This guide provides an overview of how to access and use the EX2500 Web Device Manager. For details about the switch information, statistics, and configuration parameters available from the EX2500 Web Device Manager, see the EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference and EX2500 Ethernet Switch Configuration Guide. NOTE: This guide documents Release 3.0 of the EX2500 Ethernet Switch. For additional information either corrections to or information that might have been omitted from this manual see the EX2500 Ethernet Switch Release 3.0 Release Notes at Audience This guide is intended for network installers and system administrators engaged in configuring and maintaining a network. Administrators must be familiar with the EX2500 switch, a Web browser, Ethernet concepts, IP addressing, the IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol, and SNMP configuration parameters. Objectives v

9 Chapter 1 Getting Started This chapter briefly describes the software features and requirements for the EX2500 Web Device Manager, and explains how to access the Web Device Manager start page: EX2500 Web Device Manager Features on page 1 EX2500 Web Device Manager Requirements on page 2 Switch Setup on page 2 Web Browser Setup on page 2 Starting the EX2500 Web Device Manager on page 3 EX2500 Web Device Manager Features Network administrators can access switch configuration and monitoring functions through the Web Device Manager. The Web Device Manager has the following features: Many of the same configuration and monitoring functions as the command-line interface (CLI) Intuitive and easy-to-use interface structure Password protection Nothing to install; the Web Device Manager is part of the EX2500 switch software Automatic upgrades with each new software release NOTE: You can perform most configuration and monitoring tasks through the Web Device Manager. For a comprehensive set of commands, use the command-line interface (CLI). See the EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference. EX2500 Web Device Manager Features 1

10 EX2500 Ethernet Switch Web Device Manager Guide EX2500 Web Device Manager Requirements EX2500 switch Installed EX2500 switch software PC or workstation with network access to the switch s management interface, as configured using the management module Frame-capable Web-browser software, such as the following: Netscape Navigator 4.7x or later Internet Explorer 6.0x or later Mozilla FireFox or later JavaScript enabled in your Web browser Switch Setup Before you can access the Web Device Manager, minimal configuration is required on the EX2500 switch. IP Interfaces At least one IP interface must be configured on the switch. Each IP interface address provides a point of access for EX2500 switch management. The default management interface is 1, which allows access to EX2500 switch management. For complete information about configuring IP interfaces, see your EX2500 Ethernet Switch Hardware Guide. Enabling and Disabling EX2500 Web Device Manager Access By default, Web Device Manager access is enabled. If you need to disable or re-enable access, use the following command from the command-line interface: ex2500(config)# [no] access http enable For more information about accessing and configuring the switch through the CLI, see your EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference. Web Browser Setup Most modern Web browsers work with frames and JavaScript by default, and require no additional setup. However, you should check your Web browser s features and configuration to make sure frames and JavaScript are enabled. NOTE: JavaScript is not the same as Java. Please make sure that JavaScript is enabled in your Web browser. 2 EX2500 Web Device Manager Requirements

11 Chapter 1: Getting Started Starting the EX2500 Web Device Manager When the switch and browser setup is done, follow these steps to launch the Web Device Manager: 1. Start your Web browser. 2. Enter the switch IP interface address or domain name in the Web browser s URL field. For example, if your switch has an IP interface with a network IP address of , you could enter the following: If the IP interface s address has a name on your local domain name server, you could enter the name instead. If your switch and browser are properly configured, you are prompted to enter a password: Enter the account name and password for the switch s administrator or user account. The default account name is admin, and the default password is admin. For more password information, see your EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference. 4 Starting the EX2500 Web Device Manager

13 Chapter 1: Getting Started 4. Allow the Web Device Manager Dashboard page to load. When you enter the proper account name and password combination, the Web Device Manager Dashboard page appears in your browser s viewing area. You might experience a slight delay while the Dashboard page is being initialized. Do not stop the browser while loading is in progress. When loading is complete, a folder icon appears in the left-hand navigation window. NOTE: The sample screens that appear in this guide might differ slightly from the screens displayed by your system. Screen content varies based on the type of switch unit that you are using and the firmware versions and options that are installed. Starting the EX2500 Web Device Manager 5

