Identify the basic components of the Windows user interface. Work with the Windows user interface within programs. Manage files and folders in Microsoft Windows Explorer. Perform basic file operations.

5 Functions of an Operating System An operating system controls how programs work with each other and how they interact with the computer hardware. creates the file system that determines how your data is stored within a storage device.

6 GUI Operating system such as Windows XP and Windows Vista provides a GUI that makes it easier for you to give instructions to a computer. Windows Vista Windows XP

7 Functions of an Operating System Provides a user interface which is the way a program presents itself to a user. Many operating systems provide visual elements, such as icons and menus, to help you interact with a computer. A mouse to select icons and issue commands. Example: double clicking a file to open it

8 An active window is an example of a user interface User Interface

9 Functions of an Operating System Provides utilities to configure your system Utilities are small programs that help you perform specific functions, such as connecting to a network, managing resources, and adding new programs to your computer.

11 Functions of an Operating System Helps manage computer resources Programs communicate with the operating system to work with the required hardware, such as the CPU, to complete required tasks such as printing and saving documents.

12 Functions of an Operating System Helps secure data by controlling user access to a computer It helps you specify authentication and authorization rights to control access to your computer and its resources.

13 Authentication The operating system uses a process called authentication to confirm or validate logon information. If a user wants to control the access rights to their computer they can specify a user name and password to log on to the computer.

14 Authentication Authentication the use of user names and passwords to limit access to a computer system

15 Authorization Authorization is the process by which the user can associate specific permissions to each username. Administrator has rights to do everything Bob cannot print because he uses all of Mom s ink Jennifer cannot install programs Steve is not allowed to delete any files because he is only 2 years old

22 Icons An icon is a small picture or symbol on a graphical user interface (GUI) that represents a program (or command), file, directory (also called a folder) or device (such as a hard disk or floppy).

36 Menu Bar o o A menu bar is a rectangular bar, usually at the top, in which you can select menus. These menus contain many commands to perform various functions in a program 36

37 Toolbar o o A toolbar can be a horizontal or vertical block of on-screen buttons or icons. You can click these buttons or icons to give commands to the program. 37

40 Files and Folders A file is an electronic document, which can be a WORD document(.doc), a spreadsheet file (.xls), a MP3 file (.mp3) or a picture file (.jpeg). A folder is a container (directory) for programs and files in GUI interfaces. It is used to organize files or other folders.

41 Windows Explorer the program you use to help you find saved files.

42 WINDOWS EXPLORER The Windows Explorer window is often divided into two sections, called panes. The pane on the left side Folders pane, displays the structure of drives and folders on your computer. The pane on the right details pane, displays the contents of a drive or folder.

49 File Formats Every file has a format that defines the way data is stored. The format is identified by a period added to a file name, followed by 3 or 4 letters. Word documents -.docx or.doc Images -.gif or.jpg Executable programs -.exe Multimedia files -.wma,.mp3

50 Cut and Paste When you cut or copy text or any object from a document it is saved on the Clipboard until you paste it in another location. Cut text or images moved from location to another Copy text or images are copied from one location to another
