5 VMware ESXi 5.0 U2 HDD and Flash NOTE: Fr a cmplete list f supprted Dell PwerEdge systems and supprted perating systems, see the smatrix.html available at OMDVD\html\en\platfrm\smatrix in the Dell Systems Management Tls and Dcumentatin DVD. Imprtant Ntes General Ntes fr Operating Systems Fr perating systems such as ESX and Windws 2008 Server, where the installatin is nt fully autmated, the native Graphical User Installatin tl f the perating system installatin media is used. Hence, setting date and time zne in the SBUU setup page is nt applied. The date and time must be set manually after the perating system is installed. T use the RAID cnfiguratin feature f SBUU t cnfigure RAID and install the perating system, the Fast Initializatin parameter f the RAID cntrller must be set t ON. This setting is the factry default fr all RAID cntrllers. D nt insert r remve any ht-swappable drives until the perating system is cmpletely installed using SBUU. The results may be unpredictable and the installatin may fail. Replicatin is supprted n systems with multiple cntrllers, prvided the cntrllers are in an initialized state. It is applicable t bth master and target systems. If yu cnfigure RAID manually and use SBUU t install an perating system n a master system, then manually cnfigure RAID n the target system as well. Use lcal accunts fr creating the SMB share n Windws n which the RPMs reside fr the netwrk dwnlad feature. SBUU des nt supprt the installatin f Tape r Fiber Channel drivers with the perating system installatin. Yu can dwnlad the drivers fr these devices frm the Dell Systems Service and Diagnstics Tls n the Dell Systems Management Tls and Dcumentatin DVD r frm the Dell supprt website at supprt.dell.cm. The Keybard Type lcale ptin ffered fr a keybard layut n the SBUU Hme page is nly fr the SBUU pages navigatin. The selected keybard layut setting is nt passed t the installed Operating System. In the Firmware Update page, if the user selects Refresh USB devices, the user must wait fr the devices t be listed, befre clicking any ther links n the page r a ppup appears infrming that n devices culd be fund,. USB keys frmatted with New Technlgy File System (NTFS) r File Allcatin Table (FAT16) are nt supprted. Any netwrk r Windws share r CD/DVD that can be used as an input t the Repsitry must nt cntain any file r flder that is nt part f the Server Update Utility (SUU) cntent. The selectins n Set the Date and Time page in SOI shws default values (nt the earlier selected values), when the user revisits the page by clicking Back r Edit. The user selected values are stred internally and can be applied t the specific system when the user pts t apply. The Advanced Mde allws yu t specify the size f the virtual disk. The specified value is used while creating RAID and cannt be validated against the existing disks n the system. The values cnfigured in the multi-sys-cnfig.csv file are applied nly during executin. Only the ptins that are shwn during cnfiguratin time are applied. Hwever, ptins that are nt shwn during cnfiguratin, but are part f multi-sys-cnfig.csv file are ignred. Nte: If there is any verlap in the settings between Cnfiguratin GUI and multi-sys-cnfig.csv file, then the settings in multi-sys-cnfig.csv file verride the changes made in the GUI. The installatin time fr different versins f the Windws Server 2008 perating system varies cnsiderably. It is because f the differences in the sftware and drivers utilized in different versins f

6 the Windws Server 2008 perating systems and the capabilities f the installatin platfrm. On the Installing Windws screen, the Cmpleting installatin step, where the drivers are installed, may take cnsiderable time t cmplete. If yu cnfigure the BIOS r idrac6 entry with Setup Passwrd Override checkbx under Pwer sectin, and then yu Exprt the cnfiguratins and Imprt the same cnfiguratin and View/Edit the imprted cnfiguratin, yu can see that the Setup Passwrd Override checkbx is nt selected. Uncertified array disks, if present in the system, are displayed in the SBUU RAID cnfiguratin GUI but are nt used while creating RAID using cnfiguratin scripts. The ptins shwn in SBUU fr BIOS tkens under Hardware Cnfiguratin screen are a superset. The default values d nt reflect the current status f the tkens. If the user selects an ptin, which is nt supprted in the current system, applying Hardware Scripts fail. User must select a value that is applicable n the current system. Any