This Tech Note provides step-by-step procedures to install SQL Server 2008 Express on a 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System.

Topic#: Created: July 2012 Introduction This Tech Note provides step-by-step procedures to install SQL Server 2008 Express on a 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System. Wonderware Historian Server version 10.0 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Vista SP2 (Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise) Operating System editions. However, at the time of its release, Historian Server 10.0 only supports the 32-bit version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and Installing SQL Server 2008 Express 32-bit is supported. Note: This Tech Note shows installing SQL Server 2008 Express on a 32-bit system. Application Versions Wonderware Historian 10 and later Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1 (32- and 64-bit) Assumptions This Tech Note assumes the following: SQL Server 2008 Express is installed on the same machine as Historian. No Firewall configuration is necessary. Installation Steps 1. Go to to download Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express SP1. 2. Click on the SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe link and either save it to the machine, or click Run. 3. Click the New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation install option (Figure 1 below).

3 FIGure 2: COMpleteD Setup SuppOrt Rules 5. Click OK, then click Next. The Product Key Setup Wizard appears (Figure 3 below).

4 FIGure: 3 EMBeDDeD PrODuct KeY 6. Click Next to automatically enable the embedded product key. 7. When the License Terms Wizard appears, click I accept the license terms and click Next (Figure 4 below).

5 FIGure 4: Accept LIcense TerMs 8. When the Setup Support Files Wizard appears, click Install (Figure 5 below).

6 FIGure 5: SuppOrt FIles InstAllAtIOn 9. Make sure all the rules have passed. The Windows Firewall warning (Figure 6 below) is typically a notification that the firewall is ON.

7 FIGure 6: COMpleteD Setup SuppOrt Rules 10. Click Next. 11. Select the features in Figure 7 (below) and click Next. Your selected features appear in the Feature Selection Wizard (Figure 7 below).

8 FIGure 7: SelecteD FeAtures 12. Click Next. 13. When you get to Instance Configuration, change the named instance to MSSQLSERVER. The default value of SQLExpress is not supported by Historian Server (Figures 8-9 below).

On the Database Engine Configuration panel, click the Mixed Mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows Authentication) option in the Account Provisioning tab (Figure 13 below). Note: Mixed Mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication) is recommended but optional. 14. Type a password for the built-in SQL System Administrator account (sa). Configure the sa-level password with a strong password string for security purposes. 15. Click Add to add any users who you want to have administrator rights when using Windows authentication. Leave the other tabs at their default settings.

19 FIGure 18: InstAll COMplete Note: TCP/IP must be enabled in SQL Server Configuration Manager for a successful connection to Historian Server. To enable TCP/IP 1. Click on Windows Start/All Programs/Microsoft SQL Server 2008/Configuration Tools/Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Manager. 2. Expand the SQL Server Network Configuration (64-bit). 3. Click Protocols for MSSQLSERVER.

20 4. Right-click TCP/IP and click Enable (Figure 19 below). FIGure 19: EnABle TCP/IP In the SQL Server COnfIGurAtIOn MAnAGer Download SQL Express Management Studio Although it is not necessary to have SQL Server 2008 Management Studio installed for Historian Server to function, you may want it installed on the Historian node, or use it from another node to Manage your Historian SQL Server Database.
