1 OperatiOns Manual

2 Overview Yur muse mst likely has a wheel n it. If yu lk at yur muse frm the side, that wheel rtates clckwise and cunterclckwise, like a knb. If yu lk at the muse frm the tp, the wheel s surface slides frward and backward like a fader. Wuldn t it be nice if yu culd rll r slide that wheel in Reasn and have the cntrl underneath yur muse pinter rtate r slide in sync with the wheel? WheelWrk fr Reasn allws yu t d just that! WheelWrk is als cmpatible with tuchpads. Thrughut this dcument, references t rtating the muse wheel are equivalent t using tw fingers t scrll with a tuchpad. Any differences r exceptins will be nted. If yu are using a tuchpad, be sure t read the sectin entitled Using WheelWrk with Tuchpads. Mdes f Operatin Knb Mde Slider Mde Mst f the cntrls n Reasn devices are rtating knbs, which means they dn t change their hrizntal r vertical psitin when adjusted. In WheelWrk the starting mde * is called Knb Mde and allws yu t perate these rtatinal cntrls. Simply place the pinter ver the knb yu want t adjust and rtate the muse wheel up r dwn t turn the knb clckwise r cunterclckwise. If yu want t reduce the sensitivity f the rtatin, just hld dwn the [Shift] key as yu nrmally wuld when clicking and dragging in Reasn. Mst ther cntrls in Reasn are slider cntrls where the handle f the cntrl mves up and dwn when adjusted. In Slider Mde, scrlling the muse wheel will mve the cntrl underneath the cursr in the directin the wheel is mved while mving the muse cursr alng with it. In this mde, yu may als hld dwn the [Shift] key t reduce the sensitivity. Hwever, this will cause the cursr t drift away frm its starting psitin n the cntrl handle. Fr this reasn, using [Shift] is nly recmmended fr fine tuning adjustments nce yu have the slider clse t its final psitin. * The mde WheelWrk starts in can be changed using cmmand line ptins. 2

3 Hrizntal Sliders Buttn Lck Mde If yur muse has hrizntal scrlling capability r yu have hrizntal scrlling enabled n yur tuchpad, yu can use WheelWrk t perate the few hrizntal sliders that exist n Reasn devices. Since knbs are nly affected by vertical mvements f the muse wheel (and nly when in Knb Mde, f curse), it s nt necessary fr WheelWrk t be in Slider Mde t perate hrizntal sliders. The prgram just needs t be running and nt in Suspend Mde. When yu want t fcus yur adjustments n a single cntrl, such as when recrding autmatin r perfrming live, Buttn Lck Mde is a handy feature. When WheelWrk is perating in Buttn Lck Mde, scrlling the muse wheel upward (just a little bump is all that s needed) acts t lck the left muse buttn dwn. Then yu can mve the cursr up and dwn t adjust whatever slider r knb yu were pinting at, just as if yu were hlding dwn the left buttn. Of curse this means that [Shift] perates nrmally in this mde t reduce sensitivity, and mving the muse left and right will adjust hrizntal sliders. Once yu re dne with yur cntrl adjustments, bumping the muse wheel dwnward unlcks the buttn and yu can mve the pinter nward t its next target. Yu can als unlck the buttn with a regular left click. Nte that changing perating mdes while the buttn is lcked will als cause it t unlck. T enter Buttn Lck Mde, duble tap the cnfigured Trigger Key. If ntificatins are enabled, the change will be cnfirmed with a balln tip r ppup. Als, the system tray icn will change t the unlcked padlck versin when entering Buttn Lck Mde and back t either the standard (Knb Mde) icn r Slider Mde icn when exiting it. If yu have a muse with a middle buttn r a tuchpad that s capable f middle buttn clicks (it prbably is - see the Using WheelWrk with a Tuchpad sectin), yu can als enable an ptin called Middle Click Buttn Lcking, which lets yu use the middle buttn t lck and unlck the left muse buttn. With this ptin enabled, scrlling still wrks t mve knbs and sliders, giving yu access t bth methds f peratin withut the need t switch in and ut f Buttn Lck Mde. When this ptin is enabled, the standard Buttn Lck Mde and its Trigger Key shrtcut are disabled. 3

