12 12 Quick start for the HP MSA VDS hardware provider
13 2OverviewoftheHPMSAVDS hardware provider The HP MSA VDS hardware provider is software that installs on a Windows 2003 server connected to an HP MSA disk array. The hardware provider works with the Microsoft Virtual Disk Service (VDS) to expand the capability of the Windows operating system and Windows applications to manage the HP disk array LUNs and ports. Figure 1 and the rest of this chapter explain how the hardware provider and other components interact to enable the Windows server to manage disk array functions. Figure 1 HP MSA VDS hardware provider solution block diagram Microsoft Windows 2003 operating system The HP hardware provider and Microsoft s VDS service work under the control of the Windows Server 2003 operating system. The Windows OS operates the servers to which the disk array is attached and supports the applications, services, and providers that store and retrieve data on the array and manage array disks and volumes. 14 Windows Disk Management Windows Disk Management consists of the Windows software and user interfaces that enable you to manage disks, volumes, and file systems. The user interface for disk management is included in the Computer Management application within the Administrative Tools Control Panel. Windows management applications Windows applications operate through the Microsoft VDS service and the HP hardware provider to use and manage array disks and volumes. Microsoft command line utilities Microsoft offers two command line utilities: DiskPart and DiskRaid. These interfaces enable you to script disk management tasks so you can automate configuration of multiple storage disks. The DiskPart utility, which comes standard with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, can be used to manage disks, volumes, and partitions. The DiskRaid utility is used to configure hardware RAID storage systems. Both utilities work with any storage hardware that includes a VDS hardware provider. Windows software providers The Microsoft software providers (called Basic Disk Provider and Dynamic Disk Provider) interface between the Windows OS, Windows applications, and devices such as individual disks, tape or CD drives, disk arrays, and other hardware. Through the software providers and VDS, Windows performs actions such as partitioning, mounting, and managing file systems on these hardware devices. The HP MSA VDS hardware provider is not required for Microsoft or other software providers to perform tasks on HP disk arrays. The HP MSA VDS hardware provider extends the capabilities of various Windows providers and applications to do additional LUN and port management tasks that normally require proprietary HP array management software. Microsoft Virtual Disk Service (VDS) Microsoft VDS adds an interface for managing disk array volumes and logical units to the Windows operating system.administratorscanidentify, configure, and monitor supported HP disk array volumes from the Windows Server 2003 Microsoft Management Console (MMC). VDS works with Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Snap-in, Disk Manager, and the DiskPart command line interface. VDS manages the HP disk array to make it appear like a Windows disk for Windows applications. When you use Microsoft Management Console, Windows Disk Manager, and the Microsoft DiskPart or DiskRaid utility to control the array, your commands are sent to the array through VDS and the software or hardware providers. VDS performs these functions: Coordinates all providers and clients (local and remote) Performs binding Discloses hardware LUNs to software disks Performs common file system functions Monitors volume status For detailed information about the Microsoft VDS service, search the Microsoft website. 14 OverviewoftheHPMSAVDShardwareprovider
15 HP MSA VDS hardware provider The HP MSA VDS hardware provider consists of special HP DLLs and executables that install on the Windows server. These components extend the capability of Windows and Windows applications to communicate with and manage the disk array. The advantage of VDS and the HP MSA VDS hardware provider is that they enable you to manage multiple array models from a single interface. Using Windows applications you can manage array ports, discover and manage LUNs, format, partition, and mount volumes, and create and manage file systems and files. HP disk array Specific HP VDS hardware providers work with specific HP disk arrays. Different supporting technologies and features within the arrays cause some differences in their capabilities. The hardware provider for the MSA disk arrays has been designed specially for those arrays, including Active-Passive and Active-Active installations. Troubleshooting procedures The following instructions present typical problems and solutions. VDS will not install The HP MSA VDS hardware provider installation works only on the Windows versions listed in the HP MSA VDS hardware provider release notes. The installer will not install the software on other versions of Windows. Cannot manage the array using hardware provider Use a process of elimination to determine whether the problem is with one of the following components: Application you are using to manage the array Windows Disk Management configuration VDS HP MSA VDS hardware provider Perform these tests: 1. Do the array volumes appear in the Disk Management tool? To check, in the Windows menu bar select Start > Control Panel. ClickAdministrative Tools and click Computer Management. Double-click Storage, anddouble-clickdisk Management. If LUNs are visible, Disk Management, VDS, and the array are communicating successfully. Any problems may be caused by a configuration problem with the management application or hardware provider. If array LUNs are not visible, click Action > Refresh and Action > Rescan Disks. If LUNs are not visible, the problem could be connectivity or configuration of any or all of the components listed above. 2. Use the DiskPart utility to check for the presence of array volumes. At the Run command line, enter diskpart.exe. Thenenterlist volume to see a list of volumes. (Enter help to see a list of commands.) If array volumes are listed, DiskPart, the array and VDS are communicating successfully. Any problem with operation could be caused by configuration of Windows Disk Management, the management application, or the hardware provider. If LUNs are not visible, there may be a problem with connectivity or with configuration of the array or with the HP MSA VDS hardware provider. If you receive this error message: The disk management services could not complete the operation, VDS is not enabled at startup. Click Start > Control Panel. Click Administrative Tools and click Services. Right-clickVirtual Disk Service and select Properties. Click Manual under Startup type, and click OK. 3. 26 6. Make sure you logged into all devices and software using administrator privileges. 7. Check the Windows application event log. 8. VisittheMicrosoftwebsitesupportknowledgebaseandsearchfor VDSlogging. Turnon logging as instructed by Microsoft. Use the Microsoft procedure for testing VDS and checking the log. Using the trace log for troubleshooting The current version of the HP MSA VDS hardware provider includes a trace logging feature that may be useful when you call HP technical support for help. Before you call support to solve a problem with the hardware provider, set trace logging to the highest logging level as instructed below: 1. Locate the following Windows registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett- Packard\HardwareProviders\MSA\VDS\Parameters To do so, click Start, clickrun, typeregedit in the run window, and click OK. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to find the desired registry key. If you are not familiar with editing the Windows registry, you may want to search the Microsoft website (microsoft.com) for detailed instructions. To protect your system against editing errors, be sure to make a backup copy of the registry key before editing. 2. Edit the logging level value in the registry key to change it from the default level of 3 to the highest logging level of 5. With the logging level set to 5 the log file will include more detailed information that will help HP to troubleshoot the problem. 3. Locate and delete or rename the existing trace log file, named hpmsafcvds.log. Thefile is located where the hardware provider files were installed. The hardware provider will create a new trace log file and will begin logging the highest level of trace information. 4. Reboot the server. 5. Repeat the tasks that caused the problems you observed previously so the trace log records the hardware provider activities when the problems occur. 6. Call HP technical support for help and additional instructions. HP technical support contact information is included in the Preface near the front of this guide. See HP technical support. 7. When you finish using the trace log for troubleshooting, edit the registry key again to set the logging level back to 3. This helps ensure that you don t create a large log file unnecessarily. Log file levels include 0 5, with 1 providing the least logging and 5 the most. Level 0 turns logging off. The level definitions are as follows: Level 0 OFF Level 1 ERROR Level 2 WARNING Level 3 INFORMATION Level 4 DEBUG Level 5 TRACE 26 Troubleshooting the HP MSA VDS hardware provider
