5 Introduction 1 Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is the Microsoft Windows feature that allows two or more computers to share a single Internet connection. This guide is prepared as a supplement to the Microsoft documentation supporting ICS. The instructions will enable you to set up a simple ICS network using a DIRECWAY Two-Way system. The computer with DIRECWAY installed will share its connection to the Internet with other computers on a Local Area Network (LAN). This is the host computer. All computers that acquire the DIRECWAY Internet connection from the host are called clients. An ICS network consists of one host and any number of clients. Note: You must install the DIRECWAY system before you configure ICS. This guide presumes you have installed DIRECWAY and are familiar with the supporting documentation. 6 Figure 1 shows a typical configuration with the four types of Windows platforms supported. You must configure and cable your network according to the instructions provided by the LAN hardware manufacture. There are two models of the DIRECWAY product: Two-Way and One-Way. ICS is intended only for use with a DIRECWAY Two-Way satellite connection. The two-way system is capable of both receiving data from and transmitting data to the satellite for access to the Internet. It uses a receive modem to receive data and a transmit modem to transmit data. The one-way system receives data from the satellite using a receive modem but transmits data to the Internet using a telephone modem. Both are shown in Figure 2. After these features are working, enable file and printer sharing if desired. For larger or more complex networks, follow the instructions provided with your network hardware vendor and/or your network software vendor. 2 Introduction

7 Note: The Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature is intended only for use with a DIRECWAY Two-Way satellite connection. ICS will function with a DIRECWAY One-Way satellite connection but this configuration is not supported by Hughes Network Systems, Inc. System requirements Please verify that your host computer meets the following requirements before proceeding. Pentium II with a 333 MHz processor or better Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), Windows Millennium (Me), Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XP 64 MB RAM (98 SE and Me), 128 MB RAM (Windows 2000 and XP) 800x600 pixel display or better CD-ROM drive PCI or AGP video adapter 20 MB free hard disk space Available USB port 56 kbps modem Analog telephone line (for system setup) The client computers connected through ICS must meet the same requirements as above with the exception of operating systems. The following are valid for client computers: Windows 98 Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Windows Millennium (Me) Windows 2000 Professional Windows XP Introduction 3

8 Five stages to configure ICS There are five stages to configure ICS for DIRECWAY: Install DIRECWAY on the computer that will be the host (see page 5). Verify network communications between the host and client computers (see page 7). Configure ICS on the host computer (see page 11). Configure client computers to access the Internet through the DIRECWAY host computer using Microsoft ICS (see page 33). Configure Microsoft Outlook Express and Internet Explorer on the client computers (see page 45). Notes: Configuration of ICS varies depending on the type of Windows operating system. When following these instructions, follow the correct instructions for both host and client computers. Stages 1 and 2 may be reversed if the network hardware exists before DIRECWAY is installed. If neither DIRECWAY nor the networks is installed, set up the network hardware (but not ICS) and verify connectivity before installing DIRECWAY on the host. DIRECWAY must be uninstalled on computers that will become clients. During the procedures in this guide, you may experience additional screens if ICS has been previously configured. 4 Introduction

