If you are not logged onto a file server that is configured for a printer, the file server's name is followed by unknown queues. 32 Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) EN

Configuring a Printer in Remote Printer Mode (Bindery) You can configure a printer in remote printer mode on a NetWare 3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. Remote Printer mode requires a Novell NetWare print server, but allows implementation of forms and provides the best integration with NetWare print utilities (for example, PCONSOLE or NWADMIN). Using PSERVER.EXE, the print server consumes one user license for all printers. Using PSERVER.NLM, the print server does not consume any license slots. Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the following tasks have been performed: Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer and the printer is connected to a network. External print servers: The print server has power and is connected to the printer s parallel port and network. The printer is turned on, is online, and you have printed a JetDirect configuration page. If you have not printed an HP JetDirect configuration page from your printer, see the hardware installation guide for your print server or your printer's getting started guide for instructions. EN Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) 33

To Configure the Printer 1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges. 2. Run PCONSOLE and create or modify your selected print server. Configure a print server slot with Type Remote, Other Unknown (or Other Unknown in 4.x). Assign a print queue to the printer slot (printer number). Restart your print server at the server console by typing UNLOAD PSERVER and the name of your print server. Type LOAD PSERVER and the same print server name. 3. Click Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click HP JetAdmin. 4. To change an existing printer configuration, highlight the printer you want in the list of printers. If your printer does not appear in the list of available printers, select a refresh option from the Device Refresh pull-down menu. 5. Click Device on the menu bar at the top of the main window, then do one of the following: Click New to configure a new printer. - or - Click Modify to configure an existing printer. 34 Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) EN

6. If you are configuring a new printer, select the LAN hardware address of the HP JetDirect print server attached to the new printer, then click Configure. The address of the HP JetDirect print server is listed on the HP JetDirect configuration page. 7. Type the new name of the printer. This is the name that will appear on the network. 8. Type a general description of the printer such as the type of printer, options in the printer, and printer location. This description is optional. 9. Click Next. The NetWare screen will display. 10. Click Operation Mode, then select Remote Printer. 11. Select the print server s name in the Novell Print Server box. 12. Select the printer number (assigned in PCONSOLE in step 2) in the Printer Number box. 13. Click Queues. To add or remove queues from the list, click Change, add or remove queues for the printer, then click OK. At least one queue must appear in the list of Queues Serviced. 14. If desired, click Notification to view the users or groups to be notified of problems with this printer. Click Next. The TCP/IP screen is displayed. Changing the TCP/IP settings is optional. When completed, click Next. 15. Click Finish. When asked to save the new device configuration, click OK. Then return to the HP JetAdmin Utility screen and verify that the new device was added. To verify the configuration, see the next section, Verifying the Configuration. EN Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) 35

Verifying the Configuration To verify the previous configuration steps, either configure a printer to print to the new Novell queue or insert a job into the queue using PCONSOLE. To insert a job into the Novell queue using PCONSOLE v 4.15 or greater, do the following: 1. Run PCONSOLE. 2. Select Print Queues. Press [Enter]. 3. In the Print Queues window, select the desired queue. Press [Enter]. 4. In the Print Queue Information window, select print jobs. Press [Enter]. The Print Job window appears with the title bar. 5. Press the [Insert] key on the keyboard. The select directory from which to print window appears with the file server and directory already in the window. 6. Press the [Backspace] key to remove the current file server and directory, making the line blank. Re-enter c:\ only and press [Enter]. 7. The available files window appears. Use the arrow keys to select a file (for example, autoexec.bat.) Press [Enter]. 8. The Print Job Configurations window appears with Defaults highlighted. Press [Enter]. 9. The New Print Job to be Submitted window appears. Leave the defaults and press F10 to save changes. The print job window appears with the file (for example, autoexec.bat) in it. 36 Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) EN

