1 VNX-F Series Software Setup Guide Before you begin 1. Create an EMC Support account on the EMC online support website (support.emc.com). 2. Configure your server environment. Reference the E-Lab Navigator to find support matrices, host connectivity guides, and other resources for configuring your environment. From the support.emc.com home page, select Product and Support Tools > E-Lab Interoperability Navigator. 3. Set up a Unisphere management station, as described in the document, Setting up a Unisphere Management Station for the VNX Series. Go to support.emc.com and search EMC support for Setting up a Unisphere Management Station to find this document. 4. Watch a video on how to get started with your VNX-F model. Search the EMC Demos play list on YouTube for the video titled, VNX-F Series Software Setup - Quick Start. Install your VNX-F Hardware 1. Download the latest VNX-F Hardware Installation Guide for your model from EMC online support. Go to support.emc.com and search EMC support for VNX-F Hardware Installation Guide. 2. Follow the instructions for installing, cabling, and powering up your system as described in your model s most recent version of the VNX-F Hardware Installation Guide. Download software You will need to download three software packages from support.emc.com. If you have earlier versions of these software packages, uninstall them before installing the latest version. The names of the packages are: Unisphere Storage System Initialization Utility (installed on your Unisphere management station) Unisphere Service Manager (installed on your Unisphere management station) Unisphere Host Agent (installed on each host you will register) 1 VNX-F Series Software Quick Setup Guide

2 Initialize your system 1. Go to support.emc.com > Support by Product. 2. In the Find a product field, enter VNX-F Series. 3. Select your VNX-F model. 4. To locate Unisphere Service Manager and Unisphere Host Agent, click Downloads. 5. To locate Unisphere Initialization Utility, click Tools. 6. For each of the required software packages, download the latest version and save the software packages to your management station or host, as required. Note: Before installing the software, verify that your management server is connected to the same subnet as the 10/100/1000 management ports of the system that you want to initialize. Initialize your system Use the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard to discover systems and set network parameters. Install the initialization wizard on a server or another host, such as a Unisphere management station. The only requirement is that the host be connected to the same network subnet as the system management ports. Note: If your system is behind a firewall, open the UDP ports 2162 (outgoing) and 2163 (incoming). If these two ports are not open, the Initialization Wizard will not function properly. 1. In the folder where you saved the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Utility, run the installation file. For example: UnisphereInitTool-operating system-language-version-build 2. Follow the instructions in the wizard. Refer to the wizard s online help for more information. 3. Once installation is complete, launch the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Utility to initialize your array. 2 VNX-F Series Software Quick Setup Guide

3 Update your VNX-F operating environment Update your VNX-F operating environment EMC recommends running the latest version of your VNX system s operating environment (OE) software. Use Unisphere Service Manager (USM) to upgrade your OE. USM software wizards allow you to update your system software without the assistance of your service provider. The wizards help you download the necessary OE software, run any pre-install validation checks, and install the software. USM supports software upgrades for operating environment, service packs, and other system firmware upgrades. 1. In the folder where you saved USM, double-click the installation file. For example: UnisphereServiceManager-operating system-language--version-build 2. After the installation is complete, launch USM. 3. Log into your system. 4. Select Software > Downloads > Download VNX software updates. 5. For Storage system type, choose VNX for Block. 6. Follow the steps in the wizard to complete the download. 7. After the download, select Software > System Software > Prepare for Installation 8. Once the Prepare for Installation step is complete, select Software > System Software > Install Software to proceed with the installation. Follow the instructions to install the desired software package. 9. When the installation is complete, select Notify your service provider with updated storage system configuration information, and click Finish. 10.Close USM. Register your host Use the Unisphere Host Agent to register your host with the attached system and add IP addresses. The agent sends initiator records to the system and retrieves information from the system automatically at startup, or when requested by Unisphere. It sends operating system drive mapping information to the attached VNX, monitors system events, and retrieves LUN world wide name (WWN) and capacity information from your system. 1. In the folder where you saved the Unisphere Host Agent, run the installation file. For example: UnisphereHostAgent-operating system-language--version-build 2. Follow the steps in the wizard. Refer to the wizard s online help for more information. Update your VNX-F operating environment 3

4 Log into Unisphere Note: After you install the Host Agent, it may take up to 15 minutes for the host to appear as Registered in Unisphere. Log into Unisphere 1. From your management station, open a supported browser and enter the IP address of SPA or SPB. 2. Select your system in the drop-down menu. Verify your capacity Select Storage > Storage Pools and verify there is one pre configured storage pool: Name = Flash_Pool State = Ready Total capacity = purchased capacity in GB Verify registration of host initiators 1. Select Hosts > Initiators. 2. Verify that the Registered field displays Yes for hosts on which the Host Agent was installed. Note: If you didn t use the Host Agent to register, you can manually register now by selecting an initiator and clicking Register. Create LUNs Use the LUN Provisioning Wizard to create LUNs and assign them to your hosts. 1. Select Storage. 2. In the Wizards list on the Storage page, click the LUN Provisioning Wizard. 3. Follow the steps in the wizard to create LUNs. 4. Verify your LUNs are displayed in the Storage > LUNs window. 5. 5 Learn more Upgrades You can upgrade your VNX-F to a new capacity. To do this you will be adding hardware and expanding your Flash_Pool. 1. Add hardware. a. Go to mydocuments.emc.com. b. Select VNX Series > Add VNX hardware to generate a customized procedure for adding hardware to your system. Note: When adding new DAEs as part of an upgrade, ensure that they are installed across all available buses to evenly distribute the load. 2. Expand your Flash_Pool. a. Launch Unisphere and select your system in the drop-down list. b. Select Storage > Storage pools. c. Select your pool and click Expand. d. Under Extreme Performance, use the drop-down menu to select the number of Flash VP disks to add. The number of disks selected should match the number of disks that were ordered with your upgrade. e. Click OK. f. Create LUNs as described in the Create LUNs section of this document.
