QUICK START 1. About This Manual 1.1. Introduction We recommend reading Quick Start for OTS FINIST to gain the minimal knowledge necessary for setup, configuration, and initial usage of FINIST. Quick Start is by no means a replacement for the complete set of manuals that come with FINIST. This volume describes just the first steps, familiarizes you with the philosophy and the main design principles of FINIST as well as preparing and conducting operator training sessions. Quick Start is organized as a list of practical recommendations to save you time, avoid common mistakes and get a first taste of training session preparation How to Proceed To become familiar with FINIST, we recommend the following course of actions: Learn the modules and workplaces of FINIST, their purpose and major functionality; Set up and configure FINIST; Configure the power system model; Launch a training session without scenarios to observe the power system behavior. Issue control commands that change the system objects' parameters and watch the system reaction; Design a scenario; Try out the designed scenario during the training session. You can read the documentation as you go, referring to the sections that answer your questions and interest you. 5

There may be multiple reasons for failure to load the model. We list the most frequent problems below. Connection string is specified incorrectly in the Librarian. Start the Librarian, open the training session file, check the connection string entry and the Librarian configuration. See Section How to configure the Librarian for further details; 15

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR GDA Server is not started. Start FINIST Agent and launch GDA Server. See Section for details; FINIST Server is not started. Start FINIST Agent and launch FINIST Server. See Section for details Why the One-line diagram Shows Zeroes Instead of Actual Measurements? The Possible reasons are as follows. The one-line diagram folder lacks telemetry mapping table files TI.csv or TS.csv. The value for the appropriate measurement/status is missing from TI.csv or TS.csv file Unable to Change Measurement or Status Value The possible reason is that this particular measurement value is computed based on other measurements. It is not meant to be user controlled. Such measurements, for example, are loadflows across powerlines and voltages at uncontrolled buses The Measurement Does Not Immediately Assume the Entered Value Possibly, you are entering measurement setpoints. For example, generation or voltage regulation setpoints. FINIST shows the actual value of this measurement. The measurement will approach the setpoint over time. 16

Use Training session Save to save the changes to the training session file Ways to Quickly Create Additional Scenarios There are several ways to simplify subsequent scenario creation: by duplicating and then editing already existing scenarios; by creating a scenario from the log of already conducted training session; by merging multiple scenarios How to Configure Technologist s Workplace Technologist s Workplace needs to be configured after it is started for the first time. Follow the below steps to configure it. 1. Open Technologist s Workplace FINIST client using one of the following methods: double click on the FINISTTuner icon on the Windows desktop; using Windows Explorer, start %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Monitel\FINISTClients\FINISTTuner.exe; select Windows Start All Programs FINIST Training Library. 2. Select Settings Application settings from the pulldown menu. 22

QUICK START 3. The settings dialog windows looks as follows: 4. You should configure the path to the folder that stores oneline diagrams. We recommend using the same folder for both Technologist s and Operator s Workplaces Do I Need to Change the Loadflow Computation Settings in Technologist s Workplace? The initial settings for loadflow computation used in Technologist s workplace are tuned to provide optimal performance of FINIST computation engine with respect to both precision, speed and reliability. We recommend not to change them without due reason Does the Initial Case Need to Correspond to a Steady State? It is preferable to start the training session from a steady state which is balanced. 23

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR The initial state is configured in Technologist s Workplace. If the loadflow computation is successful, the message in the bottom right corner of Technologist s Workplace states: Loadflow calculation succeeded in all islands What Determines the Presence of Transients at the Start of the Training Session? If the initial state is not steady, for example if loaflow calculation does not converge, the start of the training session leads to transient processes. They may be intense but often subside quickly leaving the system in a steady state. If the training session starts from a balanced state, transients are barely noticeable. However, their presence is still possible due to peculiarities of some of the electrical equipment making a strict steady state impossible: small oscillations or ripples are always present How to Compute Initial State 1. Start Technologist s Workplace and open the training session file. 2. Click on the Loadflow button in the toolbar and wait for the completion of the loadflow calculation. 3. Check the calculation results by choosing Log from the list in the left panel of the Technologists s Workplace window. Then check Loadflow calculation log and Loadflow summary items. 4. The loadflow calculation may have three possible outcomes: Loadflow is computed ; Loadflow is computed only in several islands ; 24

QUICK START Since loadflow in each electrical island is computed independently. It is possible that the loadflow computation converged in some islands and failed in the others; Loadflow is not computed Loadflow computation did not converge in any of the islands of the system. Why is loadflow calculation log so detailed? Such a detailed log may be helpful in observing loadflow calculation iterations: the node indices with the largest power mismatch, exceeding the reactive power limits by generator units, etc. This may occasionally simplify configuring the initial steady state What to Do If Initial State Computation Does not Converge? You may want to study the loadflow calculation log and determine the node with the largest power mismatch. Rightclick on the node index and select Find in nodes from the dropdown context menu. This opens the node properties table. A single topological node may copies several buses. To determine the reasons for the lack of loadflow convergence, we recommend studying these buses. We also recommend you to take advantage of power system model data validity check. To perform the check, select Diagnostics Run diagnostics. Refer to the diagnostics log for the output of the run How to Change Powerplant Power Output 1. Find the generators of the powerplant whose output is to be changed. There are several ways this can be done: 25

