3 Introduction This document outlines the steps recommended for installing Visual Studio 2013 in preparation for use with Agile Business Suite (AB Suite ) 5.0 Developer. Certain prerequisites needed for installing Visual Studio 2013 may be required or installed depending on your existing environment. This document describes the process, where prior versions of SQL Server and Visual Studio exist on the server. Issues arising from existing software will be noted, and can be ignored for clean environment installations. Where possible, it is recommended that the Visual Studio 2013 installation is done on a clean environment. As mentioned in the AB Suite 5.0 Developer Release Notes, due to compatibility issues between some versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server, on a server that requires both Visual Studio 2013 and SQL Server 2014, it is essential that you install Visual Studio with the required Update before installing SQL Server. Note: AB Suite 5.0 Developer cannot be installed on the same machine as AB Suite 2.0, AB Suite 3.0, or AB Suite 4.0 Developer or Runtime. If you are trying to install AB Suite 5.0 Developer, it is important that you do so, on a machine WITHOUT AB Suite 2.0, 3.0, or 4.0 components previous releases of AB Suite must be uninstalled. Versions Visual Studio 2013 Professional Edition Update3 from MSDN Subscription is used for the screenshots. AB Suite Developer does not support other editions of Visual Studio such as Test Professional Edition or Express Edition. Other releases of Visual Studio 2013 Professional Edition may have slightly different screenshots. Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012 all have User Account Control (UAC) enabled by default for enhanced security. Many installation procedures on these operating systems require Administrative privileges and an understanding of how UAC works. In the examples below, Windows 7 SP1 is used. Screens may differ slightly if you are using other Operating Systems. Please refer to the latest AB Suite software qualification matrix when considering the operating system to use because there are support restrictions with certain combinations. Installation Process 1. Shutdown Programs The installation process manipulates the Operating System environment and will affect programs using the.net Framework. It is recommended that you close any programs that you may be running to avoid installation issues. Reboots may be required during the installation process. 3

4 2. Beginning the installation Estimates for the time to install Visual Studio 2013 and the required update are provided in the following steps. The total setup time may vary, impacted by many factors, such as whether a version of Visual Studio 2013 that includes the required update is installed, or whether Visual Studio and the required update are being installed separately. A reasonable estimate of the overall time to complete the installation described below is 90 minutes. This estimated time does not include the time required to download the required software for the installation. 2.1 Right-click vs_professional.exe and select Run as administrator. 2.2 Accept the terms and conditions, and if necessary, verify your product key, and enter the Name of the user that the Visual Studio 2013 installation belongs to. 2.3 Click Next to continue. 4

5 3. Selecting Visual Studio features AB Suite Developer makes use of Debugger, which requires the Microsoft Foundation Classes for C++ feature to be installed. The other optional features shown in the below screenshot are not required for use with AB Suite Developer 5.0. The features are selected by default. You can deselect the features that you will not be using. 3.1 Select features that are required for your development environment for any custom or third party programs, ensuring that sufficient disk space is available. For example, Client Tools development might require Microsoft Web Developer Tools if you are developing for Client Tools in the same environment, you may need to select this option. 5

6 3.2 Click INSTALL to continue Visual Studio 2013 installation. 6

7 Note: There are a number of prerequisites that are required..net Framework is the main prerequisite, and may have been pre-installed by another application. The installation takes a while to install all the components and prerequisites. Note that there are many components added even for a minimum requirement installation. The installation takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Assuming there are no issues, a setup completion screen appears, as shown below. 7

8 3.3 Click Restart Now to restart the machine or close the setup dialog box to restart later. 8

9 4. Installing Visual Studio 2013 Update3 AB Suite 5.0 does not support the base release of Visual Studio 2013, because it requires some important functionality provided by Update2 or higher. The following steps illustrate the installation of Visual Studio 2013 Update3. If your Visual Studio 2013 installation does not include Update2 or higher, then you must download this separately. The instructions below assume that you are downloading the update from Microsoft separately. At the time of writing, Update4 was available at: Please ensure you have the correct link for download. Important Note: Before you click Install, ensure that you have a reliable internet connection. The installer will need to download multiple packages and manage the installation of each package. For this reason, it is recommended that you get a copy of Visual Studio 2013 with Update2 or higher already included avoiding these additional steps. There are several ways of avoiding unnecessary repeats of this process for production deployment and distribution. You can pass a /createlayout parameter to the installer, and it will download all the necessary files to a specified target directory make sure sufficient disk space is available. This approach is recommended if you are planning to upgrade multiple machines and want to avoid excessive download traffic. An ISO image is also available for download you will need to burn this to a DVD after downloading. This approach requires a download manager that can handle a large file, and is the approach that is used in the steps that follow. Take some time to read the release notes they are particularly important if you have multiple Visual Studio 2013 editions installed, or have tried pre-release or beta versions of Visual Studio. These instructions assume that you are installing Visual Studio 2013 for the first time. 4.1 Download the Visual Studio 2013 Update3 ISO image to a location on your hard drive, and then use it to burn a DVD or mount on a virtual drive. 4.2 On the DVD, run the installer, VS exe as an Administrator. Note: If you are installing Visual Studio on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2012, right-click the file and then select Run as administrator. If necessary, allow the request through UAC to arrive at the installation splash screen. 4.3 Accept the license agreement. 9

10 4.4 Click INSTALL to initiate the Update3 installation The subsequent installation takes approximately 40 minutes to complete. 10

12 A system reboot might be required after installation, if there are other Microsoft programs open. 4.5 Close the dialog box to complete the installation. 4.6 Restart your machine, if prompted. 5. Configuring Visual Studio 2013 After installing Visual Studio 2013 Update3, you will need to configure it. This will occur the first time Visual Studio 2013 is initiated. Note: AB Suite 5.0 is qualified and tested for more than one operating system, such as Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows Hence, the way you initiate Visual Studio and the icons available for the various operating systems may vary. For this first initiation of Visual Studio 2013, the Choose Default Environment Settings dialog box appears. In this dialog box, you can choose to migrate settings from a previous version - this is useful if you are performing an upgrade installation. This is not required for AB Suite 5.0, and it is recommended that you uncheck the option. 12

13 In addition, in this dialog box, you can choose your default environment settings. It is recommended that you use Visual C# Development Settings for improved stability and performance, although the other settings can be used if they are more compatible with your primary development needs. The default environment setting is set per user. Note: Visual Studio attempts to connect to the internet to complete configuration. If you have firewalls activated, this access may be detected and you will be prompted to allow Visual Studio to connect. Unless there are specific security requirements in your environment, it is recommended that you allow Visual Studio through initially. Visual Studio 2013 starts and displays the default layout as shown below. 13

14 At this stage, your machine is ready to install AB Suite 5.0 Developer. 6. Troubleshooting This section will contain additional information regarding issues and problems with Visual Studio 2013 installation in the future. 14