9 Install DIRECWAY on the host computer Follow the instructions in the ReadMeFirst guide and the Installation Guide for Indoor Equipment and Software to install DIRECWAY. Before proceeding to install ICS, do the following: 1. Restart your computer. 2. Verify that you can access and surf the Internet using DIRECWAY. 3. Proceed to Verifying communications on page 7. Additional help resources This guide is prepared as a supplement to the Microsoft documentation supporting ICS. If you need additional help, see the Microsoft manuals or web site at HUGHES can provide limited support if you need more assistance. If you purchased DIRECWAY through one of our retail channels: Access the Help files by right-clicking the DW icon and selecting Help from the pop-up list. 11 Verifying communications 2 Determining your IP address Note: The host must be restarted after installation of DIRECWAY to refresh network connections. Failure to do this will result in incorrect results in this stage. 1. On the host computer, open the Run dialog box by selecting Start Run. Type Command and click OK. Figure 3: Launching a DOS command prompt 2. In the DOS command window type ipconfig and press Enter. A list of Ethernet adapters and their IP addresses will be displayed as shown in Figure 4. 12 3. Record the IP address of the Network Interface Card that connects the host computer to clients. Include the period between numbers.you will need this address below in Step 3. IP Address Notes: The IP address of this adapter typically starts with as shown in Figure 4. If the host computer has any additional Network Interface Cards, Modems, or VPN clients, the list will differ from that shown above. 4. Type exit and press enter to close the window. Testing communications between host and clients 1. Move to a client computer of the home network. 2. Open the Run dialog box by selecting Start Run. Type Command and click OK. 3. Try to communicate with the host computer by typing ping followed by a space and the IP address that was previously recorded in Step 3, above, including periods. Press Enter. The ping command is a standard utility that sends and receives communications between computers. Figure 5 shows a successful attempt, and Figure 6 shows an unsuccessful attempt. 13 Figure 6: Results of an unsuccessful ping 4. If the client fails to ping the host, there are issues with either the network hardware or configuration. Check the LAN connections, refer to the instructions that were provided with your network hardware, and retry the ping test in Step 3. Note: DIRECWAY cannot accept help calls for network problems. Consult a network professional or your network vendor for assistance. 5. Close the DOS window by typing Exit and pressing Enter. 6. Test all other client computers until all have successfully pinged the host. 7. If you have successfully established communications with the host, go to Configuring the ICS host on page 11. Note: Do not continue to the next stage if any client cannot ping the host. Verifying communications 9

15 Configuring the ICS host 3 Instructions for this stage vary depending upon your operating system: For Windows 98 SE go to page 11. For Windows Me, go to page 18. For Windows 2000 Professional, go to page 24. For Windows XP, go to page 27. Configuring ICS for a Windows 98 SE host 1. Open the Control Panel by selecting Start Setting Control Panel and double click the Add/Remove Programs icon. See Figure 7. 16 2. The Add/Remove Programs Properties window is displayed. 3. Click Windows Setup tab. A list of windows components is displayed. 4. Locate and click the Internet Tools component as shown in Figure 8. Figure 8: Selecting Internet Tools for Windows 98 SE 5. Click Details at the bottom of the window. The Internet Tools component list will be displayed as shown in Figure Configuring the ICS host

The Internet Tools window will close 8. Click Apply on the bottom right corner of the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Note: Windows may request the Microsoft Windows 98 SE installation CD-ROM to install the Internet Connection Sharing Component. Do this if prompted. Configuring the ICS host 13

18 Note: During the installation of the Internet Connection Sharing component, a Version Conflict dialog box may appear. Keep the existing file by clicking once on Yes as shown in Figure 10. When Internet Connection Sharing component is completely installed, The Internet Connection Sharing Wizard will automatically launch as shown in Figure 11. 19 1. Click Next to continue. 2. Select High speed connection when prompted for Internet connection type. Click Next to continue. 3. A list of network adapters will be displayed. Click Satellite USB Device and click Next to continue to the next window as shown in Figure 12. Figure 12: Selecting Satellite USB device for Windows 98 SE 4. If prompted to create a client Configuration Disk, click Next on the first screen as shown in Figure 13. 20 5. The client Configuration Disk is not necessary for ICS to work with DIRECWAY. Click Cancel to continue as shown in Figure 14. Figure 14: Declining to create a client Connection Disk for Windows 98 SE 6. Click Finish to finish the Internet Connection Wizard. 7. Windows will prompt to restart. Click Yes to restart the computer. You must restart the computer at this time. 16 Configuring the ICS host

