1 Software Announcement November 13, 2001 IBM Cluster Systems Management for Linux Now Available on IBM Cluster 1300 Running Linux OS Overview Cluster Systems Management (CSM) for Linux provides a distributed system-management solution for machines, or nodes, that are running the Linux operating system. CSM is an integral part of the IBM Cluster 1300 platform for deploying Linux applications requiring a cluster. With this software, an administrator can easily set up and maintain a Linux cluster by using functions like automated set-up, hardware control, monitoring, and configuration file management. Some of the concepts and software are derived from IBM Parallel System Support Programs for AIX (PSSP). Scaling for the November release is up to 128 managed nodes. Specifically, within the cluster, you can: Add, remove, change, or list nodes (with persistent configuration information displayed about each node in the list) Run remote commands across nodes or node groups in the cluster Gather responses from the above commands Monitor nodes and applications on whether they are active Monitor CPU, memory, and system utilization Run automated responses when events occur in the cluster Configuration File Manager is provided for synchronization of files across multiple nodes. A single management server is the control point for the CSM cluster. Software maintenance for 12 months from date of acquisition is included with the license of the CSM licensed product. The general availability refresh offers the following functions: The capability of complete installation of the Red Hat Linux operating system and the CSM code to each member of a cluster. The Distributed Command Execution Manager (DCEM) provides a graphical user interface (GUI) which allows you to run a command or script on multiple distributed machines on a network at the same time. 2 Description Cluster Systems Management (CSM) for Linux is a powerful set of software included as part of the IBM Cluster 1300 solution which can perform the following tasks: Setting Up CSM for Linux The Cluster Systems Management for Linux Planning and Installation Guide provides a simple process for installing and configuring IBM CSM for Linux. This process allows you to: Install IBM RSCT 1 and IBM CSM code on the management server Automatically add nodes to the cluster during the installation process Install and configure RSCT and IBM CSM on all nodes in a cluster from a single management server 1 Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) provides the capability for an administrator to monitor system resources, including file systems, programs, processors, adapters, and kernel information. These resources can be monitored around the clock and automatic responses can be run if resource values reach certain levels or thresholds. Managing Node and Node-Group Information The distributed management server provides a set of commands for managing nodes. It stores information about nodes in a central repository, and it defines static and dynamic node groups. These definitions are then accessible to the configuration file manager (cfm) command for configuration file management, the distributed shell (dsh) command for running shell commands remotely, for hardware control, and for monitoring the cluster by using the Event Response subsystem (ERRM). Thus, a node group is defined in only one place and is then accessible for use by other functions. Persistent information on each node is kept; for example, operating system type, host name, machine type, model, and serial number. In addition, the status of the node is determined periodically by means of the fping command. The node and node group commands are built on top of a Perl DBI layer backed by a set of database drivers (DBDs) so that data can be stored in various formats and shared with other tools. Monitoring and Controlling Hardware You can control the hardware on remote nodes by using the remote control commands. For example, from a management node you can control remote managed nodes in a distant location. Running Commands Remotely The dsh command runs commands remotely across multiple nodes. Optionally, it can use an underlying remote shell that is specified by the user. For instance, a remote secure shell that complies with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Secure Shell protocol. By default, rsh is used. Configuration File Manager Configuration File Manager provides a file repository for the common configuration files among nodes in a cluster. In general, all the configuration files that need to be shared are stored in one location on the management server. Changes to these files are propagated and synchronized throughout the cluster. Though the files are common, there are mechanisms to allow for variations based on groups, IP address, and host name. Monitoring System Events A flexible distributed system monitoring application is provided by IBM CSM. This monitoring application allows the administrator to define conditions of interest to monitor on the system. An event occurs when a monitored condition of interest reaches a threshold defined in an event expression. When an event occurs, automated responses to that event take place. Many actions can be defined as part of these responses, including notification, running a predefined response script, or running a user-defined script. So that you can get up and running quickly and easily, a full set of commands is provided to tailor this application to your needs. Also, a set of predefined conditions and responses is included for easy implementation. This set of predefined conditions and responses can be used directly or can be taken as examples to be copied and modified. Among the system