1. About this document The document describes the prerequisites for the Matrix42 OS Deployment based on WinPE. A step by step guide then follows how deployment is prepared and carried out Prerequisites Matrix42 Client Management (v17.0.1). Installed Windows ADK for Windows 10 on the Empirum Master Server, for the WinPE creation. Empirum Master Server runs on a Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016 operating system. The Backend Task Queue requires this to create the WinPE Boot Images Current functionality The current functionality of Matrix42 OS Deployment based on WinPE Import of Matrix42 PreOS packages (especially the Simple OS Deployment package). Creation of a WinPE-based boot configuration. Assignment and configuration of the Matrix42 PreOS package using computer variables. Remarks: The newest version of the article WinPE PreBoot Support is permanently available at A corresponding registration is required Limitations The following restrictions apply when using Matrix42 OS Deployment based on WinPE: Currently, only deployment on UEFI-based x64 computers is supported. Additional required drivers are not considered during deployment. The current Matrix42 PreOS package SimpleOSDeployment supports Windows 10 (64- bit only). 18. October
2. Step by step instructions The following chapter provides a "step by step" guide for using the Matrix42 OS Deployment based on WinPE. In general, this new variant of the deployment is based on a WinPE-based PXE Boot Image, which starts the Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework when booting. The Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework then ensures that the booting computer connects to the assigned Empirum depot and performs the assigned Matrix42 PreOS packets. For the connection to the Empirum depot, the information in the selected agent template is used. The SimpleOsDeployment package is one of these Matrix42 PreOS packages and contains the functionality to perform a simple Windows 10 installation. The SimpleOsDeployment package comes with additional variable definitions that control the installation behavior. The Matrix42 PreOS packages can be imported via the Matrix42 Package Import Tool and are then available as a special software package in Empirum. This allows you to assign the Matrix42 PreOS packages as usual to a computer via the administration, which will then run them during a WinPE boot process. The following sections describe the steps to perform the WinPE-based deployment: Import of Matrix42 PreOS packages (especially the example package SimpleOSDeployment Creation of a WinPE based boot configuration Configuration of the required variables; Assigned configurations and activation Remarks when using Empirum Depot server 2.1. Import of Matrix42 PreOS-Packages This chapter describes the import of Matrix42 PreOS packages and the necessary preparations Preparing to import Matrix42 PreOS packages The Matrix42 PreOS package import can be performed through the Matrix42 Packaging Center. The Matrix42 Packaging Center must be installed. This can be done by assigning and activating the Empirum Packaging Center 17.0 package in the Matrix42 Management Console. After installation, the link to the Empirum Packaging Center appears on the desktop of the computer. 18. October
Import of Matrix42 PreOS-Packages With the installation of the Matrix42 Packing Center the command line tool Matrix42OsPackageImport.exe and the prepared Matrix42 PreOS package SimpleOsDeployment are available. The SimpleOsDeployment package can now be imported as follows: Start the Empirum Packaging Center via the shortcut created on the desktop. The welcome page of the Matrix42 Packaging Center opens, where you can select the Package Import 18. October
Click the Import Package button. This opens a console window with which the Command Line Tool Matrix42OsPackageImport.exe can be started. The selected directory contains the Command Line Tool Matrix42OsPackageImport.exe which can be used to import a Matrix42 PreOS package by specifying the Empirum share, the ODBC connection (connection name, user and password) Now call the Command Line Tool with the following parameters: OsPackages\SimpleOsDeployment 18. October
/U:DatenbankBenutzer /P:DatenbankPasswort /L:ODBCVerbindungsname /E:EmpirumFreigabe Example: Matrix42OsPackageImport.exe OsPackages\SimpleOsDeployment /U:sa /P:empirum /L:Frankfurt /E:c:\empirum Remarks: The parameter /P for the password can be specified in plain text or sync-encrypted. The import of the SimpleOsDeployment package is now complete. Remarks: If an error occurs during the import, you may be able to use can be recognized directly by the error message output. Otherwise you can look in the Matrix42OsPackageImport.log file, which is located next to the Matrix42OsPackageImport.exe. 18. October
