IF after reading the inf AutRun gives yu abut the running item, yu still are nt sure what it des, rightclick the item and click Ggle n the drp dwn list. Ggle will take yu t a site that explains what that particular items des. T learn mre abut this nifty prgram, and t dwnlad it free click here: Click here: Sysinternals Freeware - Autruns Create a subflder and name it AutRuns in yur C:\Prgrams flder. During the dwnlad prcess, click SAVE instead f RUN and lcate the AutRuns flder. Click SAVE. The zipped file will be dwnladed t yur AutRuns flder. Rightclick Start, click Explre and scrll dwn the left clumn t lcate the C:\Prgrams flder. Click the + beside Prgrams and yu will see the Autruns subflder. Dubleclick the Autruns flder. Then click t unzip and extract the autruns files t the same Autruns flder. Click the file with the? t read abut Autruns. Then click the Autruns file t bring up the list f yur running prgrams. Uncheck thse that yu d nt need t have running..when yu restart yur cmputer and smething isn't wrking, yu can g back and check that item again. Its a great tl fr finding spyware and manually shutting it ff. It is a gd idea t create a New Restre Pint befre using Autruns. Click Start...All Prgrams...Accessries...System Infrmatin...System Restre. Place the dt in Create Restre Pint and click Next. Name it Befre Autruns. The date will be autmatically entered. Click the SELECTIVE STARTUP (instead f NORMAL STARTUP) 3. Click t place a check in the bttm bx, the LOAD ITEMS at startup. 4. Click the STARTUP tab. 5. Remve all checks frm bxes fund here, except Sys.tray and ANY bxes related t yur firewall (if yu have ne) and yur anti-virus prgram,e.g. VShield,etc that run McAfee. Or any line that has NORTON S in it indicating it s a Nrtn s antivirus prgram file. 6. Click APPLY and OK 7. Restart yur cmputer. Nw at the right hand end f the task bar yu shuld nly see the sund icn, the antivirus icn and yur firewall icn. Nte: If yu're running win98 yu can drag any desktp icn dwn nt the left end f the task bar s they will always be visible when yu need that prgram. Yu can even create a shrtcut fr the desktp itself and drag it dwn, s if yu need t g t the desktp t click a prgram yu can d s. ******************************************************** MSCONFIG WIN98, ME, XP Hewlett Packard is pleased t prvide the fllwing dcumentatin via . This dcument applies t Micrsft(R) Windws 98, Me, and XP. The Micrsft System Cnfiguratin (Mscnfig) tl is a Micrsft sftware applicatin used t prevent ther sftware applicatins frm pening with Windws. This dcument explains hw t use Mscnfig t reslve prblems with the cmputer. Using Mscnfig Mscnfig prevents Windws frm using sftware applicatins and settings. Use the fllwing steps t prevent all sftware prgrams frm autmatically pening when Windws starts:

3 CAUTION: The fllwing steps are used t prevent all startup items frm pening including antivirus sftware and ther sftware that may prvide imprtant functins. Only use these steps fr trubleshting purpses. 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type the fllwing int the Open field: mscnfig 3. Click OK. A System Cnfiguratin Utility pens. 4. Fr Windws 98 and ME, select Selective Startup n the General tab, and remve the checkmark next t Lad startup grup items. 5. Fr Windws 98, remve the checkmarks next t Cnfig.sys and Autexec.bat. NOTE: Many sftware drivers and antivirus sftware depend n Cnfig.sys and Autexec.bat in rder t wrk. If yu experience prblems after cmpleting these steps, perfrm the steps again replacing the checkmarks next t Cnfig.sys and Autexec.bat. 6. Fr Windws 98 and ME, click the WIN.INI tab, click the plus sign (+) next t the windws flder, and remve the checkmarks next t lad= and run=. 7. Fr Windws XP, remve the checkmark next t Lad Startup Items. 8. Fr Windws XP, click the Services tab, select Hide all Micrsft services, and remve the checkmarks next t all the items in the list. 9. When finished, click OK. 10. Restart the cmputer fr the changes t take effect. After the cmputer restarts, a message abut using Mscnfig shuld appear. 11. T cntinue using Mscnfig, click OK and then clse the System Cnfiguratin windw (d nt restart the cmputer). T prevent the pp-up message frm appearing again, place a checkmark next t Dn't shw this message again, and then click OK. NOTE: Once yu have finished trubleshting an issue, repeat these steps again, replacing the checkmarks, t allw startup prgrams and service t start with Windws again. Explanatin f the System Cnfiguratin tabs The fllwing list describes the tabs and the items listed inside the tabs in the System Cnfiguratin Utility windw. General Use the General tab t prevent entire types f sftware applicatins frm pening with Windws. The fllwing selectins are n the General tab: Nrmal startup. This setting instructs Windws t pen all sftware applicatins that are nrmally scheduled t start with Windws Diagnstic startup. This setting prvides a cmmand when Windws pens. Each sftware applicatin scheduled t start with Windws is displayed, ne at a

4 time. Type a Y t pen the listed sftware applicatin r type an N t prevent the listed sftware applicatin frm pening. Selective startup. Use this setting t prevent sftware applicatins f a certain type frm starting. Once a specific sftware applicatin type under Selective startup is selected, then all sftware applicatins f that type will pen with Windws. Fr example, select Lad startup items t pen all items listed n the Startup tab. Cnfig.sys (Windws 98 nly) This tab represents items listed inside the system cnfiguratin file. The system cnfiguratin file is respnsible fr pening sftware applicatins that set up and cmmunicate with hardware cmpnents. Autexec.bat (Windws 98 nly) This tab represents items listed inside the autmatically-executed batch file (autexec). The autexec file is respnsible fr pening DOS sftware applicatins befre Windws pens. Mst f the items inside the autexec file are safe t prevent frm pening with windws. System.ini This tab represents items listed inside the system infrmatin file. The system.ini file is respnsible fr prviding Windws with the fllwing infrmatin: [Bt] - Prvides windws with a list f files that pens when Windws pens. Mst files are needed fr Windws t perate crrectly, such as the pwer driver, Windws sund driver, and Windws muse driver. D nt remve the check mark next t any item that cntains a Windws flag icn next t the listing. descriptin] - The names and settings f items, usually hardware, that are used by Windws. These settings shuld nt be changed. [386Enh] - Describes the file types that Windws will use fr certain functins. D nt remve the check mark next t any item that cntains a Windws flag icn next t the listing. Sme sftware applicatins create a device= listing that causes cmmunicatin prblems with printers, external strage devices, scanners, and cameras. [drivers] and [drivers32] - Prvides Windws the files fr audi and vide frmats. D nt remve the check mark next t any item that cntains a Windws flag icn next t the listing. The ther items in this list set up the system envirnment. Win.ini This tab represents items listed inside the Windws infrmatin file. The win.ini file is respnsible fr prviding Windws with the fllwing infrmatin: [Windws] - Sftware applicatins listed after lad= r run= will autmatically pen with Windws. Remve the check mark t prevent the listed items frm pening.

5 [Desktp] - Cntains settings fr the Windws Desktp. D nt disable Desktp. Instead, set the Windws Desktp theme t Nne frm Display Settings. [Cmpatibility] - Cntains settings used by Windws t make certain sftware applicatins cmpatible with Windws. D nt disable. Other items are settings set up the Windws envirnment. Bt.ini (Windws XP) This tab displays the bt.ini file used t bt Windws. Changes t hw Windws starts can be made here. Services (Windws XP) The Services tab lists the prgrams that start with Windws, r are run peridically by Windws. Startup This tab represents sftware applicatins that pen autmatically after Windws pens. Disable individual sftware applicatins by remving the check mark next t the name and path.