peratins thrugh Systems Build and Update Utility are nt allwed n systems with Nn-RAID cnfiguratins. FQDN feature is available n Dell PwerEdge 12G systems and later. On systems prir t 12G, prvide a valid IP address in the text bx. Ntes fr Windws Operating Systems Create an ptical media frm the Windws OS Install Supprt Pack and make it available fr SBUU, when prmpted. During Windws installatin, the system autmatically lgs in t finish the pst installatin tasks and then autmatically lgs ut. It is recmmended that yu d nt perfrm any task until the system has autmatically lgged ut. The installatin might end abnrmally if it is interrupted. If yu enable "Cnsle Redirectin": A dialg bx is displayed with the message that an Expanded Memry Supprt (EMS) cnnectin has been discvered during the perating system installatin. If the platfrm supprts Windws HPC 2008 r Windws HPC 2008 R2 editins, select Windws 2008 (64 bit) and Windws 2008 R2 (64 bit) respectively n the Cnfigure Server OS Installatin page, and use the apprpriate Windws media when prmpted. Ntes fr the Tl t Create Btable USB The fllwing cmmands/rpm shuld be installed fr the tl t wrk: udevinf,mtls,parted (minimum versin required is ), grub-install (grub) and lsusb. By default, the bt t hard disk ptin is cnfigured t bt t the secnd partitin f the first hard disk f primary cntrller master (hd0, 1). If the OS is installed in the ther disk r partitins the GRUB bt entry shuld be edited accrdingly. Check GRUB manual fr further details. Ntes fr Red Hat Enterprise Linux Operating Systems At least 14.1GB disk space is required t install Red Hat Enterprise Linux. If yu use the Dwnlad RPMs frm Netwrk feature, the RPMs are dwnladed t the partitin called /hme. The recmmended size fr this partitin is 3GB including the size f the RPMs yu want t update. All dwnladed RPMs are installed during the pst install phase f the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installer. Entering a duble qute character (") in the Rt Passwrd field f the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installatin results in denial f access t the rt lgin. SBUU limits the maximum blck device size n a Linux system t 8TB.

7 Fr the netwrk dwnlad f RPMs, the target system must have a DHCP IP address and the system must be cnnected t a netwrk. After selecting languages using Select Language ptin like Chinese, in SBUU fr installing a Red Hat Linux peratin system, the user has t change run level using init 5 cmmand instead f startx fr applying the selected language. Ntes n Preparing Linux OS Installatin Media SBUU perfrms a media check n the Linux perating system media that is prvided during installatin. This is t ensure that yu d nt cpy damaged media that causes the perating system installatin t fail. This is a default actin perfrmed by SBUU and yu cannt disable it. It is recmmended that yu use the ptical media btained frm the perating system vendr t install Red Hat Enterprise Linux r SUSE Linux perating systems using SBUU. If it is necessary t burn the media using ptical drive burning sftware, make sure that yu: Obtain the ISO image file f the media frm knwn surces. Burn the media at slwer speeds. Use the "Disk at Once" r a similar ptin. Clse the sessin. Ntes fr VMware ESX Fr details n the hardware supprt and ESX build number, see Als, see the Dell OpenManage Server Administratr Cmpatibility Guide and the Dell Systems Sftware Supprt Matrix. On a system with inbuilt SD card slt, if ESXi Installer and recvery OS is supprted, it is shwn in the perating system list fr all cntrllers, independent f whether the SD card is enabled r disabled in the BIOS. DVD/CD media used fr ESXi HDD (5.0) and ESXi Flash (5.0) are the same. Ntes n Dell Utility Partitin installatin Utility Partitin is nt created if the system n which yu are trying t install des nt supprt a Utility Partitin. Ntes n using syscfg and racadm Cmmands When a system is bted frm SBUU, the /pt filesystem is linked t /tmp filesystem. Sme syscfg and racadm functinality use /pt extensively. If user munts any ther device (like a USB drive) t /tmp and issues racadm r syscfg cmmands, the files in /pt will be n lnger visible and the cmmands fails. User is advised t create a temprary directry under under /mnt and munt the USB devices there instead f munting t /tmp. Limitatins HAPI Driver Limitatin: Descriptin: SBUU 2.4 des nt bt n Dell PwerEdge T100. PwerEdge T100 has a BIOS versin that is incmpatible with the current HAPI drivers.

