4 1 AltaVault Overview 1.1 Executive Overview NetApp AltaVault storage enables customers to securely back up data to any cloud at up to 90% less cost compared to on-premises solutions. AltaVault gives customers the power to tap into cloud economics while preserving investments in existing backup infrastructure and meeting backup and recovery SLAs. AltaVault appliances simply act as a network-attached storage target within a backup infrastructure. This enables organizations to eliminate their reliance on tape infrastructure and all of its associated capital and operational costs while improving backup windows and disaster recovery capabilities. It is simple to set up the AltaVault appliance and start moving data to the cloud in as little as 30 minutes; setting up tape or other disk replication infrastructures can take days. Leveraging industry-leading deduplication, compression, and WAN optimization technologies, AltaVault appliances shrink dataset sizes by 10 to 30 times, substantially reducing cloud storage costs, accelerating data transfers, and storing more data within the local cache, speeding recovery. Security is provided by encrypting data on site, in flight, as well as in the cloud using 256-bit AES encryption and TLS v1. AltaVault appliances provide a dual layer of encryption that prevents any data moved into the cloud from being compromised, and it creates a complete end-to-end security solution for cloud storage. Because an AltaVault appliance is an asymmetric, stateless appliance, no hardware is needed in the cloud, and you can recover the last known good state of a broken or destroyed AltaVault appliance to a new AltaVault appliance. AltaVault appliances provide flexibility to scale cloud storage as business requirements change. Organizations avoid all capital expenditure planning required with tape and disk replication based solutions, saving up to 90%. 1.2 Backup & Replication Architecture Overview Veeam Backup & Replication is an industry-leading data protection and disaster recovery solution for VMware virtual infrastructure that combines backup, replication, and the fastest item-level recovery in a single product. Enabling these options from one interface, Veeam Backup & Replication serves to solve the most critical problems of VMware virtual infrastructure management by protecting mission-critical virtual machines (VMs) from both hardware and software failure. With Veeam Backup & Replication, VM environments can publish a compressed and deduplicated backup file as a regular VMDK file, run a VM directly from a backup without modifying the backup in any way, and automatically create an isolated environment. You can also run a VM directly from a backup file on regular backup storage, eliminating the need to recover the backup to production storage. Veeam Backup & Replication performs backup and recovery activities with an easy-to-use wizard and is managed using the Management Console on Windows. Backup jobs are sent to Windows shares, which include SMB based targets. See Figure 1 for an image of a typical Backup & Replication deployment, in which Backup & Replication manages VMs that are backed up directly to a repository target. 4 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

5 Figure 1) Backup & Replication network tiers view. 1.3 AltaVault Appliance Overview Figure 2) AltaVault appliance. AltaVault appliances are optimized and purpose built for data protection. AltaVault appliances easily integrate into your existing backup infrastructure and favorite cloud storage provider. Setup and installation are easy because backup applications allow you to add an AltaVault appliance as a common target within its existing infrastructure. The backup server connects to the AltaVault appliance using standard SMB or NFS protocols. When you back up to an AltaVault device, it performs inline, variable-segment-length deduplication, compression, and encryption of the backup data to minimize storage consumption and transmission times. AltaVault appliances also use their local disk cache for fast recovery of recent backups, providing LAN performance for the most likely restores. The AltaVault appliance then securely writes the deduplicated backup data to cloud storage and also accelerates restores from the cloud by moving only needed segments of deduplicated data over the WAN. An easy-to-use graphical management console enables you to manage one or more AltaVault appliances through a web browser interface. 5 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

6 2 Deploy and Configure AltaVault with Backup & Replication Backup & Replication with AltaVault appliances provides you with a flexible, easy-to-configure-and-use solution that can be deployed with major cloud storage providers. See the AltaVault Deployment Guide for the detailed steps required to deploy an AltaVault appliance. 2.1 AltaVault Solution Configuration Topography Figure 3) AltaVault ecosystem. 2.2 Hardware and Software Prerequisites To properly deploy AltaVault into a backup environment, be sure that the following prerequisite requirements have been completed prior to installation and deployment of AltaVault. 1. You need at least one server that acts as the Backup & Replication server. This can be installed on either Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware ESXi. Check Veeam s support site and related compatibility lists where applicable. 2. Obtain server systems and related software media supported by Backup & Replication and the AltaVault appliance. 3. A physical AltaVault appliance or a virtual AltaVault appliance needs to be online and connected to the physical network infrastructure. A minimum of two IP addresses must be available for AltaVault. 4. You must procure and set up all necessary software licenses from each vendor using vendor-specific guidelines. This includes obtaining cloud storage credentials from your designated cloud storage provider. 5. Perform physical stacking and racking of equipment at each site. All cabling and power must be operational. 6. Verify that all LAN and WAN connections are functioning to and from Internet and cloud storage providers. 7. If applicable, have available a Windows directory service (Active Directory) or a UNIX Kerberos server. 6 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

