10 4. Chassis Installation The Savant Media Server should be installed on a solid, flat, level surface such as a table, cabinet or shelf using the four included feet. The location should be dry, well ventilated, and out of direct sunlight. It is acceptable to flat stack multiple Savant Media Server chassis one atop of the other without a ventilation space between the units. However, Savant recommends that in heavy usage scenarios where multiple channels will be consistently driven, an empty space at least 1 rack unit (1.75 in) in height is used between the media servers. This will assist in heat dissipation and prevent thermal protection from activating due to overheating. Rack Installation SMS-002A: A 2U or higher rack shelf is required to install the SMS-002A within a rack. Be sure to use a shelf with vents to provide adequate ventilation for the media server. SMS-005A/SMS-102A: Rack ears are included to install the SMS-005A or SMS-102A in a standard 19- inch equipment rack. When installing in a rack, the attached feet should be removed. Wiring and Connections When making connections, label the cables with the source and destination. This will make modifications and troubleshooting easier. Audio Connections Savant recommends the use of shielded RCA interconnects between the media server and the amplifier/ switcher to maintain a high level of audio performance. If using a switcher, shielded RCA interconnects should also be used between the switcher and the amplifier. Typical System Diagram of 38

11 AC Power Connection IMPORTANT CAUTIONS and WARNINGS! The SMS performs network and audio configuration during the initial startup process. See IMPORTANT! Initial Startup Requirements! before applying power to the SMS for first time. Do not plug the SMS directly into the switched accessory outlet of another device! These outlets are intended for use with low current draw products such as tuners, CD players, Blu-ray players and other similar devices. These outlets are not designed to handle the high current draw of a media server. Using these outlets for a media server is a significant safety hazard. Do not remove power from the SMS without shutting the system down properly. If this situation occurs, press the front Power button once. Wait for 2 minutes and press the Power button a second time. Example: Configuration and Remote Security By default, the SMS does not require a password to access the configuration utility or control it from a remote location. To restrict access to the configuration utility, enter a username, password, and recovery address in the fields under Configuration Security. To restrict access to control the SMS from a remote location, enter a username, password, and recovery address in the fields under Remote Control Security. Date and Time Settings These settings are automatically updated in the SMS through a local Network Time Protocol (NTP) server. To use these settings, set the Time zone to match the location of the SMS, the default NTP server can be used and should only be changed should an issue arise with the time not syncing of 38

14 Wired Ethernet Configuration The SMS network connection can be configured to obtain an IP Address from the router using DHCP (default) or be set manually to a static IP Address. Savant recommends that a static IP is used to ensure that the IP Address to the SMS will not change. To Set a Static IP Address (Manual Configuration) Select Manual Configuration (Static IP) in the drop-down list. Wired Ethernet Static IP Address Recommendations Select an IP Address outside the range of DHCP assignable addresses. If the router s DHCP range is 1 to 255, use a static IP Address above 255. Example: Use the following Google DNS Addresses to maintain a constant connection with streaming services. Other DNS addresses may not always be available and will cause a loss in streaming service connection. DNS 1: DNS 2: IMPORTANT! Setting these values incorrectly can prevent the SMS from connecting to the network. Ensure that all network information is correct before saving any changes. To obtain network settings from the router (DHCP Configuration) Select Autonomic Configuration (DHCP) in the drop-down list.
