What is Windows 10? The Office of Information Technology has implemented Windows 10, a brand new Operating System (OS) for the campus community, as part of a CUNY initiative to provide modern technology to our Students, Faculty and Staff. Windows 10 has a multitude of features that help users navigate the age of technology by pairing the look and feel of Windows 7 with the superior performance of Windows 8. This guide will help users through some of these features. Windows 10 Key Features Start menu In Windows 10 to access the Start menu, select in the lower-left corner of the taskbar. The Start menu can also be accessed by pressing the Start button located on your keyboard or device. Account options Click on your account name to change your account picture, lock your device, sign out of your account, or switch to a different user account. Page 1 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
Power To shut down or restart your computer just click on the power button. Quick links and frequently used apps On the left side of the Start menu, there will be some quick links to computer Settings, File Explorer and frequently used application. The section entitled Most used you will notice your most recently used applications (apps) and programs. If an arrow is present adjacent to an application or program, move your mouse over it to see a list of your recently used files for that particular program. Page 2 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
All apps Click All Apps to see all your applications and programs in alphabetical order installed on your computer. When looking for a specific app you can just type it in the search box. Search Search across your computer, applications, cloud storage on OneDrive (if connected), the Microsoft app store and the Web at the same time by simply opening the Start menu and typing in the search box. Page 3 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
Pin your favorite apps You can easily pin apps, programs, and folders to the Start menu or taskbar for fast access to the things you use the most. To Pin an app Click Start, select All Apps, right-click the app you want to pin, and then select Pin to Start or your taskbar. Once pinned to your start menu, your app will show up as a tile on the right. Right-click the tile to change its size. Drag and drop to move it around. Page 4 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
Advanced Features Multitasking Snap windows With Windows 10 you can have up to four programs snapped on the same screen; Windows will even suggest how to fill the gaps with other open apps and programs. To snap, click and hold the top of the window and drag it to either the side or corner of the screen. You ll see a shadow of where the window will snap; release the window to snap it into place. If you have other apps or programs running on your desktop, Windows will suggest how to fill the remaining space. Simply click an app or program that you would like to fill the gap instantly. By default, the app or program will open as a half screen; however, if you would like it to fill a quadrant, just click and hold the top of the window and drag into an open corner. You can also hold the windows key and press an arrow direction to snap the currently open application to an area on your screen. Task view A new feature in Windows 10 is the Task view button which helps you quickly switch between them. Click Task view to see all of your running apps and programs; select any item to open it. Page 5 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
Multiple desktops With Windows 10 you create multiple virtual desktops that will keep things neatly organized for you. Select Task view from the taskbar (or use the WIN+Tab key combination), and then click Add a desktop. A thumbnail will show up at the bottom of the task view page. Click the blank thumbnail to open up a clean desktop. Drag open applications onto the new workspace to declutter your various tasks without worrying about losing data. To switch between desktops, click Task view (or use the WIN+Tab key combination) and then choose a desktop from the bottom of the page. If you have any questions about Windows 10, please contact the Technology Service Center at tsc@bcc.cuny.edu or Page 6 of 6 - Windows 10 User Guide V1.2-9/23/2016