21 8. When the host computer has finished restarting and if you have successfully installed ICS, DIRECWAY will display a Satellite Diagnostic Interface Window as shown in Figure 15. This can be used to optimize ICS for DIRECWAY. Follow the instructions. Figure 15: Satellite Diagnostics for 98 SE 9. After Windows has completed restarting, launch the IE browser. Verify that the host computer is still able to access the Internet. If you cannot access the Internet, return to page 14 and rerun the ICS Wizard by launching: Start Programs Accessories Internet Tools ICS Wizard Check that Step 2 and Step 3 are performed correctly. Proceed to Configuring ICS clients on page 33. Configuring the ICS host 17

22 Configuring ICS for a Windows Me host 1. Open the Control Panel by selecting Start Setting Control Panel and double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. See Figure 16. 23 5. Click Details at the bottom of the window. The Communications component list will be displayed as shown in Figure Click the check box to the left of the Internet Connection Sharing. Click Apply on the bottom right corner of the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Note: Windows may request the installation CD-ROM to install the Internet Connection Sharing Component. Do this if prompted. Configuring the ICS host 19

24 When Internet Connection Sharing component is completely installed, the Home Network Wizard will automatically launch as shown in Figure 19. Click Yes, this computer uses the following, and then click A direct connection to my ISP using the following device as shown in Figure 20. 25 3. Click the dropdown button to display the list of eligible devices. Select Satellite USB Device and click Next to continue to the next window. 4. Select Yes. 5. Select the network interface card that connects your host to the other computers. A 3Com device is shown as an example in Figure 21. Your device may be of a different brand. 6. Click Next. 26 7. If prompted to create a Home Networking Setup Disk, click No as shown in Figure 22 and click Next. The client Configuration Setup Disk is not necessary for ICS to work with DIRECWAY. When the host computer has finished restarting, Windows will display a dialog box indicating that Home Networking is set up as shown in Figure 25. Verify that the host computer is still able to access the Internet. If you cannot access the Internet, return to page 20 and rerun the Home Networking Wizard by launching: Start Programs Accessories Communications Home Network Wizard Check that Step 2 through Step 6 are performed correctly. Proceed to Configuring ICS clients on page 33. Configuring the ICS host 23

28 Configuring ICS for a Windows 2000 Professional host 1. Open the Control Panel by selecting Start Setting Control Panel and double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon. Note: If the Network icon is not shown, go to the Detail view. Figure 26: Double-clicking the Network icon for Windows A list of Network and dial-up connections will be displayed. See Figure 27. There must be a minimum of two connections listed. These two connections must be present. If not, the network is not installed correctly. 29 Note: If you do not get the detailed directory view above, select View Details. 3. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon that corresponds with the Satellite USB Device and select Properties. You can determine which one is the Satellite USB device by checking the details under the Device Name column. Note: You can also determine the correct device by moving the cursor over the icon to obtain the balloon help or by checking the bottom left status bar as shown in Figure Click the General tab. A list of installed components will appear. Ensure that the Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are checked as installed. 30 5. If the NetBEUI Protocol component is installed, uninstall it. 6. Click the Sharing tab. Place a check next to the Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection by clicking the check box. Click OK to continue. Read the box and if your network was previously configured for static IP addresses, set the client computers to obtain their IP addresses automatically as described starting on page 33. 31 8. Restart the computer if it does not do so automatically. The computer must be restarted at this point to reinitialize the connections. 9. Confirm that the host can access the Internet. If it cannot, return to Configuring ICS for a Windows 2000 Professional host on page 24 and repeat the steps. Check that the correct device is selected in Step 3 and Figure 26. Proceed to See Configuring ICS clients on page 33. Configuring ICS for a Windows XP host 1. Open the Control Panel by selecting Start Control Panel. 32 3. A list of Network and dial-up connections will be displayed. See Figure 32. There must be a minimum of two LAN connections listed. One connection will be the DIRECWAY Satellite USB Device and the other will be the network interface that connects the host with the other computers on the network. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon that corresponds with the Satellite USB Device and select Properties.You can determine which one is the Satellite USB device by reading the Details box in the lower left part of the window. Note: You can also determine the correct device by moving the cursor over the icon to obtain the balloon help. 5. A list of installed components will appear on the General tab. Ensure that the Client for Microsoft Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are checked as installed. See Figure 33. Note: For assistance installing these components see the Windows XP help files. Restart the computer even if not prompted by Windows to do so. Failure to do so may prevent the host from communicating with the clients until the host is restarted. Confirm that the host can access the Internet. If it cannot, repeat the steps starting on page 27. Go to Configuring ICS clients on page 33. Configuring the ICS host 31

