7 Introduction Welcome to the Perle 594M the Remote Communications Controller that provides powerful solutions for your AS/400 communication needs! The Perle 594M is an advanced workstation and communication remote controller for the IBM AS/400 environment that facilitates connection of display stations, personal computers (PCs), and printers to an AS/400. About This Guide This guide provides instructions for installing the 594M software and accessing the on-line documentation. The on-line documentation provides details on the hardware installation, configuration and use of the 594M Controller. System Requirements The 594M Utility program has 3 modes of installation. The requirements are different for each of these modes. Stand-alone mode This mode allows you to run the 594M Utility without any connection to the 594M. The requirements are: A computer with a 486, Pentium or higher processor Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT MB of RAM CD-ROM drive 11 MB Hard Drive space for 594M software Additional 20 MB Hard Drive space for on-line documentation Additional 30 MB Hard Drive space for Acrobat Reader. 8 Introduction Serial Connection If you plan to connect to the 594M controller with the serial connection, then the following is also required: An RS-232 serial port which supports the UART mode. APPC Connection If you plan to connect to the 594M locally through the Twinaxial interface, or remotely through the AS/400 APPN network, then the following is also required: IBM Client Access/400 for DOS with Extended Memory Token-Ring, Ethernet or Twinaxial Interface card PC must be restarted in MS-DOS mode with at least 525 KB of conventional memory. 9 Installing the Perle 594M Software This section explains how to install and uninstall the 594M Utility software and how to access the on-line documentation. Installation Procedure 1. Start Windows and make sure there are no other applications running. 2. Insert the Perle 594M CD-ROM disc into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Select Run from the Start menu. 4. Enter d:\setup in the Run dialog window (where d: is the CD-ROM drive letter) and click OK. 5. The Language Selection dialog box should appear. The language selected will be used for the installation screens and will also determine the language version of the 594M Utility program and on-line documentation files that will be installed. Select the desired language and click Next. 6. Choose a destination hard drive and directory for the 594M software. Note: If you are going to use the APPC connection option to connect to the 594M, then do NOT change the default directory name. As well, the hard drive chosen should be the same hard drive on which the Client Access/400 for DOS will be installed. Click Next. 7. Select which components you would like to install by setting the appropriate check boxes then click Next. The choices are: Perle 594M software This includes the 594M controller software, the extended diagnostics software, and the 594M Utility program. The 594M Utility is used to install the software on the 594M controller, create a configuration file for the controller and monitor the status of the controller. On-line documentation files These manuals are in both PDF and HTML format. See On-line Documentation below to see how to access these files. Acrobat Reader Installer This is Adobe s Acrobat Reader Installation program. The Acrobat Reader will allow you to read the PDF versions of the on-line manuals. Perle 594M Getting Started 3

10 Installing the Perle 594M Software 8. Select how the 594M Utility program should be installed then click Next. The choices are: Stand-alone This mode allows you to run the 594M Utility without any connection to the 594M. It is used to create and review configuration files for the 594M which are stored on the PC hard drive. Serial Connection This mode allows the 594M Utility to communicate with the 594M Controller through a connection between a serial port on the PC and the Utility Serial Port on the 594M. Note: This connection is required when doing a first time install of a 594M. It is used to download the system software (or firmware) to the flash memory on the controller. Note: The serial connection will optionally modify the system or registry files or you may perform the changes manually. For details on these modification see Appendix A:. APPC Connection The 594M Utility will use the Client Access/400 for DOS to communicate to the 594M locally through the twinaxial interface or remotely through an AS/400 network using the APPC protocol. The remote connection allows configuration changes or software updates to controllers at branch offices to be administered from a central location. 9. If the Serial Connection option was chosen, then enter a COM Port number that the 594M Utility program will use. Valid entries are 1-4. Default value is 1. Click Next. 10. If the APPC Connection option was chosen, then an Interface dialog screen will appear. Select which interface card on the PC will be used for communication and enter values for the interface parameters if the default values are incorrect Twinaxial Station Address - Station address of the PC. Default value is 5. Valid entries are 0-6. Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN Address - This is the LAN (or MAC) address of the LAN interface on the Adjacent Link Station (ALS) to which the PC will communicate. The LAN address is 12 digits long and valid entries are 0-9 and A-F. This is a required parameter and has no default value. SAP - This is the Service Access Point of the ALS LAN interface. The default value is 04. Valid entries are 04-FC (hexadecimal) in multiples of Follow the remaining prompts to complete the installation. 4 Perle 594M Getting Started

11 Installing the Perle 594M Software Uninstalling 594M Utility 1. Exit the 594M Utility Program 2. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Settings Control Panel and then double-click on Add/Remove Program 3. Select Perle 594M Utility from the program list 4. Click Add/Remove and follow the on-screen instructions until the program files have been removed. If any configuration files have been created and stored in the 594M Utility directory, these files and the directory will not be removed. Running 594M Utility The 594M Utility runs differently depending on the mode in which it was installed. Please refer to the on-line manual 594M User s Guide for details. Perle 594M Getting Started 5

