TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Is overclocking dangerous? It begins at Bios Benchmarking Improving your benchmark score What to do if you can't access your overclocking options Overclocking in Windows Heating and cooling Cooling the case Different ways to overclock Cooling your motherboard How to operate the fans in Bios Step by step guide to How to overclock your CPU When things go horribly wrong Bios Language Simplified Summary My personnel Recommendations 2

IMPROVING YOUR BENCHMARK SCORE There is a few tricks to improving your score in benchmarking, some of them are not practical for everyday use but help bump up the score none the less. Over the next few paragraphs you'll come to realise that everybody's favourite operating system loves to hoard useless files, run useless programs and generally sap the heck out of your PC! However if you follow these tips, not only will you improve your 3DMark score but you will notice a leap in performance in windows and other programs as well. All these techniques work on all Windows operating systems including XP, Vista and Windows 7. If you do run into any problems or you are not too sure what you are doing, Just create a restore point before you make any changes. You'll find this in System configuration utility. System Configuration Even when your computer is sat there doing nothing, their could be over 60 programs running in the background sapping the heck out of your PC! So as you can imagine, it is very important to disable these programs for optimal performance. To see what I mean hit CTRL +ALT + DELETE then press the processes tab. This will show you how really busy your CPU really is. This tells you how many programs are running in the background Windows owners will have on average 40 to 50 programs running in the background. This is how much of the CPU is being used at any one time. Now that said and done, let me show you how to deactivate all of the dead wood in one go. 1. To get yourself more CPU performance, head straight start/windows orb at the bottom left and corner of your desktop Then press run. 3

2. The System Configuration Windows should pop up. 3. The first thing to do in the System Configuration is to deactivate all the unwanted programs that are no longer needed to be running in the background. So the first place we're going to go to is to the Startup tab. Most if not all can be unticked. Always at least have your anti-virus running for protection 4. As you can see all the boxes are ticked as default and what this basically means is that all the ticked programs are running in the background. Now to tell you the truth, most of these programs can be unticked because they are not simply needed and take up precious resources. However I would recommend to keep on your anti virus and important drivers. Everything else can be turned off. Once you've unticked what you don't need, click apply. 4

5. After configurating your Startup, move on the next tap (Services). But before you go and untick everything I would deeply recommend ticking the Hide all Microsoft services First. The reason for this is these are windows related programs and most are needed to run XP/Vista smoothly. Make sure that you tick this box. Note: If you want to turn off some of the Microsoft's services, here is a few that you can turn off safely. Offline Files (unless you're using Offline File Sync) Tablet PC Input Service (unless you have a tablet PC) Terminal Services Windows Search (If you have already disabled indexing) Fax (unless you're using a fax modem) 6. Once you have turned off what you don't need, click apply. 7. While we are still in the System Configuration, You now want head to the Boot tab then select Advanced options. 5

Changing the Number of processors to the maximum number will make your PC boot up us using all the CPU cores therefore aiding boot up times 8. This will open up your Boot Advanced Options. In there you want to tick the number of processors and simply select the number of cores you have. So if you have dual core CPU for example, you would select 2. If you've got a quad core you then would select 4 and so on. 9. Once you've done click on OK. That is everything you can do in your System Configuration. Although after making all these changes I would recommend rebooting your PC even if your PC doesn't prompt you to. Performance Options When you first install Windows you'll have all the visual effects on as default. And although they look pretty, they can take a considerable amount of your computer's resources. Depending on which OS (operating system) you're using, this could make or break it. If your using Vista or Windows 7? I would recommend turning some the visual effects off, especially on the lower end systems. However if your using XP, the performance will be less impressive but if like me, and you believe every ounce of performance is crucial, then deactivate them all. 1. To deactivate the unneeded eyecandy, go to start and control panel and select the main title System and maintenance. 6

2. From in there scroll down and again select the main title Performance Information and Tools. 2. From in there go to the top, left corner and select Adjust visual effects. 3. You'll now be presented with the Performance Options. Now it's up to you what you want running but for optimal performance you'll want to untick everything. However, I personally like some of the effects on just to make it easier on the eyes. This is what I leave on... Here are the ones I keep on myself Show thumbnails instead of icons Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop Use visual styles on windows and buttons Turning this one off will deactivate Window Aero's fancy graphics. I personally keep it on but for optimal performance turn it off 7

4. After you've chosen what you want just click apply. Anti-virus Not a lot of people know about this but if you turn of the anti-virus before benchmarking and gaming, this will give the CPU less to think about and therefore can focus on the matter at hand (benchmarking/gaming) Another thing to be aware of is some anti-virus programs use more CPU power than others. The main culprit believe it or not is Norton Ant-virus. Norton seems to use more of the CPU than any other Anti-virus on the market. My recommendation is to ditch Norton and move to AVG anti-virus. AVG uses less clock cycles and the best bit of all, it's completely free. You can download AVG for free here. I recommend AVG. It is free and it uses less CPU clock cycles than most commercial anti virus software. Advance System Care In my humble opinion, Advance System Care is just as good if not better than a $40 plus registry cleaner. I've actually bought a few in the past and they've never been any better than This. So save your pennies and check this out. It cleans numerous sectors of your PC and remove other nasties like spyware as well. You can download Advance System Care here. To begin, simply install Advance System Care and then activate it. This is what it looks like... 8