resources that can be monitored are: File systems Programs System resources Node availability Other resources by means of sensors Security Security on a single system is provided by the operating system in that only root can run or modify functions. Flexibility is provided for the degree of security required by the specific environment because remote shells that conform to the IETF Secure Shell protocol can be specified by using the dsh command for the appropriate situations. Network security for other functions is built on the identd function. The December release includes the following functions: CSM for Linux provides the capability for you to install nodes with both the Red Hat Linux operating system and CSM code, or just CSM. The full install of CSM nodes uses Kickstart to install the Red Hat Linux operating system. The CSM installation tools are used to install the management server, define the nodes, configure Kickstart, install the nodes, and monitor the progress of the installation. Distributed Command Execution Manager (DCEM) provides a GUI to allow you to run a command or script on multiple distributed machines on a network at the same time. You can specify a collection of individual machines, or you can create groups of machines and save them to use again. DCEM provides real-time command execution status on the individual machines that you specify, showing them in a waiting, working, successful, or failed state. It helps you to create, save, and edit command specifications, and it also creates a log of all distributed command activity. Product Positioning CSM for Linux provides a way to manage a collection of Linux servers (nodes) from a single point of control. Functions include automated set-up, hardware control, monitoring, and cfm. Administrators can manage individual nodes, run commands across nodes or groups of nodes, monitor system resources, and run automated responses to events. CSM exploits the advanced hardware management features of the supported servers in the Cluster CSM for Linux includes technology derived from IBM Parallel System Support Programs (PSSP) for AIX and is positioned as a complementary offering to PSSP and AIX-based clusters. It is aimed at customers who want robust CSM on an open, Intel-based server platform, and is targeted at the high performance computing market (Scientific and Technical Computing and Life Sciences), and at Net Generation companies (Web providers) and service providers who will use Linux clusters for Web serving, collaboration, and e-commerce applications. CSM provides a robust, scalable management platform to ease administration and reduce life cycle costs. Customers can manage their Linux servers from a central location, rather than having to manage each system individually, and can grow their systems incrementally as workload demand increases, without increasing the management complexity. Customers benefit from IBM s established leadership in supercomputing systems, because the production-proven technology and experienced skills from the SP and AIX platforms are being leveraged on Linux. Customers may be more willing to adopt Linux in a production environment when it is backed by superior management software. 4 IBM US Announcement Supplemental Information November 13, 2001 Software Maintenance Information Description IBM Software Maintenance is a one-year or three-year contract offering that enables you to maintain software product version and release currency, with voice support during normal business hours included at no additional charge for the first year, for selected Linux-based software products at a predetermined cost. One year of Software Maintenance is included in the price of the original license. For products participating in IBM Software Maintenance, you can receive all software product version and release upgrades and voice support announced during the contract period. If you allow either the one- or three-year software maintenance offering to expire without renewal, a Maintenance-After-License option will enable reinstatement in the IBM Software Maintenance offering, on a product-by-product basis. The following is general information regarding the Software Maintenance Offering being announced. Structure Each eligible licensed software program will include one year of Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) in the price of the license. A one- and three-year prepay option (represented by two separate program numbers) associated with each eligible licensed program. The Software Maintenance program numbers will have the same pricing structure as the license program numbers they are associated with. Each one- and three-year Software Maintenance PID will have three sets of feature numbers for each priced entity: A no-charge (NC) registration feature for the one-year contracts and a two-year priced feature (since the first year is included in the price of that license) for the three-year contracts A renewal feature of one or three years A Software Maintenance after license charge for customers who want to renew but have lapsed coverage The Software Maintenance order generated for this product will be a new order and have a new starting/ending period, separate from the one for the license already in effect. Definition of Software Upgrade: An upgrade is either a new version (3.x.x to 4.x.x) or a new release (x.3.x to x.4.x) of an IBM program announced as eligible for which you enrolled under the IBM Software Maintenance. Software Maintenance entitles you to future upgrades from only the latest announced version or release of an available eligible product. Upgrades do not include programs sold separately from the enrolled program, but enhance the performance of that