Colorado State University ECE251 Installation of Keil Microcontroller Development Kit (MDK) ** Windows only ** The MDK contains μvision 5 IDE (Integrated Development Environment) with debugger, flash programmer and the ARM compiler toolchain. The software is free, but it will not compile, assemble, or link programs that are more than 32 Kbytes of code. ** Do not install the MDK with your development board connected to your PC as it may not install all drivers needed ** Step 1: Download Keil MDK-ARM Go to the Keil MDK-ARM product page: Click MDK-ARM v5 Fill out the form:
Click the MDK5xx.EXE link (xx represents the current software version. At the time of writing 5.14 is the current version, but it may be different for you.) Step 2: Install Keil MDK Run the downloaded setup file
Click Next on the first screen Agree to the terms of the license Choose location to install the software Fill out info If installing on your personal computer, use your personal information Installation will begin after clicking Next If you get this security prompt, click Install
Installation should be complete
Step 3: Pack Installer The Pack Installer is a tool used help you install the correct support files for the processor / device you are using. Keil μvision can be used to create programs for MANY devices other than the TI TM4C. The Pack Installer is where you choose the packs needed to support your device. Internet connection is required! How the Pack Installer works: You will be presented with a large list of packs that support various features on various devices. (If this is the first install, the list may take a moment to fully populate) Next to each pack you will be presented with a button that may display different options depending on the status of that particular pack. The following are typical options: Up to date The pack is installed and up to date. Clicking the Up to date button will have no action Install The pack is not installed. Clicking the Install button will install the pack Update The pack is installed, but there is an update available. Clicking the Update button will install the updates required for that pack. The following instructions show you which packs you will need for the TM4C123. If you do not get the correct packs installed the first time, or if you want to add support for another device, the packs can easily be changed later.
Click OK on the first popup screen Install the following packs by clicking the Install button next to the desired pack. You can see the install progress at the bottom of the Pack Installer window.
NOTE: Another option that is good to use when adding support for a new device is to use the Devices section of the Pack Installer located on the right hand side. By clicking on the processor you want to add, the packs on the left are filtered to the ones that support that device. Step 4: Download / Install In-Circuit Debug Interface (ICDI) Drivers The Tiva 4C development board contains an on-board debugger used when debugging your programs in Keil MDK. However, your PC needs a driver to create a communication link between Keil and the development board. Go to TI s Stellaris ICDI drivers page: Download the latest drivers Extract the downloaded files, and remember their location Plug the TM4C development board into a USB port.
Open Control Panel in Windows and open Device Manager Expand the Other Devices section to see three In-Circuit Debug Interface devices. Note that there may be other unknown devices on your PC. Only the In- Circuit Debug Interface devices are related to this install. Right-click on each ICDI device listed and select Update Driver Software... On the following screen select Browse my computer for driver software. Enter the path to where the drivers were extracted to and click Next
You may get a security warning due to windows unable to verify the publisher of the drivers. Choose to Install this driver software anyway
Once the driver is installed, the individual ICDI device will be removed from the Other Devices section. Repeat the driver install for each remaining ICDI device.
Step 5: Download Terminal Emulator Several labs will feature programs that interact with the user through serial communication. The terminal emulator will be a screen in which output from the development board can be displayed, as well as receive input from a user to send to the board. While there are many terminal emulator programs out there, we will use Termite 3.1 from Compuphase due to its simplicity. Go to the Compuphase Termite page: Choose Termite version 3.1 (program only) This will download the terminal emulator only, which is a small program with no install. Choose a location to save the ZIP file. Extract files
Inside the zip file is the Termite 3.1 (terminal emulator) application. Double clicking on the application will run the terminal emulator. Setting up the emulator to communicate with the development board will be covered in later labs Installation is complete! You are now ready to program and debug the TI TM4C123GXL