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR Use Search in the toolbar. Enter substation name and obtain a list of buses and branches that belong to this substation. Double click on any of the buses to go to the bus properties table. Use Show diagram feature; Use power system object hierarchy in the left navigation panel of the main Technologist s Workplace window; Use table or diagram hyperlinks; Use objects from the bookmarks. 2. Proceed to the properties table of each individual generator. 3. Change the value of active generation P_gen. 4. Re-calculate loadflow by clicking on Loadflow button in the toolbar. 5. Check whether power balancing was successful How to Change Total Generation of a Region The total power generation for a region or control area is determined for all the generators of this region/area. It is shown in a dedicated measurement related to the region/area. To change the total generation you need to create an analog measurement in the database. The measurement type should be P_gen, MW. Then, this measurement can be manually controlled during the training session or offline in Technologist s Workplace. 26

QUICK START How to Change Reactive Power Generation In the initial case the generator may be set in the following three modes with respect to reactive power (Q) generation: operating between minimum and maximum values of Q; maximum reactive power generation; minimum reactive power generation. You can select among these modes by changing the setpoint of the generator s AVR. This change may be made as follows: 1. Find the generator using Technologist s Workplace diagrams, power system hierarchy, complete generator bus table or search. 2. Double click on the hyperlink and go to the generator properties table. 3. Enter the new value in the field Voltage setpoint V, kv. 4. Compute loadflow in the new state and make sure that the computation converges How to Save Changesets The model changes made by means of Technologist s Workplace are saved in changeset files (extension*.fdiff). Before saving, the changes have to be applied. That is, after the changes, you have either to compute loadflow or to select Changes Apply changes in the pulldown menu. To save changes, follow the below steps. Change the state variables. 1. Apply changes by either clicking on Powerflow and computing the loadflow or selecting Changes Apply changes. 27

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR 2. Select Changes Create a changeset file from the pulldown menu. 3. Select Save to file option in the popup window. 4. Select the location and name of the changeset file and click Save How to Attach a Changeset to a Training Session There are two ways of attaching a changeset file to a training session. 1. In Technologist s Workplace. After you changed the variables and applied the changes, choose Changes Save diff with project file from the pulldown menu. 2. In the Librarian. Open the training session file. Choose Editing Add changeset from the pulldown menu. Select the changeset file to be attached to the training session. The changeset appears in the list of changesets in the left navigation panel of the main Librarian window. Save changes in the training session file How Changesets are Applied to the Power System Model Once changeset files are attached to the training session, the changes are loaded automatically every time the session file is opened in Instructor s Workplace. Note that the power system model in the database does not change. That is, the changesets of various training sessions are applied to the same power system model. 28

QUICK START When a training session file with attached changesets is opened in Technologist s Workplace, a popup window appears. This window lists the changests to be applied. This allows you to decide whether you want the particular changesets to be applied How to Create Training Sessions with Different Initial States Here is a suggested sequence of steps to create two training sessions: Session 1 and Session 2 with different initial states. 1. Start the Librarian, fill out the required fields for a new training session Session 1 and save it in a new training session file. 2. Choose Tools Technologist s Workplace in Librarian s pulldown menu. Wait for the training session to load into Technologist s Workplace. 3. Prepare changesets for Session 1 using Technologist s Workplace. 4. Verify and apply the changes by computing loadflow in Technologist s Workplace. We recommend you ensure that the loadflow computation converges. 5. Save the changeset in a changeset file. 6. Return to the Librarian with the open Session 1. Choose Editing Add changeset from the pulldown menu. Select the created changeset file. Thus you have created a training session and attached a changeset to it. 7. Repeat steps 1-6 to create Session 2, associated changest files and attach them files to this training session. 29

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR Note that FINIST allows the same changeset file to be used in multiple training sessions How to Edit Power System Model Connecting Model Editor GDA Editor (GDAEditor.exe) is a tool to be used to modify the power system model stored in the database. Your first action is to connect the tool to the database. Follow the below steps. 1. Start GDA Editor. 2. In the toolbar of GDA Editor, state the name and port number of FINIST Server. 3. Connect to the server by clicking on Connect button in the toolbar. GDA Editor remembers the name and port number of FINIST server. Hence, there is no need to specify them in subsequent runs of GDA Editor. 30

QUICK START GDA Editor Overview The main GDA Editor window has multiple tabs and two panels. The navigation panel on the left contains the navigation tree of the power system model. The right panel shows detailed information about the particular object selected in the navigation panel. The specific presentation form of the navigation tree and the detailed information depends on the GDA Editor tab. Additional functionality may be available for the objects in the left and right window through dropdown context menu invoked with the right mouse click How to Edit Object Parameters in Specialized Editors Each object type, such as generator, powerline or transformer, has a specialized editor. You can invoke such editor from GDA Editor as follows. 1. Find the object to be edited in one of the tabs and panels of GDA Editor. 2. Double click on the object in the left navigation window or on one of the properties in the right detailed information window. This invokes the specialized editor. 3. Use the specialized editor to carry out changes to the object properties. 31