Release of the Matrix42 PreOS package After importing the SimpleOsDeployment package, the package must still be released for installation via the vault configuration. To do this, proceed as follows: 1 Open the Matrix42 Management Console and switch to Configuration in the navigation bar and select Software Management > Depot. 2 Open the Matrix42 PreOS Packages tab in the tree structure and select the SimpleOsDeployment package. Remarks: If the newly imported package does not appear yet, the Depot configuration must be updated. To do this, select View > Update from the menu bar. This reads the Depot configuration from the database again. 3 Open the context menu of the new package, its properties. 18. October
4 Under the View tab, the property Release for installation must be checked. 5 Press OK to activate the change. 6 Afterwards, the change in the custody account configuration must still be saved via the menu File > Save. Remarks: In general, it is possible to execute several Matrix42 PreOS packages in sequence when the WinPE based PXE image is booted. The execution sequence of these packages can be controlled globally by the order of the packages in the depot, comparable to other software packages Creating a WinPE based boot configuration The following chapter describes how to use the new WinPE based Empirum Preinstallation Environment configuration. It describes the configuration and generation of a WinPE based configuration Creating a boot configuration In the boot configuration a WinPE based PXE boot image can be created based on the Windows ADK installed on the Empirum Master Server. This requires the following steps: 1 In the navigation bar, switch to Configuration and select Boot Configurations. Click the New button to create a new configuration. 18. October
Symbol definition: - One or more critical specifications are missing or incorrect. - Entries or data have been changed, but not yet saved. Customize the Name and Description fields according to your requirements. Remarks: Only alphanumeric characters (a-z, A-Z and 0-9) are allowed for the name. Names must be unique. The use of reserved names is prohibited. This also includes names that are already used in the boot floppy configuration (EPE 3). The symbol indicates that the entry is not allowed. Select WinPE as the configuration type to create a WinPE based PXE boot image. 18. October
Remarks: If you select WinPE as the configuration type, the selection of the Empirum PE source, dynamic server detection and self-provisioning activation are hidden and are not available in the configuration. These properties are only available under the EPE4 configuration and are not necessary in case of a WinPE Preinstallation Environment. From the Agent Template drop-down box, select the desired agent template. Remarks: The information in the selected Agent Template determines how and with which vault is attempted to connect during OS deployment. Remarks: If no entry is displayed in the Agent Templates selection, first create an Empirum Agent Template via Configuration > Software Management > Empirum Agent. In addition to the user name, password and server name, the settings for the DHCP options are also transferred to the PXE boot image, provided that it has been configured in the Agent Template. The selection can then be updated using the Update button. If several Empirum Agent templates have been created, the first one is always displayed directly - sorted alphabetically. The overview links is updated in real time. However, changes permanently after confirmation with Save. will only be saved If you want to use additional drivers in WinPE, please follow the next steps: Please note: 18. October
At the PXE image generation process of the WinPE based configuration the content of the additional driver folders will be copied into the image and will be accessible at the runtime. Click + at the bottom of the additional driver folder list to add another folder to the list. The 'Browse For Folder' dialog appears and allows you to select a folder. Click OK to confirm the selected folder. The selected folder will be displayed in the list of the additional driver folders. 18. October
If you want to remove an added driver folder you have to click - at the bottom of the additional driver folder list to remove the currently selected driver folder. If all settings have been made to your satisfaction, confirm with Save and then answer the security question with Yes. As with the EPE 4 configuration, not only the configuration is now saved in the database, but also a PXE Boot Image is created directly. After successfully creating the PXE Boot Image, it is displayed with the specified name in Management > Administration under PXE Boot Images and can be used as usual PXE image generation process After saving the Empirum Preinstallation Environment configuration, the automatic creation of the PXE image is taken over by a new Backend Task Queue extension. Afterwards, the PXE boot image can be assigned in the administration as usual Backend task queue The current jobs in the backend task queue can be viewed in the Matrix42 Management Console (EMC) via the following dialog: Matrix42 Management Console> Management > Administration > Administration > Menu > Info > Back-end tasks. The queue entries with the name PE (= Preinstallation Environment) are the requests that are of interest for creating the PXE image. The list shows which requests are currently being processed by the queue. 18. October