program, or are considered add-ons or utilities. Programs that perform the same functions as the enrolled program but are installed on a non-linux platform are not considered upgrades. Note: Software preventative-maintenance releases x.x.1 to x.x.2 (modification level changes, updates, or refreshes) are released under the one-year or three-year maintenance program numbers but only when a supply feature has been announced. Supply features are only announced under the one-year and three-year options when there is an announced version/release change against the original program product. NC preventive-maintenance releases should be obtained by Software Maintenance customers in the same manner as non-software Maintenance customers. Example: Product A is offered under IBM Software Maintenance for pseries and three months later PTFs are incorporated into the program package. This is considered an update that would not be obtained under the one-year or three-year maintenance program numbers under the IBM Software Maintenance offering. Using the same example above, three months after the PTFs were incorporated into the program package, IBM announces a new version of product A. At that time, a supply feature is announced for product A under the one-year and three-year maintenance program numbers. This allows customers who are entitled by purchase or when the first year of maintenance is included with the license, of either the one-year or three-year maintenance offering for product A to order the upgrade under the one-year or three-year offering. IBM may announce a product that can be substituted for an enrolled product. This product is neither a new version, a new release, nor a preventative maintenance release of that enrolled product. In most cases, this product has a different architecture, more function, and a higher license charge than the enrolled product. IBM may provide those customers enrolled in the IBM Software Maintenance offering access to this product at a discounted rate. The terms of this transaction will be included in the new product announcement. Note: IBM will not offer standalone upgrades as a standard product offering. Standalone upgrades to this product/release, and its future versions and releases, will be considered only on a special request basis by IBM. Contract Duration: The IBM Software Maintenance contracts are on a product by product basis and are offered for one or three years. One year of Software Maintenance is included with the purchase of a new license for the product. The three year prepay option covers two additional years of coverage since the first year is included in the product license. 5 license for an eligible product is purchased. Refunds do not apply if cancellation occurs during a one- or three-year contract period. Customers are not required to renew under either the one- or three-year offering when the contract expires but will need to use the Maintenance-After-License option if the contract expires and they want to acquire a new version or release of an eligible product. If the one- or three-year contracts aren t renewed, the one- or three-year contracts will be removed from IBM administrative systems. Contract transfer within an enterprise is allowed. Payment Options: Customers enroll in the plan at a reduced Initial price at the same time a new license for an eligible program product is purchased. Customers can also enroll in the plan after purchase of a new license for an eligible program product is purchased but must purchase the Maintenance-After-License option. Software Maintenance Prices: The IBM Software Maintenance program prices are based on the published price of the software program at the time of the contract preparation. Minimum Contract Value: None Notification of Upgrade Availability and Ordering: Changes are currently underway to the Web-server where customers will register for notifications when Software Maintenance products are upgraded. Customers will be entitled to future version or release updates, as well as a year of voice support at no additional cost. Customers entering a one-year or three-year Software Maintenance offering for CSM for Linux should specify program number 5771-CSM or 5773-CSM. After selecting the one-year or three-year program number, customers should add the applicable billing features with quantity equal to the number of licenses in the contract. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Ordering Information IBM CSM is a product which has one charge unit: installs. There is one install for each instance of the Linux operating system. There is one instance of the Linux operating system for each managed node and for each management node. CSM is available in variable order quantities based upon the number of installs. Program Name: IBM CSM Version 1.1 New users of IBM CSM Version 1.1 should specify Machine Type 5765, Model E88, asset feature number 9001, and the feature number equal to the total number of desired licenses to be installed times the quantity of installs. An install is defined as an instance of the CSM code running on each member of an IBM Cluster 1300 system. For example, if ordering 17 CSM licenses, order the single feature number for Order-Type Description 8 32 installs with a quantity of 17. Each tier does not have to be stepped through. Only the single feature number multiplied by the actual number of licenses required should be ordered. If a customer orders additional licenses after the initial order then the feature number for the total number of installs should be used. For example, if ordering 20 additional CSM licenses in the example above, use the tier for 33 to 64 installs since the total number of licenses in the cluster will be