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR How to Move a Substation to a Different Region 1. Find the substation in Location or Type tab. 2. Invoke the specialized substation editor by double clicking on the substation name. 3. Select a new region in the dropdown menu of the field region. 4. Click ok in the menu. 32

QUICK START 3. Additional Information and Skills 3.1. Information Read this section to gain additional understanding of FINIST design and operation. We cover topics that may cause difficulties for a technologist working with FINIST Equipment Dynamic Response Parameters Do I need to change dynamic response parameters of the power system model equipment? We do not recommend changing the dynamic response parameters until you are quite familiar with FINIST and its operation. You should consider changing a parameter only if you are familiar with its physical meaning and function in the system model. What parameters determine the frequency regulation behavior of generators? - Speed governor droop, %; - Time constant of steam turbine reheater (for fossil fuel and nuclear power plants). What parameters determine operational dispatch ramp up and ramp down rates of generator units? - Active power pickup/drop speed, MW/min; - boiler time constant of a generator unit, secs. 33 How to configure generator AVR easily? The specialized editor default values for AVR usually produce acceptable performance of both AVR and the generator. The

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR most probable reason to change them is to damp undesirable oscillations of power system state variables. Often oscillations may be suppressed by decreasing AVR voltage gain or exciter response time. The mutual rotor swings of the same bus generators may be damped by tuning frequency and its first derivative gains. Reactive power oscillations between neighboring generators can be suppressed by tuning field current derivative gain. However, bringing the undesirable oscillations of the power system variables down to acceptable levels may require joint adjustment of multiple generators' parameters. FINSIT does not provide specialized tools for such coordinated adjustment. What exciter model does FINSIT use and how can I change it? FINIST uses a generalized exciter model which correctly represents major properties of practical generator excitation systems. Note that setting T_e=0 allows FINIST to model thyristor exciters Measurements Which measurements do I need to configure to control generators and powerstations? Each generator unit as well as a powerplant as a whole needs active power measurement. To control reactive power generation, you need to set up voltage measurement for each generator unit. 34

QUICK START What measurements do I need for power system frequency regulation? FINIST implements a simplified AGC model to support frequency regulation at a particular setpoint. This setpoint does not need to be at exactly the nominal frequency. To start frequency regulation by a powerplant, you need to enter the frequency setpoint in the frequency measurement of this powerplant. Note that this measurement has to be connected to one of the powerplant generators that is set up to regulate frequency Computation Engine Why does the training session clock value and speed differ from my computer clock? Instructor s and Operator s Workplaces clock reflects the training session time. The start time is read from the training session file. The simulation clock speed can be increased or decreased by the instructor for training purposes. Occasionally, the clock may also be momentarily slowed down due to extensive computational load of transitional processes SKILLS Technologist s Workplace Customization Option Tools Preferences lets you save your customized settings of the computation engine for later usage. Controlled measurement and flowgate lists are among such settings. 35

FINIST: OPERATOR TRANING SIMULATOR Using Power System Graph to Locate Objects Quickly Technologist s Workplace can automatically generate graphs of power system or its fragments. These graphs are quite helpful for visual representation of the power system and object location. However, the topology of such graphs may be rather complicated. Therefore, locating objects there may become difficult. Note that to ease the search, the objects modified the currently open Technologist s Workplace session are shown with dashed lines. The following two features may simplify power system graph representation: quick object selection and voltage filtering. Press and hold Ctrl button while highlighting a region of the graph with the mouse. This would select only the highlighted objects which allows to simplify the graph. Select the graph edge and press V button to select the specified nominal voltage level. That is, the graph will retain only objects of the same nominal voltage Using Bookmarks Panel Working with FINIST, you often have to manipulate the same objects in different tools: Technologist s Workplace, GDA Editor, Scenario Editor. Bookmarks provide quick access to the selected objects across the programs. Specifically, Bookmarks can refer to object property tables, equipment in specialized editors, changes in scenarios. All this can form a unified area of your interest. This way you can quickly open the property table of a generator you are working with as soon as you open Technologist s Workplace. Similarly, you can generate scenario 36

QUICK START steps quickly if necessary measurements are placed in Bookmarks. Bookmarks may hold folders to further subdivide this area of interest How to Add to Bookmarks in Technologist s Workplace In Technologist s Workplace, Bookmarks may hold: measurements, branches and buses of all types, power system regions and whole control areas. You may add the object to Bookmarks by right-clicking on it in the left navigation panel. Alternatively, you can select Tools Add to Bookmarks in the property table of an object How to Add to Bookmarks in GDA Editor You may place any object of the power system model to Bookmarks in GDA Editor. To add the object to Bookmarks, highlight it in left or right panel, then click on Add to Bookmarks button in the toolbar. 37