If applicable, specify the applications by using the Applications button. Enable Guest File System Indexing Enable this option to index guest files in a VM being backed up. This performs file indexing and enables you to perform fast and accurate search for VM guest OS files. This selection is optional. Guest OS Credentials To coordinate proper indexing and VSS activities, Veeam Backup & Replication deploys a small agent inside a VM. The agent is installed only during VSS quiescence and indexing procedures and removed immediately after the processing is finished (depending on the selected option, during the backup job or after it is finished), thus producing low impact on VM performance and stability. If either the VSS or Indexing options are enabled, then provide the system credentials for a target VM to deploy the agent. Note that the user name must be supplied in the DOMAIN\USERNAME format. 11. Use this panel of the wizard to schedule backups of the VMs on a regular basis. Click Create to complete the wizard. Figure 24) Job scheduling panel. Run the Job Automatically To specify the job schedule, select this option and identify which schedule to perform the backups of the VM. Automatic Retry In the Automatic retry section, select to repeat an attempt to run a backup job in case it fails for some reason. A repeatedly run job includes failed VMs only. Enter the number of attempts to run the job and define time spans between them. If you select continuous backup, Veeam Backup & Replication retries the job for the defined number of times without any time intervals between the job runs. 17 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

18 3.3 Performing a Test Backup To test Veeam Backup & Replication with the AltaVault appliance, you can run a manual backup of the job set up in the previous step. 1. 25 4 Solution Recommendations and Best Practices This chapter lists recommendations and best practices for deploying AltaVault within Backup & Replication environments. The best practices are not requirements, but NetApp recommends you follow these suggestions to achieve an ideal solution experience. 4.1 Backup & Replication Best Practices The following table displays the recommended best practices for using Backup & Replication with AltaVault. Table 1) Backup & Replication best practices. Item Use shared folder repository type Maximum concurrent tasks Enable CBT and applicationaware image-processing options in job settings Disable compression, encryption, deduplication, backup file alignment, and backup decompression in job settings Set load control for concurrent operations to AltaVault Limit use of vpower features to physical AltaVault appliances only Do not perform reverse incremental or synthetic full backups using AltaVault When performing disaster recovery, prepopulate Veeam.VBM,.VBK, and.vbi files Description AltaVault has been tested for use with Backup & Replication shared folders. Veeam recommends that you configure the number of tasks based on the amount of RAM and the number of core CPUs available on the Veeam VMware proxy server. See Veeam documentation for further details on proper settings for this field VMs are tracked to reduce data sent to AltaVault. Frees system resources and allows AltaVault to optimize data. Allows Backup & Replication to maximize job throughput to AltaVault using multiple connections. Physical AltaVault appliances provide a better performing environment for running limited vpower operations. AltaVault is not designed to handle the heavy read/write workload that is used by these backup operation types to reconstruct data. If a disaster occurs and you recover both Veeam and AltaVault, perform AltaVault prepopulation of all *.VBM files and any *.VBK and *.VBI files that correspond to backups needed for recovery prior to restarting Veeam. This is to make sure that the recovered Veeam server can properly access information needed for backups stored on AltaVault. 4.2 Windows Best Practices You can modify Windows networking parameters for SMB to improve overall backup application performance. To make these changes, go to Start Menu and enter regedit to start the Windows registry editor. Provide administrative permissions if prompted. Note that changes made within the Windows registry editor are permanent upon entry so use extreme caution when making the changes or additions. A reboot is required. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\param eters] "SESSTIMEOUT"=dword:00000e10 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters] "DefaultSendWindow"=dword: "DefaultReceiveWindow"=dword: NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