12 Installing the Perle 594M Software On-line Documentation Using Acrobat Perle 594M has three on-line documents that you can both view and print using the Acrobat Reader program: 594M User s Guide 594 Reference Guide 594M Diagnostic Guide If you do not have Acrobat Reader on your system, you can install it from the Perle 594M program group. To install Acrobat Reader: 1. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Programs Perle 594M Acrobat Reader Installer. The Acrobat Reader Installer splash screen will display. 2. Click Accept. Acrobat Reader Installer will display the target directory dialog box. 3. Select a new target directory or accept the default directory and click Install. 4. Follow the instructions in the remaining prompts. A dialog box will indicate when the installation in complete. To view an on-line document: 1. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Programs Perle 594M PDF <document>. Acrobat will display the selected document. 2. Click on the Table of Contents button in the Acrobat Reader toolbar. The table of contents for the on-line document is displayed. 3. Click on a topic in the table of contents to view the topic. 4. Click on the browse buttons in the Acrobat Reader toolbar to browse from page to page, return to a previous page, or go to the beginning or end of the document. To print an on-line document: 1. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Programs Perle 594M PDF <document>. Acrobat will display the selected document. 2. From the Acrobat Reader menu bar, choose File Print. The Print dialog box is displayed. 3. Click OK to print the on-line document. 6 Perle 594M Getting Started

13 Using a Web Browser Installing the Perle 594M Software Perle 594M has three on-line documents stored in HTML format. These documents can be viewed by using a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. The documents are: 594M User s Guide 594 Reference Guide 594M Diagnostic Guide To view an on-line document: 1. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Programs Perle 594M HTML <document>. The browser will display the Table of Contents for the selected document 2. Click on a topic in the Table of Contents. The browser will load the file containing the selected topic and display it. 3. Use the browser s scroll bar, Back and Forward buttons, and the documents hypertext links to navigate through the document. To print an on-line document: 1. From the Windows Task Bar choose Start Programs Perle 594M HTML <document>. The browser will display the Table of Contents for the selected document. 2. Click on a topic in the Table of Contents. The browser will load the file containing the selected topic and display it. 3. From the web browser menu bar, choose File Print. The Print dialog box is displayed. 4. 15 Appendix A: Serial Install System Changes This appendix explains the changes that are made to system files or registries during installation of the 594M in serial mode. It also explains how to make the changes manually if you chose not to have them made automatically during installation. Windows 95/98 1. The file wcscdrv.386 was copied to specified 594M directory during installation. Example: c:\594up\wcsccdrv Add the following lines to the [386Enh] section of the system.ini. Windows NT WCSCMaxPorts = 4 WCSCInBufLen = 2048 WCSCOutBufLen = 2048 WCSCInBufHigh = 1792 WCSCInBufLow = 256 device=c:\594up\wcsccdrv.386 The above key words are explained in the Windows NT section. 1. The file wcsccdrv.sys was copied to <Drive>:\<NT_DIR>\system32\drivers during installation Example: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\wcsccdrv.sys 2. 17 Appendix A: Serial Install System Changes The keys DisplayName, ErrorControl, ImagePath, Start, and Type, are specific to Windows NT loading of kernel device drivers. The keys WCSCMaxPorts, WCSCInBufLen, WCSCOutBufLen, WCSCInBufHigh, and WCSCInBufLow are specific to wcsccdrv.sys. Complete information on these keys can be found in the Windows NT Resource Guide. We will describe them here for completeness. DisplayName ErrorControl ImagePath Start This is the string that will appear for his device in the Service Control Manager(the dialog box you get when you select Devices from the Control Panel). Specifies the behavior of the NT loader if an error occurs while loading the device. 0x0 Log error and ignore. Boot process continues. 0x1 Log error and display a message box. 0x2 Log error and reboot with last known good configuration. 0x3 Log error and fail if already using last known good configuration. Specifies the fully qualified path of the driver's image file. If this value is not specified, the default path is NT_root\system32\Drivers\DriverName.sys, where DriverName is the name of the driver's Services key(e.g., wcsccdrv). Specifies when to start the driver. One of the following is specified: 0x2 0x3 Indicates a driver started by the Service Control Manager during system startup. Indicates a driver started on demand, by the Service Control Manager. Type WCSCMaxPorts WCSCInBufLen Specifies the type of driver. Wcsccdrv.sys must use 0x1 for kernel driver. This is the maximum amount of serial ports that may be opened at the same time. This is the size of the input serial communication buffer that will be used for each opened port. If you loose characters during data reception this value may be increased. WCSCOutBufLen This is the size of the output serial communication buffer that will be used for each opened port. This value may be increased to enhance transmission speeds. WCSCInBufHigh This is the character count at which the kernel driver will either lower RTS, lower DTR, or send an XOFF to indicate that the remote should stop sending data. This value only has meaning if flow control is desired. WCSCInBufLow This is the character count at which the kernel driver will either raise RTS, raise DTR, or send an XON to indicate that the remote should start sending data again.