Make sure you check out the Utilities Section. There's tons of cool apps and Features like Game Booster that will further enhance your PC's performance! All you have to do is hit scan and Advance System Care will do all the hard work for you. It should take about a minute or so to finish depending on size of hardrive and what's installed on it. Once Advance System Care has finished scanning, just press the repair button and that's it. CCleaner Another fantastic program that's worth checking out is CCleaner. CCleaner is wonderfully simple but at the same time just as powerful at what it does. What CCleaner does is clean your PC from top to bottom. It will clean all your cookies, history files and many more unwanted stuff that slows down and clutters your PC. You can download CCleaner here. To use CCleaner start it up and make sure everything is ticked apart from Auto complete form history. Then click Analyse. 9

Be sure to check out CCleaner's other features. It can be quite a handy cool Tick everyone in this column except this one Hit Analyze It'll run for a minute or so depending on how much crap you have on your computer. Once it's finished simply click Run Cleaner. Drivers We should all know this one. Keep all the drivers up to date. However you will get a lot of brownie points for tinkering around with your graphics's card driver to improve your PC's performance. Turning everything like Antialiasing to performance mode will hike it up no end. However, I never use the graphics drivers for tuning my graphics cards. I find them quite limited and you can't really push them to their fullest. If you're not sure what drivers need updating, you want to check out Driver Agent. What Driver Agent will do is scan all your computer's components and tell which drivers need updating. It only takes 2 minutes to do. However, scanning your drivers and telling you which ones need updating is free, There is a charge for actually downloading them from their site. But if your a bit cheeky like me, just get your free scan results and get the drivers yourself. To visit Driver Agent to get your (free) scan, click here. TIP. If you have a Nvidia graphics card, always opt for beta driver! The beta drivers are exactly the same as the official drivers but with added optimizations for the latest games, applications and programs. 10

Prefetch Every time you boot up a program for the first time, a file is instantly created to and is placed in a file called Prefetch. The reason why this file is created, is so the next time you boot up that program, it will boot up quicker. Now this sounds great at first but over time your Prefetch will become so saturated that it will start to have the reverse affect and actually start to slow your computer down. 1: To clean your Prefetch simply go to the Start and type Prefetch in the Windows search bar. 2: This is what your prefetch should look like. Simply select everything (And I mean everything) and right click on the selected and then select delete. Uninstalling A fast Hardrive is a empty hardrive. So if you've got an hardrive full to the brim, delete the programs and games you don't need to speed up your Hardrive. TIP. If there is any games you want to delete but you don't want to lose your saves points. Simply save the game save files, then delete the 11

game/s. This way you can regain gigs of space that otherwise your games would be taking up but yet you don't have to worry about losing your position in your games ;-) Rebuild the paging file to optimize performance If you have noticed that game performance has diminished or that applications are loading slower than they once did on your PC, you may want to give this tip a try. By default, Windows does not clear the contents of the paging file (the area of the hard disk Windows reserves to act as extra RAM memory). Over time it can become fragmented and less efficient. One solution is to reset this file every so often, ensuring a fresh start for your applications and games. To reset the Windows page file: 1. Click on the start menu and right click on computer. Choose properties and from in here go to the left-hand panel, choose advanced system settings. 2. Click the 'advanced' tab, then under the performance heading choose settings. 3. Choose the advanced tab again, then under the virtual memory heading click change. 12

4. Uncheck automatically manage paging file size for all drives at the top. 5. Highlight the drive that contains your paging file. Select the 'custom' size option below. Put theses two values to 0 6. Change the minimum and maximum page file size to '0' and click set. 7. Restart your computer. 8. Now going back to your paging file properties window, highlight the drive that contained your page file. Choose the system managed size option and click set. Confirm the overwrite and click OK. Detect and Repair Disk Errors Over time, your hard disk develops bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing difficult or even impossible. To detect and repair disk errors, Windows has a built-in tool called the Error Checking utility. It ll search the hard disk for bad sectors and system errors and repair them for faster performance. 1. Go to start then computer. Right click on your main hardrive and select properties. 13

2. From properties go to the Tools tab and click the Check now button. A window will pop up. From in there just tick the Scan for the attempt recovery of bad sectors. 3. Now Windows will will scan your Hardrive for errors Defragging The last thing you want to do now defrag your hardrive. This will help to pack everything together and improve hardrive performance. Now I can't personally stand Window's defragger but don't worry, because I'm going to show where to get a much better one than Windows own shoddy attempt. Auslogics Disk defrag is it's name and I think you'll find it's quick and easy to use and it seems to do quite a good job as well. To can download Auslogics's defragger here. 14

Just install Auslogics's defragger, hit next and off you go. Auslogics's defragger is faster than Vista's own efforts but best of all, you get a constant progress report therefore giving you an idea how long it will take and how fragmented your drive is For optimal performance, always at least have 15% free space on your hardrive. This will give your defragger enough room to move your files around for defragmenting Advance Defragging (Video Tutorial Included) If you want to go further down the rabbit hole so to speak and optimize your hardrive even further then I'd recommend to check it out Ultimate Defragger. Ultimate Defragger actually allows you to move your files to where ever you want on the platter of your hardware. Now this may not sound too exciting at first but moving all your programs, games and apps to outer rim of your hardrive actually increases performance, making your programs run faster! There's two version, a paid version and and a free one. The free version is really cool and there's no trial period meaning you can use it forever. Download it here 15

What makes Ultimate Defrag unique is you can Actually move all the files You want to perform faster At the outer rim of the Hardrive making your Games and programs to Perform faster than what Any other defragger can! The only problem is, it's not very user friendly so to make your life easier, I've made video tutorial on how to use it! Click Here to watch the video tutorial Now that we have tuned up Windows for optimal performance and stability, we can now go into Bios and I'll reveal how to activate and maximize your hidden Bios options for extreme performance... 16
