NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 5 Chapter 1: INTRODUCING NETVAULT: BACKUP BUILT-IN PLUGINS This chapter provides an overview of the NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins. The information in this chapter is organized into the following topics: NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins At a Glance About this Document Target Audience Recommended Additional Reading Technical Support Documentation Updates NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins At a Glance A standard installation of NetVault: Backup (NVBU) Server and Heterogeneous Client software includes the following built-in plugins: File System Plugin The File System Plugin increases confidence in the recoverability of critical file system data, and eliminates the need of writing complex backup and recovery scripts. The plugin offers a centralized console to set up, configure and create flexible backup policies that account for multiple recovery scenarios. Support for Full, Incremental and Differential Backup types allows you to choose a preferred strategy, while use of Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) guarantees consistent backups. Granular control over restores reduces downtime and increases business continuity, allowing you to recover data quickly and reliably with minimal interaction. Consolidate Incremental Backups The Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin eliminates the need to run frequent Full Backups, allowing you to create a composite saveset for Full and Incremental Backups without actually performing a Full Backup. This composite saveset then serves as the base for future Incremental Backups. For example, after an initial Full Backup, you can schedule Incremental or Differential Backups from Monday to Friday, and schedule a consolidation job on Saturday which will be used as the base for next week's Incremental or Differential Backups. The Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin does not

6 Chapter 1 Introducing NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins actually backup the data; it just creates a composite set from the existing savesets. Data Copy Plugin The Data Copy Plugin facilitates off site storage and disk staging, allowing you to schedule jobs for copying or migrating backups at convenient off peak hours, and thereby shrink your backup windows. You can run a data copy job independently or include it in a backup policy for copying or migrating backups on a regular basis. The Data Copy Plugin does not actually backup the data; it just creates a copy of an existing saveset. NVBU Databases Plugin The NetVault Databases Plugin protects your NVBU Server, allowing you to backup critical system data which is essential to recover a functional NVBU Server in the event of a system failure. Raw Device Plugin The Raw Device Plugin protects physical disks, allowing you to backup and recover Master Boot Record (MBR), system partitions and individual user partitions from an intuitive GUI without any scripting About this Document This guide describes how to use the NVBU Built-in Plugins. It provides comprehensive information on the Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin, Data Copy Plugin, NetVault Databases Plugin, and Raw Device Plugin. This guide does not provide usage information for the File System Plugin. For details on the File System Plugin, refer to the NetVault: Backup File System Plugin User s Guide Target Audience This guide is intended for Backup Administrators and other technical personnel who are responsible for designing and implementing a backup strategy for the organization. 9 NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 9 Chapter 2: USING CONSOLIDATE INCREMENTAL BACKUPS PLUGIN This chapter describes how to use the Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin. The information in this chapter is organized into the following topics: Available Backup Consolidation Methods Consolidating Incremental Backups Using the Backup Job Method Selecting Data for a Backup Setting Backup Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Submitting a Job from NVBU Console Submitting a Job from NVBU Administrator on Mac OS X Consolidating Incremental Backups Using the Backup Set Method Creating a Backup Consolidation Policy Restoring a Consolidated Saveset Available Backup Consolidation Methods The Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin provides the following methods for consolidation of Incremental Backups performed by the File System Plugin: Backup Job The Backup Job method allows you to consolidate Incremental Backups up to a particular backup job. This method is recommended when you want to run an ad-hoc consolidation job. For example, prior to changing your backup schedule, or reusing media containing Incremental Backups, or creating an archive. Backup Set The Backup Set method allows you to consolidate all the incrementals up to the last available saveset in a backup sequence. This method can only be used when the backups are performed using a Selection Set. The Backup Set method is recommended when you want to run regular consolidation jobs. A backup consolidation policy is created using this method.

