Overview of the VMware image of the InfoSphere Streams Quick Start Edition IBM InfoSphere Streams Version 3.2 Quick Start Edition can help you learn the concepts and technologies of InfoSphere Streams. You can download and install this edition for free. InfoSphere Streams enables you to capture, analyze, and act on business data from a broad range of sources. Using real-time analytic processing (RTAP) technology, InfoSphere Streams can continuously analyze massive volumes of streaming data in real time, with extremely fast response times. In addition to reporting changes in data, InfoSphere Streams can notify users and systems of data changes, and take specific actions to respond to those changes in real time. You can use the Quick Start Edition to experiment with the features of InfoSphere Streams by using real data and applications. The Quick Start Edition does not have data-limit restrictions or a time limit on its license. The license is a non-warranted program license and should not be used in production. Product support is not available for the Quick Start Edition. You can use the Quick Start Edition to develop and run applications that process information in data streams. To develop streams processing applications, InfoSphere Streams provides the IBM Streams Processing Language (SPL), the Streams Studio integrated development environment (IDE), and toolkits. The InfoSphere Streams runtime system enables you to run your applications on a single host or a distributed set of hosts. The following optional software that is available with IBM InfoSphere Streams Version 3.2 is not available with the Quick Start Edition: v IBM InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition v IBM accelerators v IBM DB2 Copyright IBM Corp

9 Chapter 2. Documentation for the Quick Start Edition The Quick Start Edition documentation provides information about installing and using the Quick Start Edition. The InfoSphere Streams Information Center provides more detailed product information, if needed. After you start the Quick Start Edition, you can open the InfoSphere Streams Information Center from the Quick Start Edition VMware image desktop. If you have internet access, the information center on the IBM website opens. If you do not have internet access, a local version of the information center opens. The most current version of the product documentation is available in the InfoSphere Streams Information Center ( streams/v3r2) on the IBM website. 11 Chapter 3. System requirements for the Quick Start Edition Before you download the Quick Start Edition VMware image, ensure that you satisfy the minimum system requirements. Table 1. Minimum system requirements for the Quick Start Edition VMware image Component Minimum requirements Comments Operating system 64-bit operating system that VMware is supported on the following operating systems: supports VMware v Apple Mac OS X v Linux v Microsoft Windows Memory 2 GB The amount of memory that is required by InfoSphere Streams is dependent on the applications that are developed and deployed. This minimum requirement is based on the memory requirements of the Commodity Purchasing sample application and other samples that are provided with the product. Disk space VMware product 8 GB VMware product that runs on a 64-bit operating system To run the Quick Start Edition VMware image, one of the following VMware products must be installed on your system: v For Apple Mac OS X, VMware Fusion 4, or later v For Microsoft Windows or Linux, you can use the following products: VMware Player 5, or later VMware Workstation 8, or later VMware Server You can download the VMware Player for free. Ensure that virtualization is enabled for your operating system. For Windows operating systems, you might need to update the BIOS to enable virtualization. 13 Chapter 4. Downloading the Quick Start Edition The Quick Start Edition is available on the InfoSphere Streams Quick Start Edition website. Procedure 1. Go to the Quick Start Edition website ( infosphere/streams/quick-start/). 2. Download the Quick Start Edition. There are two download options: v To install the Quick Start Edition on a Linux system that is supported by InfoSphere Streams, download the Native Software Installation option. v To install a VMware image of the Quick Start Edition on an Apple Mac OS X, Linux, or Microsoft Windows system, download the VMware Image option. 15 Chapter 5. Installing and starting the Quick Start Edition After extracting the contents of the Quick Start Edition VMware image.zip file, you can start the image and open the desktop. Before you begin Your InfoSphere Streams ID for the Quick Start Edition is streamsadmin, and your password is passw0rd. The root password is also passw0rd. Procedure 1. Extract the contents of the vmware-streamsv qse-v1.zip file. This.zip file contains the following files: v InfoSphere-Streams-V qse.vmdk v InfoSphere-Streams-V qse.vmx 2. Start the Quick Start Edition VMware image by double-clicking the InfoSphere-Streams-V qse.vmx file. If this is the first time that you have started the image, several prompts are displayed. Otherwise, status messages are displayed and the Quick Start Edition VMware image desktop opens. 3. The first time you start the image, respond to the following prompts: a. Indicate whether you want to upgrade the virtual machine. b. Select I copied it to indicate that the virtual machine was copied. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 splash screen is displayed, and then followed by several screens of status messages. c. For the language, select English (USA), and then press the Enter key to continue. The image is not available in other languages. d. To continue, accept all of the following license agreements: v Red Hat Enterprise Linux v VMware Tools v IBM InfoSphere Streams v IBM developerworks To navigate in the license agreement screens, use the Tab and Arrow keys. Press the Enter key to continue. After you accept the license agreements, status messages are displayed and the Quick Start Edition VMware image desktop opens. Exploring the Quick Start Edition VMware image desktop The Quick Start Edition VMware image desktop provides access to InfoSphere Streams documentation, features, and development resources. Procedure v To access the InfoSphere Streams documentation, click InfoSphere Streams Information Center. If you have internet access, the information center on the IBM website opens. If you do not have internet access, a local version of the information center opens. In addition to the Information Center, the desktop includes links to the following resources: InfoSphere Streams Website InfoSphere Streams Forum InfoSphere Streams Wiki InfoSphere Streams Support v To create and manage InfoSphere Streams runtime instances, click Streams Instances Manager to open the Instances Manager wizard. An instance with the default name of streams has been created for you. You can start this instance using the Instances Manager. If you need assistance using the Instances Manager, click Help on the wizard page. For more information about instances, see Creating and managing instances for InfoSphere Streams in the Information Center. v To open the InfoSphere Streams Console, click Streams Console. You can also open the Streams Console by using the Instances Manager. The Streams Console is a web-based graphical user interface that you can use to monitor and manage an InfoSphere Streams instance. For more information about using the Streams Console, see Accessing and using the InfoSphere Streams Console in the Information Center. v To open InfoSphere Streams Studio, click Streams Studio (Eclipse). Streams Studio is an Eclipse-based development environment that enables you to create, edit, visualize, test, debug, and run streams processing applications. After you open Streams Studio, the Task Launcher for Big Data displays. To explore Streams Studio, review the options, task descriptions, and resources on the Overview page of the task launcher. All of the Quick Start Edition samples have been imported into Streams Studio and are ready to use. v To learn about the samples that are included with the Quick Start Edition VMware image, click Streams Samples. A file displays that describes the available samples. The Commodity Purchasing sample application is a complete end-to-end example of a streams processing application that runs against live data and provides a user interface. For more information about using this sample, see the Commodity Purchasing sample application documentation in the Information Center. v To go to the IBM developerworks Streams Exchange website, click developerworks Streams Exchange. The Streams Exchange is a place for InfoSphere Streams application developers to share code and ideas with others. Copyright IBM Corp

18 v To use the InfoSphere Streams streamtool command-line interface, click Terminal for streamsadmin to open a terminal window. You can perform InfoSphere Streams tasks using a graphical user interface or the streamtool command-line interface. For example, you can monitor and manage an InfoSphere Streams instance by using the Streams Console, Streams Studio, or the streamtool command-line interface.
