Table of Contents Log On to the Network... 1 Windows XP Security Features... 3 Change Your Network Password... 5 Install Network Printers... 6 My Documents... 8 Microsoft Outlook (Setup)... 9 Staff Resources ( 12 (web access) Maintenance Technology (work orders) Teacher Workroom... 15

Log On to the Network When you sit down at your computer you will see the following screen. Simultaneously click on the Ctrl-Alt-Delete buttons to get the log in screen. Click on the Options button to see what domain you are accessing. You can log in to either your computer or the FORT_OSAGE network. In order to be able to print to network printers and access information in My Documents, you need to select FORT_OSAGE in the Log on to: box. NOTE: You should not need to do this in the future. The computer will remember which domain you logged on to last. 1

Log On to the Network (continued) You now need to enter your User Name and Password. Your User Name should be your first initial and last name in all lower case (e.g. jdoe for John Doe). Click on OK. If this is the first time you have logged on at Fort Osage, your initial password will be password. You will be immediately prompted to change your password. Click OK. Type your new password in the New Password box and again in the Confirm New Password box. Click OK and you will be logged on to the network. 2

Windows XP Security Features After turning on or rebooting your computer, the login screen will appear. There is no way to get around this screen. A user must login with a user name and password. By hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL on the keyboard you can do five different functions: Lock Computer Log Off Shutdown Change Password Task Manager Cancel Lock Computer: Locking your computer will prevent any other user (besides the user logged in and an administrative user) from logging in. Any other user that attempts to login will receive a message saying that the computer is locked and only the current user or an admin user can login. Log Off: This option will log you out and allow another user to login. This will close all open applications. Shutdown: This gives you the option of preparing to power down the computer, restarting the computer, logging out the user, or putting the computer in stand-by/sleep mode. Change Password: This will allow you to change your network password. This should be done every 90 days. Task Manager: This application will show you how busy your computer is at that time. It will show processes that are running and/or hung up or not responding. You can end processes that are not responding by opening the Applications tab, highlighting the application that is having problems, and clicking on the End Now button at the bottom of the window. Cancel: This will cancel the Windows Security screen and return you to the application you were working on when you hit CTRL-ALT-DEL. 3

Windows XP Security Features (continued) When another user logs into your computer, a profile is created for that user. This profile contains information about the user including security settings, internet favorites, personal documents, desktop icons, etc. The profile settings are stored in a folder that can only be accessed by that user or an administrative user. Documents cannot be accessed by others users, therefore, they cannot be deleted or modified by any other user. To add important Desktop Icons 1. Right click on the Desktop 2. Click on Properties 3. Click on the Desktop tab 4. Click on the customize Desktop button 5. Select the (4) Desktop icons 6. Click the OK button and the Apply button (Icons will now appear on your desktop) To access or store information on a server follow the steps below 1. Click on the Start button 2. Click Run 3. Type \\printers 4. Click OK This will give you a list of servers that you can save and retrieve data from if your have appropriate permissions. If you do not have rights to the server, you will not be able to access the folders and data. Drag and drop to the desktop to create a shortcut to the server. Installing software on your machine is restricted. If it is licensed software that the Tech Center supports, someone from the department will come out to install the software. All requests for additional software that you might want to utilize for teaching will need to be approved through the Curriculum and Instruction department. Those forms are available in your building office. 4

Change Your Network Password Simultaneously push the Ctrl Alt Del keys to bring up the Windows Security screen. Click on the Change Password button. Enter your Old Password and your New Password in the respective boxes. Then retype your new password in the Confirm New Password box. Click OK. The following message appears to confirm the change of your password. Click OK. 5

Installing Network Printers 1. To setup a printer for the first time click on the START button and then click RUN. 2. The following window will open. Type \\printers in the Open box. 3. That will open up the print server on your computer. You will see a window like the one below. 6

Installing Network Printers (continued) The next step is to select the printer that you want to install onto your computer. For example purposes I will use the printer named FP_Office. Right click on the printer of your choice and select Connect from the menu. A box will popup like the one to the right. This box is indicating to you that it is trying to connect to that printer. Once this box disappears then your printer will be installed but it WILL NOT be your default printer. To change your default printer to the one you just added, click on the START button, and then click on Printers and Faxes. Right Click on the printer you want to be your default then select the Set as Default Printer option. You will see a little black circle with a white check indicating the default printer. 7

My Documents There is an icon on your desktop that is My Documents. When you save documents (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) they will be stored in this folder unless you point them somewhere else. For better security, the default should be left as the My Documents folder. Any files saved in the My Documents folder are actually stored on a server. The server is backed up on a regular basis. When you open/save a document from within the Microsoft application (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) you will have icons at the left of the open/save windows. Clicking on one of the icons will open up that location. If you want to open/save a document in/on your desktop click the Desktop icon and it will show all your icons on your desktop 8

Microsoft Outlook - Setup Before you can use Microsoft Outlook at school, for the first time, you must setup your client. Click on the START button ALL PROGRAMS MICROSOFT OFFICE MICROSOFT OFFICE OUTLOOK This will start the Startup Wizard. Click on Next and then select Yes to configure an account. Click Next again. Select Microsoft Exchange Server in the Server Type window and click on Next. 9

Microsoft Outlook Setup (continued) Enter EXCH.fortosage.net for the Microsoft Exchange Server and your username. Your username should be your first initial and last name. Then click on Check Name. If you have entered the correct information, the data you entered will change to match the information stored on the server. Click on Next. 10

Microsoft Outlook Setup (continued) You should then get the final screen in the setup process. Click on Finish. 11

Staff Resources There are many resources available to staff on the district website ( Left click on Staff resources then click the resources you want to access. (Web Access) To access your district from home or elsewhere go to Then left click on Staff Resources then left click . You will see a window like the one to the right. UserName You must type the domain, your username, and password like the example above. 12

(Web Access) Staff Resources (continued) The Security settings determine the amount of time before you are automatically logged off of the web system. o If you are on a Public computer you should select the Public or Shared Computer option as this will log you off the system more quickly. This provides more privacy and security. o If you are on your teacher computer or on a computer at home, you should select the Private Computer option. This will allow more time before you are logged off. Then click on the Log On button. Maintenance (For Administrators and Secretaries only) This web site is for the submission of work orders to the Fort Osage maintenance department. This site is for items that need work that are not technology related. You must submit your request to your building administrator or building secretary who will then submit the work order online. This site is not for staff use. 13

Staff Resources (continued) Technology (work orders) This web site is for submission and tracking of work orders relating to technology (e.g. computers, audio and visual equipment, etc.). To access technology work orders, go to Left click on Staff Resources then left click Technology. You will see a window like the one below. The first time you log in use newworkorderuser as the username and firsttime01 as the password. It will prompt you to create your own username and password. Once you are set up with a username and password, you will be able to enter work orders on the form shown to the right. 14

Teacher Workroom Staff Resources (continued) The teacher workroom is where digital copies of many forms and templates are stored. These forms and templates include, but are not limited to the UBD template, handbooks, ordering forms, web page information, professional development forms and human resource forms.