37 Configuring ICS clients 4 This chapter provides instructions to configure client computers to access the Internet through DIRECWAY on the host computer using ICS Instructions for this stage vary depending upon the client s operating system. For Windows 98 SE and Windows Me, go to page 33. For Windows 2000 Professional, go to page 37. For Windows XP, go to page 41. Configuring Windows 98 SE and Me clients to access the host 1. On the client computer, open the Control Panel by selecting Start Setting Control Panel and double click the Network icon as shown in Figure 36. 38 2. A list of Network components will be displayed. 3. Click TCP/IP associated with your Network Interface Card (NIC) and then click Properties as shown in Figure 37. 39 5. Under the WINS Configuration tab, select Use DHCP for WINS Resolution by clicking the radio button. See Figure 39. Figure 39: Selecting DHCP for Windows 98 SE and Me 6. Click the Gateway tab and remove any installed gateways by selecting the gateway(s) and click Remove as shown in Figure 40. 40 7. Select the Disable DNS radio button on the DNS Configuration tab. See Figure 41. Figure 41: Disabling DNS for Windows 98 SE and Me 8. Click OK to accept the updates for the TCP/IP properties 9. Click OK to close the list of network components. Windows may request the installation CD-ROM to complete updating the TCP/IP settings. 10. Restart the computer if it does not do so automatically. Go to Configuring browser and on page Configuring ICS clients

41 Configuring Windows 2000 clients to access the host 1. On the client computer, open the Control Panel by selecting Start Setting Control Panel and double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon. See Figure 42. 42 3. Right click the NIC icon and select Properties. The Local Area Connection Properties window opens. 4. Ensure that the Client for MS Networks and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are installed and checked. If NetBEUI is installed, uninstall it. 43 6. Ensure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically options are selected. If not, click the radio button next to each. Figure 45: Selecting TCP/IP properties for Windows 2000 Configuring ICS clients 39

44 7. Click Advanced. 8. Under the IP Settings, DNS, and WINS tabs. ensure that only the DHCP Enabled setting is listed. No other addresses should be listed in any of these windows. 45 Configuring Windows XP client to access the host 1. At the client computer, open the Control Panel by selecting Start Control Panel and double click the Network Connections icon. 46 3. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon that corresponds with the Network adapter that connects the computer to the network and select properties 4. On the General tab, ensure that Client for Microsoft Network and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are installed and checked as shown in Figure 49.. 48 7. Click the Advanced button. Ensure that only the DHCP setting is Enabled. Click OK to continue. 8. Click OK to close the TPC/IP Properties window as shown in Figure 51. 49 Configuring browser and 5 This chapter describes how to run the Internet Connection Wizard. The wizard installs both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Notes: The screens you see may vary depending on the version of Internet Explorer you are using. You may also see additional screens than those presented here if you have an account set up on this computer. The instructions in this section will create one account. To configure additional accounts, repeat the instructions completely starting with Step 1 below. Repeat for as many accounts as you wish to create. You may see additional screens than those presented here if you have an account set up on this computer. 1. Launch the Internet Connection Wizard by opening the run dialog box, selecting Start->Run, and typing inetwiz in the space provided. Click OK. Ensure that the checkboxes for Automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended) and Use automatic configuration script are unchecked. 4. Click Next.
