1 TASKBAR Start Taskbar Notification Area Note the absence of the Quick Launch. Right click on the blank area of the taskbar for a menu Then click Properties TASKBAR PROPERTIES Here you can: Lock/unlock Taskbar Auto hide Taskbar Use/not use Small Icons. This button lets you move Taskbar when locked! Taskbar buttons options Aero Peek WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 1

2 To see Taskbar Button options, open First File and Proposed Elements in the Class Lessons folder. Here they are on the desktop. At home you need to get them from your flash drive, you do have it, right? Always combine, hide labels Taskbar Button Options: Combine when Taskbar is full (this is on an uncluttered taskbar) On a busy desktop, display will be as above. 3 Aero Peek controls how the control in the lower right corner of the desktop works Aero Peek Checked, drag mouse to control shows outline of windows Click to clear desktop. Not checked, and nothing happens when you drag mouse over the control until you click on it and desktop is cleared. This Taskbar dialog can also be opened by right clicking on the START Menu, click on Properties selected the TASKBAR TAB. You can also access this dialog from the CONTROL PANEL. (Remember, always click APPLY if you have made any changes, BEFORE you go to a different tab). WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 3

4 Move the Taskbar Right-Click a blank area of the Taskbar for a menu. Check to see if there is a check before Lock the Taskbar. Remove the Check mark. Now it will be possible to move the Taskbar. Place the Pointer on a blank area of the Taskbar. Hold down the left mouse button and drag and drop the taskbar to where you want it located, (top of the Screen, bottom of the Screen, Left or Right side of the Screen are the choices.) Resizing the Taskbar With the Taskbar located at the bottom of the screen. Place the pointer on the top edge of the Taskbar to find the Black Twoheaded arrow. Hold down the left mouse button and drag upward. The taskbar will increase in depth. What Happened to Quick Launch? It s really in Taskbar. Notice that Word and IE are outlined showing they are running. Clicking on other programs launches them (Quick Launch) WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 4

5 When the Taskbar becomes filled, an up/down arrow appears Click on down arrow to see next row of Taskbar Too Many Taskbar Icons? PIN PIN UNPIN to Taskbar In Start Menu, locate Wordpad Right Click on Wordpad Click on Pin to Taskbar UNPIN Right Click on Icon in Taskbar Click on Unpin this program from Taskbar Jump Lists To setup a Jump Lists demonstration, start Wordpad and open the files First File, Let s Face It and Proposed Element in the C101 Class Lessons Folder (on the Desktop of Club Computers or from you Flash Drive at home. 6 Start Menu Jump Lists are available at the arrows to the right of programs in the Start Menu Jump Lists appear in two Places Drag mouse over arrow to right of Wordpad Then click on First File and Wordpad will open selected file Taskbar Right click on Worpad Taskbar Icon Win7 shows recent files Click on Let s Face It and Wordpad opens that file Pinning to Jump List Drag mouse over a file in either of above methods Then click on Push Button to pin to the Jump List WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 6

8 Change what Icons are displayed Right Click on open area in Desktop Click on Personalization Click on change desktop icons Check or uncheck Icons as desired THE NOTIFICATION AREA These are programs that are running in the background of the PC. This arrow points to more programs. Left click to see them. WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 8

9 Note: Your computer performance is adversely affected by excess programs in the Notification Area. Your computer is often stuffed with Microsoft and vendor programs. However be sure you know what you are deleting. As you install programs, they sometimes place Icons here. You can change how these are display by clicking on Customize in above picture Click on Down arrow for the program you wish to change Changing Notification Icons The Clock and Volume control can also be opened and adjusted from the Control Panel. 10 User Account Control Even though you log on with an account that has administrator rights, you only run as a power user. When administrative rights are required you are prompted to provide them. In Vista this setting was an all or nothing approach. Win 7 provides 4 levels. Recommend that you set yours at Level 2. Here is how. Click on Start Click on Control Panel Click on User Accounts Click on Change User Account Control setting Recommend you set this at the Win7 default. WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 10

11 THE CLOCK Windows uses the date and time settings to identify when files are created or modified. The time stored is really in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This is the time just outside London England. No Daylight Savings Time either. Change the Computer s Date and Time In Notification Area, Click on time Click on Change date and time settings Here you can change time zone used to display time. Note, this does not change the GMT time on the file, only the time zone used to display the GMT. Click here to change the date and time here as show next: WIN7 OPERATING SYSTEM Page II - 11

13 VOLUME CONTROL Click on Volume control in Notification Area The Volume Control will open and allow you to select the Volume that is comfortable for you. Click here to mute the speakers Click on Mixer to adjust various sounds: Here you can adjust relative volume of Win 7 s sounds. Items displayed depend on applications running. 14 Explore your Computer Click on Computer on the right side of the Start Menu Here is where you can find out how many GB s (gigabytes) your C Hard Drive has and how much free space is available.