Back-end task log The status of the jobs that have already been processed can be viewed in the register Back-end task log. The success of the order can be seen in the Result column. In case of failure, a detailed information is stored in the column Note, which gives information about the error. Remarks: Detailed information is also available in the log file of the backend task queue - this is located under: C:\Program Files\Matrix42\Backend Task Hosting Service\BackendTaskQueueHost64.log 2.3. Assignment in Administration In order for a computer to execute the OS deployment via WinPE, the settings have to be made in the administration. 18. October
The computer to be installed (in the example jup-ref-u4) must be assigned the Matrix42PreOS SimpleOsDeployment package. The computer variables required by SimpleOsDeployment are to be set for deployment. The computer must be assigned the created PXE boot image (WinPEBoot). The operating system variable OS_PACKAGE_SOURCE must be set. The computer must be activated and can then perform deployment. Remarks: In general, it is also possible to assign several Matrix42 PreOS packages, which are then executed in sequence when the WinPE based PXE image is booted. The execution sequence of these packages can be controlled globally by the order of the packages in the depot, comparable to other software packages. The individual steps are now carried out in more detail below: 1 Apply the SimpleOsDeployment package and the WinPE based PXE boot image (in this example WinPEBoot) to the computer. 2 Now set the computer variables required by the SimpleOsDeployment package, that are structured within the SimpleOsDeployment variable: Variables for creating a Local Administrator account LocalUserName (Login name for the local account) LocalUserPassword (Password for the local account) 18. October
LocalUserDisplayName (Display name of the local account) Variables that determine the language SetupUILanguage (Defines the language to use in Windows Setup and Windows Deployment Services (e.g. en-us).) InputLocale (Specifies the input language and the input method for input devices, such as the keyboard layout (e.g. en-us).) SystemLocale (Specifies the default language to use for non-unicode programs (e.g. en-us).) UILanguage (Specifies the language to install that will be used as the default system language to display user interface (UI) items (such as menus, dialog boxes, and help files) (e.g. en-us).) UserLocale (Specifies the per-user settings used for formatting dates, times, currency, and numbers in a Windows installation (e.g. en-us).) Variables that define the credentials for the domain join DomainJoinCredentialsUser (Name of the user to be used) DomainJoinCredentialsDomain (Domain specification for the new user) DomainJoinCredentialsPassword (Password of the user to be used) Here are the values used for the example: 3 Select the operating system source to use. To do this, switch to the branch of the operating system variable and select the variable OS_PACKAGE_SOURCES. 18. October
4 Press the Edit button. 5 All existing operating system imports are displayed as the value of the variable. Select a Windows 10 (64-bit) operating system import and confirm with OK. 18. October
Remarks: If the list of values is empty, this may be due to the fact that no operating system has yet been imported. In this case, you import Windows 10 (64-bit) as usual via Matrix42 Management Console > Configuration > OS Installer > Import. For a detailed description, see the online help on Importing Operating System Files. If you already have operating system imports and the list is still empty, please execute the function Read list from hard disk via the Import Matrix42 Management Console > Configuration > OS Installer > Import > Menu > Software > Read list from hard disk. 6 Confirm the variable adaptation again with OK. 7 Make sure that the FQDN value is set in the properties of the computer. This value is used for the domain join. 8 Open the computer's properties from the computer's context menu. The FQDN value can be set if the Overwrite property is checked. 9 Confirm the changes with OK. 10 Once all assignments have been made, the computer can now be activated via the context menu. 11 In the activation wizard that opens, activate PULL via DDS/DDC (software packages only) and activate PXE (re-install computer). 18. October
12 Confirm the Activation Wizard with Finish. 13 The activated computer can now be booted via PXE and will load the created WinPE based PXE boot image. 18. October
14 When the loaded WinPE is started on the computer, the Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework, which executes the assigned SimpleOsDeployment package, starts automatically. Attention: In the current version, manual intervention in the execution of the Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework is possible. This should enable you to analyze the processes as easily as possible and, if necessary, to make it possible to correct it. A manual intervention can be performed if necessary, but can cause the installation to be terminated. 18. October