10 Chapter 2 Using Consolidate Incremental Backups Plugin Important: BakBone recommends disabling the Enable Deduplication option for Incremental Backups that will be consolidated with the Consolidated Incremental Backup Plugin to NVSD. This will eliminate unnecessary overhead of rehydrating the deduplicated Incremental Backups during the consolidation process while enabling the resulting Consolidated Full Backup to still be deduplicated Consolidating Incremental Backups Using the Backup Job Method The procedure for consolidating Incremental Backups using the Backup Job method can be divided into the following steps: Selecting Data for a Backup Setting Backup Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Important: The backup consolidation jobs can only be defined and submitted from the NVBU Server Selecting Data for a Backup To select the data for a backup, perform the following steps: 1. 17 NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 17 Chapter 3: USING DATA COPY PLUGIN This chapter describes how to use the Data Copy Plugin. The information in this chapter is organized into the following topics: Available Data Copy Methods Creating Data Copies Using the Backup Job Method Selecting Data for a Backup Selecting the Data Copy Type Configuring the Data Copy Plugin Backup Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Submitting a Job From NVBU Console Submitting a Job From NVBU Administrator on Mac OS X Creating Data Copies Using the Backup Sets Method Creating a Data Copy Policy Restoring a Data Copy Available Data Copy Methods The Data Copy Plugin provides the following methods for creating copies of backup savesets: Backup Job The Backup Job method allows you to create a copy of a particular saveset. This method is recommended when you want to run an ad-hoc copy job to copy a saveset. Backup Set The Backup Set method allows you to copy the latest saveset in a backup sequence. This method can only be used when the backups are performed using a Selection Set. The Backup Set method is recommended when you want to run regular Data Copy jobs. A Data Copy policy is created using this method.

18 Chapter 3 Using Data Copy Plugin Creating Data Copies Using the Backup Job Method The procedure for copying a selected saveset set using the Backups method can be divided into the following steps: Selecting Data for a Backup Selecting the Data Copy Type Configuring the Data Copy Plugin Backup Options Finalizing and Submitting a Job Important: The Data Copy jobs can only be defined and submitted from the NVBU Server Selecting Data for a Backup To create a copy of the selected saveset, perform the following steps: 1. Open the backup window as described below: NVBU Console Start NVBU Console. Click Backup on the toolbar or Large Buttons panel to open the NVBU Backup window. Locate Data Copy in the list of plugins and open this node to display the following nodes:

NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 19 Figure 3-1: Data selection for Backup Job method Backups Backup Sets 4. Open the Backups node. 5. Open the plugin node that was used to generate the saveset. 6. Select the saveset that you want to copy or migrate Setting Backup Options This step includes the following tasks: Selecting the Data Copy Type Configuring the Data Copy Plugin Backup Options a Selecting the Data Copy Type Click the Backup Options tab. Under Data Copy, select one of the following options:

20 Chapter 3 Using Data Copy Plugin Figure 3-2: Backup Options for Data Copy Plugin Copy a Full Backup to Produce a New Independent Copy of the Data This copy type is recommended when you want to create a copy for offsite storage. It removes the links between the Full and Incremental Backups, and allows you to set a new retention period for the copy. It can only be used for Full Backups. Data Copying a backup breaks the backup into segments and copies the segments onto the targeted backup device. During restore, NVBU only restores the primary copy or the secondary copy. Backup segments from the primary and the secondary are not interchangeable. This enables the ability to encrypt the Data Copy or the secondary copy, while the primary copy remains unencrypted. Use Saveset Name from Original Backup By default, the Data Copy Plugin assigns a new saveset name to an independent copy. This name is derived from the job title. To override this default setting and use the original saveset s name for the copy, select the Use Saveset Name from Original Backup check box.

NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 21 Duplicate a Backup This copy type is recommended when you want to migrate the saveset to another media. The savesets copied in this manner share the original saveset s name and reference. It can be used to copy both Full and Incremental Backups. Duplicating a backup breaks the copy into segments and stores them on the backup device. During restore, segments from the primary copy and the secondary copy are interchangeable. This makes it impossible to unencypt the primary backup and encrypt the secondary copy because it is not possible to mix unencrypted segments with encrypted segments during restore. The copies of Incremental Backups will require the Original Full Backup during restore. The restore window will display only one saveset for the original and the copy. Allow Streams to Share Media In conjunction with this option, you can select the Allow Streams to Share Media check box to convert multiple data streams into a sequential data stream during data copy and write it to the same media. It reduces the number of media items required for data copy. Otherwise, each stream is written to a separate media b Configuring the Data Copy Plugin Backup Options On the Backup Options tab, configure the following parameters: Migrate To migrate the data instead of creating an additional copy, select the Migrate check box. On completion of the job, the Data Copy Plugin deletes the saveset information for the original backup. Backup Life To set the retention period for the copy, configure the following parameters under Backup Life. Use Originals Life To use the original saveset s retention period, select Use Originals Life. Use Backup Life on Advanced Options tab To set a different retention period for the copy, select Use Backup Life on Advanced Options tab. Then, set the retention period on the Advanced Options tab. For details on configuring these options, refer to the NetVault: Backup Administrator s Guide. Run Data Copy On By default the data copy job runs on the NVBU Server. To run the job on another Client, select the Client in the Run Data Copy On list.

22 Chapter 3 Using Data Copy Plugin Finalizing and Submitting a Job This section describes the procedures for finalizing and submitting a job from NVBU Console and NVBU Administrator on Mac OS. Important: The Enable Encryption option on the Advanced Options tab only works with the Copy a Full Backup to Produce a New Independent Copy of the Data Data Copy Method. If the original saveset is encrypted, Data Copy will automatically create an encrypted saveset whether the Enable Encryption check box is selected or not. Therefore, this option is only useful when you want to create an encrypted copy of an unencrypted original saveset. Encrypted savesets will not be encrypted again if the Enable Encryption check box is selected for a copy. For restoring data from such copies, you must use the original saveset's Encryption Key a b Submitting a Job From NVBU Console To finalize and submit a backup job from NVBU Console, perform the following steps. 1. Click the Schedule, Source, Target and Advanced Options tabs, and configure the required options. These options are common to all NVBU plugins. For details on configuring these options, refer to the NetVault: Backup Administrator s Guide. 2. Enter a title for the job in the Job Title box at the top right corner of the NVBU Backup window. Specify a detailed title that allows you to easily identify the job for monitoring its progress or restoring data. 3. Click Submit on the toolbar. Alternatively, on the Accept menu, click Submit Backup. To monitor the job progress and view the logs, open the NVBU Jobs and the NVBU Logs windows, respectively. For details on these functions, refer to the NetVault: Backup Administrator s Guide. 24 24 Chapter 3 Using Data Copy Plugin Figure 3-3: Data selection for Backup Set method Backups Backup Sets 4. Open the Backup Sets node. 5. Open the plugin node that was used to generate the saveset. 6. Select the selection set. 7. Select the Data Copy Type. For details, refer to Selecting the Data Copy Type on page Under Copy Type, select the saveset type: Automatically Get a Set's Last Full Backup Option Select this option to copy the last Full Backup performed using the chosen selection set. This option can be used if your backup strategy only comprises Full Backups, or you want to make a copy of only Full Backups. Note: The Automatically Get a Set's Last Full Backup Option is not compatible with the backups performed using NetWare Thin Client Plugin. The Data Copy Plugin will target the last backup, whether Full or Incremental. The Data Copy plugin cannot distinguish between the NDMP Level 0 Full Backup and Levels 1 9 Incremental Backups. An NDMP backup of any level appears as Full Backup to the Data Copy plugin. So, if you are trying to make a copy of the latest saveset, and you have selected Copy a Full Backup to Produce a New Independent Copy of the Data and Automatically Get a Set's Last Full Backup options, the Data Copy plugin will still make a copy of the last backup (of any level), and not the Level 0 backup performed using the chosen selection set.

NetVault: Backup Built-in Plugins User s Guide 25 Use a Set s Most Recent Job Regardless of Type Option Select this option to copy the last saveset, regardless of whether if it was a Full or an Incremental Backup. This option is recommended when your backup strategy comprises Full and Incremental Backups and you want to make copies on a regular basis. 9. Configure the backup options.
