We recommend using USB 2.0 cle (Type A/B) tht is no more thn six feet (two meters) long. USA/CAN Version 0

2 Remove the protective tpe nd film covering the mchine, nd lso from the LCD. Remove the plstic g contining the ink crtridges from on top of the pper try. 3 Instll the ink crtridges CAUTION If ink gets in your eyes, wsh it out with wter t once nd cll doctor if you re concerned. c Mke sure you hve ll the components. 2 Connect the power cord Mke sure you instll the Strter Ink Crtridges included with your mchine first. Mke sure tht the power is turned on. The LCD will show No Ink Crtridge. Open the ink crtridge cover. DO NOT connect the USB cle yet (if you re using USB cle). Connect the power cord. c Remove the ornge protective prt. The Wrning LED on the control pnel will sty on until you hve instlled the ink crtridges. To prolong the life of the print hed, provide the est ink crtridge economy nd mintin print qulity, we do not recommend unplugging the mchine frequently nd/or leving the mchine unplugged for extended periods of time. Ech time you plug the mchine in, it utomticlly clens the print hed, which uses some of your ink. Do not throw wy the ornge protective prt. You will need it if you trnsport the mchine. We recommend using to power down the mchine. Using llows miniml power to the mchine, resulting in periodic, ut less frequent, clening of the print hed. 2

3 d Unpck the ink crtridge. Turn the green relese lever on the ornge protective pcking counterclockwise until it clicks to relese the vcuum sel. Then remove the ornge protective pcking s shown. e Tke cre to mtch the sticker color with the crtridge color s shown in the digrm elow. Instll ech ink crtridge in the direction of the rrow on the lel. IMPORTANT DO NOT shke the ink crtridges. If ink stins your skin or clothing, wsh with sop or detergent t once. DO NOT touch the crtridge in the re indicted, s this cn cuse the mchine not to function with the crtridge. 2 2 f Gently push the ck of the ink crtridge mrked PUSH until it ltches. After ll the ink crtridges re instlled, close the ink crtridge cover. 2 The mchine will prepre the ink tue system for printing. This process will tke pproximtely four minutes. Do not turn off the mchine. We recommend you perform the next step while witing. 3

4 IMPORTANT DO NOT tke out ink crtridges if you do not need to replce them. If you do so, it my reduce the ink quntity nd the mchine will not know the quntity of ink left in the crtridge. DO NOT repetedly insert nd remove the crtridges. If you do so, ink my seep out of the crtridge. Once you open n ink crtridge, instll it in the mchine nd use it up within six months of instlltion. Use unopened ink crtridges y the expirtion dte written on the crtridge pckge. DO NOT dismntle or tmper with the ink crtridge, this cn cuse the ink to lek out of the crtridge. Brother strongly recommends tht you do not refill the ink crtridges provided with your mchine. We lso strongly recommend tht you continue to use only Genuine Brother Brnd replcement ink crtridges. Use or ttempted use of potentilly incomptile ink nd/or crtridges in the Brother mchine my cuse dmge to the mchine nd/or my result in unstisfctory print qulity. To protect your investment nd otin premium performnce from the Brother mchine, we strongly recommend the use of Genuine Brother Supplies. 4 Lod plin Letter/A4 pper Mke sure the first printed pge is Letter/A4 size. Pull the pper try completely out of the mchine. Open the output pper try cover. 4

5 c Gently press nd slide the pper width guides nd then the pper length guide to fit the pper size. Mke sure tht the tringulr mrks c on the pper width guides nd pper length guide line up with the mrk for the pper size you re using. 3 e Gently put the pper into the pper try print side down nd top edge first. Check tht the pper is flt in the try. IMPORTANT Be creful tht you do not push the pper in too fr; it my lift t the ck of the try nd cuse pper feed prolems. 2 3 d Fn the stck of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. When you use Legl size pper, press nd hold the universl guide relese utton s you slide out the front of the pper try. Alwys mke sure tht the pper is not curled or wrinkled. 5