15 When the SimpleOsDeployment package is executed, the Windows installation is also executed. 18. October
16 After the various installation phases have been completed, the operating system is installed on the computer. After all OS packages have been executed the system boots for the last time and PXE will be deactivated for this client. Next time the system is not booting from network anymore and nothing will be executed anymore. An operating system has been installed and is booting then. 18. October
17 And finally Matrix42 Empirum Agent is also installed in the system and is running. Which is represented by a tray icon on the taskbar. 18. October
18. October
3. Matrix42 OS Deployment with WinPE at Empirum Depot Server scenario It is possible to use the Matrix42 OS Deployment with WinPE at the Empirum Depot Server scenario. Please note the following points: Using the correct Agent template in the Boot Configuration Using the additional Empirum Sync-Template at the Empirum Depot The following chapters carry out these points more precisely Agent Template at Empirum Depot Server scenario The Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework in the WinPE based PXE image takes the information to connect to the Empirum-Server from the Agent-Template. If a computer should be deployed via an Empirum Depot, the used Boot Configuration must use an Agent Template that uses the Empirum-Depot as the fallback server Additional Empirum Sync template The Matrix42 Universal Agent Framework in the WinPE based PXE image uses a configuration file DeviceMapping.xml that is located at the Empirum-Share to determine the computer name by the given MAC address of the computer. A Backend Task Queue extension creates this file at Empirum-Share of the Master server. If the WinPE based OS Deployment is used with an Empirum Depot, you have to assign another Sync-template ESubdepot_DeviceMapping to this Depot. The Depot must be activated to commit the changes. 18. October
4. Driver Integration for Operating System Installation Matrix42 OS Deployment based on WinPE provides with SimpleOsDeployment package a simple option to deploy Windows 10 on a client computer. An extension of drivers provisioned by Windows itself is initially not provided in this package. If a device requires drivers which are not contained in Windows, then that can be implemented using other Matrix42 PreOS packages. Following Matrix42 PreOS packages are used in that context: DiskPartitioning DriverIntegration WindowsInstallation DiskPartitioning package deletes partitions of the first hard disk of a client computer and creates required partitions then. Partitioning can be configured using variables of the package. With DriverIntegration package the system partition is prepared for Windows so that drivers for the client computer will be taken over. With WindowsInstallation package the actual Windows installation is carried out and there drivers, which are prepared by DriverIntegration package, will be considered. Remarks: Deployment using introduced packages is limited to the first hard disk of a client computer. Packages and their usage are described in the following chapters DiskPartitioning Package First package in the order is DiskPartitioning, which processes partitioning of a hard disk. Partitioning configuration is controlled by package variables, which are described below. 18. October
For partitioning there are two options (absolute or percentage-wise partitioning), which are controlled by variable DiskPartitioning.InterpretSizeInputAsPercentage. Setting its value to 1, values from variables DiskPartitioning.SizeDataPartition and DiskPartitioning.SizeSystemPartition will be read as percentage Absolute Partitioning Should fixed amount of GB be used then following setting has to be configured. DiskPartitioning.InterpretSizeInputAsPercentage = 0 Remarks: DiskPartitioning packages will end with handled error - client will be rebooted, if the hard disk is too small for configured sizes SizeSystemPartition SizeSystemPartition defines partition size of system partition in gigabyte in case of absolute partitioning. Example: SizeSystemPartition = 150 DiskPartitioning will so try to create a system partition of 150 GB size. 18. October
SizeDataPartition SizeDataPartition defines partition size of system partition in gigabyte in case of absolute partitioning. Example: SizeDataPartition = 400 DiskPartitioning package will so try to create a data partition of 400 GB size right after the system partition Percentage-wise Partitioning Should a relative amount of a hard disk be used, then following setting has to be configured. DiskPartitioning.InterpretSizeInputAsPercentage = 1 Values in SizeSystemPartition and SizeDataPartition will be read as percentage in this case. Example: SizeSystemPartition = 100 SizeDataPartition = 0 DiskPartitioning package creates only a system partition, which will take the whole available space on hard disk. SizeSystemPartition = 50 SizeDataPartition = 50 DiskPartitioning package creates a system partition and a data partition, which will take equal amount of available space on hard disk DriverIntegration Package DriverIntegration package deploys content of assigned driver archive on a hard disk that has been prepared for this step by the DiskPartitioning package. And following WindowsInstallation package will then use those prepared files for device driver installation while the operating system installation. Therefor DriverIntegration package depends on DiskPartitioning package. On the other side WindowsInstallation package can be used without DriverIntegration - if no additional device drivers are needed for the operating system installation. But it also depends on DiskPartitioning in that case. A driver archive is assigned using 'DriverArchiveFileName' package variable in a configuration. Which is described below. 18. October
