L0 Introduction, and Connecting to and Using the Remote Lab Environment Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-1

Objectives This in an introduction to the Global Knowledge lab guide, and to the Global Knowledge remote lab environment, for the ICND1, ICND2, and CCNA Boot Camp courses. The objectives for this lab are: Understand the lab guide. Gain familiarity with lab topology and lab environment. Connect to the console ports on your pod s routers and switch. Connect to your pod s PC1 and PC2. L0-2 Global Knowledge Training LLC

Introduction This Global Knowledge lab guide includes extensive hands-on labs that allow you to practice the skills you learn in class. Each lab includes sample output and screen shots for the lab steps. This detail is a great reference for you, both when you are completing the lab, and after class. For example, you may wish to review the lab steps when applying the skills learned to your current job, or while preparing for a Cisco certification exam. Having the example output readily available also saves you time when you are completing your labs; you can focus on performing the labs rather than taking detailed notes. It is very important to not treat the labs as a typing exercise! We encourage you to use the lab time to thoroughly understand the concepts covered. In some of the lab exercises you will encounter commands or concepts that are not explicitly covered in the associated course material; explanations are provided within the lab guide. These extras are included to help you build real world skills and to make the lab experience more valuable to you. One final note: The lab environment includes a pod with two routers and two PCs, as well as a pod switch. If you are in a team of two people, each of you can be responsible for configuring at least one device during each lab. Since the workload is not identical on each device, you may wish to alternate between devices while progressing through the labs. Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-3

Lab Topology The following diagram illustrates the physical lab topology used in this course. Each subsequent lab includes a logical lab topology, including the addressing used during that lab. Command List There are no commands used in this lab. L0-4 Global Knowledge Training LLC

Procedure Important All of the information needed for connecting to and using the Global Knowledge remote lab environment is contained in this lab document. Subsequent labs assume that you are familiar with this information. Pod definition 1. The equipment in the lab is grouped by pods; a network has six pods. In a Global Knowledge classroom, each team of up to two people will configure a pod; team membership should be defined prior to starting this lab. Your username and password determine the pod to which you will connect. If you are using lab credits to do labs outside of the classroom, you may be connected to a different pod each time you start up a new lab; note that the equipment is the same in each pod. Each pod contains two PCs (known as PC1 and PC2), two routers (known as PxR1 and PxR2, or pod routers) and a workgroup switch (known as PxSW or switch or pod switch); in each of the device s names, x is your pod number. Each pod router has the following connections: A GigabitEthernet connection to the pod switch A GigabitEthernet connection to the core switch A serial connection to the other router A serial connection to a Frame Relay network The serial connections are not used in the ICND1 course. The pod switch has the following connections: A FastEthernet connection to each PC A FastEthernet connection to each pod router Two FastEthernet connections to the core switch Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-5

Connecting to your pod 2. To connect to your pod, start up your browser and go to Login using the username and password that has been provided to you. 3. You will be connected to the lab system. If you are doing labs within a Global Knowledge classroom: A lab will already be started for you. A separate window containing the PDF of the lab document will open up; you can come back to this window at any time to reference the documentation. If you are using lab credits to do labs outside of the classroom: You may be put on the screen to select a lab; if not, click on the Labs tab and choose Select a Lab. From the Select Lab menu, review the list of labs and select the lab that you wish to do. Another window containing the PDF of the lab document opens up. You can come back to this window at any time to reference the documentation. Back on the main window, under the Labs tab, click on Go to Lab. A message usually appears, indicating that a pod will be available shortly. (If the message indicates no pod is currently available, try again later.) If this is acceptable, click on OK ; the lab will be available in approximately 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can click on Reserve a Lab to schedule a lab for a future time. 4. When the lab is ready, a Setup Results window appears and a window indicating that RDP has started briefly appears. On the left-side of your browser window you will see your Pod Control information, including your pod number; if you don t see this, refresh your browser window. L0-6 Global Knowledge Training LLC

If you are using lab credits to do labs outside of the classroom, you will have the "System Menu" portion of the Pod Control information as shown. If you are doing labs within a Global Knowledge classroom, you will not have this section. which pod you are configuring. 5. Click on the Topology link; you will get a message similar to the following (this example is from Internet Explorer 9): Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-7

6. Click on Open. You will get a message similar to the following: 7. Click on Connect. You will get a window similar to the following, populated with your username. Enter your password, and click OK. L0-8 Global Knowledge Training LLC

8. A terminal server connection will be opened in a new window. You will see the lab topology diagram on the first tab: If you do not use this terminal server window for a while, it may go dormant; when you return and click on the window it may take a period of time to respond. The window may also time out; if it does, you can re-open it by clicking on the Topology link again. 9. The lab diagram shows all of the equipment in both your pod and the core. Each device in your pod has a power status indicator on the upper left side of each icon. There is a legend in the upper portion of the lab diagram screen that indicates what each icon means. If you hover over the small x to the top left of the legend, you will see the message Dismiss legend ; you can close this legend by clicking on the small x. Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-9