6 f g h Gently djust the pper width guides to the pper with oth hnds. Mke sure tht the pper width guides touch the edges of the pper. Close the output pper try cover. Slowly push the pper try completely into the mchine. c 5 Check the print qulity When the preprtion process hs finished, the LCD shows Lod Pper nd Press Color Strt. Press Color Strt. Check the qulity of the four color locks on the sheet. (lck/yellow/cyn/mgent) If ll lines re cler nd visile, press + (Yes) to finish the qulity check nd go to the next step. OK If lines re missing, press - (No) nd follow the steps on the LCD. Poor i While holding the pper try in plce, pull out the pper support until it clicks, nd then unfold the pper support flp. 2 6

7 6 Set the dte nd time f For 2h Clock only: Press or to choose AM or PM, nd then press OK. The LCD displys the dte nd time. In ddition, setting the dte nd time llows the mchine to clen the print hed regulrly nd mintin optimum print qulity. To enter the lst two digits of the yer, press,, d or c to select the first numer, nd then press OK. Repet for the second numer. To sve the two-digit yer, press,, d or c to select OK, nd then press OK. Enter the two-digit month. Select OK nd press OK to sve. c Enter the two-digit dy. Select OK nd press OK to sve. d Yer: OK (e.g. Enter 3 for 203.) Press or to choose 2h Clock or 24h Clock, nd then press OK. e Enter the time. Select OK nd press OK to sve. You cn chnge dte, time, or clock type (2h or 24h) t ny time. For wireless setup using moile device, go to. For Windows nd Mcintosh users, go to. Press or to choose Yes. Press OK. Go to step 0 on pge 5 to continue with the wireless setup. 10 USB Windows For Windows USB interfce users (Windows XP Home/XP Professionl/Windows Vist /Windows 7/Windows 8) 0 Before you instll Click Instll MFL-Pro Suite nd click Yes if you ccept the license greements. Mke sure tht your computer is ON nd you re logged on with Administrtor rights. DO NOT connect the USB cle yet. If there re ny progrms running, close them. The screens my differ depending on your operting system. If the Windows Security screen ppers, click the check ox nd click Instll to complete the instlltion correctly. c Choose Locl Connection (USB), nd then click Next. Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. d Follow the on-screen instructions until the Plug in the USB cle screen ppers. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to Computer (My Computer). (For Windows 8: click the (File Explorer) icon on the tskr, nd then go to Computer.) Doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. If the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow or Yes. 0

11 2 USB Connect the USB cle Lift the scnner cover until it locks securely into the open position. Windows d Lift the scnner cover to relese the lock. Gently push the scnner cover support down nd close the scnner cover c using oth hnds. 3 2 Connect the USB cle to the USB port mrked with symol. You will find the USB port inside the mchine, s shown in the cllout elow. CAUTION Be creful not to pinch your fingers when the scnner cover closes. e The instlltion will continue utomticlly. The instlltion screens pper one fter nother. c Crefully guide the USB cle into the cle chnnel nd out the ck of the mchine. Connect the cle to your computer. DO NOT cncel ny of the screens during the instlltion. It my tke few seconds for ll screens to pper. f g h i If the Environmentl Advice for Imging Equipment screen ppers, click Next. When the On-Line Registrtion screen ppers, follow the on-screen instructions. Click Next. If you do not wnt to set your mchine s the defult printer, cler the Set s Defult Printer check ox, nd then click Next. When the Setup is Complete window ppers, confirm the settings, nd then click Next. USB Windows Mcintosh IMPORTANT Mke sure tht the cle does not restrict the cover from closing, or n error my occur.

12 3 USB Finish nd restrt Click Finish to restrt your computer. After restrting the computer, you must log on with Administrtor rights. Windows The following screens will pper. When the Softwre Updte Setting screen ppers, choose the softwre updte setting you wnt nd click OK. When the Brother Product Reserch nd Support Progrm screen ppers, select your preference nd follow the on-screen instructions. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, do one of the following: - Windows XP, Windows Vist nd Windows 7 users: Run the Instlltion Dignostics locted in (Strt) > All Progrms > Brother > DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your model nme). - Windows 8 users: To run the Instlltion Dignostics, doule-click (Brother Utilities) on the desktop, nd then click the drop-down list nd select your model nme (if not lredy selected). Click Tools in the left nvigtion r. Depending on your security settings, Windows Security or ntivirus softwre window my pper when using the mchine or its softwre. Plese llow or permit the window to continue. Internet ccess is required for the softwre updte nd the Brother Product Reserch nd Support Progrm. When you instll MFL-Pro Suite, Brother Help will lso e instlled utomticlly. Brother Help llows you to ccess the Brother Solutions Center when you click in the tsk try. Finish To instll optionl pplictions: Now go to Pge 29 The instlltion is now complete. Windows 8 users: If the Brother mnuls included on the CD-ROM re in PDF formt, use Adoe Reder to open them. If Adoe Reder is instlled on your computer ut you cnnot open the files in Adoe Reder, chnge the file ssocition for PDF (see How to open PDF file in Adoe Reder (Windows 8) on pge 3). 2

