Standalone Reporting Module for AD6 AD6 includes the Standalone Reporting Module for generating reports from the command line or in a background job, which allows you to automatically generate your inventory reports without starting the AD6 Main Console. Encrypted Connection Information Now the database connections strings for the AN6 Technician Web Portal and Self-Service Portal stored in an encrypted form for improved security. Enhanced Web Portal Performance Version improves the overall performance of the AN6 Technician Web Portal and Self Service Portal. 3 Upgrade Considerations AN6 Web Portal Configuration Settings and Customizations The upgrade will replace all existing Web Portal files (except for the \Config\welcome.cfg file that stores the settings of the Self Service Portal Support Home page) with new ones. During the upgrade, you will be prompted to back up your existing files. When you do so, your existing configuration settings will be preserved and the Web Portal Configuration Wizard appears auto-populated with your settings. Additionally, if you have made any customizations to your Web Portal source files, you will be able to use the backed-up files as a reference for reviewing and applying your customizations. If you have localized the Web text resources in the English.xml files, you will have to restore your backed-up localization changes manually. For instructions, see Alloy Software Knowledge Base Article KB Web portals localization changes are not imported during the upgrade at Alloy Software Support Portal. AN6 Software Licenses Business Logic Changes The version employs a new system option for the status of Software Licenses: Retired. If you have deleted the Retired status of Software Licenses in version 6.1.0, the upgrade will re-create that item and mark it as system. Additionally, the upgrade will add a new Task Action for Software Licenses: Un-retire License. After the upgrade, you should review your business logic for Software Licenses and modify it if needed. For details, see the Alloy Navigator 6 Administration Guide: Workflow Management. Database Changes The new version of AN6 and AD6 includes minor changes to the database structure. Those changes require you to upgrade both your AN6 and AD6 databases to the latest version. No data fields or tables have been renamed or deleted; therefore the update will not affect any custom SQL queries you may have. For details on the structure of AN6 database tables and fields, see the Alloy Navigator 6 Database Reference Guide. For details on the structure of AD6 database tables and fields, see the Alloy Discovery 6 Database Reference Guide. 3

For instructions, see the Alloy Navigator 6 Suite Installation Guide: Advanced Installation - Installing and Configuring Web Portals > Configuring the Technician Web Portal or Configuring the Self Service Portal. The Technician Web Portal version has a known issue that does not allow technicians to generate reports if the portal is configured for Windows Authentication. The new version fixed this issue. When configuring the Technician Web Portal for Windows authentication, the wizard will display the Technician Web Portal Crystal Reports Settings page prompting you to automatically configure the Crystal Reports component. Keep the Autoconfigure the reporting component check box selected and specify where to create the /CrTemp folder for Crystal Reports temporary files. Then complete the wizard. 7

8 If you have fixed the issue using Alloy Software Knowledge Base article KB Reports generate errors when Technician's Web Portal is configured for Windows authentication, you should still auto-configure the reporting component. This will update your configuration with the latest version. For IIS 5 (Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Server): If you have IIS and SQL Server running on different machines, the wizard will be unable to auto-configure the reporting functionality. In this case, clear the Auto-configure the reporting component check box and proceed with the wizard. 11 6. Start the Automation Server When the upgrade is completed, start the Automation Server on the Automation Server host machine: 1. Run the Alloy Automation Server Manager from the Windows Start menu (Start > All Programs > Alloy Software > Alloy Navigator 6 > Tools > Alloy Automation Server Manager). 2. Log on to your AN6 database. 3. Click Start. 4. Click OK to exit the Alloy Automation Server Manager. What s new in this version Alloy Navigator Main Console and Administrative Settings In addition to the predefined spell checking dictionary for American English, now you can add custom dictionaries for other languages. Added custom dictionaries will be available for checking your spelling in text input fields of the AN6 Main Console and Administrative Settings. When the Full-Text Search is enabled, the new AN6 version allows you to search for exact phrases containing "stop words", i.e. commonly occurring words such as a, is, and the or numbers, using the Advanced Search functionality. The Advanced Search does not abort on those "stop words" and continues searching. In version 6.1.0, discovered installations and license allocations for retired Computers may appear in Tracked Software records and in the Tracked Software grid. The new version fixes the issue; no discovered installations and license allocations for retired Computers are shown in the Tracked Software records and grid. In version 6.1.0, the workflow Triggers of the "On Condition" type run on inactive objects, i.e. objects in "Retired", "Closed", or "Inactive" status, in the same way as on active objects. In the new version, these Triggers do not run on inactive objects. After merging a child Software Product to a parent product in Alloy Discovery 6, AN6 version removes the link to any Software Product from the associated Tracked Software record: neither the child nor the parent product is associated with the Tracked Software after synchronization the Software Catalog with AD6. The new version fixes this issue: now the Tracked Software remains associated with the child Software Product, and you can manually re-associate the Tracked Software with the parent product, if needed. Services After the installation of the Automation Server version on the machine where Automation Server 5 was previously installed, Alloy Navigator 5 Automation Server jobs fail to work. The new version fixes the issue; both AN5 and AN6 Automation Servers can run their jobs on the same machine simultaneously. 11

12 Web Portal During the Advanced Installation of the Web Portal, the Web Portal Configuration Wizard encrypts database connection strings in the web.config configuration files for both the Technician Web Portal and Self Service Portal. In order to simplify evaluating the Web portals, the Evaluation Installation does not use encryption. The Technician Web Portal version hosted on IIS 6 or IIS 7 server does not allow generating any reports. The new version fixes this issue. This concerns both allnew installations of the Technician Web Portal and upgrades from version In version 6.1.0, when some user-defined fields are configured to appear on the General tab, the Technician Web Portal displays them on the Custom Data tab instead. The new version fixes this issue; the user-defined fields are shown on the correct tab. If the Self Service Portal version is configured for Windows authentication with Integrated impersonation, SSP customers are identified on the portal incorrectly: after the successful authentication of the first logged in SSP customer, all other logged in users are identified as the first user. The new version fixes this issue. Now the SSP correctly identifies the persons by their SSP customer accounts with Windows authentication when the portal is configured for Integrated impersonation. When your AN6 license is limited to specific modules, the Technician Web Portal version does not support license limitations at all; all the modules including unused ones are accessible. The new version fixes this issue. Now the Technician Web Portal provides access to Alloy Navigator modules in accordance with the license and hides unavailable modules and objects in the same way that the Main Console does. Alloy Discovery In addition to the predefined spell checking dictionary for American English, you can add custom dictionaries for other languages. The supported format is OpenOffice.org 2.x. Added custom dictionaries will be available for checking your spelling in text input fields of the Main Console and Administrative Settings. Alloy Discovery 6.1 includes the embedded Crystal Reports component by SAP AG and delivers a collection of predefined standard reports. In addition, AD6 includes the Standalone Reporting Module for generating reports from the command line or in a background job. With this module, you can generate any existing AD6 report without starting the Main Console. 12