8 Btable USB disk Limitatin: Descriptin: T create a btable USB using SBUU in aut-os deplyment, make sure that the USB disk size is less than r equal t 1GB due t 1GB DOS partitin limitatin. UEFI Limitatin: Descriptin: SBUU is nt supprted in UEFI bt mde. OS Deplyment Limitatin: Descriptin: On 4K sectr hard disk drives, OS deplyment is nt supprted using SBUU. PCIe Extender cards/external drive limitatin: Descriptin: While deplying perating system using SBUU r while bting a system, ensure that the PCIe Extender cards r the external nn-bt cntrller is nt cnnected t any disk drives. Open Issues and Reslutins fr LINUX Operating Systems Descriptin: When yu are using the "Dell Systems Management Tls and Dcumentatin" DVD thrugh DRAC/iDRAC, SBUU may nt eject the DVD befre asking yu t insert the perating system media. It displays the errr message, "Invalid media inserted." T fix, unmunt the DVD frm DRAC/iDRAC; insert the crrect perating system media and munt the drive again. Issue 2 Descriptin: It has been bserved that certain CD burning sftware fails t prepare the media t pass the media check. Open Issues and Reslutins fr Windws Operating System Descriptin: The strage drivers fr Micrsft Windws 2008 SP2 (64 bit) and Micrsft Windws 2008 R2 SP1 differ nly in digital signatures. In Windws PE, yu cannt insert similar drivers. Hence the latest available driver fr Micrsft Windws 2008 R2 SP1 is inserted. Due t this, there might be a digital signature issue. Reslutin: Dwnlad and install the crrespnding DUP frm supprt.dell.cm. Issue 2 Descriptin: Due t a knwn issue, the H700 and H710 driver cllisin while installing any f the Windws 2008 OS flavrs thrugh SBUU, a cnslidated driver has been used. After the OS installatin is cmplete, the "Device Manager" may reprt the presence f an lder versin f the driver in the strage cntrller. Reslutin: Use the Update Driver->Scan autmatically fr updated driver sftware r dwnlad and install the crrespnding DUP frm supprt.dell.cm.

9 Open Issues and Reslutins fr CMC PwerEdge VRTX Shared PREC 8 Yellw Bang n Pst Operating System Installatin Descriptin: Yellw bang bserved n Windws 2008 and Windws 2008 R2 OS installed using SBUU n CMC PwerEdge VRTX shared PERC 8 and PERC H710 Mini cntrller with Pwer Edge mdular servers in CMC PwerEdge VRTX Reslutin: Dwnlad the driver frm supprt.dell.cm and right-click the driver where yellw bang is displayed. Update and rebt the server. Install Windws 2008 OS CMC PwerEdge VRTX shared PREC 8 and PERC H710 Mini cntrller with Pwer Edge mdular servers in CMC PwerEdge VRTX using Lifecycle Cntrller. Open Issues and Reslutins fr Red Hat Enterprise Linux Operating Systems Descriptin: When using the "Dell PwerEdge Installatin and Server Management" CD r DVD media fr new RAID cnfiguratins, installatin f the Red Hat Enterprise Linux perating system may fail if bth the USB CD and USB flppy are cnnected. T avid the installatin failure, remve the USB flppy cnnectin befre rebting the system with the CD/DVD fr the installatin prcess. Issue 2 Descriptin: Installatin f Red Hat Enterprise Linux (versin 4) perating system is nt supprted n any system having the CERC ATA 4ch cntrllers. NOTE: In the abve case, the ptin t install Red Hat Enterprise Linux (versin 4), in the "Select Operating Systems" page, des nt exist. Issue 3 Descriptin: Installatin f Red Hat Enterprise Linux perating system (all versins) is nt supprted n any system having the fllwing cntrllers: Prmise RAID CERC SATA 2S in RAID mde NOTE: In the abve cases, ptin t install Red Hat Enterprise Linux perating system, in the "Select Operating Systems" page, des nt exist. Issue 4 Descriptin: SBUU des nt supprt Nn RAID (Vlume) mde n S100 r S300 SWRAID cntrllers. Issue 5 Descriptin: While cnfiguring the hard drive n a system t install a Red Hat Enterprise Linux perating system, if the hard drive space n the system is used cmpletely and the range specified in the GUI against the "swap" partitin is the same, (fr example:, [ ] MB) the scrll bar remains t the left side.

