Seniors Online Sponsored by the Docents and Staff of the Ross-University Hills Library 4310 East Amherst at Birch Rose Keating - Tech For All 1709 South Acoma Denver, CO home MISSION Tech for All makes available to individuals in the community the means to become skilled and competent in computer use; to gather donations, collect and recondition used equipment, identify qualified recipients and place the appropriate equipment with them solely for their use and at no charge. 1
Senior Internet Program Pioneers Senior Internet classes started at the Ross University Hills Library thanks to the pioneering efforts of the University Hills Staff and Docents. Funds received from a grant through the Library Service and Construction Act (administered through the Colorado State Library) allowed Linda Metcalf and Kate Lawrence to design a program and training materials specifically geared toward teaching seniors how to use the Internet. In 1999 the Docents assumed the responsibility of this enormously successful program and are now in their seventh year at the Ross-University Hills Library. 2

The number of PCs varies according to the size of the library. Will I have to wait to use the internet in the library? There are time restrictions. The PCs with internet access are used heavily during certain hours of the day (after school) and on weekends. If you are unable to find an available PC, a librarian may be able to help you. Is there a charge to use the Internet at the library? There are no charges to view information on the internet. If you wish to print information, it costs 10 cents per page. Are there any restrictions in using the library s PC s and Internet? The Denver Public Library does not provide the following services: (correspondence between two or more people), chat lines and bookmarks. 5
Internet Access From Your Home You need to have: Computer PC or Mac / Netbook Modem Allows your computer to send and receive data over the telephone line. DSL / Broadband will require a special modem the provider for the service you choose can talk to you about their requirements and charges. Most new computers come with built-in dial up modems. You may connect your computer to your current telephone line. Internet Service Provider (ISP) Internet service providers connect you to the Internet for a monthly fee. Examples of these are the major telephone companies, Microsoft, America Online (AOL), as well as several local companies (see the Yellow Pages). Internet Browser: A browser is a software program that allows you to navigate ( surf ) the Internet. Internet Service Providers give you the browser free-ofcharge when you sign up for the service. Denver Public Library s Web address is: 6
The following information about the keyboard and mouse apply to all applications used with the computer. COMPUTER KEYBOARD Esc key (Escape key) May reverse the action of some other key Terminates dialog boxes F1 - F12 keys (Function keys) F1 - Usually activates a Help program Backspace key Backspace key deletes the character to the left of the cursor (different from the Delete key) Tab Key When typing a document, it acts like a typewriter tab key and moves the cursor to the next tab stop. When used in filling out forms it moves the cursor to the next field on the form. 7
Shift Tab When typing a document, it modifies or reversed the action caused by the tab key. When used in filling out forms it moves the cursor to the previous field on the form Ctrl key (Control key) Always used simultaneously with some other key or keys. When Ctrl is pressed and held down, it changes the meaning of the next key or keys pressed. It usually makes the action taken by the next key somehow "bigger". For example, pressing the Right Arrow key moves the cursor one SPACE to the right. Pressing Ctrl and Right Arrow moves the cursor one WORD to the right. Alt key (Alternate key) Always used simultaneously with some other key or keys. When Alt is pressed and held down, it changes the meaning of the next key or keys pressed. Enter key (usually has a bent arrow pointing to the left) causes the current action to execute. Starts a new paragraph in a word processing program. Insert key (sometime abbreviated Ins) Pressing the insert key turns the Insert Mode on or off. When the insert mode is on, as you press keys, the character inserts itself at the position of the cursor, pushing other following characters to the right. When the Insert mode is off, as you press keys, the character is placed at the position of the cursor, but replaces or overwrites the character to the right of the cursor. Home key Moves the cursor to the left end of the current line <Ctrl> <Home> sends the cursor to the beginning of the document Page Up key Moves the cursor up one page or one screen Page Down key Moves the cursor down one page or one screen Delete key (sometimes abbreviated Del) Delete key deletes the character to the right of the cursor (Different from the Backspace Key ) 8
End key Moves the cursor to the end of the current line <Ctrl> <End> moves the cursor to the end of the document Arrow keys: pointing up, down, right, left Move the cursor up one line, down one line, right one character, or left one character respectively <Ctrl><up arrow> moves cursor up one paragraph <Ctrl><down arrow> moves cursor down one paragraph <Ctrl><left arrow> moves cursor left one word <Ctrl><right arrow> moves cursor right one word Num Lock key If Num Lock is "On", pressing it turns it "Off" When Num Lock is "On", the numeric keypad acts like a calculator keypad for entering numbers. If Num Lock is "Off", pressing it turns it "On". When Num Lock is "Off", the numeric keypad Home, up arrow, Pg Up, and other cursor control functions are active 9
