Tenable.io for Amazon Web Services Introduction This document describes how to deploy Tenable.io for integration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Please any comments and suggestions to With more than one million users, Tenable Nessus is the world s mostt widely deployed vulnerability, configuration and compliance assessment product. Nessus prevents attacks by identifying the vulnerabilities, configuration issues and malware that hackers could use to penetrate your network. It is as important to run these assessments in AWS as it is in any other IT environment. Amazon recommends that all new and existing AWS customers scan their AWS instances while in development and operations and before publishing to AWS users. A Nessus scanner (Pre Authorized) is available in the Amazon Marketplace. The Nessus scanner links to and is managed by Tenable.io, and allows pre authorized scanning of AWS EC2 environments and instances. Customers interested in leveraging the pre authorized Nessus scanner to secure their AWS environments and instances must have active Tenable.io and Amazon Web Services accounts. Integration Requirements The following are required in order to integrate Tenable.io with AWS: Tenable.io account (To purchase a Tenable.io account or set up a free evaluation, visit / io.) Amazon Web Services (AWS) account (To createe a free account, visit //aws.amazon. com/start now.)

Integration Configuration Once you have created a Tenable.io account, navigate to and log in. After logging in, click Scans located in the top menu bar, and then click Scanners (highlighted below) in the left hand menu. Under the Linked Scanners tab, copy and save the Linking Key (highlighted below). This key will be needed during the AWS configuration steps. 2

Amazon Web Services Configuration Create an IAM Role To begin the AWS configuration, you must first create an Identity and Access Management (IAM) role. This role eliminates the need to store AWS access keys by providing the scanner instance with temporaryy AWS credentials. Once created, the IAM role will be assigned to the Nessus Scanner (Pre Authorized) instance(s) as seen in the Launch Nessus Scanner Instance section below. Additionally, this role must also have the Describe VPC Peering Connections role. The VPC peering relationship must be from the VPC containing the pre authorized Nessus scanner (requestor) to the VPC(s) you want to scan. To create the IAM role, navigate to aws.amazon.com and log in. Once logged in, click Services (highlighted below) in the top menu bar. Amazon is continually updating their service, so screenshotss may differ from the AWS interface you see. 3

Click IAM (highlighted below) located within the All AWS Services section. Click Roles (highlighted below) in the left hand menu. 4

Click Create New Role (highlighted below). Enter a descriptive Role Name and click Next Step. Note: The role name cannot be edited once it is created. 5

Select the Amazon EC2 role type as shown in the screenshot below. Select the checkbox next to the AmazonEC2ReadOnlyAccess policy (recommended) and click Next Step. If a custom policy is created, DescribeInstances and DescribeVpcPeeringConnections permissionss are required. 6

Once the IAM information is reviewed, click Create Role. The newly created IAM role will now appear in the role list. 7

Launch Nessus Scanner Instance Once the IAM role has been created, click Services in the top menu bar and then click EC2 (highlighted below) to begin launching the pre authorized scanner instance. 8

Click Launch Instance (highlighted below) to create an Amazon EC2 instance (virtual server). In Step 1: Choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI), click AWS Marketplace in the left hand menu (highlighted below). 9

In Step 1: Choose an Amazon Machine Image (AMI), enter Tenable in the search box (highlighted below) and hit Enter. You will be presented with two options: Nessuss BYOL scanner and Nessus Scanner (Pre Authorized). Select the Nessus Scanner (Pre Authorized) option. In Step 2: Choose an Instance Type, Tenable recommends selecting the m4.large instance (or higher) for best performance. The instances offer various combinations of CPU, memory, storage and network performance. Refer to Amazon EC2 Pricing for more details on Amazon s pricing structure. Check the box (highlighted below) to select an instance and click Next: Configure Instance Details. 10

For Step 3: Configure Instance Details, configure each option to meett the requirements for your environment. Refer to Table 1 AMI Instance Configuration below for a description of each field. In order for the Nessus scanner to communicate with Tenable.io, a network route must be created to allow the scanner to reach cloud.tenable.c com. Table 1 AMI Instance Configuration Option Number of Instances Purchasing option Description Enter the number of AMI instances to deploy. Multiple instancess can be deployed at a time. Check the Request Spot instances box to launch an instance at Spot prices rather than On demand prices. Refer to Spot Instancess for details. Click the drop down to select the Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) the instance will be launched in. If needed, click the Create a VPC link to createe a new VPC. Network Subnet Auto assign Public IP Do not select Launch into EC2 Classic as pre authorized scanners are not authorized outside of VPCs. Click the drop down to select the subnet within the VPC you have chosen. Click the Create new subnet link to create a new subnet. If enabled, this option requests a public IP addresss from Amazon s public pool, making the instance reachablee from the internet. 11