10. Right-click on any blank space on the lab diagram and you will see the following menu: Choose Lab Guide to open a tab with the current lab guide populated in it. Choose Help to open a tab with help information. Choose Legend to put the legend back on the screen. Choose Refresh to refresh the lab diagram. Choose Change Lab to change the lab guide document to another lab that runs on the same equipment, if any are available to you. that this does NOT reset the equipment. Refreshing the lab diagram or changing the lab document also closes any other tabs that are open. L0-10 Global Knowledge Training LLC

Connecting to the console port of a device in your pod 11. To access the console port of your pod switch or routers, click on the appropriate device icon on the lab topology diagram; a new tab will appear. For example, to access one of your routers, click on its icon on the lab topology diagram. A new tab will appear, containing a JTelnet session to the device. (A security warning window may pop up; if so, click Run.) Important You must click on the terminal window to give it focus and allow it to accept input. Each time you connect to another device, you will see the list of tabs at the top of the screen expand. To change between devices, simply click on the appropriate tab. To close the tab, click on the X at the right side of the appropriate tab. Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-11

12. Notice on each of the device tabs for the routers and switch there are some control buttons; these buttons have the following functions: Break: sends the CTRL-Break command to the device console port Disconnect: disconnects from the device console port Reconnect: connect to the device console port, provided it is not already in use Clear Line: clear any existing console connections to the device Power Off: powers off the device Power On: powers on the device There is also a Font area with a drop-down menu within which you can select the font size for the terminal window. If you see a Not connected message when attempting to connect to a pod device, then the console port of that device may be busy. Check with other users on the pod to make sure that no one else is connected to the console port of that device. You can use the Clear Line button on the device s tab to clear the console port (this will disconnect any other user), and then use the Reconnect button to attempt to connect again. 13. You can also power the devices on and off from the lab topology diagram. To power on either of the routers or the switch in your pod (if that device is not already powered on), click on the round green power icon. Similarly, to power off a device, click on the round red power icon. If you hover over the power icon with your mouse you will see the appropriate message displayed: Power on this device or Power off the device. 14. The JTelent windows support copy and paste: To copy text from a JTelnet window, simply select the text; it will be copied to the clipboard. To paste text to a JTelnet window, simply right-click; the text will be copied to the window. L0-12 Global Knowledge Training LLC

Connecting to your pod s PC1 or PC2 15. To connect to your pod s PC1 or PC2, click its icon on the lab topology diagram. By default the virtual machine (VM) on the both PC1 and PC2 is powered on. Next to the PC1 and PC2 icons on the lab topology diagram, there are round icons to Suspend this VM and Stop this VM. If you need to reboot one of the PCs, use the Stop this VM icon. When the PC is off, this will change to a Play this VM icon; use this icon to restart the PC. 16. A new tab will appear, containing a connection to a Windows 8 VM. (Depending on the screen resolution of your local PC, you may have to use the scroll bars in order to see the entire screen.) There may be a short delay in opening the PCs tab the first time. The firewall must be turned OFF on both PC1 and PC2. If for some reason it is on, turn it off. (The firewall is accessed using Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall -> Turn Windows Firewall on or off; select both off options.) Important Refer to the Appendix Configuring and Using the Network Interface on the Lab Windows 8 PCs for details on operating the PCs for the labs. The labs assume that you are familiar with the information in this Lab 0 and that Appendix. 17. When you are finished using PC1 or PC2, you can close it by clicking on the X on its tab. Important When you are finished using the lab equipment, click on the Black X in the top right hand frame of the Lab Diagram window; do not click on X in the Red box at the top of your Terminal Server session. Clicking on the Black X closes out your session and returns you to the remotelabs.com screen. (Depending on the screen resolution of your local PC, you may have to use the scroll bars in order to see this X.) (Clicking on the on X in the Red box would terminate the session abnormally; this could cause issues when you try to re-connect.) Global Knowledge Training LLC L0-13

Reset-to window 18. In the browser window Pod Control Information, under the pod links section, there is a Reset-to menu item. When you click on this item, the Reset-to window opens. 19. The Reset-to feature reverts the equipment to a pre-set configuration, ready for a specific lab. To use this feature, choose a lab from the Lab Document drop down menu and click on the Reset button; the equipment will reset and pre-configure itself for that lab. When the reset is complete you will also see the document associated with the new lab. that the reset will take approximately 10 minutes. Choosing the Change Doc button instead will load the new lab document PDF into the lab document window, but will not reset or configure the equipment. 20. This Reset-to window also allows you to change the keyboard setting for the VMs from its default setting of English (United States). To change from the default, choose a setting from the Set Keyboard drop down menu and click on the Set Keyboard button. Lab Complete L0-14 Global Knowledge Training LLC