4 Suspend Mde Trigger Key Remember that yu can als unlck the lcked buttn with a left click. This is extremely useful when wrking with a tuchpad, as yu can lck the buttn with a middle click and then just use a nrmal click, which is a simpler mvement, t release it. Since the middle buttn has n ther functinality in Reasn, Middle Click Buttn Lcking even wrks when WheelWrk is in Suspend Mde. Changes in the buttn lck state are reflected in WheelWrk s system tray icn. If yur taskbar isn t hidden, yu ll see an unlcked padlck n tp f the primary icn when in Buttn Lck Mde with the muse buttn released, and a lcked padlck icn verlay when the left buttn is lcked dwn. With Middle Click Buttn Lcking enabled, the system tray icn will nly display a padlck verlay when the left buttn is lcked dwn. Otherwise, it will indicate whether the prgram is in Knb Mde r Slider Mde. Smetimes, yu may want the muse wheel r the Trigger Key t behave nrmally within the Reasn prgram. Fr example, yu might need t scrll arund in the sequencer r the rack, r perhaps yu re entering names fr yur blcks and discver that [Caps Lck] is n and yu want t tggle it ff. Suspend mde allws yu t temprarily use yur muse wheel and Trigger Key fr their standard functins as if WheelWrk were n lnger running (with the exceptin f Middle Click Buttn Lcking as nted earlier). Althugh WheelWrk s ptins and mdes are accessible frm the menu n the prgram s system tray icn, this isn t a very cnvenient way t switch between mdes when yu re fcused n yur wrkflw in Reasn. WheelWrk prvides a much quicker rute t changing mdes thrugh the use f a user selectable Trigger Key. Selecting the Trigger Key WheelWrk can be cnfigured t use either the [Caps Lck], [Scrll Lck], r [Num Lck] key t switch between varius mdes. The simplest way t d this is by right-clicking the prgram s system tray icn and pening the Switch Mdes with submenu, frm which yu can chse ne f the 3 ptins, as well as view which is currently selected. If yu find 4

5 after using the prgram fr a while that yu dn t like the default setting, which uses the [Caps Lck] key, yu can change the Trigger Key that s selected when WheelWrk starts by adding a parameter t the prgram s launch shrtcut. See the Cmmand Line Optins sectin f this dcument fr further details. Selecting Mdes Using the Trigger Key When using WheelWrk with Reasn, the mst cmmn mde change is t switch between Knb Mde and Slider Mde, since mst f the time yu ll be wrking with ne r the ther f these cntrls. Fr this reasn, switching between these 2 mdes has the simplest shrtcut: all yu need t d is tap the Trigger Key and WheelWrk will tggle between them. If ntificatins are enabled, this will result in a balln tip r mmentary ppup dialg as cnfirmatin f the change. The icn in the system tray will als change t indicate which mde yu re in, thugh this will f curse nly be visible if yu dn t have yur taskbar hidden. Buttn Lck Mde can als be quite useful. T switch in and ut f Buttn Lck Mde, simply duble-tap yur chsen Trigger Key. T enter and exit Suspend Mde, press and hld the Trigger Key fr at least half a secnd. Remember that when WheelWrk is in Suspend Mde, the Trigger Key will perfrm its nrmal Windws functin when pressed mmentarily in the Reasn applicatin. Prgram Feedback System Tray Icn WheelWrk s system tray icn changes t reflect its current mde and state as nted thrughut this manual. If yu nrmally keep yur taskbar visible, cnsider custmizing the system tray settings s the WheelWrk icn will always Shw icn and ntificatins. Otherwise, yu may want t enable ne f the ther prgram feedback methds, at least until yu re cmfrtable with using the applicatin. 5

6 Balln Tips Ppups The default setting * fr WheelWrk prgram feedback is t shw status infrmatin using balln tips. If yu nrmally keep yur Windws taskbar hidden, using the balln tips feedback ptin will cause the taskbar t slide up mmentarily each time yu change mdes. If yu find this distracting, yu can either use the Ppups ptin r disable feedback altgether. With this ptin selected, mde change ntificatins will be shwn using mmentary ppup windws in the center f the display. These windws will autmatically clse themselves in 1 t 1.5 secnds. N Text Ntificatins Deselecting the Enable Feedback ptin in WheelWrk s system tray menu (r changing the default setting via cmmand line ptin) will prevent any balln tips r mmentary ppups frm being displayed when changing mdes. In this case, the system tray icn changes will be yur nly indicatin f which mde yu re currently in, and nly if the icn is visible based n yur taskbar and system tray settings. Using WheelWrk with Tuchpads If yu have a laptp, yu may find that the scrlling capability f yur tuchpad des nt cause Reasn s knbs t turn and sliders t slide even thugh WheelWrk is running n yur machine. This is due t the fact that typical tuchpads these days use a driver-based methd fr scrlling that des nt emulate the wheel up and dwn cmmands that mst mice send. Hwever, this prblem can be slved using a third party freeware applicatin called TwFingerScrll, which can cnvert multi-finger tuchpad gestures int scrll wheel cmmands. TwFingerScrll Selecting the Crrect Scrlling Mde In rder fr TwFingerScrll t emulate muse wheel clicks, yu shuld select the Cmpatible setting under the Scrlling tab in TwFingerScrll s settings dialg. Yu can bring up the settings dialg by * Again, keep in mind that defaults can be changed using cmmand line ptins. Available fr dwnlad here (v1.06) and here (v1.09 md) 6

