to you for further editing. Open Snipping Tool with a HotKey Since many people in industry require taking screenshot frequently, hence having a shortcut to open such tools comes handy. Although you can create a shortcut on desktop for that or could pin it to Start menu, yet these requires you to move your mouse or minimizing your Window. Hence, creating a hotkey shortcut is the best option for opening such tool. For doing so: Right click on Snipping Tool in Start menu. Select Properties > Shortcut Tab 153 P age

Click on Shortcut Key space row. Press any combination of Key to set the Hotkey. Don t select just a single keystroke as in most laptops; every Function key is already binded with some options. Hence you can set Alt+F(1-12) except F1 or F4. Or you can also combine Ctrl+Alt+F(1-12). Directly save a Screenshot Without Using Snipping Tool 154 P age

To directly save a screenshot of current scene on your computer folder in Pictures folder, press Windows key + PrtScn key. Disable White Overlay When Taking Screenshots As soon as you click New Screenshot on Snipping Tool, it creates a white overlay screen to create an effect of cut-through of your selection. However this effect is not comfortable for many. Hence, you can disable White Overlay setting in Snipping Tool by opening Options in the tool and uncheck Show Screen Overlay when Snipping Tool is active. Share a Snip You can share the captured snip directly from Snipping tool via by clicking the button on the tool. You can choose the screenshot to be sent as inline content or as an 155 Page

attachment from the dropdown menu. And upon selecting the option, it ll open for you the default client. 158 Windows 10: The first 5 things you need to do immediately after you install it By Zach Epstein on Jul 30, 2015 at 9:30 AM Windows users, it s time to breathe a collective sigh of relief. After what seemed like an eternity trapped in the clutches of Windows 8, Microsoft s latest and greatest operating system is finally here to save us. Tech bloggers the world over have sung Windows 10 praise. Is it really that great, or is it just that anything is better than the nightmare that was Windows 8? Who cares? Install it right now and you ll never have to deal with Windows 8 again. In a recent post, we told you how to skip the queue and install Windows 10 right now. Your job isn t done once you ve got it installed, however, because there are a few things you need to make sure you take care of right away. DON T MISS: 5 awful Windows 8 problems that are fixed in Windows 10 Kill Wi-Fi sharing By default, Windows 10 is set up to share your Internet connection over Wi-Fi. This is a nifty feature if you want it and a dangerous one if you don t. To be on the safe side, you should probably just disable it right from the get-go. Open the Settings app from the taskbar or Start Menu, then open Change Wi-Fi settings and click Manage Wi-Fi settings. Now, uncheck all the boxes under For networks I select, share them with. You may also want to slide the toggles to off underneath Connect to suggested open hotspots and Connect to networks shared by my contacts. Customize the Start Menu Ahhhhhhhhhhh! The Start Menu is back! It s OK, you can get excited. We won t judge. Once you get past the simple fact that the Start Menu is there, however, it s time to begin making the most of it. We published a big post on Wednesday about customizing the Start Menu, and we highly suggest that you check it out. In it, you ll learn how to add and remove tiles, how to enable and disable live tiles, how to resize the entire Start Menu and how to change its appearance. 158 Page

Manage restarts I switched from Windows to OS X as my primary desktop operating system eight or nine years ago, though I still used both for a while. Now, the only regular interaction I have with Windows (aside from testing it for BGR) is when friends and family call me for help because something is broken. This happens all the time. As great as Windows 10 is compared to Windows 8, I don t expect these calls to end anytime soon. And of course, four out of every five frantic calls I get are resolved with the same fix: A restart. People when something goes wrong with your computer, restarting is the first thing you should try. In fact, you should be restarting your computer regularly if you don t shut it down each night. That said, automatic restarts after software updates that are unexpected can be very annoying. So here s an important setting to tweak: In the Advanced update section within Settings, select Advanced Windows Update options. Then, in the drop-down menu at the top, choose Notify to schedule restart. This way, your computer will still restart regularly whenever updates are installed, but you ll get a warning first. Meet the Action Center Microsoft s spin on Apple s Notification Center is called the Action Center. It might not be the most original feature in the world, but it s quite useful and we listed it among the five best fixes for annoying problems in Windows 8. Live tiles are nifty, but having one location for all of your notifications is a welcome change. Seriously, get to know the new Action Center. Don t let notifications own you As great as the new Action Center is, however, think of it like an iphone. If you give every app carte blanche access to notifications, you ll lose your mind. Instead, you want to analyze things on a per-app basis and choose which apps can pop up notifications and which should stay quiet. In Windows 10, you can adjust notifications settings by clicking the notifications icon in the system tray. The click All settings, followed by System and then Notifications & actions. Here, you ll be able to pick and choose which apps can display notifications and which ones cannot. You ll also be able to tweak a few additional settings pertaining to notifications. 159 P age