13 USB Mcintosh For Mcintosh USB interfce users (Mc OS X v0.6.8, 0.7.x, 0.8.x) 0 Before you instll Connect the USB cle to the USB port mrked with symol. You will find the USB port inside the mchine, s shown in the cllout elow. Mke sure your mchine is connected to the power nd your Mcintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. For Mc OS X v0.6.0 to users, upgrde to Mc OS X v x. Connect the USB cle DO NOT connect the mchine to USB port on keyord or non-powered USB hu. Connect the mchine directly to your Mcintosh. Lift the scnner cover until it locks securely into the open position. c Crefully guide the USB cle into the cle chnnel nd out the ck of the mchine. Connect the cle to your Mcintosh. IMPORTANT Mke sure tht the cle does not restrict the cover from closing, or n error my occur. USB Windows Mcintosh 3

15 For Wireless Network Users For wireless network interfce users 0 Before you egin First you must configure the wireless network settings of your mchine to communicte with your ccess point/router. After the mchine is configured to communicte with your ccess point/router, computers on your network will hve ccess to the mchine. To use the mchine from these computers, you will need to instll the drivers nd softwre. The following steps will guide you through the configurtion nd instlltion process. To chieve optimum results with norml everydy document printing, plce the Brother mchine s close to the network ccess point/router s possile with miniml ostructions. Lrge ojects nd wlls etween the two devices s well s interference from other electronic devices cn ffect the dt trnsfer speed of your documents. Due to these fctors, wireless my not e the est method of connection for ll types of documents nd pplictions. If you re printing lrge files, such s multi-pge documents with mixed text nd lrge grphics, you my wnt to consider choosing USB for the fstest throughput speed. If you hve previously configured the wireless settings of the mchine, you must reset the network settings efore you cn configure the wireless settings gin. On your mchine, press Menu. Press or to choose Network. Press OK. Press or to choose Network Reset. Press OK. Press + (Yes) twice to ccept the chnge. The following instructions re for infrstructure mode (connected to computer through n ccess point/router). Infrstructure Mode Access point/router Wireless network mchine (your mchine) connected to the ccess point/router c Wireless-cple computer connected to the ccess point/router d Wired computer connected to the ccess point/router e Moile device connected to the ccess point/router Plese mke sure the wireless network settings of the mchine mtch the ccess point/router. To view the Softwre nd Network User s Guide: Turn on your computer. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. For Windows : 2 Choose your model nd the lnguge. 16 For Wireless Network Users Choose your wireless setup method The following instructions will offer three methods for setting up your Brother mchine on wireless network. If you egn the wireless setup from step 7 on pge 7, go to method or c. For ll other users, choose the method you prefer for your environment. Method is the recommended wy to connect (Windows or Mcintosh). Setup using the CD-ROM (Windows nd Mcintosh) We recommend using computer wirelessly connected to your network for this method. A USB cle might e needed in some cses. Now go to pge 8 Mnul setup from the control pnel using the Setup Wizrd (Windows, Mcintosh nd moile devices) If your wireless ccess point/router does not support WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup ) or AOSS, write down the wireless network settings of your wireless ccess point/router in the re elow. If you need ssistnce during setup nd wnt to contct Brother Customer Service, mke sure you hve your SSID (Network Nme) nd Network Key redy. We cnnot ssist you in locting this informtion. Item Record the current wireless network settings SSID (Network Nme) Network Key* * The Network Key my lso e descried s the Pssword, Security Key, or Encryption Key. If you do not know this informtion (SSID nd Network Key), you cnnot continue the wireless setup. 17 For Wireless Network Users c One-push setup using WPS or AOSS (Windows, Mcintosh nd moile devices) Use this method if your wireless ccess point/router supports utomtic wireless (one-push) setup (WPS or AOSS ). Now go to pge 2 Wireless Network 7