10 Issue 6 Descriptin: On RHEL flavrs, if an RPM Database crruptin is encuntered while installing OpenManage Server Administratr (Server Administratr), enter the fllwing cmmand t rebuild the database: rm -f /var/lib/rpm/ db* rpm --rebuilddb Yu can then prceed with installing Server Administratr. Open Issues and Reslutins fr Nvell SLES10 r SLES11 Operating Systems Descriptin: The SLES 10 r SLES 11 perating system installatin may fail n systems equipped with multiple RAID and/r SCSI cntrllers, installed n the system bard r in PCI slts. This failure may ccur when using Server Setup r perfrming a manual installatin. When tw r mre RAID r SCSI cntrllers exist, install SLES 10 r SLES 11 with nly ne cnfigured RAID r SCSI cntrller. Cnfigure the ther cntrllers after yu install the SLES 10 r SLES 11 perating system. Issue 2 Descriptin: When certain cards, ntably Qlgic r Emulex fiber channel cards, are present in PwerEdge R805 and PwerEdge M905 systems, SLES 11 (and ther Linux kernels later than ) may cause the system t rebt when drivers fr thse cards are laded. The issue ccurs because the Linux kernel changes the memry address assignments t certain add-n PCI devices such that they verlap the secnd I/O APIC interrupt cntrller in the system. T wrk arund the issue n PwerEdge R805, set the Optical Drive Cntrller (under Integrated Devices) t "On" in the system setup. This changes the system resurce assignments such that this issue des nt ccur. If this wrkarund fails, add the kernel parameter acpi=nirq t the kernel cmmand line t prevent the Linux kernel frm using the I/O APIC interrupt cntrllers. T wrk arund the issue n PwerEdge M905, add the kernel parameter acpi=nirq t the kernel cmmand line t prevent the Linux kernel frm using the I/O APIC interrupt cntrllers. A fix fr this wuld be available in a future BIOS updates fr SLES 11. Issue 3 Descriptin: On installing SLES 11 SP1, if the lgin Windw is nt gnme, rebt the system t restre gnme as the Windw manager Open Issues and Reslutins fr VMware ESX 4.0 Operating System Descriptin: If yu chse t install VMware ESX 4.x perating system, the Dell Utility Partitin is deleted during the perating system installatin. Issue 2 Descriptin: While installing ESXi flash versin (using recvery media), RAID virtual disks cannt be created n the vflash device. Virtual disks can be created nly n hard drives.

11 Open Issues and Reslutins fr Firmware Update Feature Descriptin: The "View/Edit/Reset" becmes enabled fr the "Firmware Update" even if yu d nt select any cmpnents fr the update. When yu visit the "Firmware Update" and specify the SUU (repsitry) lcatin either using the DVD, r NFS, r SMB, r USB media, yu can view the cmparisn reprt. If the server cmparisn reprt des nt have any updatable cmpnents, yu cannt cnfigure anything n that page. Hwever, since the user cnfigured the repsitry, the "View/Edit/Reset" ptin n the "Hme" page is enabled irrespective f the cnfiguratin f the firmware updates. Issue 2 Descriptin: In the "Repsitry Selectin" page, if yu select NFS r SMB befre clicking "Refresh USB Devices" and n USB devices are fund, then yu must perfrm ne f the fllwing: Insert a USB device and click "Refresh USB devices" again Select any f the ther ptins and prceed Installatin Prcedure 1. Insert the "Dell Systems Management Tls and Dcumentatin" DVD int the system drive and rebt the system. If the system is supprted by the DVD, the "Bt Menu" page appears. The "Bt Menu" page cntains the fllwing ptins t bt the system: "Dell Systems Build and Update Utility" "Optical Media (CD/DVD) Check" "Skip Optical Media (CD/DVD) Bt - Bt t Hard Drive" 2. When yu select the "Dell Systems Build and Update Utility" ptin, the "Hme" page fr "Dell Systems Build and Update Utility" appears. Frm the "Hme" page, yu can access the SBUU mdules: Server Operating System Installatin Firmware Update Hardware Cnfiguratin View Hardware SBUU can als be used t create a btable image, r exprt cnfiguratins fr, any f the supprted systems. Click "System(s) Selectin" t change the system(s) f chice. The current system is selected by default. 3. Each f the abve mdules can be cnfigured independently, and all the cnfiguratins can then be applied at nce. Alternatively, the server OS Installatin can be dne by itself. T cnfigure any f the abve mdules, click "Cnfigure" against the mdule name. Fllw the instructins t cmplete the cnfiguratin. Cntext-sensitive help is prvided n each page. 4. T apply all cnfiguratins, click "Apply/Exprt Cnfiguratin". Fllw the instructins t apply the cnfiguratins, and click "Cntinue". 5. Insert the perating system CD/DVD media if installing frm CD/DVD, and when prmpted by the system. 6. The system rebts and the unattended perating system installatin cntinues. 7. When the installatin is cmplete, the system is ready fr use.