7 duble-clicking the TwFingerScrll icn in the Windws system tray. WheelWrk has been tested t wrk with v1.06 and the v1.09 MacHater Md and may wrk with ther versins. Middle and Right Buttn Optins TwFingerScrll als prvides several excellent features t make it easy t right-click and middle-click using the tuchpad surface rather than its built-in buttns, which is why The Instrument Panel highly recmmends using it n any laptp - even ne withut Reasn installed. Fr example, yu can cnfigure the prgram settings s that hlding ne finger n the tuchpad surface and then tapping anther functins as a right-click. Getting Alng with Yur Existing Tuchpad Driver If yu have a newer tuchpad and/r driver, the driver may already supprt multi-finger gestures fr its wn features, such as swiping left r right with 2 fingers t mve t the previus and next pages when using a web brwser. Yu may need t disable sme f these features in the tuchpad cnfiguratin in rder fr yur existing driver t get alng with TwFingerScrll. Yu will find these settings in the Cntrl Panel under the Hardware and Sund heading (r by searching fr Muse ). Driver-Based Scrll Regins One feature that s fairly cmmn in mdern tuchpads allws yu t specify that the rightmst and bttmmst prtins f the tuchpad surface shuld allw scrlling when yu drag yur finger in thse regins. Since this typically uses a different frm f emulatin than simulating muse wheel up and dwn cmmands, yu can usually use this feature alng with WheelWrk. When cnfigured this way the tw finger scrlling gestures can be used t perate knbs and sliders in Reasn, while the scrlling areas f the tuchpad surface serve t scrll arund the rack and/r sequencer. This trick can imprve yur efficiency, as it eliminates the need t put WheelWrk in Suspend Mde in rder t scrll arund within yur prject. Cmmand Line Optins Where t Specify Cmmand Line Optins If yu want t change the default settings that are in effect when yu start WheelWrk fr Reasn, yu ll need t create a shrtcut t the applicatin 7

8 rather than just running the executable file directly. Then yu can add any ptin parameters after the prgram path in the shrtcut as shwn belw: Trigger Key Selectin /Num /Caps /Scrll Starting Mde /Slider Start in Slider mde instead f knb mde. /Suspend Start in suspended mde s trigger key and muse wheel behave nrmally in Reasn until suspend is released. Nte: Bth f these mdes may be used tgether. Buttn Lck Operatin /Middle Use the middle buttn (r tuchpad equivalent) t lck and unlck the left buttn. Nte: If this ptin is enabled, subsequent /BtnLck parameters will be ignred. In runtime, it s nt pssible t engage Buttn Lck mde when the Middle Buttn ptin is enabled. /BtnLck 8

9 Feedback Sensitivity Start in Buttn Lck mde (must be specified after /Slider ptin r Slider mde will disengage Buttn Lck). Nte: This switch will be ignred if the /Middle ptin has already been specified r canceled if /Middle is specified later, as they are mutually exclusive. /Silent Prevent all balln tips and message bxes related t switching f prgram mdes. Keystrke actins still apply and are reflected in the WheelWrk system tray icn and menu. /Ppups Display mde change messages using mmentary ppups instead f the default balln tips. /Sens=# Change default sensitivity fr knb cntrls; affects bth nrmal peratin and when [Shift] is held dwn. Default setting is 5. # represents the desired value and can be mre than ne digit (thugh this might be excessive). Setting this value t small may cause sme knbs nt t respnd. Nte: the equals sign may be any character, such as a cln. /VSens=# Change default sensitivity fr vertical sliders. Wrks the same as the /Sens ptin therwise. Default value is 3. /HSens=# Same as VSens, but affects hrizntal sensitivity if yur muse/tuchpad supprts hrizntal scrlling. Trubleshting The Trigger Key isn t wrking t change mdes. Remember that WheelWrk nly functins when the main Reasn windw is active. Be sure it has fcus and then the Trigger Key shuld functin fr mde switching. Otherwise it will behave nrmally (if yur keybard has lights t 9

10 indicate the status f yur selected Trigger Key, yu shuld see the indicatr tggling n and ff when yu press the key). Balln Tips aren t being displayed when I press the Trigger Key t change mdes.