The Status of the job is ready; it changes to active after the printer warms up. After the job is printed the job line disappears. This procedure tests the ability of the HP JetDirect print server to service the Novell queue. It also bypasses the Novell client software as well as the Windows printer driver and the Windows operating system. If the file prints by inserting it into the queue, then the HP JetDirect print server is working properly. Job Details Job Details enables you to view and delete your own print jobs and provides information on the status of your print jobs in the queue. With HP JetAdmin (version 3.3 or above), Job Details includes the following information: Document name Status (printing, spooling, etc.) Owner Progress of print jobs (in MB) Time print job was started To Access Job Details from HP JetAdmin 1. Highlight the appropriate printer in the list of printers. 2. Click Device on the menu bar. 3. Click Jobs. EN Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) 37

To Access Job Details from Windows 9X and NT/ Using the right mouse button, click the appropriate printer icon in the Taskbar. 2. Click Jobs. Additional status information is available for certain HP printers by double-clicking on the appropriate printer icon in the Taskbar in Windows 9x and NT/ Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client) EN

4 Microsoft Windows 95/98 Networks (Peer-to-Peer) Introduction This chapter explains how to install and configure the HP JetAdmin software (version 3.3 and above) for use with peer-to-peer Windows 95/98 networks. (Windows 98 requires HP JetAdmin version 3.3 and above.) The following components are discussed in this chapter: HP Desktop Status Peer-to-peer printing HP JetAdmin software The HP JetAdmin software described in this chapter covers HP JetAdmin management for Windows 95/98 peer-to-peer networks. To learn about installing and configuring the HP JetAdmin software as a Windows 95/98 client on a Novell NetWare network, see the chapter Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client). EN 39

HP Desktop Status HP Desktop Status provides printer information to users and administrators. Printer information includes printer status, capabilities, and diagnostic information about the HP JetDirect print server. HP Desktop Status is accessed through a Taskbar icon that is automatically added to the desktop when a new printer that uses HP JetDirect Port is added to the Printers folder. The HP Desktop Status icons change color (green, yellow, red) to represent the HP JetDirect print server's current status. Peer-to-Peer With the HP JetAdmin for Windows 95/98 software, users on a peer-to-peer configured network (also known as direct mode) who want access to the network printer can add the network printer to their systems and use the printer as if it was their own. This capability is provided by HP JetAdmin s Direct Mode. If you are running clients on Novell NetWare, see the chapter Novell NetWare Networks (Windows 9x & NT/2000 Client). If you are using your printer for both Direct Mode and NetWare Server Mode, use the same print server name for both systems. Otherwise, the NetWare connection to the printer will be lost. 40 Microsoft Windows 95/98 Networks (Peer-to-Peer) EN

Installing the HP JetAdmin Software If the HP JetAdmin software was included on your printer s CD-ROM, see your printer documentation for installation instructions. If you are installing from the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, use the following installation instructions. Three installation options are available: Network Printing installs the HP JetDirect Port Monitor software. Network Printing and Status installs the HP JetDirect Port Monitor and Desktop Status software. Network Printing & Management installs HP JetAdmin, HP JetDirect Port Monitor, and Desktop Status software. 1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Use Windows Explorer to browse the CD. Locate Setup.exe in the following subdirectory: Jetadmin/Win95_98/<XX>/Disk1 where <XX> is a language in which HP JetAdmin is provided. 3. Run Setup.exe and follow the instructions on the screen. EN Microsoft Windows 95/98 Networks (Peer-to-Peer) 41

Once installed, the HP JetAdmin icon appears in the HP JetAdmin Utility Program Folder in the Windows Start menu. If you are installing the HP JetAdmin software from a source other than the HP JetDirect CD-ROM, see the HP JetAdmin README file that accompanies the software for installation instructions. To obtain the latest version of the HP JetAdmin software, see HP Customer Care Online ( Configuring a Printer You can use HP JetAdmin to configure a printer that was not automatically configured during the CD-ROM software installation.