IAM role Shutdown behavior Enable termination protection Monitoring EBS optimized instance Tenancy Click the drop down and select the required IAM role. Click the Create a new IAM role link to create a new role. For more information on IAM roles, refer to IAM Roles for Amazon EC2. Click the drop down and select either Stop or Terminate to determine the instance behavior when an OS level shutdown is performed. Enabling this option prevents an instance from accidentally being terminated. Enabling this option allows you to monitor, collectt and analyze metrics about the instances. Enabling this option allows for improved performance for Amazon EBS volumes throughh the use of dedicated throughput between Amazon EC2 and Amazon EBS. Click the drop down to select whether you want the instance running on a dedicated or shared host. For more information on dedicatedd hosts, refer to Amazon EC2 Dedicated Hosts. After completing the instance detail configuration, click Advanced Details to expand the options shown in the screenshot below. For the User data configuration setting, select Ass text. In the field below, enter the scanner name, the Linking Key previously copied from Tenable.io and the previouslyy created IAM role. The User data must be entered in JSON format as seen in the example below: JSON format for User data : { } "name": "AWS_Scanner", "key": "d92a78e1177ff9ead79176b34c5de936ce00f0a7...", "iam_role": "TenableIO" 12

The Linking Key and IAM role are both required entries in the User data field. For a complete listing of entries that can be included, seee Table 2 EC2 User Data below. Table 2 EC2 User Data Parameter name key Description Name of the scanner shown in the Nessus UI (recommended). Iff a name is not specified, it will default to the instance ID Linking key used to register scanner with Tenable..io. Only used during initial registration (required) iam_role Name of the IAM role assigned to the scanner instance (required) proxy FQDN/IP address of proxy, if required proxy_port Port used to connect to proxy, if required Once the User data has been entered, click Next: Addd Storage. Tenable requires the pre authorized Nessus scanners to have a minimum of 30GB of storage. 13

In Step 4: Addd Storage, click Add New Volume (highlighted below) ) to add additional storage to the previously created instance, if needed. Once the volume is added, you can manually specify the amountt of storage to add. For demonstration purposes, the new volume was set to 30GB as shown below. For more information on adding volumes, refer to the Amazon Storagee documentation. Click Next: Add Tags (highlighted below) once the storage settings are finalized. In Step 5: Add Tags, createe tags to help manage and categorize yourr AWS EC2 resources. Click the Add another tag button to add additional tags. Each tag requires both a Key and a Value, and each resource can have a maximum of 10 tags. For more information on tags, refer to Tagging Your Amazon EC2 Resources. Once you have finished adding tags to your instance, click Next: Configure Security Group (highlighted below). 14

In Step 6: Configure Security Group, check the Create a new security group radio button and enter a descriptive Security group name. In the Rules section below, click the X (highlighted below) next to each rule to deletee it. There is no way to directly access the AMI, so removing the rules prevents anyy inbound traffic, and is essentially a deny all firewall rule. Once all rules are removed, click Review and Launch (highlighted below). In Step 7: Review Instance Launch, you can view and edit each previously configured option by expanding each section. Once reviewed, click Launch (highlighted below) to create the instance. 15

After clicking Launch, you will be prompted to select an existing key pair or create a new key pair. Click the drop down, select Proceedd without a key pair and click the acknowledgement box. Once those options are selected, click Launch Instances (highlighted below). No key pair is needed since the instance is not listening on any ports and no connections to it are available. After launching an instance, it will display a list of all your instances. Once the newly created instance finishes initializing, the Instance State should display as running, as shown below. Once the Nessus scanner instance setup is complete, you will need to create a Security Group for all target instances. This Security Group will need to allow all traffic from the previously created Security Group of the Nessus scanner, which will allow the Nessus scanner unrestricted access to scan AWS targets. 16

To configure the group, click Security Groups in the left hand menu and then click Create Security Group as shown below. Enter a descriptive Securityy group name and Description. Next, click the VPC drop down and select the correct network. 17

Click Add Rule (highlighted below) to create an Inbound security group rule. Next, click the Type drop down and select All TCP. In the CIDR, IP or Security Group box, begin typingg the name of the previously created Security Group; it will auto complete the entry for you as shown in the screenshot below. Repeat the previous steps to add Inbound security group rules for both All UDP and All ICMP traffic as well. Once all rules are created, and options selected, click Create. 18

Tenable.io Configuratio on After completing the AWS configuration and setting up a route from the Nessus scanner to Tenable.io, navigate to and log in to your Tenable.io account. Once logged in, click Scans located in the top menu bar, and then click Scanners (highlighted below) in the left hand now see the newly created AWS scanner (highlighted below). Note: It may take a few minutes for the scanner to appear in an Online menu. Under the Linked Scanners tab, you should status. Once the scanner is in an Online status, click Scans in the top menuu bar and then click + New Scan. 19

Select a Scan Template to meet your scanning requirements. The Basic Network Scan (highlighted below) is used for demonstrationn purposes in this document. Enter a descriptive name for the scan, a description (optional) and clickk the Scanner drop down to select the previously created AWS scanner. Once the AWS scanner is selected, the Target List will be removed, and a Targets option will appear in the left hand menu (highlighted below). Clicking Targets will display a list of all AWS instances available to bee scanned. 20

Check the box next to the instance(s) to be scanned and click the Credentials tab (highlighted below) to enter the credentials of the instance(s) you wish to scan. Once the credentials have been entered, click Save to finalize scan settings. To launch a scan of the AWS instance, navigate to the scan folder and click the rightt arrow next to the previously configured scan (highlighted below). Scans can also be set up on a recurring, or scheduled, basis by navigating to the Settings section of each scan and enabling the Schedule option. 21

About Tenable Network Security Once a scan has completed, the results can be viewed by clicking on the completed scan. A more detailed view of the results is available by clicking the Vulnerabilities tab (highlighted below).