For driver integration required drivers have to be wrapped up in a CAB or a ZIP file. Those files have to be placed on server under '\\%EmpirumServer%\Configurator$\Packages\Matrix42\OsPackages\Drivers\'. If there is no Drivers folder, it has to be created first. Variable DriverIntegration.DriverArchiveFileName is used then to define which driver archive file from server share should be deployed on client. Use the file name of the archive as value for it. Example: DriverArchiveFileName = vmware.zip Driver Archives As container for driver archives the folder Drivers under '\\%EmpirumServer%\Configurator$\Packages\Matrix42\OsPackages\' is used. It is there together with all imported PreOS packages and has to be created manually if not already available. Required driver files have to be combined to a CAB or ZIP file, if it is not already the case. The name of used archive file has to be set in package variable DriverArchiveFileName. While execution of DriverIntegration package the content of the configured driver archive will be deployed on the client computer. So several different driver archives can be placed within that Drivers folder for different configurations. 18. October
4.3. WindowsInstallation Package WindowsInstallation package is to configure like the SimpleOsDeployment package (take a look at Chapter 2 - Step by step instructions). Variables are configured in three steps: Set package variables Variables for creation of a local administrator user LocalUserName (Username for local user account) LocalUserPassword (Password for local user account) LocalUserDisplayName (Display name for local user account) Language variables SetupUILanguage (Defines language, which is to use in Windows Setup and Windows Deployment Services. Example: en-us) InputLocale (Input language and input method for input devices. For example a keyboard layout. Example: en-us) SystemLocale (Standard language, which should be used for non-unicode applications. Example: en-us) UILanguage (Defines which language should be installed, that will be used as system's default language for all user interface elements (as menus, dialog fields and help files). Example: en-us) UserLocale (Specifies user-specific settings for regional formats of date, time, currency and numbers in a Windows installation. Example: en-us) Variables which define credentials for domain join DomainJoinCredentialsUser (Username of the user) DomainJoinCredentialsDomain (Domain name of the user) DomainJoinCredentialsPassword (Password of the user) OS_PACKAGE_SOURCE variable has to be set to define operating system source. FQDN client property is to set Order of Execution within Depot Configuration Should that option of Windows Deployments be used the order of used packages has to be ensured. So that these Matrix42 PreOS Packages are also executed in the correct order. To define the order of execution the order within depot configuration is used. 18. October
The order of packages must look as following: DiskPartitioning DriverIntegration WindowsInstallation Changes of order in the depot configuration have to be saved. 18. October
5. FAQ Question: When importing a Matrix42 PreOS package I get the error message: "Software exists in the Database. Operation canceled." - What can I do? Answer: The Empirum database already contains an OS package with the same GUID. OS packages must have a unique GUID. Usually, an attempt is made to re-import an OS package, which leads to this error. Therefore, first remove the OS package from the Depot configuration in the Matrix42 Management Console, save these changes and try the import again. Question: When importing a Matrix42 PreOS package I get the error message: "Invalid or inexistent metadata file name!" - What can I do? Answer: The import could not find the necessary EmpirumPackageData.xml file. This must be located in the directory that was given to the import as package source path (in this example OsPackages). Check if the package source path specification (first 18. October
parameter of Matrix42OsPackageImport. exe Tools) is correct. In this case OsPackages\SimpleOsDeployment would be correct. Question: I have assigned the SimpleOsDeployment package after the successful import and variable declaration and have activated the client, but the package does not start and the operating system is not installed. Answer: Please make sure that the SimpleOsDeployment has also been released for installation.
