2 Apps The word app is short for application. App has become a marketing term that is being used to indicate something new when in reality it is not. An application is anything that runs a set of instructions on a computer, smartphone, or other device. To the computer user there is no technical difference between a Program or an App. Any differences you see between any applications are only a result of how the programmer designs them. Programmers of apps tend to make them lighter-weight and more focused on accomplishing specific tasks. That does not mean that an app cannot be a full featured application. Microsoft Edge, the new internet browser in Windows 10, is being marketed as an app but in reality, is a full featured internet browser similar to Google Chrome or FireFox. There are also apps that perform the same functions as the programs contained in the Microsoft Office Suite. You will notice differences in the appearance of the controls in Apps. Apps usually have fewer controls than programs because they are designed to perform fewer tasks. The controls are also cosmetically different because they are using the latest looks. There is no difference in how you use the controls. Every control has a set of instructions attached to it that will be executed when the control is activated. Controls are activated by selecting the control and a left-click with the mouse. Windows 10 Apps Apps were introduced to Windows with the Windows 8 Upgrade. A standard assortment of Apps is always included with an installation or upgrade of Windows 10. Additional apps are available in the official Window Store. There are currently over 670,000 approved Windows apps available in the Windows Store. Standard apps are the apps that Microsoft includes the installation or upgrade to Windows 10. Examples of standard apps include: Windows Store Yes, there is an app to get additional apps. Microsoft Edge Edge is the replacement for Internet Explorer. Use it to view the internet. Calendar Use the Windows Calendar to keep up to date on your schedule. Maps Get directions and find locations. A new feature will let you download maps for use offline. Groove Music player that will play music form your computer or online. Music can be purchased from Groove. Photos The new photo viewer in Windows 10. Mail An optional method to use your accounts. Weather Displays your local weather and additional locations. Includes forecasts and radar maps. And more Weather App The Weather app is typical of the majority of apps. It only has one basic function and that is to give you information about the weather. You do not create anything with the Weather app. As with many apps it will connect to the internet when opened. Once it has connected to the internet it will retrieve data about the weather. You have a choice of a number of ways to view the weather and can select different locations to view the weather at that location. Weather is an intuitive app that you can experiment with to see what features you like. Go ahead and experiment, you can t hurt anything. Page 2 Revised 10/17/17

3 Control Groups Many apps have a limited number of controls and controls groups. The Weather app only has 3 control groups: A Title Bar at the top of the window which has the standard min, max, and close buttons. A toolbar below the title bar. A menu at the left of the window. Controls Calendar There is also a minimal number of controls needed for the Weather app. The Menu control and the More control will expand out the toolbar or menu to display descriptions for the controls. The Search Box is limited to searching for locations by city or area code. The calendar is another useful app that is simple in its use. You can maintain a calendar and access it from anywhere with the windows signin account that was used to create the calendar. If you update your calendar it is automatically updated everywhere. You can even share it, at your option, with family, friends, or business. Page 3 Revised 10/17/17

4 The calendar has a number of views so that you can view events by Day, Week, Month, or Year. Events can be added or edited by clicking on an event or a date in the calendar. There are 2 screens available to add an event: Click a date in the calendar to open the Quick Add window. Enter an Event name, time, and location to add the event. Additional details can be added with the More details link. Click an established event, More details, or the button to open a window with all the options for managing an event. This includes adding a note and scheduling a repeating series of events. Page 4 Revised 10/17/17

5 Windows Store You can add additional apps to your computer. Windows 10 has set the default setting that prevents you from adding apps from any location and restricts you to adding apps only from the Windows Store. I recommend that you do not change this setting and only use the Windows Store to add apps as this is your trusted vendor. All other sources entail an element of risk. The Windows Store is located online and is accessed by the Store app. The Store app was installed with the Windows 10. Over 670,000 apps are available at the Windows Store. Both Free and Paid versions of apps are available. You can only access the Windows Store while logged in with your Microsoft account. Open the Store app by locating the Store icon on the Start menu or Windows toolbar and activating it. The Store will open and display its home page. Apps are arranged in the store by categories. You can look for an app within a category or search for a specific app by name. The app categories can be accessed by any of the links in the Store. Once you have accessed a category you can scroll through all the available apps. You can go to a new category at any time. You can also use the Search Box to locate any category or title. In the example I searched for Mahjong. As the search request is typed in suggestions will be made below the search box. You can select any suggestion as soon as it appears or you can press the Enter key to view all relevant results. Select any result to view information about the selected app. You can install any app by activating the button. Installation is automatic and you can just sit back and relax. As soon as the installation is complete you can open and use the app. If you are installing a paid app you will be asked to re-enter your password to authorize the purchase. If you have not yet set up a payment method with Microsoft, you will be asked to do so at this time. This is a secure payment location and it is safe to enter your personal information including the credit card you will be using. All future purchases will use this payment method unless you revise it. Page 5 Revised 10/17/17