How to turn off Windows 10's keylogger Click Settings (it s on the Start menu s left pane) to open the Settings program. You ll find Privacy...ummm...hold on a sec...oh! There it is! on the very last row. Once in Privacy, go to the General section and Turn off Send Microsoft info about how I write to help us improve typing and writing in the future. While you re there, examine the other options and consider if there s anything else here that you may want to change Now go to the Speech, inking and typing section and click Stop getting to know me. (I really wanted to end that sentence with an exclamation point.) You may also want to explore other options in Privacy. For instance, you can control which apps get access to your camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar. I wish I had that capability in Android. 160 P age

How to create a local account in Windows 10 Your account > Sign in with a local account instead and follow the wizard. Go to Settings > Family & other users > Add someone else to this PC. You can t create a local account using Windows 10 s Your family account settings. On the next screen, click The person I want to add doesn t have an address. Now, Microsoft will take you to a screen where you can create a Microsoft account with Windows 10. We don t want to use that, of course so we ll choose the option at the very bottom of the screen that says Add a user without a Microsoft account. Now we re getting somewhere. All you have to do on this screen is enter a user name, a password (twice), password hint, and then click Next. 161 P age

How to Disable the Windows 10 Lock Screen Brian Burgess October 9, 2015 in How-To Recently we ve been covering topics related to the sign in process for Windows 10. One of the things Windows 10 includes in that process is the lock screen, which is a mobile-style feature. It s nice to have it on a Surface Pro or tablets running the new OS. However, with a laptop or traditional desktop, it s just an extra layer of the login experience that you might want to disable. There are a few different ways to go about killing the lock screen, but it will depend on which version of Windows 10 you re running. Here s how to do it in both versions. Disable Lock Screen Windows 10 Pro If you re running the Pro version of Windows 10, you can use group policy editor to turn it off. To do that hit the keyboard shortcut Windows Key+R to bring up the Run dialog and type: gpedit.msc and then Enter. Now head to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization and select Do not display the lock screen. 162 P age

Now change Not Configured to Enabled and click OK and close out of group policy editor. That s it! The next time you restart your system, you ll no longer need to deal with the lock screen. 163 P age

Disable Lock Screen Windows 10 Home The Windows 10 Home version doesn t include advanced admin tools like group policy editor. However, you can still disable the lock screen with a registry hack. Important: Making changes to the registry is for experienced users and not for the faint of heart. Before making any changes, create a Restore Point or a backup of the registry first! First hit Windows Key+R to bring up the Run dialog and type: regedit and hit Enter. Head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization. If you don t have the Personalization key, you ll need to create it. 164 P age

Right-click the right pane and create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it NoLockScreen. 165 P age

Now double-click the NoLockScreen value and give it a data value of 1. Then click OK and close out of Registry Editor. That s it! Restart your computer and the lock screen will be disabled, and go directly to the login screen. It s also worth mentioning that if you set your Windows 10 PC to log in automatically, it will disable the lock screen as well 166 P age

Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10 Applies to Windows 10 Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. It can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC. For example, if the problem doesn't happen in safe mode, you'll know default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. There are two versions of safe mode: Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. They're quite similar, but Safe Mode with Networking includes the network drivers and services you'll need to access the Internet and other computers on your network. The following sections describe how to start your PC in safe mode. Hide all From Settings 1. Press Windows logo key +I on your keyboard to open Settings. If that doesn't work, select the Start button in the lower-left corner of your screen, then select Settings. 2. Select Update & security > Recovery. 3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. 4. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. 5. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. From the sign-in screen 1. Restart your PC. When you get to the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down while you select Power > Restart. 2. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. 3. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. 167 P age

How can I clean up the notifications area on the Windows 10 taskbar? by Brien Posey It's easy for the Windows 10 taskbar to become a convoluted mess of various symbols, alerts and notifications. Although many of these items do have a purpose, you can reduce the volume of help desk calls by disabling the various Windows notifications. After all, some users will inevitably call the help desk anytime they see something they don't immediately recognize, even if the item is purely informational. How you clean up the taskbar and the notification area varies depending on which items you want to remove. You can remove notification icons and leave the other icons in place, or remove everything from the system tray, including the clock. To make changes, right-click the left-most symbol -- which resembles an up arrow -- and choose the Properties command from the shortcut menu. This will open the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties sheet. Now click on the Customize button located in the Notification Area section or (left click on start and then click on Settings then click on System then click on Notifications & actions). The resulting screen contains lots of on/off sliders you can use to enable or disable various system settings and notifications. It's easy to disable notifications while presenting, for example, or turn off the option to show tips about Windows. In this screen you can also enable or disable notifications on a per-app basis. For instance, you might turn off notifications for Mail, News or Outlook. The Notifications & Actions screen also contains a link you can use to select which icons appear on the taskbar. You can use this option to hide anything that is likely to confuse users or result in help desk calls. Similarly, there is a link you can use to turn system icons on or off. You can also disable the Action Center, the network icon, the clock and more. 168 P age