18 For Wireless Network Users 2 Setup using the CD-ROM (Windows nd Mcintosh) For Mcintosh Users: Put the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive nd doule-click Strt Here OSX. Select Wireless instlltion nd follow the Wireless Device Setup instructions on your computer screen. When setup is complete, go to step 4-e on pge 27. d When the Firewll/AntiVirus detected screen ppers, choose Chnge the Firewll port settings to enle network connection nd continue with the instlltion. (Recommended), nd then click Next. For Windows Users: Put the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme screen ppers, choose your mchine. If the lnguge screen ppers, choose your lnguge. If the Brother screen does not pper utomticlly, go to Computer (My Computer). (For Windows 8: click the (File Explorer) icon on the tskr, nd then go to Computer.) Doule-click the CD-ROM icon, nd then doule-click strt.exe. If the User Account Control screen ppers, click Allow or Yes. Your mchine will now try to connect to your wireless network. It my tke few minutes. If the connection filed, check the error code on the printed report (or on the screen), nd refer to Trouleshooting on pge 22. Wireless setup is now complete. To instll MFL-Pro Suite For Windows users: Now go to c Choose Wireless Network Connection, nd then click Next. Step 4-e on pge 25 8

19 For Wireless Network Users 2 c d Mnul setup from the control pnel using the Setup Wizrd (Windows, Mcintosh nd moile devices) You must hve the wireless settings you wrote down for your network in step - on pge 6 efore you proceed. If you egn the wireless setup from step 7 on pge 7, press or to choose Setup Wizrd nd press OK. Then go to c. All other users go to. On your mchine, press Menu. Press or to choose Network. Press OK. Press or to choose WLAN. Press OK. Press or to choose Setup Wizrd. Press OK. When Enle WLAN? is displyed, press OK to ccept. This will strt the wireless setup wizrd. To cncel, press Stop/Exit. The mchine will serch for ville SSIDs. It will tke severl seconds to disply list of ville SSIDs. If list of SSIDs is displyed, press or to choose the SSID you wrote down in step - on pge 6. Press OK. If the wireless ccess point/router of the selected SSID supports WPS, nd the mchine sks to use WPS, go to e. If the mchine sks you to enter Network Key, go to f. Otherwise, go to g. e f g Press + (Yes) to connect your mchine using WPS. (If you choose - (No) to continue mnul configurtion, go to f to enter Network Key.) When the LCD shows Strt WPS, press the WPS utton on your wireless ccess point/router, nd then press + (Next) to proceed. Go to g. Enter the Network Key you wrote down in step - on pge 6. Press,, d or c to select letter or numer, nd then press OK. Press,, d or c to select, nd then press OK to cycle etween upper cse, lower cse nd specil chrcters. To move the cursor left or right, press,, d or c to select or, nd then press OK. (For more informtion, see Entering Text for Wireless Settings on pge 30.) When you hve entered ll of the chrcters, press,, d or c to select OK nd then press OK. Then press + (Yes) to pply your settings. Your mchine will now try to connect to your wireless network. It my tke few minutes. When OK ppers on the LCD, press OK. If the connection filed, check the error code on the printed report nd refer to Trouleshooting on pge 22. Wireless setup is now complete. If the list is lnk, check tht the wireless ccess point/router hs power nd is rodcsting the SSID. Move your mchine closer to the wireless ccess point/router nd try strting from gin. If your ccess point is set to not rodcst the SSID, you will hve to mnully dd the SSID nme. 20 For Wireless Network Users For moile device users: Connect your moile device to wireless ccess point/router using Wi-Fi connection. Downlod nd instll Brother iprint&scn (Android /ios/windows Phone) from your moile device s ppliction downlod site. You cn lso use AirPrint (ios) with this mchine. To downlod the User s Guide for the ppliction you re using (Brother iprint&scn/airprint), visit the Brother Solutions Center t nd click Mnuls on your model s pge. If you egn the setup from step 7 on pge 7, go ck to step 8 on pge 8 to continue the mchine settings. To instll MFL-Pro Suite, continue to step 3. If the connection filed, check the error code on the printed report nd refer to Trouleshooting on pge 22. When the LCD instructs you to strt WPS or AOSS, press the WPS or AOSS utton on your wireless ccess point/router (for more informtion, see the instructions provided with your wireless ccess point/router), nd then press OK on your mchine.