26 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters] "GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize"=dword: "TcpWindowSize"=dword: "Tcp1323Opts"=dword: If Windows 2012 or Windows 8 or higher is used with AltaVault versions lower than 4.2, the Secure Negotiate feature in those products requires SMB signing negotiation messages to be signed themselves; otherwise, the connection fails. AltaVault versions lower than 4.2 do not sign negotiation messages, and this can cause the SMB connections to AltaVault to fail repeatedly. To work around this limitation if you cannot upgrade AltaVault to version 4.2 or higher, disable the Secure Negotiate feature on the Windows server by using the following command from Windows PowerShell. Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article for further details. Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" RequireSecureNegotiate -Value 0 -Force 4.3 Solaris Best Practices NFS networking parameters on Solaris operating systems should be configured to optimally send data to AltaVault through configured NFS mounts. In addition to tuning the rsize and wsize mount options appropriately, nfs3_max_transfer_size and nfs3_bsize should also be tuned. nfs3_max_transfer_size and nfs3_bsize should be greater than or equal to minimum of rsize and wsize. To set the values, edit the /etc/system file and change/add the following lines to the file: nfs:nfs3_max_transfer_size=<value> nfs:nfs3_bsize=<value> A reboot of the system is required in order for the configuration changes to take effect. 5 Troubleshooting Issue: Veeam vpower functions of Veeam Backup & Replication might cause slow performance reading from AltaVault appliances. Possible solution: Because these operations cause random reads and writes to occur, NetApp recommends that you perform vpower tasks serially on physical AltaVault appliance hardware instead of virtual AltaVault and individual user-supplied disk. Issue: Low performance during full or incremental backups. Possible solutions: Make sure AltaVault logging is set to INFO rather than NOTICE. Double-check the job settings. Identify the number of backup jobs running. Due to inherent limitations of the SMB protocol, 30MBps to 50MBps data throughput is not uncommon for a single backup stream. 26 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

27 Check Veeam job logs to verify that Veeam is using the virtual appliance transport mode for the VMware proxy server rather than falling back to network mode, which is slower. Note: The virtual appliance transport mode is only recommended if the Veeam backup proxy is being run within a VM. Figure 38) Virtual appliance transport mode. Sanity test ESX infrastructure for bottlenecks by temporarily changing the problematic backup job's repository to local disk storage or creating a separate job in Veeam with the same VMs configured to write local disk storage. If the observed throughput is not substantially higher, the bottleneck is elsewhere. In case of slow incremental backups, verify that the last full backup is no more than a week old and that there are no more than six increments taken since then. If a job is only run manually, Veeam does not run a full backup unless either it is required or the user specifically requests it. Because Veeam scans the last full backup and all subsequent increments during backups, having too many increments slows the process. If slow performance persists, upgrade to the latest AltaVault software and rerun a full backup before running any incrementals. Issue: Poor vpower performance and timeouts during VM power-on in SureBackup jobs. Possible solutions: Make sure that AltaVault logging is set to INFO rather than NOTICE. Due to AltaVault architecture and optimizations, vpower features do not run as quickly as they would run on the primary storage. This is a common issue with inline deduplication storage. Make sure that no other jobs are reading/writing to AltaVault when SureBackup or other vpower features are in use. Stagger the vpower-based jobs so that no more than one is running at a time. In case of VM timeouts during SureBackup, increase the timeout to at least 1 hour. If timeouts still persist, start the job manually and monitor the console of the affected VM. If the tested VM gets a usable login prompt well before the timeout, log in to the VM and verify that the network and VMware tools started successfully. There is a known issue with Veeam sometimes failing to detect a successful guest OS startup. Also, check AltaVault's front-end throughput out graphs during the time 27 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances

28 when Veeam is waiting for the VM to come up. Unless there is steady read activity throughout the timeout period, the issue most likely is with the VM itself. Issue: Veeam snapshot backup fails to AltaVault and generates Windows guest VM event ID 50, 57, 137, 140, or Possible solutions: = Version History Version Date Document Version History Version 1.0 May 2015 Initial version Version 1.1 November 2015 Updated for 4.1 release Version 1.2 April 2016 Updated for 4.2 release Version 1.3 August 2016 Updated for release 28 NetApp AltaVault (formerly SteelStore) Cloud-Integrated Storage Appliances