16 EX2500 Ethernet Switch Web Device Manager Guide Window Layout Once you are properly logged in, the EX2500 Web Device Manager appears in your Web browser s viewing window: Use the four regions on an EX2500 Web Device Manager screen as follows: Toolbar Select the context for your actions in the other windows. (See Toolbar on page 9.) Navigation window Select particular items or features to act upon. (See Navigation Window on page 10.) Forms window View or alter switch information. (See Forms Window on page 10.) Message window Display the most recent switch syslog messages and events. (See Message Window on page 11.) 8 Window Layout

17 Chapter 2: EX2500 Web Device Manager Basics Toolbar The toolbar consists of context tabs and commands. Context Tabs Use the three context tabs in the toolbar to set the context for your actions in the application: Dashboard Configure Monitor Selected by default when the Web Device Manager is first activated. When selected, basic switch information and status appears in the forms window. Select an item in the navigation window to display the desired dashboard information in the forms window. When selected, you can access the switch configuration forms. Configuration forms can be altered only if you are logged in using the administrator account. Select an item in the navigation window to display the desired configuration form in the forms window. When selected, you can view information about switch performance. Select an item in the navigation window to display the desired statistics in the forms window. The selected context tab is highlighted, to remind you of the current context mode. Commands The following general commands are available on the toolbar: Save to Active Config Save to Backup Config Show Config Show Log Help Logout Saves the current configuration to the startup configuration block. Saves the current configuration to the backup configuration block. Opens a new Web browser window that displays the running configuration. Opens a new Web browser window that displays the most recent switch log messages. Close the log browser when you are finished. Opens a new Web-browser window that displays basic online help information. Close the Help browser when you are finished. Logs off from the switch and exits the Web Device Manager. Toolbar 9

18 EX2500 Ethernet Switch Web Device Manager Guide Navigation Window The navigation window is used for selecting a particular switch feature to act upon. Status, statistics, or configuration forms for the selected item will appear in the forms window, depending on the context chosen on the toolbar. The navigation window contains a tree of folders, sub-folders, and feature icons: You can click any closed folder to open it and reveal its contents. Click any open folder to close it. Click any feature icon to load the appropriate status, statistics, or configuration form in the forms window. Some folders also have forms. If the name of the folder is underlined, click the name to display the appropriate form. Forms Window When a feature icon is selected on the navigation window, a status, statistics, or configuration form is displayed in the forms window. The exact nature of the form depends on the current context selected on the toolbar, as well as the type of information available. Not all feature icons have forms for all contexts. Some forms display switch information such as settings, status, or statistics. Others allow you to make configuration changes to switch parameters. 10 Navigation Window

19 Chapter 2: EX2500 Web Device Manager Basics Message Window Switch log messages are generated by events such as login and logout activity, password changes, configuration changes, and switch reboots. The Web Device Manager records the most recent messages and displays each one briefly in the message window. When the last message has been displayed, the cycle is repeated. To view all messages at the same time, select the Show Log command on the toolbar. A new Web browser window will open to display the log information. Close the window when you are finished. 21 Chapter 3 Using the Dashboard This chapter describes how to use the EX2500 Web Device Manager dashboard feature: Dashboard Overview on page 13 Displaying Dashboard Forms on page 13 Dashboard Overview The EX2500 Web Device Manager can display the present settings and operating status of a variety of switch features. The same information available through the switch s command-line interface (CLI) is present on the dashboard forms. The following section provides a basic outline for viewing the dashboard forms. You should first be familiar with the configuration commands in the EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference. Displaying Dashboard Forms Follow these basic steps for viewing switch dashboard forms: 1. Select the Dashboard context tab in the Web Device Manager toolbar: Dashboard Overview 13

The same configuration parameters that are available through the switch s command-line interface (CLI) are present on the Web Device Manager configuration forms. The following section provides a basic outline for switch configuration. You should first be familiar with the configuration commands in the EX2500 Ethernet Switch Command Reference. NOTE: To change switch configuration settings, you must be logged in using the administrator account. Viewing or Configuring Switch Parameters Follow these basic steps for viewing or configuring switch parameters: 1. Click the Configure context tab in the Web Device Manager toolbar: Web Device Manager Configuration Overview 15

25 Chapter 4: Configuring the Switch and Loading Software Loading Switch Software You can use the Web Device Manager to load software onto the EX2500 switch. The software image to load can reside in one of the following locations: TFTP server Local computer After you log in to the Web Device Manager, perform the following steps to load a software image: 1. In the Image Settings section, next to Image for Transfer, select the image version you want to replace:. 5. Enter the filename, and click Get Image. Once the image has loaded, the page refreshes to show the new software. 18 Loading Switch Software