THE MOUSE What is a Mouse? The MOUSE allows you to move the cursor on the computer s monitor. How do I use a Mouse? The MOUSE has 2 clickers. For Internet, use only the left clicker. When do I use the Mouse? As you move the Mouse, the arrow on the screen will show your location. When you move the MOUSE, the arrow turns into a hand when you come to a place where there is more information (link, colored, underlined hypertext). When the hand appears, click once quickly. Do not hold down the clicker. Now you are on another webpage and possibly in a different Web site. Use the left clicker on the mouse to scroll (to move up and down) document pages. Hold down the clicker and point the cursor (arrow) at the gray bar on the right side of the screen. The arrow will not turn into a hand. Keyboard keys also may be used to scroll up and down a page. Use the mouse to click on tool bar buttons. Use the mouse on your home computer to transfer Internet text to your word processing program. Notice the arrow will turn into an I to indicate this possibility. Special Note: The right clicker on the mouse is useful for advanced applications. If you accidentally touch the right clicker, a variety of menus may appear on the screen. Move the mouse cursor to a blank portion on the screen. Click the left clicker to remove the menu. 10
INTERNET BROWSER The Main Explorer Toolbar The main toolbar is composed of eleven different buttons. Each of these buttons has a different function and purpose in Internet Explorer. The individual buttons will each be discussed in the following sections. 1. The Back Button: This button will take you back to whatever document you were previously viewing. Pressing it immediately takes you back one document. If you have browsed many pages, or are well into a multi-page document, pressing it repeatedly will continue to back you up one page at a time. Once you reach your starting location, it will be grayed-out and unavailable. 2. The Forward Button: This button will take you forward to the next document if you have previously browsed multiple documents and had then backed-up to the page you are currently viewing. (If you have not backed up at all, the forward button will be grayedout) Pressing it repeatedly will continue to move you forward one page at a time. You can move forward until you reach the last page that you had browsed, at which time the forward button will be grayed-out. 3. The Stop Button: The stop button stops ANY current operations by Internet Explorer. It will stop any type of file from loading. It can also be used to stop animations from continuing once a page is loaded. If you press it before a page has finished loading, the page will display everything it had finished loading before the stop button was pressed. If a document is completely loaded and there are no animations, movies, or other files still running, the stop button will have no immediate function. 4. The Refresh Button: This button will reload the current document that you are viewing. It is useful if the page updates very frequently so that you can view these changes as soon as they are available. If you are loading a document and the transfer was interrupted, you can reload the full document again by clicking here. 5. The Home Button: This button will return you to the page you have selected as the default start-up page for Internet Explorer. It will not take you back to the beginning of your web browsing, it will just return you to your home location from where you are. If you press back after reaching your home page, you will go back to the page you left after you hit the Home button. 6. The Search Button: This button will take you to the page you have selected as the default Web search page for Internet Explorer. If you have not selected a page it will take you to Microsoft's default search page. 11
7. The Favorites Button: This button will open up the Favorites menu. You can choose a favorite that you wish to go to from the list, add a favorite to the list, or organize your favorites from this menu. 8. The Print Button: The print button will bring up a Print dialog box. In the box you can decide if you would like to print the contents of the page you are viewing, how many pages you will print, and also how many copies you will print. Keep in mind that if you try to print a page that is graphics intensive, you will need a printer that is capable of printing graphics. Also, the more graphics and pages a Web site has, the longer it will take to print. 9. The Font Button: Pressing this button causes Internet Explorer to cycle through the available font sizes. This button is useful if the text is too small to read, or too large to fit comfortably in the window. 10. The Mail Button: This button will open into a drop down menu from which you can select to read or send . You can also open up your newsgroups from this menu. The Edit Button: This button will ONLY be on your toolbar if you have a Windows system Web editor (such as Microsoft FrontPage or Microsoft Word) installed on your computer. If you press this button, it will launch that editor and open the document you are currently viewing in it. 12
SURF!! Three Ways To Move Around On The World Wide Web 1. Type a SEARCH topic in the search box on the browser (make sure the cursor is blinking) 2. Left Click on a colored, underlined hyperlink LINK. 3. Type an Internet Web ADDRESS in the address bar(also know as the location bar). The "other" way is to already have your favorites in a list so you can just choose your next website by clicking on the link you want. 13
